ACTION ALERT: HOWL AGAINST Simpson’s Sneak Ax Attack on Wolves & the ESA

SAVE ME! Salmon River wolf

Dear Friends,

Wolves need our help once again. The U.S. House “Continuing Resolution” budget bill goes to the U.S. Senate on Monday, Feb 28th.

Please pick up the phone and call the Senators (list below) TODAY, THIS WEEKEND, MONDAY, TUESDAY, or whenever you can … . Please speak up for wolves.

Buried deep in the bill is Section 1713, that forever would strip wolves of any federal protection in Idaho, Montana and parts of Oregon, Utah and Washington. This sneaky maneuver put forth by Idaho Rep. Mike Simpson doesn’t even mention the word “wolf” or Endangered Species Act. Guess he thought no one would notice.

While there are dozens of terrible provisions in the House “Continuing Resolution” budget, this ALERT focuses on Section 1713 – Simpson’s ax attack on wolves and the Endangered Species Act. I urge you to call members of the Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works where the House budget will be debated starting March 1, Tuesday. Ask the Senators to remove Section 1713.

This committee is chaired by Barbara Boxer (D-CA). She is waffling on her support of wolves, apparently because she doesn’t want to upset Democratic Senators from Montana. Idaho’s Senator Mike Crapo is a minority member of this committee – he’s not a friend of wolves, either, but he still needs to hear from us.

Thank you,

Lynne

FOCUS ON CALLING MAJORITY SENATORS – AS MANY AS YOU CAN. YOU’LL HAVE ABOUT A MINUTE. IF YOU LIVE IN ANOTHER STATE, PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS, ESP IF ONE IS ON THIS COMMITTEE. If you would rather send an e-mail, go to the Senator’s website and write your comments.

Suggestions on what to say:

– Calling regards to the House budget bill.

– Urge that the Senate remove Section 1713 – Rep Mike Simpson’s attack on wolves and the ESA. As an Idaho resident he does not speak for me.

– Section 1713 would strip wolves in Idaho & Montana of all their protection and hundreds of wolves will be killed.

– I like wolves and want them protected.

– The budget bill is no place to legislate the fate of wolves or any Endangered Species.
Capital Switchboard Numbers give the name of the Senator & you will be transfered to their office. You will then either speak to a staff member, or on the weekend – to voice mail.

House Republicans Move against Wolves

Friday, February 25, 2011

Buried inside a U.S. House budget bill to keep the federal government operating past March is a controversial provision that would remove the endangered species classification for wolves in the Rocky Mountains.

Pushed by Republicans, the plan would allow the wolf population to be reduced to only 300 in the Northern Rockies, an area covering Idaho, Montana and parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah. Currently, about 1,700 wolves roam the region, meaning the legislation would allow for the slaughter of 82% of the animals.

Andrew Wetzler at the Natural Resources Defense Council insists 300 wolves is not a sufficient number for the long-term survival of the species, which nearly went extinct in the 20th century.
Twice before, lawmakers tried to end the wolves’ endangered species designation, only to have a federal judge intervene. The new attempt includes language designed to prevent the courts from getting in the way, by stating the rule “shall not be subject to judicial review.”

Wolves would still be protected in Wyoming, the southwestern desert and the upper Great Lakes.
Representative Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), chair of the appropriations subcommittee overseeing the Interior Department, speaking on behalf of ranchers, justified the renewed killing of wolves. “Not only do wolf populations far exceed recovery goals, but without proper management those populations have grown to the point where they are adversely impacting other wildlife populations in the region and wreaking havoc for ranchers, hunters, and public land users in Idaho,” he said in a statement.

  1. Is there any benefit to talking directly to a staff member, vs. leaving a message on the voice mail? Because I know it would be easier for me to call on the weekend.

  2. Captain – leaving a message on voice mail over the weekend or during night time hours is fine. Come Monday, the switchboards are probably going to be jammed as Congress goes back in Session.

  3. This is a crying shame that some Senators do not want to stand up for what they believe in because of other Senators. Take your stand and stand up for the wolves.
Please do not let these Cattlemen’ Association, Senators and Governors win. They are not for the wolves. Stand up and be counted. I am ………

  4. One of the many things I love about this blog is how quickly you update it. One moment I’m reading a post and taking action, the next there is a brand new entry with breaking news, articles and contact information. I don’t think there is any other conservation blog were you get information in such a complete and quick way.
I have been sending e-mails to many senators half the afternoon; I think that I’ll be sending several more now. But if it concerns the protection of our native wildlife and changes the ignorant minds of many people, I won’t mind one bit.

    • We need to turn these principles into action. We are under assault from people that are mindless followers like Americans for prosperity. They care about two things- money and power. I wonder if the idiot sons have promised private jet seats to these mindless buffoons that want our wildife, clean air, and water

  6. It seems out of character for Barbara Boxer to be waffling on any ESA issue. I have called her office on a number of times- whAT makes you think she is waffling? I’m just curious? I have always thought she knows the implications of allowing a political solution to this issue. Wolves next week- hawks the next……

    • William…part of the problem is Denny Rehburg. He’s running against Tester in 2012. I think the Dems are nervous about Tester losing the race and shifting power in the Senate.

      • Nabeki- 2012 is a long way away, and anything can happen. There are states like Mass that could easily pick up Republican seats. I have to have faith in Boxer and the other dems that know that allowing a political solution to the wolf issue would be very bad for the environment- think about it. Protecting the environment is a core democratic belief like freedom of choice or for the ability of workers to collective bargain. With the Repubs over the rails and way off the cliff the dems have to be the adults in the room- and believe me I am not happy with the whole state of our country’s politics right now! Do you really think level headed Independents will elect more Repubs in 2012? If they do then we are lost as a country.

      • I don’t know william…we’ll see how they respond but politicians are politicians and there’s a real possibility Tester could lose to Rehburg . Then the majority in the Senate could shift. No telling how these politicians are going to react to his. Will they let wolves go down in flames to save Tester’s Senate seat? I guess we’ll just have to see. Keep writing, emailing, calling faxing and never give up.

      • Frankly, I am neither a repulican nor a demacrat.I generally will vote for the one that is closest to what I believe or would like to see that would get things done,if not,I do not vote.I do not want to have to chose one of two evils. It,for me at least,is like asking me how do I want to be executed. What generaly happens indenpendents don’t vote. One has to try to get them to make a move.I do not like the Rep. and the directon they are taking us and the Dems are disappointing, even when they had control of the House and the Senate. That promise of change, from the President, never happened and it’s the same old thing when it comes to each political party’s agendas.

Final Draft of Idaho Wolf Legislation

Idaho wants to put a 500 dollar bounty on each wolf. This is why states can’t manage animals like wolves. This is like the 1930’s all over again. Times have not changed. More and more people like wolves and that is a good thing, but you still have all of the trigger happy rednecks who want to eradicate species they compete with and just don’t like.
