A Prayer For Idaho’s Wolves…

Prayer of the Wolf

Great Spirit watch over me
Through the darkness of the night
As I go to quell my hunger
Guide me with the moon’s light

I know that I am hated
By Man deep within his mind
But this world is one of the predator
That is how it was designed

I ask only to be left in peace
So that I may live from day to day
And for room to raise my family

So they may run and feed and play

And when I answer that final lonesome howl
As my ancestors who have gone on before
I hope that I will meet them

At heavens very door

I pray that will be the place
Where man can live at our side
Where the valleys are deep, mountains are high
and the spaces are forever wide

That then he may finally see
That I am his brother and not his foe
for only through losing hatred
May our spirits ever grow

  1. Beautiful.

  2. Of course, Not all “man” hate wolves, as this site and many others are a testament to. I hope to see the day when wolves and other silvan beings are left in peace.

  3. Touching words……he must have been a wonderful person and activist.

  4. I wrote a poem a couple of days ago – not nearly as eloquent as this one:

    ODE TO WOLVES

Wolf brothers trotting thru tall timber in the light of your fellow moon,

Together on your mission, like brave warriors of the night,

You will provide, you will protect,

You are the only thing that is purely right,

Feel the North West wind upon your noble face, as prints in the snow mark where you go..

But where will you go, wolf brothers, when they come with murder on their mind…

You sense the danger, you sound the alarm, Run! Run! run on high…for I shall never be ready for your ‘good-bye’…

Wolf brothers trotting through tall timber in the light of your fellow moon..

Spirit warriors now you trot, you howl…gone too soon.

    • Very touching and beautiful Linda.

      • Donna?? :)

      • ROFL…I changed it Linda.

    • Linda,a beautiful poem and a lovely expression, too.

  5. You’ve said it the best.

  6. YO NO CREO EN DIOS . CREO EN LA NATURALEZA Y ESPERO QUE ALGUIEN PROTEJA A ESTOS MARAVILLOSOS ANIMALES , IMPRESCINDIBLES Y NECESARIOS . LOS LOBOS ESTABAN EN ESTE PLANETA ANTES QUE NOSOTROS , COMO EL RESTO DE LOS ANIMALES . EL SER HUMANO FUE EL ULTIMO EN LLEGAR Y LO ESTA DESTRUYENDO TODO . MAL NACIDOS .

I DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOD. I BELIEVE IN NATURE AND HOPE THAT SOMEONE protect these wonderful animals, essential and necessary. The wolves were on this planet before WE LIKE THE REST OF THE ANIMALS. THE MAN WAS THE LAST TO ARRIVE AND IT IS DESTROYING EVERYTHING.

  7. It’s a beautiful thiought but doesn’t mean much for the wolves used for target practice. Hunters don’tcare about the prayers. Wake up, we have to help the wolves!

    • Donna I’ve been doing this a long time and once in awhile you have to stop and connect with your spiritual self. Doesn’t mean I’m going to stop advocating for wolves, it just means take a breath.

      N.

  8. ulve er så smukke og hundeagtige, at vi skal lære at forstå dem bedre, end at løfte geværet, og lad de dyr vi har, skal vi værne om,

wolves are so beautiful and dog-like, that we must learn to understand them better than to raise the gun and let the animals we have, we must uphold,

  9. Beautiful!

  10. Wolf brother longs for recognition as just that–totemic kin. Poems like this resurrect old forms of totemic kinship that comprised a fundamental part of hunting and gathering cultures.

The spread of totemic culture–or put another way, the formation of human-animal families– is our best hope for stopping the impending slaughter of wolves in the Rockies.

Wolves are not the only animal with whom symbolic kinship has been established. See my book, “A Reenchanted World,” published in 2009 by Metropolitan/Henry Holt..

    • Thank you,James.I will check it out.

  11. Very nice prayer & poem.

  12. Such a beautiful prayer Dear Nabeki. Thanks for sharing with all of us…

    • You’re welcome Vasileios…..I thought it was beautiful too.

      N.
