Yellowstone’s Iconic 06 Female Falls To a Hunter’s Bullet…

Yellowstone wolf Lamar Canyon Pack Alpha Female_832F and Wolf 754 killed in the hunts

Yellowstone’s Lamar Canyon alpha female, also known as the 06 female or 832F, was shot to death last Thursday,  December 6. Her pack mate, wolf  754 on the right, was killed on November 10th….Photo Doug McLaughlin, NYT

The iconic alpha female of the Lamar Canyon Pack,  is dead. 832F, was shot to death 15 miles outside of Yellowstone, joining the other collared and un-collared park wolves who’ve had their lives snuffed out in the hunts. Her death saddened people around the world. She was widely known as the 06 Female.

“She is was the most famous wolf in the world,” said Jimmy Jones, a wildlife photographer who lives in Los Angeles and whose portrait of 832F appears in the current issue of the magazine American Scientist….New York Times

06 was the granddaughter of the legendary Druid Peak Pack alpha pair,  21M and 42F.

Will her passing awake a sleeping America to the horrors of the wolf hunts that are not only killing iconic Yellowstone wolves but another 600 wolves in just over three months since the hunts began?

Let her death be a rallying cry for all the lost wolves!

Flood the US Capital with phone calls, contact your Senators and Representatives. Keep the faxes and emails coming. We can make a difference. Wolves must be re-listed or their howls will be silenced forever in the lower forty-eight and Yellowstone wolves will be doomed to live on an island, reducing their chances of genetic connectivity with other wolves living outside the park, who are being subjected to brutal hunting and trapping.

No wolf is safe in America.

STOP THE HUNTS!!

‘Famous’ Wolf Is Killed Outside Yellowstone

By NATE SCHWEBER

Published: December 8, 2012

The wolf, known as 832F to researchers, was the alpha female of the park’s highly visible Lamar Canyon pack and had become so well-known that some wildlife watchers referred to her as a “rock star.” The animal had been a tourist favorite for most of the past six years.

The wolf was fitted with a $4,000 collar with GPS tracking technology, which is being returned, said Daniel Stahler, a project director for Yellowstone’s wolf program. Based on data from the wolf’s collar, researchers knew that her pack rarely ventured outside the park, and then only for brief periods, Dr. Stahler said.

Montana FWP  finally relented and extended a buffer zone around Yellowstone National Park  for the remainder of the hunt and trapping season. I’m sure their phone lines were burning down from an outraged public, after the killing of the 06 Female and 6 other collared Yellowstone wolves.  She was the most famous, well-known wolf in Yellowstone, known around the world. Her loss will be acutely felt,  not only by her human admirers but her pack, who are now left without their powerful leader.  BUT it doesn’t change the fact that wolves in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and the Great Lakes are still under siege. There is no buffer zone for them. Idaho is trapping and snaring wolves, Montana’s wolf trapping season starts in 5 days, Wisconsin’s wolf hunt continues and the state is still pushing to hunt wolves with dogs…..only a court injunction stopped it but a hearing is scheduled on December 20th to revisit the issue, Minnesota is trapping and killing wolves and Michigan is moving ahead with legislation to hold a wolf hunt.

Please get active and oppose the wolf hunts!!! Nothing will change if we sit silently by! Hold the politicians and feds, who are responsible for this travesty, accountable!

Speak out for the wolves, we are their voice!

Michigan Wolves In Crossfire…

Gray_Wolf All Animals

It’s  groundhog day in wolf country, a grisly scenario playing out over and over in each wolf state.  The Michigan state Senate passed SB 135o on Thursday, which designates wolves as game animals, moving them one step closer to public hunts. The bill will now be shuttled to the state House for a vote.  So much for Michigan being reasonable on wolves.  The same trophy hunting crowd, who rammed through wolf hunts in Minnesota and Wisconsin, are alive and well in Michigan.

“Michigan moved a step closer to letting hunters target gray wolves Thursday, when the state Senate voted to designate the predator as a game species.

The bill was approved on a 23-15 vote and sent to the House, where a similar measure is pending. It doesn’t guarantee that wolf hunts will be allowed but authorizes the Michigan Natural Resources Commission, whose seven members are appointed by the governor, to establish seasons.

Wolves were shot, trapped and poisoned to near extinction in the lower 48 states in the last century but have rebounded in the Upper Midwest and Northern Rockies since receiving protection under federal and state law. “….Ann Arbor.com

But history be damned, wolf hating mania is in full force. When Ken Salazar and the USFWS turned Great Lakes wolves over to the states, they signed the animals death warrants. The wolf states are not interested in wildlife watchers, wolf advocates or Native Americans who oppose the hunts.  We’ve watched the dominoes fall for the last three and half years. First Montana and Idaho, then Wisconsin, Minnesota and Wyoming, now Michigan is clamoring for wolf blood.

Montana  and Idaho wolves were the first to be railroaded, sacrificed for Senator Tester’s (D-MT)  reelection. This is the third wolf hunt held in the two states. Not only are the hunts in Montana and Idaho becoming more brutal with each passing year but Montana is moving ahead with wolf trapping for the first time, starting on December 15.

There is no reason to hold public wolf hunts. Hundreds of wolves are killed every year by Wildlife Services for agribusiness.  The truth is wolves are being killed because the federal government turned them over to their mortal enemies, the  state fish and game agencies. Wolves are being killed because the states were given permission to slaughter them.

We have to get serious about pushing for federal legislation to relist wolves. We can’t just sit here and watch the  slaughter take place and spend our days counting wolf corpses.

Wolf hunts wipe out 555 wolves in just 3 months!!

Idaho Wolf Trapping Torture Is Here AGAIN…

Idaho opened their second wolf trapping season yesterday. Wolves in Idaho now face more pain, suffering and brutality.

Warning graphic Video

A helpless, struggling wolf is shot while caught in a leg-hold trap. Can it get more cowardly than this? Some trappers stomp and strangle wolves to death to preserve the “pelt”.  This video was uploaded December 23, 2011, on YouTube by someone called wolfkillr. This is the ugly face of trapping. I know it’s hard to watch but America needs to see the brutality and the evil that is trapping. Can you imagine the fear this wolf experienced?

Will you allow this to continue?

Will you organize in your hometown?

Will you hold a protest?

Will you work to end public land grazing?

Will you write letters to the editor?

Will you write to the Infamous 81 US Senators  who voted to delist wolves in the Northern Rockies via budget rider?

Will you tell those Senators you WILL NOT VOTE FOR THEM on November 6 because of their betrayal?

Will you boycott all wolf states that hold trophy hunts or kill wolves for agribusiness?

Will you boycott Yellowstone National Park to send Wyoming a message?

Will you spread this message to everyone you know?

Wyoming Wolf Holocaust Has Begun!!

October 1st, 2012, a half hour before sunrise, will begin a day of infamy for Wyoming wolves. Not only will they be hunted outside of Yellowstone National Park in a trophy hunt zone (over 2200 wolf hunt tags have been sold),  they’ll be treated as vermin in most of the state. The shoot-on-site plan goes into effect tomorrow!! No license needed, wolves can be run over with ATV’s , hung from a tree,  trapped, snared, POISONED or anything a wolf killer can come up with. AND they don’t have to report killing a wolf to the state for ten days. Yeah that’ll happen.

US government sanctions slaughter of wolves in Wyoming

Wyoming wolves lose federal protection, will be shot on sight across most of state

September 2012. US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has announced that gray wolves in Wyoming will be taken off the endangered species list – a death sentence for a majority of the animals, which will now be managed under a state plan that delineates more than 80 percent of Wyoming as a “predator zone” where wolves can be shot on sight. In the remainder of the state, excluding Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, wolves will be designated a “trophy game animal” and hunted in large numbers, with the goal of reducing the population from about 270 wolves to 100.

In response to this decision, the Center for Biological Diversity joined a coalition of environmental groups in filing a notice of intent to sue the federal government for stripping away Endangered Species Act protections from Wyoming’s wolves.

Slaughter
“Taking federal protection away from Wyoming’s wolves will bring the same kind of senseless slaughter that first drove them to the brink of extinction in the lower 48,” said Noah Greenwald, endangered species director at the Center for Biological Diversity, which has worked to protect western wolves for nearly a quarter-century. “Blatantly ignoring science and sanctioning the extermination of these beautiful and intelligent animals is a travesty. We’re going to sue to protect these wolves.”

===

On September 10th 2012,  a coalition of environmental groups notified USFWS  of their intent to sue over Wyoming’s wolf delisting plan but the groups cannot take legal action until SIXTY DAYS after the filing!!  So the wolf hunt and the shoot-on-sight plan will move forward until the environmental groups can plead their case for an injunction in court to stop the killing. A lot of wolves can be killed in the meantime.

This is all on the Obama administration, Secretary of the Interior rancher Ken Salazar and director of USFWS Dan Ashe, who thinks this slaughter is, “scientifically sound”.  Tell me how a wolf hunt AND a shoot-0n-sight  predator zone, that will decimate 270 hapless Wyoming wolves, who live outside Yellowstone,  is scientifically sound? Science has NOTHING to do with it. The power and influence of the ranching and hunting cabals pushed this agenda pure and simple!

===

That’s the sad state of wolf “recovery/slaughter”. The only wild wolf in America potentially safe is OR-7 because he decided to disperse from his natal pack, the Imnaha’s and run like hell away from the killing zone. Let’s hope he stays out of harms way. Yet his brother and sister wolves face an unprecedented slaughter.

Get active, hold a protest, organize!! The killing has to stop and the ONLY way it’s going to stop is by pressuring the politicians who rubber stamped this pogrom. Appealing to the states is hopeless, they aren’t going to stop killing wolves unless they’re ordered to.

Be relentless, don’t stop until we get some action.  Start a write-in campaign  directed at every US Senator who voted to delist wolves in the Northern Rockies, specifically the Democrats. Tell them to restore wolves  Endangered Species Protections or they won’t be getting your vote on November 6.

I know time is short, the election is just six weeks away but we CAN make an impact! Wolves are dying. The Wedge pack was just aerial gunned in Washington state for NOTHING! Montana and Idaho wolves are being hunted as I type this, 26 dead since August 30, 2012.  The Great Lakes states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and now Michigan are poised to travel down the same road. Oregon ODFW has a death warrant out on OR-7’s father and sibling, the only reason they’re not dead is a court ordered temporary restraining order stopped it.

Center For Biological Diversity Goes To Court Over Minnesota Wolf Hunt…

For Immediate Release, September 18, 2012

Lawsuit Filed Challenging Hunting and Trapping of Minnesota Wolves

State Reneges on Promise of No Hunting for Five Years

MINNEAPOLIS— The Center for Biological Diversity and Howling for Wolves filed a lawsuit today against the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources challenging the agency’s failure to provide a formal opportunity for public comment on recently approved rules establishing wolf hunting and trapping. The conservation groups are seeking a preliminary injunction to prevent the opening of hunting and trapping seasons this fall.

“The state rushed to issue wolf hunting and trapping rules without giving people a real chance to voice their opinions,” said Collette Adkins Giese, a Minneapolis-based attorney with the Center. “Especially considering the tremendous controversy around hunting and trapping of Minnesota’s wolves, state officials should have followed the law carefully to make sure they fully understood how the public felt about their decision.”

Minnesota’s 2001 wolf-management plan provided that wolves would not be hunted or trapped for five years after any removal of their Endangered Species Act protection, but the state legislature eliminated those safeguards last year by passing a budget bill that included a rider authorizing the Department of Natural Resources to open wolf hunting if the agency first provided an opportunity for public comment. In January 2012, the wolves’ federal protection was stripped away; but instead of opening a formal comment period, the department offered only an online survey. (More than 75 percent of respondents opposed the wolf hunt: Of 7,351 responses, only 1,542 people supported a wolf season.)

“Wolves already die at high rates from many causes, including human intolerance and persecution,” said Maureen Hackett, founder and president of Howling for Wolves. “Minnesotans benefit economically, culturally and ecologically by having wolves in the wild. As a state, we have so much to gain by keeping wolves undisturbed.”

Wolf hunting is scheduled to begin Nov. 3 with the opening of the deer firearms season; the state’s rules provide that 6,000 licenses will be sold to kill 400 wolves. The lawsuit filed today asks the Minnesota Court of Appeals to prevent implementation of wolf hunting and trapping rules until the court can issue its decision in the case.

Background
Livestock producers have pushed for hunting and trapping to reduce the state’s population of approximately 3,000 wolves. But hunting and trapping may actually increase conflicts between wolves and domestic animals by disrupting pack dynamics and creating more lone wolves that are more likely to target livestock out of desperation.

There are tested, nonlethal options to safeguard livestock from wolves, including guard dogs, flagging and fencing. Hunting and trapping is premature until state managers can gauge the impacts of a state management plan that allows the killing of wolves to protect domestic animals.

The Center for Biological Diversity is a national, nonprofit conservation organization with more than 375,000 members and online activists dedicated to the protection of endangered species and wild places.

Howling for Wolves was created to be a voice for wild wolves. It aims to educate the public about Minnesota’s wolf population and let people know how they can take action to keep wild wolves in a self-sustaining existence. For more information: www.howlingforwolves.org.

URGENT ACTION ALERT: There’s A Hit Out On Washington’s Wedge Pack….

UPDATE: August 22, 2012

Great response everyone, keep calling and emailing.  Let’s try and save this pack! This is an outrage!

===

So much for Washington State being progressive on wolves. As soon as a wolf looks sideways at a cow the ranchers start squawking and fish and game comes running. No matter ranchers lose thousands and thousands of cows each year to non-predation.

In 2010 for example, 37, 300 cows keeled over or were stolen in Washington.  But of course ranchers don’t get reimbursed for any of the following conditions that regularly claim the lives of cattle and calves every year.

Digestive problems …………………………………………………..
Respiratory problems ………………………………………………..
Metabolic problems …………………………………………………..
Mastitis …………………………………………………………………..
Lameness/injury ……………………………………………………….
Other diseases ………………………………………………………..
Weather related ……………………………………………………….
Calving problems ……………………………………………………..
Poisoning ………………………………………………………………..
Theft ………………………………………………………………………

“The “Wedge” pack was named for the wedge-shaped part of Stevens County between the Kettle River to the west and the Columbia River to the east.  The pack is Washington’s eighth.”  (Spokesman-Review)

The state has already killed a Wedge Pack  sub-adult female, now WDFW is  ready to take out all the adult wolves as soon as tomorrow over a few questionable depredations involving one rancher.  Where’s the proof? Oh that’s right we have to believe whatever the rancher and fish and game says.  There are pups involved who will be orphaned or worse, since both of their parents will be DEAD!

It won’t be hard to track and kill these wolves, the alpha male and one other wolf  in the pack is already radio collared. It will be like picking off fish in barrel. There pups will have to watch as their family is chased and killed.

Please speak out for them, they are voiceless and at the mercy of state management that was supposed to be so different. It’s looking like Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is bending to the same pressure from the livestock industry that has a strangle hold on all the wolf states.

Please call Governor Christine Gregoire today and tell her to put a stop to the massacre of the Wedge Pack!!

Phone:  360-902-4111

You can also contact the Phil Anderson, Director of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildife

Phone:  360-902-2200

director@dfw.wa.gov

This is very urgent, please make those calls!! If you live out of state let them know you won’t be visiting Washington any time soon if they kill this wolf pack and orphan their pups.  Tell them you’ll be spending your tourist dollars elsewhere.

How much more wolf killing does there have to be until the American people rise up and say enough?????

Kalispell Hearing Today on Wolf Trapping Proposal and Other Bad Stuff….

A charade is playing out today in Kalispell, Montana, where the last of the hearings on the 2012/2013 wolf killing proposals will be held by Montana FWP. They want to trap wolves, abolish quotas in the state and well, kill lots of wolves.

From the Ravalli Repubic

Trapping wolves, allowing the taking of up to three wolves, using electronic calls, lengthening the hunt and eliminating quotas are among the proposals to be introduced at Thursday’s Wednesday’s Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission meeting.

Read the gory details here.

These are the “objectives” for decimating the wolf population, taken from the Montana FWP website. My comments are in blue.

MEASURABLE OBJECTIVES:

1. Maintain a viable and connected wolf population in Montana.
Translation: Kill more wolves.

2. Gain and maintain authority for State of Montana to manage wolves.
Translation: We can’t allow those wolves to live wild and free, now can we?

3. Maintain positive and effective working relationships with livestock producers, hunters, and
other stakeholders.
Translation: Cater to the hunters and ranchers, the non-consumptive user be damned.

4a. Reduce wolf impacts on livestock.

Fact: In 2011, 74,800 Montana  cows were lost to non-predation,  including  Digestive problems, Respiratory problems, Metabolic problems, Mastitis, Lameness/injury, Other diseases, Weather, Calving problems, Poisoning, Theft, Other non-predator, Unknown non-predator while just 74 to wolves, out of a population of over 2 million cows.

4b. Reduce wolf impacts on big game populations.
Fact: Elk populations  have remained stable in the state at 150,000 elk since 2009. That is a 66% increase since 1984, according to the RMEF 25th anniversary press release in 2009.

4c. Maintain sustainable hunter opportunity for wolves.

Translation: Now we are getting to the real truth.

4d. Maintain sustainable hunter opportunity for ungulates.
Translation: See 4c

5. Increase broad public acceptance of sustainable harvest and hunter opportunity as part of
wolf conservation.
Translation: Wolf hunters want to kill wolves. The license fees are an added bonus.

6. Enhance open and effective communication to better inform decisions
Translation: Uh-huh

7. Learn and improve as we go.
Translation: Kill more wolves.

 ===

Montana continues to claim they know how many wolves actually reside in the state when Jay Mallonee, a Montana wolf biologist with over twenty years experience studying canis lupus,  has repeatedly challenged them on this:

From Wolf and Wildlife Studies

“Management agencies have claimed that the recovery and public hunting of wolves is based in science. A review of their statistics demonstrated that data collection methods did not follow a scientific protocol which resulted in flawed and often incorrect data. Consequently, agencies do not know the total number of wolves in Montana, a major reference point used by wolf managers. Therefore, the quotas proposed for public wolf hunts are completely arbitrary, and management decisions in general have not been based on facts. This has produced a wolf management system that lacks scientific perspective and does not utilize what is known about the wolves’ role in sustaining healthy ecosystems. Instead, the absence of verifiable data suggests that management decisions are often based on opinion and politics rather than science.”

I’m sure the trapping and trophy hunting communities  will be well represented, chomping at the bit to make sure Montana allows them to kill, kill and kill more wolves, especially using the medieval torture device, the leg-hold trap.

I can pretty much guarantee that no matter what happens in Kalispell today wolves will be trapped and killed in the coming Montana 2012/2013 wolf witch hunt.

 Wolf Meeting Planned For Flathead

FLATHEAD COUNTY

By Scott Zoltan

POSTED: 10:10 pm MDT June 10, 2012

KALISPELL, Mont. — On Wednesday it’s the Flathead’s turn to host a meeting on a proposed trapping season for wolves, and an extended general hunting season. There would also be no statewide quota under the proposed rules.

FWP is considering a general season that would run from September 1 to February 28 in 2013. There would be quotas set up in two areas near Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks.

Hunters would still have to report harvests within 24 hours, and the FWP would reserve the ability to shut down the season in certain areas to prevent overharvest.

FWP officials have already held meetings in Billings, Bozeman, Missoula and Great Falls, but they’re still hoping for a large turnout at Kalispell’s meeting.

“It’s really important that people do get their voices heard,” said FWP Spokesman John Fraley.

The open-house meeting will start at 7:00 pm on Wednesday at the Flathead Valley Community College Arts and Technology building.
