Fantasies of killing become increasingly bizarre

Lynne Stone, longtime wolf advocate and executive director of Northern Idaho’s Boulder White Cloud Council in Ketchum, couldn’t help but laugh. For the last two years she has routinely petitioned the Idaho Dept of Fish and Game for every single “ Big Game Mortality Report” filed on wolves killed by hunters —several hundred of them since the animals lost Endangered Species Act protect. Hunters and trappers are required to send in the report along with the skull and pelt for examination. In mid-January Stone ran across a November 2012 report that stated, “DNA came back as a domestic dog,” a light-skinned one.

“Buy a wolf tag, shoot a dog, claim it was a wolf, get bragging rights and a dog-skin rug,” she chuckled “Life is wonderful in 3rd world Idaho. Is anyone missing a light-colored mutt? Maybe it’s time folks put orange vests and hats on their dogs.”

Gallows humor is all wolf supporters have left. In February 2011, Congress removed gray wolves in the northern Rockies from protection by the Endangered Species Act, the first time a species has ever been delisted for political reasons. Before that, the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s reintroduction of wolves to the northern Rockies in the mid-1990s appeared to be one of the greatest conservation successes in decades. Wolves had been killed off in the West in the late nineteenth and early centuries. But while tourists from all over the country came to Yellowstone in hopes of seeing “Cinderella” or “Limpy” — many of the wolves became named — in the Rockies a reactionary political movement developed against the animals.

What gives with the number changes? Can’t they count? Did they lose two wolves?

I haven’t been saving the individual daily counts but now I am. This has happened several times. Idaho’s counts have changed too. It’s bad enough having to do this but seeing the numbers go up and down  is even more maddening

There are no words for this disgusting display of cowardice and brutality. Why are these wolves dead?  What is their crime? That they live and breathe air?

All who are silent are guilty. All who made this possible are guilty. All who pulled the trigger, shot the arrows, used the poison, set the traps and snares, baited and called,  tracked the collars, killed the babies, killed the mothers, killed the fathers, killed the brothers, killed the sisters, killed without mercy, killed with black hearts, tortured, maimed, chased, bludgeoned, strangled, stalked and stabbed have my utter and complete contempt.

We will stop this madness, we will end this nightmare, we will save America’s wolves from this butchery, no matter how long it takes or the sacrifices we have to make. We will never give up, we will not capitulate. We are legion.

For the wolves,

Nabeki

Will You?

This post is dedicated to all wolves who’ve suffered and continue to suffer brutal, senseless deaths in the name of blood sport and agribusiness.

The brutal war against America’s wolves wages on?

Will you be silent?

Will you fight for them?

Will you allow this to continue?

Will you organize in your hometown?

Will you hold a protest?

Will you work to end public land grazing?

Will you write letters to the editor?

Will you write to the Infamous 81 US Senators  who voted to delist wolves in the Northern Rockies via budget rider?

Will you tell those Senators you WILL NOT VOTE FOR THEM on November 6 because of their betrayal?

Will you boycott all wolf states that hold trophy hunts or kill wolves for agribusiness?

Will you boycott Yellowstone National Park to send Wyoming a message?

Will you spread this message to everyone you know?

Will you be a true Wolf Warrior?

Will you?

CBD ALERT: New Wyoming Wolf Plan Will Allow Killing of Hundreds of Wolves…

Eleven member wolf pack in winter, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming (2001)

For Immediate Release, April 30, 2012

CHEYENNE, Wyo.—  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today that Wyoming has passed legislation and an amendment to its wolf-management plan that will meet federal approval and trigger removal of Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in the state.

The new law and plan — to take effect later this year when wolves are removed from the federal endangered species list — increase the area of Wyoming where wolves would be designated “predators” and could be killed without limit; they also keep in place a “trophy game management area,” where hunting will be allowed to dramatically reduce wolf populations.

“ Wyoming ’s wolf-management plan is a recipe for wolf slaughter that will only serve to incite more of the prejudice against wolves that led to their destruction in the first place,” said Michael Robinson of the Center for Biological Diversity, which has been working for two decades to save and recover wolves throughout the West. “Removal of federal protections for wolves has been a disaster in Idaho and Montana and will be even worse in Wyoming .”

While wolves would remain fully protected within Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, elsewhere in Wyoming they would be subject to shooting, trapping and snaring, including 83 percent of the state where they will be considered “predators” and there will be no limits on their killing. The remaining portion of the state would be considered a “trophy game management area,” where killing wolves would be permitted, with the goal of reducing the population from approximately 29 packs to around 10.

“Along with the killing of wolves in Idaho and Montana , which had their protection taken away last year through a back-door congressional rider, this planned persecution of wolves in Wyoming could be devastating to the beautiful animals’ survival in the northern Rocky Mountains ,” said Robinson. “Killing most of Wyoming ’s wolves will hurt wolves in Colorado , too, where they’re only starting to return by way of Wyoming .”

Since wolf hunting and trapping seasons opened last fall, 378 wolves have been killed in Idaho , which has no cap on killing and several ongoing open seasons. An additional 166 wolves were killed in Montana , which has now closed its season. Contrary to promises, hunting and trapping have appeared to inflame anti-wolf sentiment, with comments and pictures appearing on the Internet that boast of wolf killing and call for more slaughter.

The Fish and Wildlife Service has reopened a two-week comment period, during which feedback is sought from the public before the agency finalizes the delisting rule.

Background

In October 2011 the Obama administration announced finalization of an agreement between the Fish and Wildlife Service and Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead whereby the agency would remove wolves in Wyoming from the federal endangered species list and the state would only be required to keep alive 100 wolves or 10 breeding pairs outside Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks (which together provide habitat for a few dozen wolves that would remain protected while in the parks).

After pups are born within the next few weeks, it is likely that more than 500 wolves will live outside the national parks in Wyoming . The state plan will allow their unregulated killing throughout most of the state.

The Center for Biological Diversity is a national, nonprofit conservation organization with more than 350,000 members and online activists dedicated to the protection of endangered species and wild places.

ACTION ALERT: Please Comment On Wyoming’s Bad Wolf Plan by Tomorrow, January 13, 2012…

“Reintroduced wolves being carried to acclimation pens, Yellowstone National Park, January, 1995″

Time is running out to comment on Wyoming’s horrific wolf  “management plan”, a euphemism for killing wolves. Please let your voice be heard and tell Wyoming what you think about their “wolf plan” that would allow unregulated killing of wolves in much of the  state.

The Plan

“Under the agreement, negotiated by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials and Gov. Matt Mead, the state’s roughly 243 wolves living outside of Yellowstone National Park and the Wind River Indian Reservation could be killed on sight in all but the northwest part of the state, where they would be designated as trophy game and could only be hunted with a license.

The plan also establishes a flex zone covering northern Sublette and Lincoln counties, as well as southern Teton County, in which wolves would be protected only from Oct. 15 until the end of the following February.”

===

Talking Points

•Wolves are vital to a thriving ecosystem. They keep elk healthy by culling the old, sick and weak. Having wolves on the landscape push elk and other ungulates to keep moving (ecology of fear), preventing over-browsing of young trees,  specifically ash and cottonwood along stream beds. This is called a trophic cascade.

•Wolves are accused of effecting rancher’s bottom line by preying heavily on cattle. In fact this couldn’t be further from the truth.  In 2010, Wyoming ranchers lost 37,100 cows to non-predation. Wolves were responsible for just 26 cows and 33 sheep losses, yet 40 wolves were killed in response.

•Wolves are blamed for decimating elk numbers in Wyoming. The truth is in 2010 there were 120,000 elk in the state up from 95,000 in 2009, plenty of elk by any standards. There are close to 400,000 (371, 000) elk in the tri-state area Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.

•Assigning “predator status” to wolves, in 90% of the state, is essentially a death sentence for Wyoming wolves.

•Wolves in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National park will be in grave danger from this “plan”

•Wolves are an economic bonanza for the Greater Yellowstone Area or GYA. They generate 35 million annually to the area. Tourists flock from all over the world to Yellowstone,  just to get a glimpse of a wild wolf. They are the rock stars of the park. Yet Wyoming is willing jeopardize  park wolves and all wolves in the state just to please a small, vocal group of hunting and ranching interests.

•”Predator status” means wolves can be killed at any time for any reason in 90% of the state. They can be run over by ATV’s and snowmobiles or chased by these vehicles until they drop dead. They can be tortured and nobody will be the wiser, because a license won’t be needed to kill a wolf. The only requirement is the wolf killer report the killing to the state.  Sort of like being on the buddy system with no incentive to report.

•This “plan” will destroy wolf families and leave wolves unprotected from the fierce hatred of anti-wolf factions. They could suffer unimaginable torment.

•The current plan is almost identical to the one USFWS rejected for years as insufficient.  What has changed?

•Let them know you will be boycotting Wyoming, specifically Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP,  until they stop the push to exterminate wolves in the state.

• Be courteous but resolute

From EarthJustice

Defend Protections For Wolves

Northern Rockies wolves are in peril! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently proposed to remove wolves in Wyoming from the endangered species list. This deadly proposal would allow unlimited, shoot-on-sight killing of wolves in nearly 90 percent of the state.

Under intense political pressure from Wyoming state officials, the Fish and Wildlife Service cut a deal that could hand wolf management over to the state, allowing politics—not science—to decide the fate of wolves in the region.

Independent scientists say that 2,000 to 3,000 wolves are needed for a sustainable, fully recovered population. But at the end of last year, only an estimated 1,650 wolves were living in the Northern Rockies—with just 343 wolves in Wyoming.

The federal government has spent 16 years and millions of dollars to reintroduce wolves in the West. This proposal combined with the recent congressional delisting and hunting of wolves in Idaho and Montana threatens their very survival. Help us fight back against this deadly proposal.

Take action to speak out for strong wolf protections and a plan that supports a full recovery for the species.
