This is a sad day for Montana.

Hunter Perry Zumwalt of Roberts shot the first wolf in this year’s Montana wolf season, Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials reported today shortly afternoon.
Aasheim said information was limited and he did not know the gender of the wolf.
Hunters have 12 hours to report a wolf kill to FWP, and then they must produce the hide and skull to an FWP agent within 10 days.
Aasheim said he didn’t know how Zumwalt reported the kill.
“We have been telling people that cell phones are more effective than you think,” Aasheim said. “We also have wardens patrolling and they will consider the effort a hunter makes.”
The wolf quota in the area Zumwalt shot his wolf is 12.

The future of all big game depends on us hunters to manage the wolf to a level that wont impact the deer and elk numbers in the west…

I can understand your concern about elk numbers but I can tell you that if the wolf was left alone, without being “managed”, they would disperse to others areas of the US to start new packs. Wolves are natural dispersers and have already started to move into Oregon, Washington, Colorado and Utah. By the states intervening and killing off an apex predator, like the wolf, they are actually increasing the chances of livestock predation and weakening elk and deer herds. Loss of our top predators is wreaking havoc on ecosystems.
I am not anti-hunting, just against managing predators.
