Swedish Wolves Slaughtered At Skane Wildlife Park

Hysteria reigned in Horby, Sweden when several captured wolves from a pack, rumored to have as many as twelve members, escaped their enclosure at the Skane Wildlife Park.  The wolves tore down their fence. The wildlife park was evacuated, even though officials admitted there was never any danger.  The entire wolf pack was killed, including pups of the year.

Killing an entire pack of captive wolves for escaping their enclosure is an unbelievably bad decision!!  Why couldn’t they have just rounded them up?  What is going on in Sweden?  Why wouldn’t they have darted them with tranquilizers and put them back in their pen?  This is outrageous!!

Escaped pack of wolves killed in Sweden

Jan. 10, 2010 at 1:05 PM

HORBY, Sweden, Jan. 10 (UPI) — A spokesman for a wildlife park near Horby, Sweden, said a pack of wolves was shot and killed after escaping from their sanctuary.
A Skane Wildlife Park spokesman said the wolves managed to tear down a sanctuary fence and escape, creating a dangerous situation during park visiting hours, the Swedish news agency TT reported Sunday.

The spokesman said while members of the public were never at risk, the park was evacuated as a precaution.

Foreman Johan Lindstrom voiced displeasure at having to kill the escaped wolves, but maintained the decision was likely the right thing to do given the situation.

“This was unbelievably tragic and stressful,” Lindstrom said. “We think we dealt with this in the right way.”

The exact number of wolves killed in the recent incident was not released. The Skane Wildlife Park contains more than 800 animals representing nearly 80 different species, TT reported.

  1. It leaves me rather speachless and appalled. They “think” they did the right thing. Their paniciky actions led to so much slaughter..I’m sadden by the needless loss. For the wild ones.

  2. All they needed to do was to ‘shepherd’ them in the direction they wanted – stand to block the wolf’s path arms out (make yourself look big basically), make it so they can only go the way -you- want. Then its simply a matter of either pressing them into another free enclosure or into crates. All it takes is intuition, patience and wits. Either that or tranquillise them. Food works too.
What they did was entirely unnecessary.

    • John…It was a terrible decision on their part. My god, people capture wolves all the time for collaring. It’s not as if they were chasing a lion pride or something. Complete overreaction and I’m sure Sweden is feeling the heat over this.

  3. Actually, it is even worse:

Acording to articles in Swedish media, it was only two wolves that escaped. The park´s spokesperson said that the park management had to make the decision to kill the entire pack including puppies born in May 2009, because they would all start trying to escape as well!

    • Katerina…that was just awful. What could they have been thinking? Sweden is joining Idaho and Montana in wolf infamy.

  4. Wolves are escape artists, no argument there.
    Solution: build a better fence.

    • On a another note, I’m completly fascinated by the RT wolves. You can see the den site right in the middle of the screen. The pups are in there but then I thought I saw the alpha or mother picking one up and carrying it around. I’m hooked. Can’t wait to see the pups!!
