Action Alert: Please Protest New Policy On Wolf Killing!!

As I reported in Wolf Wars Part 2: Wolves Under The Gun In Montana And The Rest Of The Northern Rockies!, Montana FWP has given Wildlife Services the power to kill wolves without having to consult with them.  The old policy was bad enough. Federal agents kill hundreds of wolves each year for livestock depredation. This will only increase Wildlife Services power in Montana over wolves.

As I’ve stated many times, wolves kill very few livestock and when they do it’s often the result of poor animal husbandry practices by ranchers who leave cattle or sheep unattended on public and private land. Many ranchers don’t remove cow carcasses that die from other causes then predation.  If wolves are caught feeding on those carcasses they can be killed.  Remember over 500 wolves died in the Northern Rockies in 2009. Now we have a federal agency, Wildlife Services, given the power to act alone when killing wolves.  This is starting to resemble the 20th century, when federal agents exterminated wolves in the West.

Montana FWP is using the excuse Montana has too many wolves and that’s why they’ve given Wildlife Services broadened autority to kill wolves. How can 450 to 500 wolves be too many in a state the size of Montana with such a small human population when Minnestota has 3000 wolves and five million people.  This is a smokescreen people, don’t buy into it.

From the Missoulian:

Too many wolves: FWP gives wildlife agents more authority to kill problem predators

By EVE BYRON Helena Independent Record | Posted: Sunday, March 7, 2010

In a hearing before the Environmental Quality Council, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks director Joe Maurier said federal Wildlife Services agents no longer need FWP authorization to kill wolves at or near confirmed livestock depredation sites.

The agents also will be able to immediately kill any wolves that are trapped when they return to those sites to feed on dead livestock.

    • SL…It may be pissing into the wind but they’re a federal agency and therefore answer to the American people not to just Montana or any one state. This new wolf killing policy in Montana is completely egregious and they should hear from us about it.

We have to continue to let them know that Americans are watching what they are doing. I think it is helpful. Just as writng a letter to the editor in support of wolves is helpful.

      • For howling out loud. Can’t people just get that they are all endangered speices. And just stop the hunt. There is no way that there can be to many wolves if they just keep hunting them. It just makes me sick that they don’t even give the wolves a chance. Even if the exsus isn’t that there are to many of them, there is always some lame exsus. Like they are killing my cows, or something like that, that there is a reason for.

    • Hi Svear,
A tragedy is unfolding here in the Northern Rockies. Once wolves were delisted and their welfare was handed back to the states of Idaho and Montana, things have gone steadily down hill. Wolf hunts were initiated mere months after wolves lost their Endangered Species Protection. We lost over 500 wolves in the Northern Rockies in 2009 and the Idaho hunts are still ongoing. Montana just gave Wildlife Services the green light to kill wolves without first getting a directive from them. Things are deteriorating daily for wolves here.

Thanks for reading the blog and caring about wolves!

Predator Defense would also be a worthy organization to contribute to. Their mission statement: “Our mission is to protect native predators and create alternatives for people to coexist with wildlife.” They are working tirelessly to stop Wildlife Services use of deadly poisons in the trapping and killing of our native carnivores and wildlife. Their website is: http://www.predatordefense.org/.

Thanks for caring and glad to hear there are wolves in Germany,

I would love for you goof balls to live with the wolves for one day, cause they can kill and eat a 1200 pound moose in hours. You would be gone like the elk that I’m trying to take my boys out to hunt….

      • smokinjo..please take your anti-wolf bs somewhere else, it doesn’t fly here. You really need new talking points because repeating the same tired rhetoric is getting very old. I happen to live in the Northern Rockies and have probably had more contact with wild wolves then you ever had so stop with “I’m the insider crap”. Wolves are predators and it’s called nature. Have you ever watched a grizzly bear, mountain lion or any other large carnivore take down prey? You act like you don’t understand what predation is all about. Wolves are supposed to eat ungulates, that’s why they were put on this earth.

If you want to see real horror, visit a factory farm and see what man has wrought there. Or how about the slob hunters? The most dangerous predator on earth is not the wolf it’s man. Please.

  6. Agnes – The contacts that Nabeki has listed on this web-site are your best bet to help, but there is also another web-site called ‘the petition site’ at http://www.thepetitionsite.com where there are several petitions for wolves by Defenders of Wildlife. You just need to click on the category environmental/wildlife and you will find them. There is also another TAB called CLICK TO DONATE where you can click a button for wolves everyday and the advertisement sponsors will donate funds to Defenders of Wildlife. Hope this helps.

  7. Nabeki – DOW is just now sending out e-mails to supporters about the new policy and states that their Rocky Mountain team is gearing up to make peace during the conflict. Were they in attendance at the Helena meeting? Didn’t Marc go to that meeting? On the same e-mail, they said their TV ad has been running in Wash DC all week and will also be shown on the Sunday morning talk shows – you know, the political hot beds that they have on every week. I hope something wakes up Obama. I know he has a lot on his plate, but we need the wolves back on ESL pronto.

    Like

    • Hi Lyndell,
DOW was not at the meeting in Helena nor were any of the big orgs. I don’t understand why they weren’t there since the decisions that were made by Montana FWP will have such a huge impact on the way wolves are managed under the 10j rule. Wildlife Services no longer has to get permission from Montana FWP to kill wolves. Wolves can be shot on sight if they are found near a dead cow. I’m really disappointed that the big orgs didn’t go because wolves had just a few supporters there. I don’t think the general public was aware of what was going to happen, otherwise more people would have gone.

As for Obama I have no hope he will do anything, After all it was his Secretary of the Interior that delisted wolves in the first place and Obama looks like a delegator, not a hands on President. I don’t think he knows anything about wolves or the havoc that is reigning down on them because of his bad decision. Our only hope is with Molloy.

  8. What is wrong with these Wildlife Services giving the ok for these outrageous killings. Do they want the wolves extinct? If this continues with the wolf then what animal is next?

Idaho, Montana, Alaska & other states need to stop the unjust killing of the wolves. Why did Obama not do anything since it was his Secretary of the Interior that delisted the wolves? I would like to know if this was ever brought to his attention, did he know of their situation if not, listen to the people’s voices in this matter.

Please help and protect the wolves.

    • Hi Sharon,
I really think Obama is clueless when it comes to wolves. He put a rancher in charge of the Interiior and this is what we get, the wolves delisted. It’s a complete shame because the wildlife viewing public has to sit by helplessly as the states of Idaho, Wyoming and Montana slaughter wolves for agribusiness. Of course we can’t forget hunting and how it influences state game agencies policies.. They manage for hunters. Unfortunately for the wolf, hunters like to kill the same animals for sport as the wolf needs to survive.

We have to keep speaking out for wolves, we are their only voice.

      Thanks for reading and caring.

    • Hi DarkInuNeko,
I don’t post links to that site but thanks for the heads up. I’m very well aware of this website, it’s just propaganda to demonize wolves. Apparently anti-wolfers aren’t aware wolves are predators and actually kill to survive. It would be the same as posting pictures of grizzly bear or lion kills. Meanwhile elk hunters run around in the woods, spending thousands of dollars on high powered rifles, ammunition, camouflage, etc. to kill elk. Yes elk hunters love elk to death. If you want to see the damage wolf hunters do there are disgusting pictures of dead wolves on FB and the Internet in general. Some of them are so brutal they are hard to look at. Who is the real thrill killer? Not wolves. That’s what I would tell your cousin.

The wolf spirit dances in sunshine and rain
In all four of our seasons, without any disdain

    • I agree Denise. Something needs to be done. Business as usual is not cutting it. BUT wolf advocates have to organize and push back against these brutal policies that are benefiting two small vocal minorites, ranchers and hunters. Unless and until people are willing to commit their time and energy, nothing will change.

I’m trying to get the word out and speak the truth about wolves. But we need more.

      1. Local groups organizing in every state where wolves roam.

      2. We need lobbyists in state capitals to keep the finger on legislation that would effect wolves or any of our native carnivovres. But this all takes money and time.

      3. Supporting Wildearth Guardians in their effort to have Wildlife Services defunded. WS is doing major damage to wolves in the Northern Rockies.

      4. Any payments to ranchers for lost livestock should be tied to their using non-lethal methods to deter wolves. In fact wolf predation is a red herring. Out of six million cattle in the Northern Rockies, wolves were only responsible for 214 cattle deaths yet hundreds of wolves died for agribusiness. All predation encompasses just 1% of all cattle deaths, yet the media and ranchers have blown this out of proportion and they have the state game agencies on their side.

So many things need to be done. This is just the tip of the iceburg but I’m convinced we can make a difference.
