Don’t Forget To Comment On The Increased Wolf Hunt Quotas…Deadline June 14

Please don’t forget to comment on the terrible increase of wolf hunt quotas, by the Montana FWP commissioners. The deadline is June 14.

Just to refresh, Montana is going after wolves with a vengeance.

Wildlife Services is killing entire packs for agribusiness and Montana FWP wants to double to almost triple the wolf hunt quota from the current 75 to between 153 and 216, for the 2010 wolf hunt season. PLEASE TELL THEM NO TO INCREASING WOLF HUNT QUOTAS.  This is a war on wolves, make no mistake about that.

Please CLICK HERE to read the post I did on the in the increased wolf hunt quotas and the hearings that were held throughout Montana last Wednesday, June 2, 2010.

CLICK HERE to post your comments to Montana FWP commissioners. Please tell them NO to any increase in the wolf hunt quotas, that wolves on the landscape are a good thing for the state. Ask them to stop “managing” wolves for hunters and ranchers.

Please use the articles and post below I’ve provided as talking points to explain the ecological benefits of having wolves on the landscape, when you compose your comments.

Apparently the commissioners want comments that explain in detail why we need wolves and why they shouldn’t raise the hunt quotas. I know it’s hard to believe we have to explain to these people why wolves are important, when they should already know the answers.

One other point, please remind the commissioners that you may not be a hunter or rancher but the state of Montana should be representing all its citizens not just two small vocal minorities.

Tell them every wolf they kill reduces the chance for wildlife watchers to view them in the wild. We have just as much right to view wildlife alive as hunters want to kill our wildlife.

If you are out-of-state remind the commissioners you may not want to visit Montana and spend tourist dollars here if they continue to carry out such brutal practices against wolves by reducing their population to mere shadows on the landscape.

Tell them this was not the purpose of ESA, to start slaughtering wolves almost immediately after they were delisted. Inform them Minnesota has 3500 wolves, in a smaller state with more people and a very large deer herd. Wolves haven’t decimated the ungulates there. Why does Montana feel they need to reduce the population of wolves in this way when Minnesota has vowed if their wolves were ever delisted they would hold a FIVE YEAR MORATORIUM on any wolf hunt, or no wolf hunt.

Yellowstone wolves bring in millions of dollars to the GYA (Greater Yellowstone Area), much more than hunting does for that area. The commissioners should be thinking of tapping into eco-tourism dollars that wolves generate, instead of trying to eliminate them for ranchers and hunters.

Many people have written to me saying they are taking their tourist dollars elsewhere because of the way gray wolves are treated in Montana.

    • SoCalWolfGal,
These are the comments concerning the increases in Montana’s wolf hunt quota. They are increasing the quota from the current 75 to between 153, 186 or 216. They are taking comments about it until June 14, which is Monday. When you write please be specfic about why this is so wrong. Number one this is a newly delisted species, barely one year off the endangered species list and they want to hunt them more aggressively while Wildlife Services kills them for agribusiness.

I linked to the article written by George Wuerthner, The West needs more, not fewer, wolves”. You can use it for talking points about why we shouldn’t be killing wolves. Apparently the commissioners aren’t going to pay attention to any comments that just say…Please don’t kill wolves or Don’t kill the wolves. They want to know specifically why. Of course this is hypocritical because the state isn’t using any science based reason to go after wolves with such a vengence but that’s the way it is.

The oral arguments before Judge Molloy happen on June 15, Tuesday. That’s concerning the federal delisting lawsuit. So that’s super important, because if he rules to relist wolves all the hunting issues will go away, at least in the short term. Who knows what the wolf hating side will do. I’m sure they will appeal the decision to the Ninth Circuit.

Wolves have now become the scapegoat for every wolf haters problems. I’m sure next they’ll be blamed for breaking up someone’s marriage or working for the CIA. This is getting totally out of control and this couldn’t be a better example of why wolves need ESA protection. I don’t think they can exist without it, they are just too persecuted.

      • Okay, thanks for clarifying Nabeki. And I think you are right. If they are not re-listed and protected by the Feds, I don’t even want to think what is going to happen.

  4. I VOTED 3 TIMES….CAN WE WRITE TO THE JUDGE MOLLOY? MAYBE MY QUESTION IS STUPIDE…

    Like

    • Thanks so much for voting Agnes. Unfortunately we can’t write to Judge Molloy, he has to rule on the merits of the case and will only consider what the attorneys present to him. But I believe he will relist them, I’m sure he is watching this charade that’s going on. Even though that won’t be part of the case I think he can’t help but notice how crazy things have gotten.

  5. I voted and sent them a comment, though I don’t think they will listen to anyone other than hunters and ranchers right now. Everything depends on Judge Molly and his ruling now. Last year, the wolf hunt started on my birthday, September 1st. I’m really hoping for a better present this year.

    • This has been an unbelievable year Katie. I never imagined it would get this bad but it must be like it was when wolves were exterminated in the West the first time. It’s totally out of control and the wolves need ESA protection. How awful the wolf hunt started on your birthday. I believe Judge Molloy will relist them and you’ll have a much better birthday this year. I think he’ll probably rule in August but who knows, all I can to hear is they are back on the list. Then all the craziness will stop at least for awhile BUT Montana is saying they are trying to find a way to have wolf hunts even if Judge Molloy relists them. Can you imagine that? And these are the people that are supposed to be managing wolves and looking out for their interests. It’s the hunters and ranchers they are looking out for.

  6. A word about your commentsto MFWP…………Bob Reem, chairman of the FWP commission who will decide these hunt quotas was very specific in what they want to see included in the comments. They must include more than just….”I don’t want any wolves killed ”
Must cite reasons like…..disrupts pack integrity which results in more predations:
affects numerous mesopredators: destroys natural balance of ecosystems etc
Check out this blog for lots of wolf ecology and ideas.

    • Thanks Jerry, for the info. I’ll add that to the post.

I included George Wuerthners article for talking points and I’m going to link to the article on Cristina Eisenburg, who explains why wolves are so important to the ecosystem. How sad we have to justify the wolves existence to people that should already know better.

  7. Yes…..Cristina Eisenberg’s research is also very valuable to include in comments.
Another good point is that it’s the responsibility of the MFWP Commission to manage wildlife for EVERYONE in the state including those that are wildlife watchers, photographers etc. Instead they manage based on what “special interests” such as hunters and cow growers desire. This has to stop.

    • Jerry Black, I couldn’t have said it better. It is clear who Montana is catering to. What about the wildlife watchers in MT who want to view wolves? Most hunters in MT are bitter and angry that wolves are more efficient predators than they are at killing elk. Those 300 wolves that will likely be killed in Mt ( I am counting all of the wolves ws will likely kill), that is 300 less chances a wildlife watcher gets to see a wolf in the wild. It is disgusting. All hunters care about is killing themselves an elk.

    • Thanks Jerry for the suggestion. We are so caught up in what the hunters are doing we forget Montana should be managing wildlife for all it’s citizens not just hunters and ranchers. I will bring that point up in the post!!
