APNewsBreak: Third Mexican gray wolf found dead

Associated Press – July 16, 2010 5:55 PM ET

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – Federal authorities confirmed Friday they are investigating the death of another endangered Mexican gray wolf that was found shot along the New Mexico-Arizona border.

The male wolf is the third to be found dead within the past month. It was a member of the Hawks Nest Pack.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokesman Tom Buckley called the latest death “very troubling.” He says that leaves the Hawks Nest Pack with an alpha female and a yearling female to hunt for seven pups.

The pack’s alpha male was found shot to death last month on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.

Another alpha male, a member of the San Mateo Pack, was found dead of unknown causes a week later.

Buckley says there was a cow found shot to death near where the latest wolf shooting death occurred.

  4. I find the whole thing troubling and disturbing. These wolves, along with the rest, need the Endangered Species protection. From what I was informed there are only 42 lobos left. That guy in the cowboy hat,Salazar, better wake up along with Obama. You got problems, they better get their acts together.U.S.Fish and Wild life better get their act together for it’s show time.Futhermore,if they (poachers) are caught they better not just give them a slap on the hands, either.I am going to find myself saying I’m sorry to everyone on this post if I start using profanity.I’m fit to be tied.

    • Rita…USFWS has given those radio receivers out like candy to the ranchers. Lord only knows who has access to them. There is no way to find (now 38 wolves) in almost six million acres of land without tracking them by their collars. The USFWS is just as guilty in this because for so many years they let ranchers have their way with this tiny population of endangered wolves. Now they have to back pedal. It’s their fault!!

  5. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife has done so little since 1995 forward. The so- called huners are truly cold blooded killers. They don’t need to kill wolves for sustenance or any other honest reason. When they kill Mexican wolves, Timber wolves, and red wolves they simply do so for the port of it. I guarantee you that wolf won’t be found on their dinner tables!

At least those of us who are military veterans of Korea, Viet Nam, the Gulf War, Iraq and the other many military ops our country has been invoved in since 1789 had a valid reason, if there really is one, to take the lives of other men. With weapons of all kinds it was a situation of kill or be killed… not so with wolves and armed predators, ie mankind.

I can’t honestly bring myselfe to beleve that any of these wolf killers are service veterans who know the value of life and living!

    • I totally agree David that USFWS has done very little to save these wolves and now they’re scrambling. Shame.

    • Actually Vasieios Mexican gray wolves are raised in captive breeding facilities so they can then be released into the wild. Their home is the Southwest and we can’t give up and let the poachers win, we have to keep fighting for them but the feds have to get serious about prosecuting these poachers!!!

  8. No, not a stupid solution Vasileios if no one cared about wildlife and what’s left of wilderness areas where wildlife can still exist. But millions of people do care and there are still millions of acres left for that balance to be a goal if enough people become aware, and they write, email and pester the “powers to be” in a positive, intelligent way.
