New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson Suspends Trapping in Wolf Recovery Area

Middle Fork Pack alphas both  missing their front legs, Alpha male AM871 lost his limb to a leg hold trap.

What a breath of fresh air. Positive wolf news for a change.  Governor Bill Richardson has suspended trapping on the NM side of the wolf recovery area for six months.  He wants to know what effect trapping has on the highly endangered Mexican gray wolf population and has ordered New Mexico Fish and Game to study the issue.

Actually they don’t have to do a study, I can tell you trapping is devastating to all animals, including gray wolves. The alpha male of the Middle Fork pack lost his front leg to a trap. He and his mate are both missing their front legs. The alpha female lost her front leg to a bullet.

Even though this is a suspension for six months and not a permanent ban it certainly is a step in the right direction. We need to get traps and snares off all public lands.

I commend the Governor for doing something pro-active for wolves. We should write and thank him for his efforts.

    • Hi Agnes,
I think Governor Richardson took a first step banning trapping in the wolf recovery area for six months. It’s a small win but considering the Middle Fork Pack alpha male lost his front limb to a leg hold trap, I welcome every little victory, no matter how small.

    • Isn’t it great Rita to be able to say thank you to someone? I share your feelings exactly.

Still on pins and needles over what Judge Molloy will do, it’s almost August. They’ll be selling wolf tags pretty soon.

  5. A victory is a victory.

So, let’s study the effects of trapping on Mexican Grey Wolves…ok… take a look at the photos of the Middle Fork alpha pair and take a few seconds to let the fact that one of them lost a leg to a trap sink in. The verdict on the effects of trapping shouldn’t be too hard to work out.

    • John, I’m with you, you don’t need twenty biolgists to figure out trapping and snares are deadly for all wildlife and pets. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

    • Hi Vasieios,
Yes a little good news is very welcome. Of course their shouldn’t be trapping in the wolf recovery area at all or for that matter on any public lands but at least the wolves have a six month break.

  7. DEAR NABEKI! I UNDERSTAND YOU VERY WELL.BUT I’M SO UPSET,SO SAD,SO DESPERATE HOW WOLVES ARE PERSECUTING, KILLING SO CRUELY, KILLING BY WOLVES-HATERS JUST FOR FUN, FOR SPORT, FOR NOTHING,BECAUSE “WE CAN”…YES,IT’S A VERY LITTLE VICTORY…BUT I HOPE THE GOVERNOR WILL DO BETTER…IT’S NOTHING WHAT I SAY…I NEVER CRY IN MY LIFE HOW I CRY NOW FOR WOLVES.MEXICAN GREY WOLVES ARE NEEDING VERY SERIOUS PROTECTION. THEY ARE IN MY HEART! GOD BLESS ALL WOLVES ON THIS CRUEL WORLD! HOWLS!

    • Hi Agnes,
I know it’s so heartbreaking. It keeps me up at nights. Especially the thought of a wolf archery season, just gives me shivers. But I’m trying to focus on what’s coming next, hoping Judge Molloy will relist wolves and then we can move on to organizing to save them. If they are aren’t relisted, god forbid, then our challenge will be even greater but we’ll never give up no matter what they throw at us. Things are changing and these brutal wildlife “management” programs to benefit ranching and hunting are going to change. People are much more aware we are losing our wildplaces and wolves symbolize that better then any other animal. I have hope through all the sadness Agnes.

  8. My hat is off to Governor Richardson for having the courage to do the right thing! I think Richardson or Bobby Kennedy would be a great replacement for Salazar at the Dept. of Interior!!

    • Marc I thought trapping was banned in the wolf recovery area? How can they recover a species when there are traps all over the place? At least Governor Richardson has taken action, I hope the traps are banned for good.
