When I started this journey it was a very dark time for wolves. They were hunted in two states and Wildlife Services was continuing to conduct “shadow wolf” hunts for agribusiness.
Wolf advocates were stunned when the Obama administration followed in the footsteps of George Bush and stripped wolves of their ESA protections. The year that followed was the worst wolves have experienced in the Northern Rockies since their reintroduction.
The inspiration for this blog came from the iconic wolf Limpy, who was shot dead outside Daniel, Wyoming on the very day the then Bush administration delisted wolves the first time, in March 08. He died for nothing, a sad end for a stellar wolf. This blog is dedicated to his memory.

It’s been an unbelievable year, watching our beloved wolves slaughtered in the hundreds. So many stories went untold. So much death. Remember this?

Over five hundred wolves died in the Northern Rockies in 2009 and they continue to be targeted by Wildlife Services for agribusiness.
Gray wolves remain under siege from ranching and hunting lobbies. Robbed of their wolf hunts, they are scheming and plotting, trying to find a way to undo Judge Molloy’s decision to relist wolves.
But we are here to stand with wolves, stronger every day, determined to fight on, we will never give up and never give in. May this be a better year for our wolf brethren. Onward Wolf Warriors!

Hi Vasileios…thank you so much and I know you feel the same way I do about wolves and as do all the wolf friends on this blog. This is a movement and we’re just getting started. The sleeping giant of wolf advocates and animal lovers in this country will be a force to be reckoned with. We just aren’t organized well enough yet but I see the kindness of people on FB trying desperately to find homes for stray dogs, wolf dogs and even wolves. There is so much goodness in this country we just never see it reported. We are in this battle for the long haul.

I feel safe knowing you are out there and have my back. It can be scary and lonely sometimes writing what I do but I know my loyal readers and wolf friends are there to pick me up. We have to win this battle no matter how long it takes. LOL on the short hunters. Napoleon complex much? You actually see the same behavior in small dogs.
I know how passionate you are about animals and how dedicated to this battle you are. Wolves are symbols of freedom and of our wild places we want to preserve for our children and grandchildren. The haters don’t own the wolves, they don’t own the elk and they have no right to do what they are doing except some trumped up fish and game agency grabbed the power over our wildlife and are holding them in a head lock. We have to remind them there are other voices to be heard and WILL be heard. This brutal system of killing and profiting over the bones of dead animals needs to change.

Rita you are the best!! You been with me for much of this past year and I thank you for your support and passion for wolves. We are not going to let the haters have their way with wolves. We may be out funded and don’t have the political clout that the antis do but we have something more, our love for wolves, a keystone species that has a right to be here and live in peace. This blog is dedicated to supporting them and speaking out for them. One day it won’t be “haters rule”. It will be people like us that value animal life just as we do human life.

Dear, dear Nabeki congratulations on the first anniversary of blogging for Wolves!! I didn’t discover Howling for Justice until a few months ago, but it is the first thing I check each morning to see what battle lies ahead for us in protecting the Magnificent Wolf that we all love. It had to be as you said an incredibly dark and lonely time for you, and so your courage and your tenacity is all the more to be admired.
Between Howling for Justice and Wolf Warriors with you and Jerry Black I now feel that we are making progress, and that more and more people are realizing it’s not the Wolves – it’s the ranchers and hunters that are decimating the elk herds and destroying PUBLIC lands.

I think this year will be a good one for wolf adovcates because no matter what the antis are scheming to do, we are on to them. They WILL NOT be allowed to meddle with the ESA for their selfish reasons. The only reason wolves made their comeback is because of the ESA. That’s a battle we can’t lose. Oh no they are at it again in Idaho with wolf disaster edicts. They tried this before and even Otter wouldn’t go along with it. I think these people have forgotten wolves are a federally protected species. More nutty stuff coming out of Idaho although Montana is being just as unreasonable in their relentless quest to have wolf hunts.
Resolution seeks ‘emergency’ reduction in wolves in the state
at 2:44 p.m. on February 15, 2010
Idaho Legislature Lawmakers would declare an emergency and urge the governor to do the same and order the state’s wolf population reduced, under a concurrent resolution introduced today in the House Resources Committee at the urging of Rep. Dick Harwood, R-St. Maries. “This bill is about legislators being able to show their support, should the governor so wish to have an executive order to have wolves removed,” Harwood told the committee. Rep. George Sayler, D-Coeur d’Alene disagreed, and said the resolution appears to move Idaho toward a position like that of Wyoming, which hasn’t been given authority to manage its wolf population because of its refusal to enact acceptable wolf management plans.
“I think we all know how big this issue has been in our state the last 10 or 12 years, and the struggle we went through as a state to get to the position to where we can manage wolves,” Sayler said. “To me, this is a move back toward a Wyoming position. … This is a step back to more court cases.” Sayler moved to kill the bill, but was outvoted along party lines, with only the panel’s Democrats voting in support. The committee then voted, again along party lines, to introduce a corrected version of the resolution. Among the last-minute changes: The resolution now says that it encourages the governor to declare a state of emergency and require the Idaho Department of Fish and Game to use “any legal means” to reduce wolf numbers, instead of just “use any means.”
The committee also voted to introduce a measure from Rep. Phil Hart, R-Athol, to make “human consumptive use” of certain game species a top priority for Fish & Game’s management of wildlife, even though Hart, tied up in another committee, didn’t show up to present the bill. Rep. Dell Raybould questioned whether a precedent was being set that the way to get a bill introduced was to not show up. Chairman Bert Stevenson said he was concerned about that, but since the committee wanted to proceed and today is the last day for bill introductions, he allowed it.

Have you or anyone else on here watched the video interview with idaho fish and game’s cal groen and jon rachael? Cal groen is one pathetic and ignorant and arrogant sob! Has anyone heard about that wolf Romeo in Alaska I believe it was? He was another special wolf believed to be killed by hunters, what a shocker. Romeo was different from most wolves and even played with people’s dogs. He was a big black wolf. rip Romeo and limpy too.

Jon….I did read about Romeo, he was a wonderful wolf. It was so rare that he would interact with dogs the way he did but he was a very lonely wolf without a pack.
Why do these people feel the need to destroy something beautiful? It baffles me every day.

Nabeki and all Wolf Advocates, I am taking the liberty of posting this here because as Nabeki pointed out even though this is a wolf blog, the blatant disregard for the lives of animals that we share our planet with is sometimes so inhumane and downright evil it must be stopped. I am talking about the round ups of the wild mustangs and the BLM continuing to do so despite public out cry. Today, the BLM have agreed to all wild mustangs going to a sanctuary (including the ones currently in fed holding pens). Once more and more people found out what was going on it created a momentum that was unstoppable. I know that is also where we are with saving our wolves.

This is a great victory for mustangs held in holding pens, the terror and sadness they must feel being rounded up off their range is heartbreaking. I just read the BLM sent 173 wild horses to slaughter, they stated they were feral horses and not wild horses but there is no way to tell by looknig at them.
I wish we could get the kind of support for wolves that M. Pickens was able to achieve with her campaign. It shows you the power of the people when they rally for a cause.
One thing that concerns me is I think Madeleine stated the mustangs going to her eco-sanctuary would be sterilized. If all the wild horses were put in a sanctuary they wouldn’t be breeding and we’d lose our mustangs. I agree with the horses in holding pens going to her sanctuary but the BLM needs to leave the tiny population of wild horses that are still on the range alone. They want them the horses off their so they can develop oil and gas leases and have more room for cows. There are over one hundred million cattle in this country and only 20,000 or less mustangs left in the wild. Do you have anymore details about the plan? I’m happy for the horses that have been rounded up but worried about taking all our horses off their range that was promised to them by Congress.

Hi Nabeki, I understood that sterilizing the horses in the sanctuary was not an option; that was one of the “ideas” the BLM put forward, and I certainly do not and would not agree to that. I don’t have any further details at the moment but will share them once they are made available. As I understood the it there are thousands of acres and the reason for the fence surrounding where the horses will be is to keep the BLM from them having to “protect” the wild horses. I hope to have much more information soon.

Though there may be 10 (or so) hours between us, its good to keep up to date. Howling for Justice is a nice reprieve from some of the other forums out there that are more like war zones. Also your prudent moderation means pro-wolf types don’t have to wade through tons of spammed anti-wolf, pro-sport-hunting butchery of the English language. For this, as a hobby writer, I thank you.

It’s so true…does wolf hating go along with poor spelling? I let a few of the comments through just to remind us who we are up against but I wanted to create a site where wolf advocates could come and not be harassed, spending endless hours arguing about how wolves kill their prey. Or my favorite, wolves “kill for sport”. That’s coming from the people that “kill for sport”. Of course wolves don’t kill for sport but I just find it incredibly hypocritical when the trophy hunting crowd says it.

The one thing about writing (and spelling) is that you must first know how to read, and then you must read [good quality books] often in order to keep a satisfactory command of English. Hunting magazines do not count hehe.
But let’s not paint people with the same brush, for the educated sport hunters that can indeed read and write well: “a bogan with a law degree is still a bogan”.

What a bunch of whining, crying babies. That’s what we were told in fairy tales. AND they are fairy tales. Any wolf worth their salt wants to be at least a hundred miles away from any human. They selected out all the friendly wolves a long time ago, those guys were the first to go. Now the wary, non-human trusting wolves remain…and good for them.
There’s more of a chance their kids will be abducted by aliens at the bus stop then wolves.

This congress is a lame duck, so any legislation they introduce that doesn’t move out of committee, will die on December 31,2010. The new congress will be the real threat. Are either of these two dofuses up for re-election in November?

This guy Brandt is probably a 4th or 5th generation predator hater- he seems like an equal opportunity hater though, he probably hates eagles, prairie dogs, ravens, black footed ferretts– kill all the varmints!!! I was interesting Fri when three of four bloggers had the stooge Mark Gamblin in a position to ask where exactly these phantom wolves are in the Lolo that are “decamatin” the elk herds. Several people including Ralph gave factual reports about the declines of this herd well before wolves where ever reintroduced into the Lolo, but it dudn’t matter- excuse the spellin! It’s hard for me to act and spell like an ignorant hillbilly redneck! People can review the facinating exchanges on the “Wolf Management” entry from Fri. I don’t quite get these conservatives when thet keep repeating bogus information over and over again

William…..AND the winter of 96/97 is only ever briefly mentioned. It was so severe there was no place to put the snow, people’s roofs were collapsing. The white tail deer were wiped out in Montana and I’m sure the same for elk in Idaho. It was a deadly winter. Personally I am so sick of hearing about elk, even though I think they are beautiful. Wolf advocates can’t open their mouths and say wolf before the haters start whining about elk and cows. They need new material. The child danger, tape-worm infested, ginormous, canadian, elk decimating, cow eating wolf babbling talking points aren’t working.

The wolf haters act as if the wolves caused the lolo elk decline. There are other factors at play here. The wolves were not responsible for the elk decline in the lolo. The lolo elk were in trouble before wolves were brought back as I am sure most on here know and are aware of. Don’t be shocked when wolves are being blamed for everything by the wolf haters.

This guy like a good deal of hunters, blames predators, in this case coyotes for low deer #s. He refers to coyotes as fleabags. I thought coyotes are widllife and this guy is calling them fleabags just because they eat deer and blames them specifically for the low deer #s in Maine. This just proves yet again hunters do not care about all wildlife, only the animals they kill either for food. He goes on to say that hunters went hungry this past year because the coyotes supposedly in his opinion wiped out all of the deer. I am sick to death of these hunters blaming predators every time there may be low deer or elk #s. I also find it laughable that he says that a few thousands hunters went hungry. Hunters do not go hungry if they don’t get their deer or elk. They don’t need these animals to survive and they know it. I am certain that not one hunter in Maine went hungry or was starving to death just because he couldn’t get a deer.

Jon… totally agree, this guy is full of it. Hunters are not going hungry in Maine, it’s expensive to hunt. One of the most expensive “sports”. They could save some of that money and go to the store. If they don’t want to eat the horrible factory farm meat they can check out the organic farmers. OR better yet become a vegetarian and give the animals a break.
One thing I do have to say is I love Maine for it tremendous beauty but unfortunately it loaded with the same hunters that we have in the Northern Rockies.
I remember once visting friends near the Canadian border in Maine, a big bull moose stepped onto the road and we sat for 1/2 hour until he moved. And I mean he was BIG!!

Nabeki, hunters are more or less the same everywhere. Anytime there are low deer or elk #s or whatever in some state, you can bet hunters will be blaming the predators for it.
I found a real good website on coyotes. Some hunters even use dogs to kill coyotes. It’s sickening and places like Maine have coyote killing contests and the hunter who kills the most coyotes wins money and prizes. This is 2010 and it’s disgusting to see tournaments like this going on. Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture? Coyotes are wildlife and they are being treated as vermin.

Remington is a psychotic. They have very backward wildlife policies in Maine. We New Englanders like to joke about Mainers- we don’t need to go to Texas to get hillbilly rednecks, we just need to go to Maine! They are the closest to a uneducated hillbilly redneck that we have- but as caribou Barbi- the common sense constitutional conservative would say- “Bless their heart” that is if they had one! I believe that most hunters are pathological about killing. The reason they hate predators is because they know the average coyote is alot smarter than the average hunter. Why do you think the hick farmers would put the coyotes over the fenceposts- to teach the other coyotes a lesson- how stupid are these people! Coyotes kill because they are wired that way- hunters resent that! I have the best book on coyotes ever written Voice of the coyote written in 1950 by a man named Dobie- I highly recommend it!

Ofcourse they are William. I really wonder why on earth anyone would want to kill a coyote for sport. I’ve seen hundreds od videos on youtube of hunters killing coyotes and there is no point to it. You kill a coyote with a high powerered rifle. I mean seriously, there is nothing hard about it. Anyone can do it. It takes no skills at all. It isn’t normal behavior to want to kill animals for sport. That killing coyotes to control their population is nonsense. Hunters, if they have any smarts at all know you can’t control the coyote population. That is a lame excuse to justify pleasure killing. All those coyotes have a role to play in the ecosystem. Hunters are one of the worst things to ever happen to ecosystems.

Thank You,William.I would indeed like to get that book by Dobie on coyotes.I saw some for sale on Amazon.I can still see the coyotes hanging on the fences from pictures that saw when young and I still have nightmares.

At least we know from history that as Redneck Elmer the hunter passes on into the next life the coyote will still be here. That is a fact! I have a family of them living in my neighborhood!!!

I love your enthusiasm!! 🙂 Just one thing, Howling for Justice is five years old, it was started in September 2009, just after the Spring Northern Rockies wolf delisting by the Obama administration. The first organized wolf hunts were being held in Montana and Idaho, just months after the wolves delisting. I was outraged by this, having been a staunch wolf and animal rights activist for many years.
