Our message should ring loud and clear. No meddling with the ESA. No tampering with the ESA. Remind your Senators and Representatives you will never vote for anyone that has a hand in ruining one of the most important pieces of environmental legislation ever drafted. Our wildlife is a precious resource, it’s not there to be manipulated for hunters, outfitters, ranchers or any other special interest groups. Remind them there are 72 million wildlife watchers and just 12 million hunters. WE ARE THE MAJORITY!
Talking points:
1. Wolf depredation on livestock is a red herring.
Wolves were responsible for just 97 cattle losses in Montana in 2009 out of 2.6 million cattle. The main cause of cow deaths are disease, weather, theft and reproductive issues. Coyotes are the primary cattle predator but all predation is low compared to non-predation. Most ranchers in the Northern Rockies do not practice sound animal husbandry practices and rely on Wildlife Services to kill predators for them.
2. Wolves need the protection of the ESA.
Could it be any plainer, when so many special interest groups are clamoring for wolves’ blood? Their hysterical claims are not backed by science but myth and innuendo. Wolves are the ultimate scapegoats.
3. Wolves are apex predators vital to our ecosystem.
They influence forest health by decreasing ungulate browsing pressure. Wolf kills provide food for many other species. Wolves are the best friend of pronghorn antelope fawns, because wolves control the coyote population, who feed on the fawns. Wolves keep ungulate herds healthy by culling the weak, sick and old.
4. Wolves were exterminated in the West once before.
The very people who want to strip gray wolves of their ESA protections are mimicking the attitudes that existed one hundred years ago. Wolves could be exterminated once again if they are not protected under the ESA.
Wolves are a natural part of our ecosystem, not varmints to be shot for blood sport.
5. Wolves are not killing all the elk in the Northern Rockies.
The elk population in Montana stands at 150,000, Idaho 101,000 and Wyoming 120,000 That’s 371,000 elk in the tri-state region. More than enough elk, probably too many elk, since fish and game agencies favor high ungulate numbers to please their customers, the hunters. Wolves, bears, mountain lions and other predators are considered a nuisance and their numbers are controlled. I hate to break it to hunters but elk and deer do not belong to you.
Wolves hunt to survive, they must hunt or they will die. Wolves have a very poor hunting success ratio, just one in ten hunts is successful.
6. Wolves are the least dangerous of all large North American carnivores.
They are shy and will stay as far away from people as they can. Deer kill many more people in car accidents every year, in this country, than wolves have in a century.
7. The assault on wolves is politically driven, not based on science.
Since the Obama administration delisted wolves in the Spring of 2009, the anti-wolf forces have banded together to demonize wolves by spreading myth and rumor.

This case was brought for both NEPA AND ESA violations.
It would be prudent to believe that the term ‘agencies’ must apply to ALL agencies within the government who use ‘science’ to make important and life-altering changes where the tax-paying Public and their resources are concerned.
Perhaps our officials should be made aware – there is a LEGALLY MANDATED system of checks and balances that put the interests of ALL stakeholders above the interests of a priveleged few.

[Perhaps this incident near Tensed,Idaho, sounds like a dangerous situation, but the story absolutely distorts truth.
Wolves are not a threat to people. If you do some research on black bears, mountain lions and grizzly bears, you will clearly see that these large predators that have always lived among people in the Northern Rockies and many other parts of the country, and are recorded to annually stalk, maul, attack, and sometimes kill people – but no one seems to worry about this fact or that 2500+ mountain lions and an estimated 20,000 black bears inhabit Idaho. As you know, there are also a few grizzlies in parts of Idaho.
Wolves do not have a track record of attacking people, although two recent situations, one in Canada and one in Alaska (where an estimated 65,000 wolves have lived in proximity to people without ever having been exterminated, unlike the Western U.S.) have been reported. Neither of these wolf attack cases was clear cut, as I have followed them closely. The one in Alaska most likely was wolves.
No wolf biologist I know has EVER had a close, threatening experience with a wild wolf, myself included. I have purposely camped (in my tent) as close as I can get to wolf packs. I have crawled in their dens with their pups. I have snuck up on packs of wolves in their rendezvous sites (where pups and adults spend their summers) with radio telemetry and I have used predator calls to entice them as close as I could to try and dart them. My dozens of counterparts have done the same. I have spent all that time (nearly 30 years) on a full-time basis trying to get close to wolves or get them close to me. I have NEVER had a wolf make any attempt (even once) to attack me, or threaten me in any way. Sure, they bark and howl, and sometimes stand around and look at me, but that’s not the same thing. Unlike all of these people who are suddenly professing near-death experiences with wolves, I actually have a very public track record of experience with these animals, and I am telling you flat-out that wolves aren’t just uninterested in people, they routinely turn-tail and run when they know humans are around.
I can understand that some people may be fearful of wolves and that wolves are capable of hurting someone. But they don’t. Wolves standing around or approaching people is not a behavior that should be encouraged because habituated wolves that are allowed to come close to people or are fed by humans can become troublesome and sometimes dangerous. Wolves standing around or approaching people isn’t unusual and can easily be frightened away. I know hundreds of people who are dying for the chance to have a wolf stand nearby so they can watch or film them. I get phone calls all the time from people asking me where they can go see wolves in Idaho. It is a very cool experience but the usual reaction of wolves is to get nervous and walk or run away eventually.
With all due respect, people need to learn about wolves, wolf behavior and look at their track record. I get frustrated that the news media waste so much time trying to turn wolves into villains. I guess that people still need more time to get used to these animals. People read more into these close encounters or wolf events than what is really happening.
So I apologize if I offended you and respect the need of people to be careful around ALL wild animals. Don’t forget, deer and elk can be dangerous too.

Nabeki, the wolf haters are using these isolated incidents as a reason to want to eradicate the wolf all over again. Just because some woman saw wolves in her driveway, does not mean the wolves were there to kill her. When you live in a state like Idaho that has amazing wildlife, every now and then wildlife will venture close to where you live. The wolves saw this woman and took off. Wolves have not killed one single person since being reintroduced 15 years ago. I can’t say it will never happen, but there are by far much greater dangers in Idaho than wolves. You have many more bears and lions in Idaho than wolves and both of these animals have attacked and killed many more people than wolves in recent times. Not trying to make bears and cougars look like the bad guy because they aren’t, just stating the truth. I saw someone write on another blog this, if wolves are so dangerous, why haven’t they attacked or killed anyone in the last 15 years since being reintroduced? they had plenty of chances I am sure, but not one human fatality. Clearly these wolf haters are overexaggerating and they know it. They hate wolves simply because they are back and they are making hunting a lot harder for hunters. It’s that simple.

I know Jon, the haters are masters of exaggerating. The problem started with the delisting and when Judge Molloy allowed the hunts to go forward the anti-wolfers started feeling a sense of entitlement about being able to kill wolves, who hadn’t been hunted in this country since they were wiped out in the West. You can see by the huge sale of wolf tags how much blood lust there was.
The problem is the haters get all the play in the media plus fish and game seem to have a major connection to the news media and they print pretty much whatever BS those agencies feed them. They usually have one blurb in each article from an environmentalist and then they run with the party line.
I think the tide is turning and that’s why they are pushing so hard to change the law and strip the ESA because they are not winning in the courts. I was shocked beyond belief when the article came out saying the Obama admin is committed to legislatively delisting not only wolves but grizzlies. They just pissed off another whole group of people. The Yellowstone grizzlies were just relisted by Judge Molloy. So we have a battle ahead of us that’s not going to stop once this Congress retires. The new Congress will be worse but if this sleeping giant of wildlife advocates wakes up we can win this. I always think of what Margaret Mead said:

I am absolutely disgusted and upset about this. They are going to allow canned hunting in South Africa to resume. This means that thousands and thousands of tame lions will be shot to death by cowardly hunters and their high powered rifles. Absolutely disgusting that amazing animals like lions are treated like this. Where is the respect for wild animals?

It’s only a matter of time before this practice is abolished once and for all. These breeders only care about the American dollar and continue to give the country of South Africa a horrible image. Most research shows that the justification that it takes pressure off wild populations of lions is false. Trophy hunters always want a wild lion as to not be associated with canned hunting. South africa is a corrupt country. Environmental groups need to organize a tourism boycott.

William, to me, canned hunting and regular trophy hunting are no different. One lion stands no chance against a trophy hunter and his entourage of safari guides armed with guns.Do you think they are going to play fair and let a lion attack the trophy hunter if it gets a chance? No, they are going to shoot it dead. These hunts are not fair in the least. The lion is the one that always loses out. Most of the time, lions are taken minding their own business, laying down and it’s disgusting what these people do. They people have no regard for wildlife. You can’t love nature with a gun.

No I don’t mind Jon, I care deeply about other animals as well. My focus of course will always be on wolves because I love and care about these animals but also because they are in such distress and so persecuted. But canned hunts are the most disgusting thing these cretins have invented. Apparently their supply of Viagra must have run out.

Frankly,there isn’t words right now to express how I hate and canned hunting and the people that promote and practice it.The dogs could be used for more valueable work than chasing cougars and other animals..These people use real life animals to play their real life video games at the cost of lives of the animals,futhermore,being well aware of the suffering they cause, as the young watch as their parents are being mauled or shot; only to become orphans and die themseselves.These people do not value life either man or animal.It is all about me and what I get from it.I am going to go and spend some time with my dog,Sally,right now,in order to calm down.

So well said Rita, I can barely stand to look at those videos, they are so vile. Here is an animal that was doing nothing but minding it’s own business and these people just stand and shoot them for no reason. The male lion in the first video raised his paw after he had been shot about four times as he lay dying. I’m pretty sure I saw that and I burst into tears. The mountain lion was so scared.
I despise these people. They should be moved to another planet and alll live together in their trophy hunting world.

I’m going to do a piece on this Jerry. Thank you for the link. This is a classic case of shoot the messenger. Where are we living? In North Korea? I thought we had freedom of speech here? FWP obviously didn’t want people to know they would be killing off fifty percent of the wolf population with their hunt. They said it was flawed because Creel didn’t count the puppies but he did include them in his model. The point is, how many puppies are wolves going to have if over fifty percent of the wolves would die each year, leaving fewer wolves to breed and have any puppies? Clearly Montana FWP doesn’t like his study which shows the brutality of the hunt. They are threatening to take their toys and go home if he keeps it up. Also nobody is mentioning the terrible toll Wildlife Services takes in their shadow wolf hunts each year in Montana. The wolves do not have a chance if the states take over their “management”. They will be mere ghosts on the landscape if they survive at all. That’s why I can’t understand why anyone thinks that Montana’s wolf plan is sound or reasonable? It boogles the mind.

We too are disgusted with the out come of the trial. Lions now have no protection what so ever, and you can go and do absolutely anything u want to them.
Thank you for your offer of help. Unfortunately money and greed are the driving force as we have seen in recent times with the Rhino poachers who were affluent members of the community.
If you go to our website http://www.cannedlion.org you will see that we have been campaigning for 10 years to try and get canned hunting banned. Chris has been giving audio-visual presentations all around SA, in Kenya and around the UK. (Kenya by the way banned hunting 30 years ago as a relic of the colonial era) Much time has been spent raising awareness both here and overseas, and we liaise closely with numerous animal welfare groups overseas. Chris even filed an affidavit on behalf of the Minister when he was sued by the SA Predator Breeders Association. But it is not enough, we really need to get this out into the faces of the SA public, because without a really big demand from S. Africans, government will continue with business as usual. What we want to do is to place an advertisement into the Sunday Times newspaper every week if possible, (or at least every month, month after month) with photos of what is happening so that S.Africans can see how we treat our wildlife, especially our beautiful lions. CACH does not have the funds to do this, as to place a large advert in the newspapers is expensive.(advert needs to be large and impressive) We need (financially) someone to sponsor the advert campaign.

The advert will be something like this. Pictures of beautiful animals (different ones every advert) destroyed by hunters. The text will support these pictures explaining what canned hunting is and how the public can make a difference. Would there be any one that you could approach on our behalf for something like this?
We have tried presentations to different groups and companies over the years, these have no affect accept to that small arena, we need to get the horrors out there into the face of everyone.
We are also trying to put a syndicate together whereby we can buy some land to establish a wildlife sanctuary and rehab centre. We have been trying to sell our house in Wilderness for 2 years now so that we can go ahead with the establishment of the centre. Unfortunately because of the down turn our house remains unsold.
Below is a letter which we have sent off to friends and family in the hope of raising funds for the centre, and when the house sells that will go into developing it further for animals in need, like the lions, baboons etc etc.
If you know of anyone that can help with either idea we would be grateful if you could pass on our letter.

At the recent wildlife rehabbers workshop in Cape Town we were fortunate enough to spend some time walking with an habituated baboon troop on Table Mountain and we could see for ourselves the scars they all carry from their daily conflict with our species. Eyes and legs missing, scars from shooting, beating and being mauled by dogs.
There is a critical need for a baboon rehab centre in the Western Cape. There is a steady flow of orphaned and injured animals and the only existing rehab centre cannot cope. Recently, for lack of a release site, 19 baboons were shot in their cages at that centre, which is now declining to take in any new casualties.
We would like to establish a rehab centre and to situate it in a remote area adjoining the Baviaanskloof Mega Cluster where suitable wilderness habitat exists for releasing rehabbed troops, and other wildlife right up to leopard.
We need to find SAR3 million (+/- $450,000) in order to acquire property and establish the facilities. We ourselves can provide R750,000 (until our house sells) and are looking to investors or donors to provide the balance. Full details including maps and photos are available to any interested parties.
Two options arise:
Firstly a straight donation, no amount is too small, we are a registered charity with tax exemption – or
Second we are putting together a syndicate, where each shareholder puts in SA Rands 500,000 (about US$72,000) for a one-sixth share of the property. They then use the property as a holiday farm for their family and friends. NO HUNTING ALLOWED. At any time they can get out and sell their share, or remain an owner indefinitely, with their share passing to their heirs. ( There are local agents who specialise in fractional ownership, which is becoming more popular these days. They would have to offer it first to existing shareholders at the market price). All co-owners would then enjoy the benefits of the capital gains if and when they sell, and meanwhile they would have un-restricted use of the holiday farm and facilities.
On the Syndicate’s website would be a calendar, where owners could book the times they wished to use the accommodation for that year.
We would be on the property full time so that there would always be responsible persons in situ.
We are asking people to invest in a valuable property which will provide an excellent hedge against inflation.
Please won’t you forward this offer to anyone you think might be interested in a sound investment with a huge animal welfare benefit.

BILLINGS, Mont. — Negotiations to remove Northern Rockies gray wolves from the endangered species list hit an impasse Monday, after Wyoming and Idaho refused to go along with an Interior Department proposal on the issue, Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer said.
Schweitzer said the breakdown in talks between the three states and the Obama administration makes it unlikely Congress will address the issue this year.

I saw Jon…but I wouldn’t trust anything they say. I still encourage everyone to call Congress and the President to express outrage over the wheeling and dealing to strip gray wolves of their ESA protections.

I am against canned hunting of any animal. That is not a sport it is like shooting fish in a barrel. People who practice these things and those who allow it are out for two things. The first group is to impress their rich friends and say hey look I bagged a lion, or wolf, or a Grizzly. The second group is making this activity available for the sole purpous of making money. It sickens that we have come to this. That the creatures God put in our care are being so horribly slaughtered just because we can. Stop this madness now.

Just watched a show last night Maggie about big cats. They are saying lions could be extinct by 2022. Leopards aren’t doing any better. The wild lion population has gone from 450,000 to 20,000 since the fifties. We’ve talking about tigers, who are the worst off but all the big cats are in trouble.
Canned hunts are disgusting and so wrong on so many levels. Everything you said is right on target.
