The Anti-Wolf Baucus/Tester Bill Is Looming…..

According to The Wildlife News the Baucus/Tester anti-wolf bill could be voted on tonight.  This is the worst news possible and under a Democrat administration?

God help the wolves. This is like a wave sweeping over them. I’m speechless. How did this happen so quickly?

Could someone explain what is going on, I thought a bill had to be voted on in both houses of Congress to become law? But then I remembered the Burns Amendment.

The Tester/Baucus wolf bill is revealed.

  3. I haven’t been able to find out anything else yet but this is the first time I’ve seen any actual legislation that might have any connection to the talks between Salazar the Spineless and the Governors.

The antis don’t like anything other than complete removal of protection as with the Orin Hatch bill. They have been sending out alerts and posting them to blogs.

It looks like what’s his name who shot the first wolf in the Idaho hunt posted this: http://www.fieldandstream.com/answers/other/urgent-hunters-out-west-need-your-help-today-bill-was-presented-last-night-and-may-be-

    • Thanks Ken…this is so freaking nerve wracking. The endliess, relentless call by the haters to strip wolves of their protections is wearing on me. Just reading that paragraph gives me chills. We are in the fight of our lives.

ooops i posted a message to you on Ralphs site. Grihalvas office is looking out for this tester baucus bill. The CR to fund the governmnet has not been passed in either body. If someone tries to add this leg it will have to go back to the house which should protect wolves everyone should call Sen REID and remind him that people hate this shit

    • Nabeki, Marc, William and all. I finally got through to a very nice young woman in Boxer’s LA office. She confirmed what William said Grijalva’s office confirmed; that if someone does try and add/change, it will have to go back to the House. And that is an excellent idea about calling Harry Reid’s office. This young woman also confirmed what I already knew: there is no way Senator Boxer would support this bill to remove wolves from ESA protection. She is a big wildlife and environmental advocate. And as Marc pointed out she is the Senate Majority Chairman, which helps. Will now see if I can through to Feinsteins’s office/s.

      • Thanks so much SCWG…good to know. We should be calling Kerry and Schumer in the Senate as well I think.

Now we have to really look out for that other horrible Senate bill 3919.

      • I know William but apparently Peay other wolf haters formed a coaltion several months ago with Salazar, they sit on some committee or group together…I have to search for it…so apparently he has a direct line to Salazar the Rancher.

    • Thanks William…I will be calling all day today…but wasn’t Reid in on that deal with Don Peay about six weeks ago when they were playing dirty tricks? They were trying to add the Chet Edwards anti-wolf bill to a CR and supposedly the way the rules are written in the Senate the House would have to accept it without a vote. Not sure how that works but that’s what I’m afraid they are attempting again now in the Senate.

From the hunting site Black Bear Blog:

Sens. Baucus And Tester Accused Of Derailing Wolf Bill
      September 30, 2010

Yesterday in brief email exchanges between interested and involved parties for efforts to gain control of the gray wolf from the Federal Government and Don Peay, founder of Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife, it was noted that Montana Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester derailed an effort in the House and Senate to pass a bill that would have amended the Endangered Species Act to exempt gray wolves from consideration of that Act.

What follows is a copy of a longer explanation of what transpired, according to Don Peay. After the email copy, you’ll find photos in two parts of the letter to Sen. Reid from Wyoming Gov. Freudenthal as referenced in the email. Click each photo to enlarge it for reading.

      “Toby,

I gave the SHORT version to a very complicated issue.

Don Peay, Miles Moretti, Clint Bentley and Ted Lyon meet[sic] with Leader Reid last week about getting this wolf issue resolved, NOW. With all the things going on in Washington, I am very appreciative of leader Reid’s efforts on this issue for the West. He told us he wanted to get something done. Leader Reid did NOT make a time commitment.

Had the Senate wanted, they could have passed Chet Edwards[sic] bill on the Continuing Resolution (CR) Bill. If the CR bill is not passed, the Government would shut down on Sept. 30 at midnight.
Chet Edwards bill had been Carefully researched by a very successful Texas trial attorney and strong democrat who has met privately with Governor Schweitzer on this issue.

I don’t like to speak for others, but several prominent sportsmen had MAJOR discussions with Senators Baucus and Tester for WEEKS, about getting behind the Edwards bill.

Had the Senate passed it, due to Rules, the House had no choice but to accept the CR as written, no conference, no back and forth, etc. It would have been done.

Tuesday morning, the Republican Senators from Idaho, Arizona, Wyoming, and Utah were saying “we can’t put the Edwards Bill on the CR, we voted in our party and made the commitment to minority leader McConnell that we would vote for NO attachments to the CR.”

Of course, I went ballistic with some staffers and asked does anyone in Washington want to get things done, or do we just do protocol ?

Under the leadership of Sen. Hatch, Risch, Crapo, and Barrosso[sic], these statesman[sic] also got Sen. Enzie of Wyoming and Sens. Kyle and McCain of AZ to say, “we will vote to put the Edwards bill on the CR and solve this problem” These 7 Senators wanted to solve this issue for America.

I will forward you a letter from Wyoming Governor Dave Frudenthal[sic], who had also talked with Leader Reid’s office asking, then in writing to pass the Edwards bill.

A 45 minute meeting was held in Leader Reid’s office at 4 pm. Eastern time yesterday. Baucus and Tester fought it tooth and nail, and essentially killed it. I was then invited in the Room by Leader Reid, and he explained the time constraints. Sen. Baucus then started giving this lame duck reason why the Edwards bill would not be fair to the people of all the other states, to which is said, “With all due respect Senator, pass the Edwards bill, NOW, and people in EACH STATE can manage wolves how they want.” If you really want Montana and all other states to have a say, it is simple, pass the Edwards Bill. He then told me how I was wrong, but he is wrong.

So, Toby, there was no official vote. But clearly, had Senators Tester and Bacchus[sic] wanted to get this done, it would have been done. We had private meetings with democratic Senators Pryor of Arkansas, Nelson of Nebraska, and Bill Kiefer had flown in From North Dakota, and a meeting with Senator Dorgan.

This now is just typical Washington DC smoke and mirror politics, shell games, hide the ball.

Toby, it is time to smoke them out.

In my opinion, had Baucus and Tester gotten behind the Edwards bill, and worked to get it on the Senate CR, Thursday night, wolves would have been off the ESA.

I wrote the email about two votes, because I just spent 20 hours a day in Washington, for 7 days, fighting through all the smoke screens, double talk, BS and I gave it to you straight.

Now, we get to waste millions of more dollars fighting fights in the PR game, in court, and our big game herds continue to get destroyed.

      Don Peay,
      SFW”

      • I just got off the phone with Senator Kerry’s aide. She said that there is so much going on right now with the tax issue, unemployment benefits, etc…she doesn’t think any of the anti-wolf bills will come up for a vote. But I’m still worried about the dirty tricks, like the stunt Conrad Burns pulled in 2005 against our wild horses, so we are not out of the woods yet and the sad thing it’s going to be much worse when the new Congress is sworn in. Tried to call Chuck Schumer about three times but his phone either dsconnects you right away or you sit on hold for ten minutes and then it disconnects.

  7. I just got off the phone with Reid’s office in DC. I’m and Executive Assistant to a CEO and I can spot someone who isn’t listening and doesn’t care. This young man was one of them. I am afraid it is a Nabeki passed along from Senator Kerry’s office; there is so much going on now in D.C. and that is precisely what worries me. The bastards know that and will use it against wolves, and try and shove this trough. I just don’t like the feeling I have. Have been unable to make contact with anyone in Feinstein’s office but will keep trying.

    • Sorry you got that response SCWG..its seems wolves are down on the list of importance and that’s exactly when these haters will strike, when they think nobody is paying attention. There is a way to get something through the Senate without having a house vote. If they attach it to an appropriations bill like C. Burns did. The only thing we can do is keep fighting and calling. Every wolf hating legislator is introducing their own wolf delisting bill, I’ve lost count of them all. Doesn’t mean they have the support for it, it makes for good press and pr when they’re preaching to their base. I can’t tell you how disappointed I am in the Obama admin. Who thought we’d be fighting this battle over wolves with a Democrat in the White House. Just stunning. Those pro-wolf Senators better be on their toes until the session ends.

Another thing I’m hearing that’s disturbing is people are starting to talk about whether or not we should accept the Tester/Baucus compromise. Like it’s a done deal that a legislative fix will happen. What kind of advocates are that? You fight until the threat is over not fold at the first sign of trouble. The pro-wolf movement needs to stick together the way the hunters do.

      • Nabeki, I hate to say this but President Obama I think has started a very bad precedent: just take the deal you don’t want because well, after all, it’s the best you will get. Give up without a fight. This is all the more tragic because this man promised such hope, such change for this country. Well, the change that has happened breeds nothing but apathy. There are so many of us, I have to keep thinking if we keep our voices loud and clear, we will prevail. We have to. I cannot even think about living in a world where virtually all of our wildlife will be wiped out: wolves, grizzlies, big cats, bison. The world of the Native American which we destroyed. Almost. I am heartened by all the Wolf advocates that have come together in the Coalition that you, Marc and Katie started. It’s truly amazing.

I will check back later. I am off to my riding lesson, which always brings me back to my center and I feel stronger after being on the back of a beautiful Arabian mare. HOWLS

      • SCWG….I am so disappointed in Obama, he has been a disaster. I personally don’t think he has a clue about wildlife or western lands. He’s turned everything over to his rancher buddy. I never in a million years thought we would be fighitng this battle with a Democrat in office. Never. I hope to god we won’t have a Palin/Obama ticket in 2012. That would be a nightmare.

Glad you’re taking lessons. Horses are wonderful and riding is very theraputic. Good luck with it!
