The Wolf Is Freedom

They move like shadows

Their soulful howls fill the night

The moon is their guide

Many want to kill them for just breathing air

Most that hate them have no reason why

They are wolf, an old clan

They belong to god not man

They are not ours to “harvest”

They are free spirits, playing, loving, hunting, sensing, mating, rearing their young

Put down your guns and arrows

Let them pass through this world unharmed

Don’t you know where the wolf roams the land is truly wild and free?

That’s their gift to you. Freedom.

Breathe it, smell it, accept it. You will be the better for it.

Stop the hate and embrace their mournful souls

The wolf is teacher, listen and learn.

    • Hi Loua,
I feel compelled sometimes to write a wolf poem. It’s a way to express my feelings about what is happening to them. I wish the nightmare would be over too. It’s been a long year and a half.

  6. Nabeki, I finally received my Return to Innocence by Enigma which you shared with us about a month ago, and at the same time my copy of Romeo by John Hyde. I think this sums up the wolf haters/poachers from page 116 of the book: ” the individual who shot Romeo said in his testimony that he did so not because his objective was to kill a wolf, but because (to use his own words) “it was instinctive,” inferring that he had no control over his actions and did not think for even a second what the consequences might be when he pulled the trigger. Would you want to cross paths with someone like that, armed, and out walking on your favorite trail?

The difference between humans and other species is that we are supposed to be able to regulate our actions, based on thought and consideration for their results. For a human to react without consideration is less honorable that any action an animals, even a predator, commits to survive”.

I would say that is a vast understatement. Romeo, and any other wolf is far, far superior to this cowardly individual with gun and no conscious.

    • The guy that killed Romeo was a known poacher. I don’t think poaching is an instinctive reflex. THESE idiots know what they are doing and just don’t care about anything or anyone but themselves. Give me a break

      • I think maybe what Hyde was trying to say William is that unfortunately, killing has become second nature to people like this person who so casually took the life of an innocent animal, and therein lies the real tragedy, they are able and do react with no thought of anything other than their own pleasure and feelings of power. My point in quoting this was to emphasize that Romeo and all wolves are far, far superior to this piece of S__t.

Have you heard from Grajavila’s office regarding the upcoming possible vote? You said earlier she was to get back with you.

    • I’m glad you received Return to Innocence, just love it so much. And sweet, sweet Romeo is never far from my thoughts. What an absolutely terrific wolf, who was murdered by cretins that don’t deserve to walk on the same ground that Romeo walked. I am so devastated by the killings of so many wolves, especially the Mexican grays. They are being used for target practice in the Southwest. Someone needs to round them up and get them out of that sink hole of their recovery area and place them in Grand Canyon National Park where there are no cows and plenty of game. I think they would thrive there. If someone doesn’t do something quick we are going to lose them. Poachers are sub-human as far as I’m concerned. I know in Kenya they have an army to protect their wildlife from poachers and will shoot them on sight. They realize their animals are worth more alive then dead. Eco tourism is one of their main sources of income. Why are we allowing our wildife to be savaged in this way?

      • That is an excellent idea Nabeki about the Grand Canyon. There are so few of the Mexican Grays, I fear we have already lost them, it’s just not official yet. Most of them are collared I believe, so all the poachers have to do is follow the death tracking devices. I wish the tax cut bill will go ahead and pass so that we can concentrate on something else. Everyone I talk to says the same thing: with all the focus being on tax cuts, they just don’t think the ESA/wolf issue will come up for a vote. But again, I don’t trust them. I think they are throwing April out there as a distraction as we have discussed before.

      • SCWG….I talked about this last year when the Mexican grays were under assault. I think their recovery area is a war zone. Why not try something different? The Grand Canyon has plenty of prey and no cows.

I absolutely don’t trust Congress. That’s why I keep putting out alerts and telling people to call. We have to keep flooding them with calls. I spoke to several Senators’ aides that were clueless so I explained to them what was going with wolves. That’s the scary part, so many of them have no idea what’s going on. I guess it’s our job to tell them and keep telling them. Salazar and Obama are betraying wolves and wolverines.
