“Nearly half of Swedish wolf hunt quota met”….

They can’t hide, where can they run from the hunter’s guns? Today is the first day of the Swedish wolf hunt and already half are dead. This is an outrage. Last year they said the wolves were inbred and they needed to cull them. They were going to bring in new wolves to enhance genetic diversity. So what’s their excuse now? Uh-huh!  It’s political.

Shame on the Swedish government for allowing this to go forward. This is a wolf massacre. 6500 hunters chasing around 20 wolves, sounds like blood lust to me!!

Nearly half of Swedish wolf hunt quota met

Sweden’s wolf hunt for the year began on Saturday, with nine wolves out of the allotted annual quota of 20 shot by 1pm, as protesters set off fireworks at a hunting area in Dalarna.

  1. Why?
Why does man feel the need to kill wolves? The hunt has started in Alaska too. 😦
    At Tok.

If you don’t need to kill it, don’t kill it!
Real fur isn’t necessary! And I’m not a PETA supporter.Sure people skin an animal saying they are using it, but for what? To use as tacky sick ornaments for their homes. People who have those sorts of things, including bone necklaces and skulls, are just plain disturbing!

Oh and as for the ‘tradition’ defence:
We don’t allow the Inca ritual of removing hearts from living people as a sacrifice, we don’t allow children to be bound, gagged and hauled up a mountain to have their heads ritually smashed with a blunt object and we most certainly don’t incinerate widows with their dead husbands.

      • One exception for PETA: they did do a great job helping put a global stigma on animal fur products. Good show!

      • I actually love PETA John because they brought animal rights to the forefront. They are fighting different battles, factory farming, fur, pet abuse but it’s all the same thing. The light of day is being shone on animal cruelty wherever it lurks. I do think their fight against fur has been their most successful. But there is so much animal abuse…it’s like sticking a finger in a dam that’s bursting, another leak quickly springs up.

    • Those cretins are slaughtering Alaska’s wolves to boost caribous numbers. This is so brutal. Chasing them around in super cubs, shooting them from the air or tiring them out until the wolves can’t run anymore, then the land and shoot them. A nightmare.

  5. My biggest problem with today’s hunter is this idea of how dogs are used. If you see the behaviour of a pack of dogs they are relentless in their pursuit of their prey. Whether it’s cougar’s, wolves, bears, or fox these animals are terrified and I find the swedish hunting community to be hypocrits when thy complain about an animal defending itself from being ripped apart!~ The American hunter is a different story altogether- they have it way to easy and still whine and complain about everything. All these events make hunters look negative in my estimation, and will create more impetus to change some of these hunting laws

    • One of them swedish hunters said he wants to hunt wolves to protect his hound hunting dog. He uses his hunting dog to hunt moose. Who does that? If they cared so much about their dogs, they wouldn’t let them run loose in a place filled with predators. Check out this article. Some hunter in Washington said in the crowd, let’s shoot some legislators. He also admitted he wants to get rid of wolves.

      • William, this is just more proof that hunters are not the conservationists they constantly claim they are. They are wildlife serial killers. They hate predators and the comments they make about wolves prove that. They are anti-wildlife. All they care about is killing it. Look at trappers, hunters who use snares, hunters using hound dogs to tree wildlife and shoot them, how can anyone claim these hunters care about wildlife when all they do is kill it? These people are disgusting. Nothing more than cowards with guns. They are nothing!

  6. I am getting past the point of being sick about the whinning of hunters.I am sick to death with their crys “I need to feed my family”.We are not back in the hay-day when your great, great grandpa had to go out to hunt for dinner, but,I bet you bottom dollar that he had to settle for rabbits, squrriels, and a whole bunch of little critters. He game back with what he could find.He couldn’t be away to long from his homestead to long.Back then, one didn’t have the luxury of having an A&P at ever corner. Plan and simple, there is no need to train dogs to hunt anymore and if you do,just like your great great granddaddy had to realise,it”s bound to happen that your dog could get hurt or even die from hunting.Hunters need to stop bellowing about how much training they put into their dogs and how much their upkeep cost them.I do my best to make sure that my dog, like many other owners, recieves her shots, vet checks, and all the other things that come with owning an animal.I have problably spent more on her upkeep than what I had to pay in order to get her and she is worth every penny of it.

    ===================
After threats from activists who posed for bloody images imitating dead hunters, Swedish police have been called in to protect hunters participating in the country’s controversial wolf hunt, which begins this weekend.

Wolf activists in Sweden have threatened to head to the woods and sabotage the annual licensed wolf hunt.

Rap artist Follow Him to the End of the Desert is organising a protest against the wolf hunt in Dalarna in central Sweden on Saturday.

“We have Sweden’s most dangerous people against us, all of them are armed,” he told the Expressen newspaper.

Follow Him’s Facebook fan page features provocative photos of activists wearing masks and holding rifles behind mock bloody hunters shot dead.

They are wearing t-shirts which read “Die Wolf H8tr Die”.

Police in Dalarna are taking the threats seriously and have strengthened their preparations.

“There is a risk that the tensions will escalate. However, I can’t believe that there is any danger of violence,” Bo Eriksson, press officer at the Dalarna police, told the TT news agency on Friday.

Moving around in the woods when a hunt is ongoing hunting is always a risk, he added.

“It is each and everyone’s responsibility to behave appropriately. Ricochets and missed shots can be dangerous,” he said.

The Swedish Predatory Animal Association (Svenska Rovdjursföreningen) strongly rejected the wolf activists’ message.

“We reject all forms of violent and provocative actions. In addition, we are not only against the hunters, but also those who are responsible for wolf hunting coming into being, our politicians,” secretary general Ann Dahlerus told TT.

The attention that the wolf activists are receiving is unfortunate, she believes.

“It risks firing up this extremely infected conflict further, which doesn’t help the wolf. The more polarised and conflict-filled the issue is between people, the worse it becomes for wolves and wolf management,” Dahlerus added.

The organisation has appealed to Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren to stop the hunt in a letter.

So far, 18,580 people have signed the association’s petition against the hunt, which it calls a provocation to all who care about wolves. However, many still feel desperate and powerless, according to Dahlerus.

“They do not want to experience another hunt for the vulnerable and small wolf population,” she said.

She feels the protests against the hunt as more intense this year than last.

“There is a tremendous need for people to make their voices heard. In the petition, we try to channel the voices coming to us. The responsible politicians must, even if it is at the last second, see that there is a very strong expression of opinion against the wolf hunt, ” said Dahlerus.

    ====================

Oh the irony. Hunters demand police protection because people chasing them in the woods may try and kill them… classic!

  8. I agree 100% with the activists. People who love and care about wildlife are getting sick and tired of these wildlife hating, wildlife killing cowards who just love killing things with their guns for trophy/sport. 200 wolves is nothing. You gotta love all of the lame excuses these hunters come up with to justify their disgusting deeds. F them all!

    Like

    • I agree, and Svenska Rovdjursföreningen’s announcement irritates me. The activists are using graphic displays to make a point. The hunters will post pictures around of themselves triumphantly holding their advanced weaponry besides the (REAL) bloody corpse of a dead wolf, as proof of how terribly brave they are.

The activists (SIMULATED) display is a device to expose the species bias present in human thinking, by turning that on its head, to make people rethink their views about wolves, and the hunting of them.

The only wanton violence being inflicted here is by the hunters, against the wolves. If making simulated images of violent scenes is something to be concerned about then it raises two issues. 1) 90% of Hollywood films screened in Sweden should be banned. 2) Since the hunters will not only show off the results of their violent actions, but actually carry them out for real, then surely this makes what they are doing 50x worse then the simulation of it, in which no one was hurt?

Furthermore I do wish supposed conservation organisations would stop using the term “Wolf Management” as a euphemism for endorsing the killing of wolves. It isn’t “management”. It’s trophy hunting, a means to make the chronic failures of human beings feel big and macho. It is no more “Wolf Management” than Japanese whaling is “Whale Management”.

Just my two cents for the day…

      • Neb,

With that, you have just made my day.
Activists are known to do some strange things, but it is in order to get the point across. Such role reversals are extremely common, it is a device to temporarily get rid of that arrogance people have over the animal kingdom (i.e. do unto others) and does not necessarily represent a desire to do anyone harm.

Its the kind of people who make videos or messages, arming themselves with weapons and making direct violent threats to the people around them/society who are the ones to be more concerned about.

    • As Ed Bangs said in the article, we never weighed any native wolves so we don’t know how much they really weighed. The wolf haters making up their own #s and lies to make it look like the native wolves were somehow different than the wolves today. They are all gray wolves and any expert knows all gray wolves act the same. A wolf’s weight has to do with diet more than anything else. If the native wolves were allowed to eat good instead of being hunted to eradication, they would be a bit bigger like today’s wolves.

31% of the wolves killed in Montana’s hunt were under a year of age (juveniles) and weighed an average of 62 lbs. 31% were yearlings and weighed about 80 lbs. 62% of wolves killed in Montana’s wolf hunt in 2009 were a year old or under a year of age, in other words, PUPPIES! Only 38% of wolves killed in Montana’s hunt were adults, weighing on average 97 lbs.
