Bad Wolf Delisting Bill, HR 1 Defeated in Senate!! The Second Senate Budget Bill version Has Also Gone Down in Defeat!!

UPDATE: March 9, 2011

The Senate Budget bill version, with the bad wolf delisting rider (1709) has also gone down to defeat!!

Please call Senators who voted against these bills and thank them.  They may have not done it for wolves per se but we now have to convince them that wolves do not belong in budget bills and any further budget legislation should not include wolf delisting riders.

We have to keep calling and faxing Senators, the fight is not over but with the defeat of  HR1 today we can all breathe a little easier for a few seconds.

Thanks to all for your hard and incredible work for wolves. You are true Wolf Warriors!!

I will post a list of all Senators who voted no on HR1 and the Senate version by tonight!!

Senate rejects dueling spending plans, leaves legislative stalemate

By Alexander Bolton – 03/09/11 03:52 PM ET

Senators voted largely along party lines Wednesday to reject two proposals to cut federal spending, leaving a legislative stalemate that will have to be resolved briskly to avert another potential government shutdown.

The first of two bills being voted on in the Senate has been defeated!!

HR 1 has the bad wolf rider (1713) that would have delisted gray wolves in the Northern Rockies and turned them back to brutal state management. It has been voted down!!! Stay tuned.

The vote is coming on the Senate version of the budget bill, which also has wolf delisting language/ section 1709.

    • Finally a little good news Agnes. Well that’s two weeks in a row now wolves were saved. Last week the Senate refused to take up HR1 and now this week it was voted down. So we can celebrate tonight but tomorrow we’ll be back at it because the Senate still has to pass a budget. But yes this is great news and such a blessing after so much struggle.

Thank you SO much for your wonderful guidance and inspirational posts, which continually remain a shining light in the darkness. The fight for the survival of the beautiful wolves all over the globe will be over only if EVERY SINGLE WOLF is protected. May all wolves be safe and free to roam the earth undisturbed!

  3. Please, post the fax numbers, telephone numbers, and the emails for the Senators ASAP. We had difficulty emailing the Senators. Could you verify the email addresses and post them once again with the other information?

We will do what we can.

  5. Here’s a thought. Why can’t a rider be attached to the budget bill that makes it impossible indefinitely to remove wildlife form the Endangered Species List without judicial review?

If Tester can get riders attached that would do the wolves harm, why can’t there be a rider on the bill that would protect them? Is that toomuch to hope full.

For all of us that have seen one bill defeated, we cannot rest until all riders that would generate the destruction of the wolves are removed or defeated. We need to stop celebrating and get to work once again.

    • Dear Carl & Janice, sounds like a plan. But could we actually convince them to do this…? We can certainly try, it’s well worth the effort.

But be aware, if the objective is to de-list the wolf, there will be other must pass bills that can be corrupted with “legislative language.” And we all realize this term really is as sinister as it sounds. The maladjusted strategies of those who loathe the wolf appear to be just as diligent in the task to eradicate as we are in ours to protect.

This was never a political decision to be made, yet we abuse law…and call it politics.

My heart smiles this moment, and I pause in gratitude. But we all realize that this labor of love to protect the wolf is far from over. Heart howls and hugs to all.

      Blessings….

  7. Thank God! I wish I could find a list of the US Senators who voted pro-wolf. Does anyone have a list? I thank God that they listened and this majestic species has at least a fighting chance. To think, the plight of a species hung in the hands of a few…What if, behind closed doors somewhere, whether we lived or died, was being decided? How brutal, and yet how wonderful, man can be is truly mind-boggling. Can you even fathom a world without the beautiful howls of a wolf? How sad that mankind is steadily decimating species….leaving us the sole beneficiaries of a planet wrecked from over-human-population, global warming and environmental catastophy. To our beautiful wolf friends….may your numbers increase and may man’s heart be opened so we can live and enjoy one another as it was intended.

    • Ashley…I’m going to post it tonight. We have a problem though. No Democrats voted for HR ! which contained the delisting rider, introduced by Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) in the House version. So that’s a good thing. Unfortunately almost all Democrats voted for the second bill, which contained the Jon Tester wolf delisting rider 1709. So on the one hand the Democrats defeated 1713 but voted for 1709. Here are the list of Senators that voted no on the Senate Version. They are our heroes for the Senate bill. Not sure why Senator Boxer, Senator Kerry, Senator Whitehouse, Senator Tom Udall and other liberal democrats would vote for this bill. This is very disappointing and shows we have lots of work to do before next week. Hopefully the Lords of Nature DVD will help educate these Senators on the important role wolves play in our ecosystem.

  9. Thanks to Nabeki and everyone at Wolf Warriors and the many other pro-wolf groups for keeping an eye on Congress and organizing everyone to advocate for wolves — and thank you to everyone who gave of their time and energy to try to push Senators in the right direction. I am so glad that I found this blog last year; otherwise, I am afraid I would have been largely oblivious to what was going on, and would have had much less inspiration to fight it when I did find out.

One good thing that may have come out of this budget nonsense is increased unity and energy among wolf advocates. I’ve been seeing a number of new faces around these blog comments, and the WW membership has boomed in the past few weeks. If we can sustain some of that momentum and form new connections among ourselves, it could be good for us.

In addition to the list of Democrats who voted against the Senate version, it would be interesting to see a list of Republicans who voted against HR 1. Were there any?

  10. I live in MA and I hope Sen. Kerry will vote for the second. He is usually reliable. I miss Sen. Kennedy at these times as we could usually count on him for animal issues. I breath a sigh of relief as I know that we have a step in the right direction. The struggle goes on.
