TAKE ACTION: It’s Crunch Time Warriors….

UPTDATE: APRIL 11, 2011

The NRDC sent out an alert saying the Congressional leaders allowed Tester and Simpson to add the wolf delisting language back into the budget bill on Friday and it was OK’d by the White House.

Wolves have been betrayed for political expediency. We cannot let this stand Warriors!!We have to hammer the Capital Switchboard phone lines.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO CALL, FAX AND EMAIL SENATORS. DO NOT GIVE UP. WE CAN WIN THIS FOR WOLVES.

I added talking points to the body of this post for you to use, they were written by william h.

=======

It’s crunch time Wolf Warriors. This is the week we have to make a difference for wolves. The current budget bill,  contains the Tester wolf delisting rider and we have just a few short days to turn this around.

Budget bill pending before Congress would remove wolves from endangered list

BILLINGS, Mont. — Gray wolves in Montana and Idaho would be taken off the endangered list under the budget bill pending before Congress, two Western lawmakers said.

Inclusion of the language to lift protections for wolves was confirmed by the offices of Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Idaho Republican Rep. Mike Simpson on Saturday.

http://www.greenfieldreporter.com/view/story/ecf20d5f19ab4a10aba13585b3c8accf/MT–Endangered-Wolves-Congress/

PLEASE continue to call and email the Senate and do not stop until we find a white knight who is willing to stand for wolves and introduce an amendment that will strip this nightmare out of the bill.

I know I’ve called upon you many times but this is truly the worst situation wolves in Montana and Idaho have been in. If the budget bill passes, with the delisting language intact, Montana and Idaho wolves will be at the mercy of brutal state management. They will lose all rights to judicial review. In other words, they will be doomed in the Northern Rockies.

Once again, here are the phone numbers and contact info for the Senate. Please call not only your own Senators but every Senate Democrat as many times as you can.  Thank you.

We can win this. We are mighty when we unite, never forget that!!

=======

Capital Switchboard Numbers give the name of the Senator & you will be transferred to their office. You will then either speak to a staff member, or on the weekend – to voice mail.
When possible ask to speak to each Senator’s environmental aide. This will give you a better chance to get your message across because you will be talking to someone who is familiar with the issue.

1.877.851.6437

Be polite but express your outrage over the game of chess Congress is playing with wolves’ lives. The delisting  language must be stripped out of the final bill.

Talking Points

(contributed by william h. Thanks!!)

•Be polite and direct with the person you are talking to! Focus on a few key issues:

•ESA never been amended before

•Dangerous precedent for all wildlife ie Grizzlies or Lynx next to be targeted

•Political undermining of legislation through riders which is inappropriate on Budget bill and the fact these riders would never pass through the regular democratic channels

•Toxic political climate for wolves in Idaho and Montana, site the wolf disaster declaration and the Phil Hart legislation of no wolf prosecution for law breakers

•And finally the outrageous no further judicial review language!!

PLEASE STAND UP FOR WOLVES NOW. THIS COULD BE THE END OF THEM IN THE NORTHERN ROCKIES!! THEY NEED US IN THEIR DARK HOUR!

His Last Howl

Codi Rogers / Brownsville TX

The last howl
That sounded
Was from the wolf’s heart
Forever to echo
In his pack’s ears
Forever to remind
In their hearts
For a heartless hunter
Rose his gun that day
And his victim was
This wolf his pack
Sings about everyday
The man took his body away
The pack howls
As one
In sorrow
In pain
They shall forever
Remember the wolf
That fell that
One fateful winter day.

With a Spending Deal in Hand, Lawmakers Now Turn to the Details

WASHINGTON — As more details of the budget deal between President Obama and Congressional leaders trickled out on Sunday, lobbyists and lawmakers stepped up their efforts to secure or kill specific provisions benefiting wolf hunters in Montana, profit-making colleges and various public works projects.

  1. This anti-wolf bill is also unconstitutional as it violates people’s rights to contest it in the courts because such action is the action of a dictatorship, not a democracy.

    • Thanks william for the talking points. If you don’t mind I used them in the main body of the post. I’ve been so swamped I haven’t had time to write any.

We have been betrayed by the Congressional leaders, they signed off on Tester and Simpson inserting the delisting language back into the budget bill on Friday with the White House OKing it. They think that Testers seat is worth losing the White House or their own Senate seats, because I can tell you there is tremendous outrage over this. The Democrats sold wolves down the river for a Senate seat. Unbelievable..but that doesn’t mean we should stop or give up. If we put enough pressure on them, they might vote against this budget slaughter bill. There is going to be an up or down vote and we will know every single Senator that betrays wolves.

  9. This is the letter I faxed to Senator Tester. The introduction was added then sent to all other Senators on the Public Works Committee. Along with it I also sent a picture of a stunning grey wolf whose gaze holds you accountable, simply stating, “Through the eyes you can see the heart and soul of all creatures…even humans. So be sure to look deep within the eyes of mankind.” If my letter is not noticed, the picture alone would be difficult to ignore.

    *****************************************************

    Dear Senator…..

This is the letter I faxed to Senator Tester of Montana. I urge you to use all your influence to remove the wolf delisting rider from the Federal Budget Bill. I am counting on you to stand up to this injustice. Please hold Senator Tester accountable for his actions. In fairness, at the very least, delisting wolves is a controversial issue that demands open and honest debate…not governance by rider. If wolf delisting is such a popular topic, and if Senator Tester has the courage of his convictions, then why does he not introduce a separate piece of legislation? Please remove any wolf delisting riders from the Federal Budget. My very best wishes to you always.
    *****************************************************
    Dear Senator Tester,

Thomas Jefferson said, “Nobody can acquire honor by doing what is wrong.” Martin Luther King said,
“Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.” These two quotes encompass values that I firmly believe in, and I had hoped that you did to.

You claim to be a man of high ethics, as stated on your web site, and also vowed not to legislate environmental issues by rider. Why then do you not have any qualms about using the Federal Budget as a vehicle to delist wolves, insisting that it be enacted as governance by rider…? I also question your conscience with regard to your prior legislative language which was crafted according to extirpation standards only.

Wolves have absolutely nothing to do with federal spending, just as personal or political agendas have nothing to do with honor. I am extremely disappointed in your lack of character as well as the manner in which the wolf situation is being handled by those who were entrusted with pivotal positions of authority.

Lawfully, as required by the ESA, the viability of any species is not to be subject to political whim. Yet we continue to abuse law and call it politics. Please remember that you have a sworn duty to uphold the Constitution and any rider or provision that does not allow due process of law undermines the rights of the American people. It will be a hollow victory that will brand you for the remainder of your political career.

Wolves do not have powerful lobbies or deep pockets, as I am certain you are well aware of as Vice Chairman of the Bipartisan Congressional Sportsman’s Caucus. I understand that there is an obstinate mindset that will not accept anything but eradication, and that the wolf is too often viewed as an inconvenient and expendable predator instead of a member of America’s wildlife. Although I do not understand the need for all the wolf hysteria.

Yet why did Governor Otter exacerbate the situation by not allowing the FWS to do their job, why has Idaho declared a “wolf emergency,” and why was it necessary for Governor Schweitzer to go through the motions of defying the ESA? There is already a provision written into the ESA, Section 10( j ), which allows states the flexibility to handle problem wolves. They are already equipped to enact this provision as it was intended.

Viewed from satellite, it appears this is a carefully orchestrated maneuver to take advantage of fear, uncertainty and doubt while exposing vulnerabilities through which the ultimate goal of wolf delisting will be achieved…at any cost. I ask you Senator Tester, which species is next…and for whom…?

If wolves have recovered sufficiently, then allow the proper methods to be enacted. And if wolf delisting is such a popular issue, why then not introduce it as a separate piece of legislation instead of taking a cheap shot at the ESA. Yet if dismantling the ESA is also an objective, then why not at least be honest about it. I was taught that if you really believe in something then stand up for it, and not take the cowards way out.

  11. Signing petitions, making calls to Senators, is not the only thing you can do. Although the situation for our beloved wolves seems dire…it is not over …until it is over. And it is never too late to let your voices be heard. Many times, the only power we have as consumers is to make informed decisions, and the power of the purse. For when we buy anything, we are actually endorsing not only the product, but also the methods corporations use in daily practice. As you already know, this concept has been invaluable in many situations of concern.

And so inspired with this belief, I made several calls today, namely, to McDonald’s and Burger King. I wanted to find out where they get their potatoes and beef. I do not endorse fast foods, but I expressed my concerns and explained the situation of how many people feel concerning Idaho , including Idaho potatoes which concerned customer’s feel have wolf blood on them. They weren’t actually able to tell me where they get their potatoes or beef, since their customers are proprietary, but I am certain if there were any question as to any kind of legal issue concerning their product, someone …somewhere would be able to trace it back to the source.

I urged them to find out since it would be in their best interest, and there will be many more calls coming expressing concern. I also reminded them I was certain that they would want to keep ahead of the fray and provide information to consumers everywhere who have similar concerns.

It may seem trivial, but if anyone is interested in making a call to their favorite fast food restaurant, make the call even if you don’t eat fast food and at least put the bug in their ear. A steady pressure will remind them that this issue is one of great significance and that you want answers. If it only takes one voice to plant a seed….then many voices can harvest an entire crop.

Also contact the Idaho Potato Commission and let them know how you feel.

    http://www.idahopotato.com/contact

Think of the tactics being used by anti-wolf lobbies. Have the courage of your convictions, but do not stoop to their level. Most importantly, do not relent. Now…be creative….think outside the box. You never know, until you try.

  13. I also placed my call to the Idaho Potato Commission, and they actually returned my call a few minutes ago. Very interesting conversation, especially after I mentioned how many people feel strongly enough about what is going on with wolves out there that they are already starting to boycott Idaho potatoes. And to expect the potato to take it on the chin as a result.

The woman was wonderful, she said that they hear concerns about many things, wolves etc. I told her that that’s because Idaho potatoes represent Idaho….and people want to find a way to reach someone who can say “hey….tell these people to get it together!! ” She asked that I send an email with my concerns, and she would forward it to the president of the IPC and he would respond. I am asking everyone to call, and voice your concerns too. Think of the impact we can make when the phone rings off the wall.
