Betrayed: Senate Passes Wolf Budget Delisting Slaughter Bill…

VOTE 81-19

Very, very sad news. The Senate  has voted to pass the  budget bill containing Jon Tester’s wolf delisting rider.  I really can’t say much more right now, I’m too devastated by this news. Wolves will  be turned over to brutal state management, with no judicial review, meaning they are delisted forever.

I’ll post more on this later tonight, right now I’m going to try to come to terms with this horrible decision by the Senate Democrats to throw wolves under the bus for Tester’ Senate seat in the 2012 election. They will now be known as the party that gutted the Endangered Species Act and politically stripped wolves of  their protections, something never done before since the ESA was enacted.

I will never vote for another Democrat in my life again. I don’t consider that party to be anything I want to be affiliated with. They have made a huge mis-calculation if they don’t think they will pay a political price for what they’ve done. Just wait until all the dead wolf pictures start showing up on the Internet and the wolf hunts start. We should all be sure to  keep them informed how the wolf hunts and wolf persecution is going. Shame on them!!

This is the Senate vote breakdown. The Yea votes all betrayed wolves. We won’t forget their names.

  1. Furious about this development. Wondering if Obama can strip the rider off the bill.

    • He can’t for during Clinton presidency, the surpreme court ruled unconstitutional. He can’t take one or so out.He has to veto the whole bill.

      Like

      • The supreme court ruled that legislative riders do not violate the constitution.

But nothing was said about a rider that has a stipulation which precludes any further judicial review.

So they can put them in…but they can’t take them out.

Is it me….or is something sideways here…?

      • Todd Thorn said it better than I did. The Presisent can not take one bill out, such as the Tester’s bill or one he does not like,he would have to veto the whole thing and it would be sent back to congress.I just probably confused you more. Sorry.

      • That’s the worst part of this process- forcing through a rider onto a MUST PASS budget bill… no debate, no committee, would never pass on it’s own merits. If the president had the power of the line item veto…. we don’t know if he would even veto this. Baucus, REID, Salazar with the consent of Boxer and Cardin on the Environment committee rubber stamped this….Special interest politics at it’s worst- at the expense of an already persecuted animal- BOGUS

      • This is one of the worst abuses of power by a party that is supposed represent the little people, the down trodden, the persecuted animals..yet the Rebulicans couldn’t have done any worse. This was a stab in the back to every environmentalist, every wolf advocate, every wildlife advocate. It was a big middle finger to the people…

  2. Don’t hold your breath on that Priscilla. Obama has no regard for wildlife of any kind, let along wolves. He is the one to allow his SOI to delist them in 2009. Well, Mr. President and all you Dems, let’s see how this plays out for you in 2012.

    • The fault rests entirely with Obama’s appointment of Ken Salazar as Interior Secretary and I couldn’t be more angry about it. If this means that Planned Parenthood and NPR trashing amendments are included, then maybe Obama will
wake up and strip out the riders. Won’t hold breath. Would rather kick someone’s sorry …

The meditation I lead in November of 2009, spoke to this terrible time ahead. I’ll revisit my notes tonight as right now I don’t recall the entire message.

  5. Nothing Obama could do if he wanted to other than veto the whole bill. No line item veto. Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional under Clinton. Only remedy through government is an appeal of the legislation using new legislation in the future.

At least that is what I think the situation/option are.

Illusion is everything and nothing. Oh we go through the motions of liberty alright, but we are continuously finding excuses to feed the leviathan of corruption. It would be nice if SOMEONE…SOMEWHERE would show true leadership and set people straight as to why we even have a Constitution.

Technically, he could still veto it. But Democrats seem intent on helping Mr. Tester claim his 2012 prize. He can wear his badge of cowardice to his swearing in ceremony, just to remind everyone the kind on man he really is.

  9. I think I’m going to go have myself a good cry, then I’ll be able to think more clearly. The wolf is still not gone and won’t be as long as we as a people protect them. Whether it be in wildlife sanctuaries or any other kind of private refuge, they will live. If each of us that believe in the preservation of the wolf, donated as little as a dollar a month, property could be obtained and whatever else needs to be done to ensure their survival. I know that nothing is impossible for those who refuse to accept defeat. Think on it, and remember none of us can do it alone, but as a collective whole there is plenty we can do. I can’t and won’t accept this as a final defeat, and neither should anyone else. As for democracy, we’re to busy preaching it to the rest of the world to practice it here.

  11. 16 years. 16 long years of time and effort… a chance to mend the mistakes of the past and learn so much more. But no, instead it’s a middle finger to science and reason, in its place are fear and hatred. Why? Because some self-centred prats of corrupt politicians and the malicious asinine hunting groups they pander to want to get their own way and morality be damned. The ones who stood up for the grey wolf had followed all the legal rules and jumped through countless hoops thrown at them by the anti-wolf crowd; who, themselves, had absolutely no qualms about side-stepping the laws. Governor Otter and Schweitzer had made so many unsettling comments concerning the treatment of the grey wolves in their states that should have got them chucked out on their rear as soon as they exclaimed their personal defiance of the laws they were elected to uphold. It is nothing short of horrifying how many senators in the U.S. Congress have made their views clear on how much they truly value democracy.
Jon Tester, Butch Otter and Brian Schweitzer, hope you never get elected again, hope your lives goes down the pan like Sarah Palin’s, you idiotic corrupt rotten-to-the-core b*****ds.

I know how horrible you feel, I was so tired last night I just fell asleep very early. All the lights were on when I woke up. The last two years have been an emotional roller coaster. One brief minute we’re happy and the next in deep despair. But we are going to regroup. We have a huge base of wolf advocates. Just because the haters got their wolf hating politicians to do their bidding doesn’t mean we are going to give up. Like you I worry about the pups that are being born right now into this nightmare. I wish to god we had never had the reintroduction to bring them back to this horror. But we are NOT going to abandon them, there has to be a way to help the wolves and we’re going to find it.

Perhaps in the end this will be a case of things having to get worse before they could get better. Each time we won protection for the wolves, they would lose it again. All this going back and forth and no real sense of peace. Maybe from this disaster some plan/idea/movement will give the wolves more solid protection. Grasping at straws here, but i cannot accept that there is nothing we can do. There HAS to be something that we can do! This anti wolf legislation was SO WRONG on SO MANY LEVELS! It was wrong to have it in a Budget Bill, avoiding a vote on it alone. It is wrong to kick any species off the Endangered Species List for political, not scientific reasons. It is wrong to kick any species off of the Endangered Species List permanently. It is wrong to say all the above is not subject to judicial review!! *FUMING

Part of the problem as I see it is the grass roots movement was willing to take off the gloves a little and roll around in the dirt with the haters but the big orgs were worried about their funding and so many played nice, nice with these cretins and that’s why we lost because we weren’t radical enough. You can’t win a war by being meek. The groups that were supposed to be leading this charge were meek. Now it’s a new day, we’ve learned some very hard lessons and maybe out the ashes like the Phoenix we can rise again. I will not and cannot accept there is nothing that can’t be done. It’s not over.

  18. I have been involved with this issue for about 5 years now and had never thought it would come to this. I am outraged and disgusted at our so called leadership. I haven’t written anything for a while but I just happened to tonight. It’s a start but will soon be off to pretty much every member of congress, newspaper, friend, family member, and anyone else I feel like sending it to… I will be adding to it and doing some more fact checking for references, but here goes….

President Obama and Secretary of the Interior Salazar,

Let it be known, that on this day, April 14, 2011, a major travesty has taken place and will forever effect my confidence in this nation and it’s intentions towards the environment. I speak of the bill that just passed to fund the government, which by itself was necessary to continue funding the interests of this country, but also included something that had nothing to do with the budget at all. I refer to
Title VII, Sec. 1713, pg. 290 of Making appropriations for the Department of Defense and
the other departments and agencies of the Government
for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2011, and for other purposes. The underhanded move by Sec. Tester and Rep. Simpson to add this language to a must pass legislation is against everything I thought this country was founded on. The fact that, for political, personal, or what ever their reason, the onslaught of hatred and outright discrimination of the grey wolf has caused this action, is by far the most despicable and unforgivable use of power I have ever seen. The legal battle of the de-listing of the grey wolf has been playing out for a long time and has been ruled by a federal court. Federal Judge Donald Molloy has interpreted the law as it was written, keeping this species protected under the Endangered Species Act, with provisions that required proper science and reason to determine when a species is recovered. By their own admission, the powers that be have not conducted any 5 year surveys on the species, as written in the ESA, (Sec. 4, pg. 230 of Endangered Species Act of 1973) in the years since they were listed under the ESA and the science used to determine a viable genetic population is over a decade old. The ESA states that in order to de-list a species, consideration must be made with the best possible science available. Where is the science in hiding a bill rider to de-list a species? It has never been done before where our own congress has to debate about de-listing any species and it is not their place to make that decision. This is, in my eyes, unlawful as it is written in the ESA. Federal Judge Donald Molloy had already determined that the original de-listing of the grey wolf in 2009 was against the law and was not acceptable. Then after protections were restored to the grey wolf, two Governors defied federal law, telling officials to not investigate the poaching of a protected species.

It is a good idea to support WWP. Of all the groups in the west they probably have their finger on the pulse of western politics more than any other group. We need to continue to chip away at the power of the livestock industry. WWP already has their number. These Democratic senators that sold out wolves will pay a price politically

    • William, WWP…clue me in here, who are they? It has been one of the longest timed-lapsed miserable days of my life.

So many wolves will be sacrificed at the alter of politics, we can not allow their sacrifice to be in vain or be lost without purpose. We must find a way to turn this into something better than before.

What is remarkable, is what the Wolf brings out in each of us. He is both impetus and salvation. He unites us in a common goal and shows us how to persist in spite of situation and circumstance.

I walk with the wolves in my heart during their darkest times ahead, and send them my love and prayers.

They have had quite alot of success in the courts fighting livestock interests in the west. Jon Marvel’s group. It is about time we start holding the livestock industry accountable for their anti-wildlife agenda. These latest events might do the trick. Livestock operators want predator free landscape, when cattle dies wolves are blamed and the WS goon hit squad is brought in- No proof the kill is by wolves, wolves being in the area is enough. Read “Slaughter the animals poison the earth” by Olsen. It describes the rancher mentality and the dark days of the old poisoning campaigns. These ranchers are paranoid psychopaths

      • william….out of this terrible tragedy something good will come. More people will support WWP, Alliance for the Wild Rockies and Friends of the Clearwater. Many will stop giving money to the groups that sold wolves out for a “settlement”. Tester will probably lose his election and the sellout 81 will take heat for this. Obama will be a one term President.

As you said, we have to take back our public lands. They belong to the American people not the ranchers. If they don’t have enough of there own land to graze their cows then they shouldn’t be ranching. We have to be more radical in pushing for change. The gloves are off, the war is still on and I plan to do battle with everything I have. We are a mighty group, we may have lost this round and I admit it’s a huge loss but now we change our strategy. We learned great lessons from this. Wolves still have us working for them and we won’t desert them. We need to brainstorm.

  20. Hello,

I have been so distressed by this for days, I can think of nothing else. I love wolves. They are so beautiful and noble. Please tell me what I can do. I hate all politicians. Now I hate Obama for being a coward and all other Democrats. I called Barbara Boxer’s office several times because I’m in California but they don’t care and neither did she in the end. Only story that gave me solace is that Utah governor’s office was flooded with pro-wolf emails. What can I do? If I could, I would go protect them myself and risk my life. Those people who want to kill wolves, hunt babies in their den/poison them are evil. I am praying for wolves. Much love!

We are all grieving for the wolves that will be slaughtered for Tester’s Senate seat. We have to make sure that he is not re-elected. I see no difference between him and Denny Rehberg. There is already a FB page dedicated to defeating Tester.

I want to start a FB page that is closed to just wolf advocates. A place we can talk amongst ourselves and brainstorm I will let everyone know as soon as it’s up. I know this is not the end. We may have to suffer through some tough times but I believe we will prevail in the end. Please keep the faith and know I will not desert you. I’m going to be here fighting for wolves.

I think asking Obama to do anything would not be a good utilization of time or resources. He has shown to be very anti wildlife.
I have said for a while the only way to make change is to march in the streets but the only people marching are tea party people (that looks very dismal indeed as if Republican party was not bad enough). I think it is going to be us giving money to lobbyist and showing up at our townhall meetings with environmental issues with facts (not fiction). March in the street time.

    Like

    • Yes Melinda, I agree. We need to be marching in the streets, showing up at town halls and making ourselves visible. Part of the problem is that many people believed the big orgs would pull this out and so relied on them. They thought if they signed a few petitions that’s all they had to do. It doesn’t work that way. If we want something down we have to do it ourselves. This may be the beginning of a grass roots movement to protect our wildlife. The state game agencies have been holding our wildlife hostage for hunters. There are only 12 million hunters in this country, a drop in the bucket. That’s what has to change. Wolves belong to all the American people, not just a few haters in Montana and Idaho. This is a wake up call for America…we need to do the hard work of activism to effect change not sign DOW petitions and send them money. Where did that get wolves??

The fight to protect wolves here and in the world isn’t over. That means for us to NOT give up hope or become paralyzed in apathy. It means we still fight for wolves and not OUR egos. As we all know, this particular fight for wolf existence has been going back and forth for a long time now in the West. However, it is time for “real change” and I don’t mean Obama’s version of compromising, negotiating bargaining change! The ESA has always needed a revamp in the way of more teeth so to speak. Maybe that will be now or the near future. I’ve always admired WWP’s attitude- tough and loud. I wish more wolf advocates thus far would have mentored this type of attitude as we have won the fight over the clueless public. These past few years, many wolf advocates have been too afraid to be labeled “environmental zealots” if they showed an ounce of compassion regarding saving wolves. Now look where we are! (I can say now to a select few of you pansies- you were wrong.)

The fight to protect all endangered species will NEVER end…

For now, I am calling my senators who voted for this murder to tell them they have lost my support forever. And, they have broken a peice of my heart.

I have been praying for the best possible solution for our wolves. I had thought that the answer was to not allow the rider to be passed, but if we had succeeded then we would not have the opportunity to break the vicious cycle of fighting this same battle over and over again.

This experience has taught me that a shift in perspective is needed and to chart a new course. I rededicate myself to this purpose and to nurture a better future for our wolves…and our world.

Judas has had his day, and managed to steal home base with this ONE freebie, but it will never happen again. Now we know what kind of game they play, and they can only win with a stacked deck in their favor.

This tragedy could very likely been avoided if environmental activist organizations who advocate for Wolves had realized that and that there organizations are essentially preaching to the choir. The concern for the majority of Americans is the economy. But if there limited attention spans could be shifted for a moment by a celebrity they probably would have reacted neghatively to cubs being killed in there dens.

This rider flew because politicians are politicians and no meaningful constituency was aware of its existence. Lets wake up to the fact that our concerns and what we are aware of a great deal of the time are blips on the “Kardasian” seeking radar screens of most Americans. Are deepest, heartfelt concerns are not the concerns of the vast majority of Americans. All stops should have been pulled out getting as many celebrities as possible ,and there are many who would have stood up for wolves, to bring this bill it to the attention of the American people. What De Caprio did for the Amir Tiger, Another celebrity with a following ,could have done for the Wolves.

Its not to late to save the the rest of EPA and a NEW WOLF BILL CAN BE INTRODUCED TO ANNUL THIS ONE. Lets get our heads out of the clouds and look around at the gritty social and political and reality that unfortunately determines the life of of this planet.

    • Excellent analysis Joel. I included the quote from “The Art of War” on the front page after “the settlement was brokered”, because it was why the settling groups lost.

The sad thing is we did try to engage a celebrity to take up the cause but if you don’t have an “in” with them then you are just screened out. The big orgs had the money and the clout to convince a big name to front this issue but they didn’t go that way. We had one video done by Ashley Judd during the hunts and that was about it as far as I know.

Trying to decide the next move is tough. It’s going to take money to pay attorneys to file a lawsuit, money that only the big orgs have and I haven’t heard a word out of anyone so far that they are willing to take this on. To annul the rider certainly is a possibility but we’d have to have some “mo” behind it. Bills can languish in Congress. Is there any Senator or Representative that would take up this issue? It could take years to garner enough sponsors, meanwhile wolves are already in the cross hairs….Idaho and Montana are just waiting for the sixty days to be up. God only knows what hell awaits wolves but since they have virtually no protection from the brutal state management plans, we can imagine it. If we want to help wolves we have to come up with something pretty quickly.

Martha Stewart also has a segment on her show about endangered species and other imperiled animals. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have the wolf as one of her guests. There are so many wolf sanctuaries nationwide…and plenty of wolves that are wonderful good will ambassadors for their species.

Most of them just choose to ignore the situation and turn a blind eye. Maybe it was too controversial for them…but many celebs were contacted over and over and wolves were ignored. Jane Valez Mitchell did a short segment on wolves in 2009 when they were being hunted.

It’s really a shame one of them didn’t stand up and help wolves in the Northern Rockies….now the situation is a hundred times worse then it was in 2009. Everyone is so blindsided by this and we all want a quick fix. We can’t believe wolves are suddenly left unprotected after working for years to keep them protected. The Democrat party is to blame for this. They betrayed wolves from the beginning of Obama’s presidency and continue to do so. We have no allies in Congress, we are on our own.

I would urge anyone who does not want the wolf, must simply understand why this beautiful and loving wolf, but it is farm the sake that they move there, so the food is of course right in front of it, it must understand the farms. 40. First off, I originally posted this on a different site, but it’s a group that is very dedicated to helping wolves much like this website is, and after seeing how worn out a lot of people are on here, and understandably so, I hope I can maybe, just maybe, inspire a little hope. If you don’t mind…

Please don’t give up on wolves. Years ago, people like us were the only hope the wolves here had. Thanks to us, they survived. If we give up because of a few greedy fools, wolves are guaranteed to fail. But if we stay strong and do our part to save them, it may take a while…in fact, for most of us, it will not happen in our own lifetime, but I can promise you this, someday, wolves, and other animals facing their same hatred, will thrive once more.

I know a lot of people on the pro wolf side detest the human race. I used to, as well. But I made a promise, long ago, to someone very important to me never to hate again.

Look at what hate has done to the wolves. It is hatred that brought about their near extinction. It is hatred that is responsible for what happened just recently. If we fight hatred with our own, it will accomplish nothing. Never hate your opponent. Those greedy, corrupt sport hunters may look and sound evil to us. I myself just cannot believe that any good person could rob another being of its existence purely for sport or, rather, poops and giggles.

I don’t think many of those anti wolf jerks responsible for this are purposely evil and sadistic. At least, not all of them. They just don’t see wolves and other animals the way we do. They see them as numbers. Trophies. Pelts. Money. And that is why I hate the overpopulation argument. Not only is it biologically absurd, it strips us of the one thing we like to boast about and hold over other animals: empathy. I watched several videos some “hunters” took (I use that term loosely here) of themselves trapping wolves. You could see the pain and suffering in those wolves. And those hunters were laughing, having a grand old time, and they would just lazily go “here’s number twenty four” and kill the trapped wolf.

Sport hunters do not see animals truly as living beings. They understand somewhere, in the very back of their mind, that they are killing, but it doesn’t fully click with them. They are not purposely evil, malicious monsters. They just hide behind the human superiority ideal and detach themselves from wild animals because that is how they are able to continue doing these, what are in our minds, horrible things.

Neither side will truly be able to accept the other, because there is just too wide a gap between us. We may not be a different race, but in some ways when it comes to our mentality, we might as well be.

I don’t hate the people who support sport hunting or do it themselves. I feel sorry for them. Those people who tortured those wolves are incapable of understanding the beauty of life the way people like us are. They will never be able to fully appreciate just how unique every being is. They will never appreciate the wolf the way we do. The wolves, most unfortunately, will pay the price for their lack of empathy and basic compassion.

There is no race on this earth that is more divided, or more xenophobic than the human. We have this idiotic, unfounded idea that everything remotely different from us is determined to wipe us all out and do everything in its power to make us as miserable as we possibly can. We are the center of the universe, and everything hates us and wants us gone because we are oh-so-important. Just as a lot of the anti wolf people like to say wolves don’t care about us, they don’t care about them either. For wolves, even killing us would be unpleasant for them. They want nothing at all to do with us. Most wild animals don’t.

Wolves, sharks, bats, spiders, mice, you name it. Very few animals have been as viciously villainized as those I’ve listed. And of course it doesn’t end there. Just look at what we’ve done, and continue to do, to members of our own race. (“Whuts that? OMFG! You have darker/lighter skin/eyes/hair/whatever? Ahhhhh! Kill it with fire!”)

Sharks in particular have me concerned because of their very low reproductive rates. This may sound absolutely terrible, but a good friend of mine said this, and after thinking on it, I almost agree with him…”if the great white is wiped out in my lifetime, I hope that the last picture I see, is of the last specimen with a human dangling from its jaws.”

We need to act NOW to save these animals. Simply complaining about the situation won’t fix it. We deserve some time to grieve. We have been betrayed by those who were supposed to be representing us. It’s only natural to be upset. But let’s not give up. Only then will we have truly lost the fight. Remember: the wolves can’t speak for themselves. If we want to protect them, we have to do it for them. And the same can be said for many animals.

I firmly believe that, if the human race does indeed go extinct any time soon, it will not be because of the Mayan calendar, or Judgment day. It will be because of our sheer parnoia and unwillingness to accept our place in the balance of nature. We as a race need to come together and figure out something quick. Killing every other living thing because there’s a 0.0000001% chance it MIGHT harm one of us is NOT going to help us. And it sure as hell isn’t going to help them.

This “human > everything else” mindset has to go. It’s natural to value and want to protect one’s own species. But our phobia of everything natural is not only dangerous to us as a race, it’s downright unhealthy for us as individuals. All of us are going to die at some point. We don’t want to die, we want to live long lives. But it will happen. We just need to come to terms with our mortality and stop punishing other beings for our insecurity as a race.

    • Alikeni…..Very well done and so much truth to what you’re saying. It’s true people are tired, literally wiped out tired from the battle that has gone on for two years non-stop, since Obama and his rancher Interior Secretary, delisted wolves. But I can assure you we are not giving up. We are experiencing a lull right now because people are still reeling from the suddeness of the delisting. But we live to fight another day., In fact I believe the grass roots wolf movement is stronger then ever. We need a plan, a course of action and it will come. Everyone has something to contribute. We must work together to find a way to protect wolves, It won’t be easy but I believe we will find a way. We have to!!

    • Alikeni, as the dust continues to settle from this battle, I’ve been reading over our comments the past several days, trying to make sense of it all. I have come to the conclusion…there simply is no sense to be found, there is so little soul left in the world, but we can change that…and we will.

Your words of wisdom are both a comfort and an inspiration. Thank you.

  41. This is such a travesty. My poor fiance has had to listen to me rant for hours over this sad and sickening situation. It is unconscionable that the people that are already running this country into the ground should have the ability (not the right!) to sanction the mass murder of entire populations!! Obama and his screw crew have become to the wolves what Hitler was to the Jews!! I’ve got no ties to anything or anyone but I’m more than willing to join in the fight to beat this nonsense into submission where it belongs. Both of the Senators here in Oklahoma voted against this (thank god!). I think I’m rambling, my apologies, this is a truly upsetting event. I’ll keep my eyes out for your FB group and as for the money needed to back anything that needs to be done, I read in an earlier post that if everyone that was against this put in just a dollar land and protection could be bought for the wolves. What if that same theory was used in getting the money together to fight this by whatever legal means necessary?

    • Hi Stephanie,
Yes this is a terrible tragedy. The wolf hunts in 2009 were horrible but it’s much more toxic now, the haters didn’t get their hunt in 2010..so they threw a big tantrum and got the politicians to do their dirty work for them. My heart breaks to think this is pupping season. I think of those precious babies that are being born into this nightmare.
BUT, there is so much outrage over the underhanded delisting of these wolves, it has galvanized the pro wolf grass roots movement. People are ready to fight for these animals. They are brainstorming to find ways to right this wrong. I know attorneys are pouring over case law to see if anything pro-active can be found to save the wolves.

These are hard times but I truly believe answers will be found.
