Please make sure you contact the 81 Senators who sacrificed the Northern Rockies gray wolves, especially the Democrats who betrayed their party and wolves for Jon Tester’s Senate seat. Only three Democrats voted no.
Let them know not only did they throw wolves under the bus but they gutted the Endangered Species Act and opened the door for any species to be delisted that gets in the way of someone’s political agenda. Further tell them you’ll be changing your party affiliation to Independent. They’ve done irreparable damage to the Democrat party and Endangered Species Act. We’ll keep them updated on the coming wolf hunts and slaughter. Too bad they didn’t do their homework and only listened to one side of the story before they made their fateful decision.
This delisting included Montana and Idaho (with no judicial review), parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah. Wyoming was not included in this bill. Wyoming was delisted later by Ken Salazar, Interior Secretary.

If you check out Diane’s FB page, there is a “Defeat Tester 2012” that Wolf Advocates created. I suggested that we really use this to our advantage and use something like “Defeat Obama and the 81”. Yes, I know Tester is a sleaze bag, but let’s face it, he certainly didn’t accomplish this all alone.

BUT it would never have reached his desk if Harry Reid and the rest of the sellout Dems, who were supposed to care about wolves and the ESA, didn’t pass this horrible bill. Obama delisted wolves twice. It certainly couldn’t be worse under the Republicans, this admin has done more damage to our wolves and wild horses than Bush ever did and I’m not a Republican. The Lookout Pack is decimated, they’ve had four wolves poached from that pack including the pup’s bloody pelt those low lifes tried to send Fed-Ex. The alpha female is missing and presumed dead. They would never allow the wolves to be removed to safety, they want them here so they can use and abuse them. This is the same thing that happened to wolves a hundred years ago. Apparently we learned nothing from the extermination of wolves in the West.
I’m bracing for what’s coming in a few months. we lived through this in 2009 and now they’re delisted again, all because some hater figured out they could get the hateful politicians to do an end run around the ESA. They didn’t even last a year on the list. So incredibly sad.

I too was so happy when we brought them back – and adopted one of the Sawtooth Pack that later was turned over to the Nez Perce. 1. Since wolf advocates, for better or worse, are looked upon as single-issue outliers in an electoral systems controlled and balanced by two partisan groups – with the corollary that if one loses the other gains – one must be extremely careful to which party one gives advantage.
a) we know that the Republican party is largely unified in their quest to diminish all sectors of federal responsibility, activity, and control of governance EXCEPT for making war (although this is a generality, until that party withdraws from this agenda, it should not be regarded as an alternative. In this reality is your strategic mistake:
1) There is a continuing fight which those perceiving the Wolf outside of its necessary wildland system are here failing to understand: In Utah, for instance, (ID and MT too) the state is attempting repeatedly to gain all federal lands in order to develop greater “recreation” capacity, which they define as roads. I have posted here the problem with roads and wolves.
2) you will not succeed politically. You might make slow inroads IF you approach the issue armed with knowledge persistence, and rational arguments.
3) White people constantly ignore and sideline the alternative culture which lived with wolves for thousands of yeass, often understanding, sometimes sufficiently revering these Others. I recommend that the People reading from Michigan, WI< Ontario, MN, ND Manitoba, contact the Ojjibwe with the intent of understanding. In the Rockies, please look to the many tribes involved there, as well as in WA and the far West. Every tribal tradition has something to teach, whether about respect for the land and the life upon it, or specifically about proper human interaction. You will notice that they are regaining significance due to their positive outlook – this is a force you need.
4) I am still as outraged as I was since teenage, about the ravaging and killing, and so sometimes take notice of some activities not worthy of mention. Should you choose to involve yourself in responding to the killing in such ways, you will do best not to align yourself formally with groups, as it is most important that most groups not be perceived as action-oriented.
2. Therefore I offer , as I did in a previous comment on this site, the idea that you should MAKE COALITION with wildlands advocates, bird advocates ( a huge group! Birds are impacted by human development, overacquisition of domestic pets, wildland connectivity loss, wetland loss (wolves survive in wetlands – they are habitat generalists – all they need are sufficient numbers of prey)), conservation science, native american and other groups with tolerant or welcoming views toward the Wolf.
3. Additionally, should you be in school, I hope you will study biology, ecology; if not in school, get some basic texts on these and learn, with the intent of helping the wolf, individual and species, survive. (I have a background in psychology, and also study animal behaviour, which has given some insight into human behaviour, which DOES NOT DIGRESS from that of other animals. I recommend that wherever your own interests or past is formed, that you begin there, with an eye to save the wolf from the humans of this present culture)
Wolves are killed at a hugely greater rate where road density exceeds one road 3/4 mile in length through a square mile of habitat. This is due to poaching and hunting. these people do not get far, but will use every dirt road to kill. The next highest cause of wolf mortality is traffic – humans killing wolves with motor vehicles.
Therefore you can begin to understand that ALL the groups supporting republicans, from land developers, private land grabbers mining logging, ranching interests, real estate agents, large businesses seeing financial advantage in human population increase, religions, and others you can itemise on your own, ALL are forces which will kill the Wolf.
I have no answer to your rather simplistic idea of rejection of one evil for another, comprising an even greater evil, other than to reject it.
I happen to vote Green, although that party has numerous flaws.
I almost constantly write to legislators, administrators, and others on wolf issues.
However, I can see by the nature of many of the comments that those commentors clearly do NOT.
If they did, they would have to write in terms that:
1. showed their desire to create a better vision, one of conservation of native species and unexploited land into the future.
2. Develop compromises with extant powers with the intent of using only, ONLY, nonlethal "management" methods of the wolf. These groups exist – Keystone Conservation, People and Carnivores, programs of Defenders of Wildlife (If you enter such an organisation, remember to voice your adamancy about any compromise that kills wolves or other carnivores), and several others.
3. Use biological and ecological findings to support their case.
4. Sound rational, rather than write hysterically, in all caps, etc., saying nothing.
You can write from the heart without appearing to be a candidate for the funny farm.
Nabeki, you MUST consider the necessity of Strategy, and operate with an encompassing resilient plan.
I have, in trying to be candid, written about strategies and methods which are not looked upon with favour by those in power. I have done so only in order to make you all aware that you are NOT powerless.
Get such falsehoods out of your heads –
It is because you DO have power, that you must invest it wisely as you can.
If you want to exert political influence, you must persuade (everyone around, in addition to those you petition) rather than immediately appear to abandon anyone who is in the business of compromise.
Politics IS compromise, and you will have to learn to deftly use it to your end:
You have seen in the past, that republicans act like some Eastern societies, using violent intransigent opposition, in order to move the rhetoric away from the hands and goals of others.

Look to Dr. Maureen Hackett and the work of Howling for Wolves in Minnesota, a state which although at present denies their values, has had the opinions of citizens significantly changed through their work.

Hi folks,
This week we put an end to the hard-fought battle to delist wolves in Montana and return them to state management. It’s a huge victory for Montana and a common-sense solution that will give certainty to our ranchers, farmers and hunters once and for all.
Since last August when District Court Judge Donald Molloy ruled to return gray wolves in Montana to Federal management, the wolf issue has come up time and time again in my talks with folks all across the state.
Montanans want this problem solved. No one, especially the federal government, knows how to better manage wolves than Montanans. We’ve proven it with a successful management plan and a successful wolf hunt. And that’s why, from the start, I vowed to resolve this issue for the people of our state and see it through to the end.
The science is clear: With over 1700 wolves in the Northern Rockies, wolves are a recovered species. Don’t just take my word for it; that’s what scientists at the Fish and Wildlife Service have determined. That’s why the Fish and Wildlife Service tried to remove Montana and Idaho’s wolves from the Endangered Species List back in 2009. The only problem was that without an approved management plan in Wyoming, the Fish and Wildlife Service couldn’t legally return wolves in Montana and Idaho to state management.
My plan cuts through the red tape. It restores Montana’s ability to manage wolves in a way that works for ranchers, hunters and wolves.
I’ve heard strong words of support from folks across the spectrum from the Montana Stockgrowers Association to the Montana Wildlife Federation.
Errol Rice, Executive Vice President of the Montana Stockgrowers Association, tells me pushing this legislation through to the finish line is a real win for Montana’s family ranches, and it ensures Montana ranchers have the necessary tools to protect their cattle from wolves.
And Tim Aldrich, Montana Wildlife Federation President, says this is great for Montana hunters and livestock producers. “For far too long we have been held hostage by litigation and political wrangling,” Tim says. “Wolves are recovered in our state. We have a science-based management plan, and Montana FWP is fully capable of responsibly managing wolves along with all the other wildlife that makes Montana the last, best place.”
That’s why, for months I’ve been strongly urging Senator Reid to include my wolf provision in the budget compromise to fund the federal government.
That’s just what he did. And yesterday, the President signed this into law. That means in 60 days, Montana will be rightfully back in control of our own wolf population.
I’m so proud we got this done. By working together, we found a common-sense, Montana solution to an issue that matters to the people of our state.

Boycott beef.
The industry has been usurped by Monsanto: GMO experimental animals, GMO alfalfa and grains (banned in most countries), an industry so cruel it had to enact the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), via ALEC lobbyists to prevent citizens knowing how animals are killed and tortured in slaughter houses.

Now with the drought ranchers are stealing from the government they “hate” for handouts on false wolf kills and demanding entire packs being killed even after receiving their welfare checks. The beef industry also pushed for a gigantic sale of pink slime for school lunches through USDA lobby plants in the administration, immediately after the company went bankrupt, to prevent any lawsuits from sick children. The beef industry is simply heinous on every level.
Boycott beef – remove your support of this anachronistic industry.

‘Epic Fail’ for the response to this awful turn of events.
With that being said, we need to oppose what’s going on by voting Obama out of office next year, in addition to the Senators and House members who voted for the bill. We need to only spend what we need to for the economy. Go to your library folks for reading books, watching movies, and listening to music. There are other ways to do stuff for free with materialism. Also you can hike, go on a walk, enjoy nature and it’s free. We must retake back America, for the Wolf!

So . . . what are we gonna do about this? Besides berating the Senators, I mean. Is there some positive step we can take to reverse the effects of this rider? I was thinking we could write to all of the pro-wolf orgs (particularly the four that didn’t sign off on the settlement, but even the others are worth a shot) and ask them to sue and have the rider overturned. The fact that it tries to insulate itself from judicial review means nothing. Under the constitution, no bill can do that. If someone sued they could ask for an injunction to stop any hunting while the judge reviews the case.
The second possibility is pushing for our own separate congressional bill, that would either repeal the rider, or protect wolves in such a way as to render delisting from the ESA irrelevant. I don’t think this is as good of an idea as the court challenge, because it can take a long time to get a bill through Congress, and they might start hunting wolves in as little as 60 days. But it could be something to think about as a backup.
A third possibility is . . . um . . . some sort of non-violent hunt sabotage . . . I am almost afraid to mention it, but for all I know it might not be illegal. Of course I have no idea how it would be organized and carried out.

CaptainSakonna…My thoughts are that if we could convince one or all the groups to sue, which they might already be considering, there is no guarantee that a judge would stop the hunts, as a matter of fact when the hunts started in 2009 Judge Molloy was asked to stop the hunts until the case was decided and he denied the injunction and the hunts went forward.
Trying to find a champion to reverse the rider in Congress would be very difficult because there is no political will there to help wolves. You saw that 81 Senators voted for that bill knowing full well wolves would be slaughtered. A stand alone bill could linger in Congress for years.
On the third possibility there are laws on the books that protect hunters. In other words you can’t interfere with hunting. People have been arrested under these laws and done jail time. It seems that while nobody was looking the hunters pretty much locked up our wildlife.
I think our best bet is a lawsuit challenging the rider. I’m not an attorney but the reason we have three branches of government is to stop this kind of thing from happening.
The haters were very clever doing it this way because I don’t think any of the anti-wolf bills would have passed. Running an end around the courts was the only way they could win this. It’s a very ugly, ugly win.
Everyone is raw right now and this is very hard to take. It will be even harder sixty days from now. A lawsuit would be the best way to go but I haven’t heard a peep out of any of the environmental groups about taking this on. I think our best bet is to write to the environmental groups and ask them to challenge the rider. It’s the only option we have right now. Either that or we just sit back and watch wolves slaughtered. They’re already planning the hunts.
Next week I’m going to speak to a few of the groups and see what they’re thinking, especially WWP, Alliance and Friends of the Clearwater. Also HSUS is another possibility.

Earth PAC
I agree that the .orgs need to consolidate and sue.
We need an Pro-Earth PAC. Since 2011 and the passage of Citizen United, the game is so different. The anti-environmental lobbys have so much ca$h and organization, it’s no longer effective to petition organization by organization.
A strong Earth-PAC could be able to focus experience, unify limited cash, and create a strong effective attorney pool. They could also
collectively FOIA state game/fish depts to find out where anti-wolf payoffs from corporations and their cover organizations were directed fiscally and email correspondence.
Kudos to Earth Justice and Center for Biological Diversity for aligning for the lawsuit against WY. They get my limited donation money.
International Pressure on US Administration
Writing to international papers requesting an investigative coverage on the dilemma might help. Send url’s for research. The US media is primarily restricted from war coverage to any dissent of the current administration.

There are many political prisoners now, and the Obama’s push to keep NDAA, DAA, deny Habius Corpus should be noted when one goes to the polls. I m writing in OR-7 by way of the Green Party.

The 19th Appelate Court denied it – I could not believe it – it was not even legal to have that bill attached at the last minute and everybody just signed away – I don’t think half of them knew what they were signing – so that opened the door – and now we are lost – we can’t go back unless Obama admits Animals do live and are not worthless – I feel he has no compassion for much of anything –

I have never posted here before, but I need some place to express my sorrow and despair. I have been working to protect the wolf and have healthy, wild populations since the early ’70s. I travelled the country with a group and a live wolf and lectured about the wolf’s true nature and behavior. Our group was very influential in passing the ESA. We generated thousands of letters from schoolchildren all over. I then spent the next 20 years working and lecturing to get wolves returned to Yellowstone. Idaho was just a bonus and Montana was colonized naturally by Canadian wolves in the late ’80s. I have always dreamed of wolves coming back to Colorado, but I don’t see that happening now. I wish Idaho had never been included in the reintroduction and I don’t understand how all these decades of wolf education by biologists and people like me has somehow missed Idaho and Montana. I never encountered the level of hatred there is now when I was lecturing. I have written my two senators here in Colorado, who say they are environmentalists, about how disappointed I am, but if you try to prevent President Obama from being re-elected, we may end up with Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, or some other Tea Party radical. We can kiss all wilderness and wildlife goodbye if that happens. Instead, there should be a campaign to replace Ken Salazar as Interior Secretary.

As for the up coming electons,it’s to soon to know who will run for the Repulican ticket.Sara Palin has slipped in the polls a few notches and Bachman is backed by the tea party.From what I gathered in the last few days the Speaker of the House was having trouble keeping the Repulicans in lined.We need to keep teaching people the truth about wolves and displace the myths.Even now,Washington and Oregon want wolves gone and they hardly have any. All of sudden ranchers are thinking that the cows are pets.I was told if I couldn’t clean a fish,don’t fish. Judy, I feel your despair and sadness. I too have been involved with the wolf issue for a long time. If I had known then what I know now I would never have wanted wolves reintroduced so they could be slaughtered. How we came to this so quickly is really Obama’s fault. We can’t put the blame solely on Ken Salazar because he was appointed by Obama. Obama was well aware of the deal that was brokered in Congress to sell wolves down the river and he signed off on it willingly. He’s just a terrible President, that’s the long and short of it. He delisted wolves just three months into his administration. He’s accomplished something that even Bush couldn’t, delisting wolves twice in two years. I don’t know what the answer is for the election, we literally have no good choices, I cannot bring myself to vote for Obama. He betrayed wolves twice.
It’s the extremes of the hunting and ranching lobbies that stirred up hatred for wolves. Up until wolves were delisted the haters were talking about other things. You would occasionally hear about wolves but once they were delisted the hate meter went off the charts. They anti-wolf crowd officially had their scapegoat and directed their hate and rage squarely at the wolf.
What just occurred in Congress is travesty of justice and it will go down in history as one of the most cold, calculated acts. And who do we blame for this? Democrats. How can any of us wrap our minds around that?
Now we have to get on with the business of figuring out how to help wolves. We don’t have a lot of time. Wolves don’t have time. The two states are chomping at the bit to have wolf hunts. I’m sure they are celebrating all over Montana and Idaho. I fear for wolves because they just don’t want to kill them they want to make them suffer.
It’s a horrific situation and right now we all have to put our heads together to come up with a way to help wolves or this will be the end of them in the Northern Rockies.

I’m sickened by what the Democrats did, but I agree with Judy Woods, when she says that if the Republicans take over the House and Senate, we will have no wildlife or wilderness left.
Rep. Denny Rehberg is the one who started this whole thing. Without him, Jon Tester would not have done what he did. Denny Rehberg needs to be held accountable for the fight that he started.
I also agree with others that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar needs to go.
One thing we can all do right now, is stop eating beef. Encourage friends, neighbors, family members, etc. There will be fewer problems with wolves if there is no demand for cattle.

I agree to remove support of the killing machine of the beef industry is useful. Also it is not a healthy food.
The industry has been usurped by Monsanto: GMO experimental animals, GMO alfalfa and grains (banned in most countries), an industry so cruel it had to enact the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), via ALEC lobbyists to prevent citizens knowing how animals are killed and tortured in slaughter houses.

Now with the drought ranchers are stealing from the government they “hate” for handouts on false wolf kills and demanding entire packs being killed even after receiving their welfare checks. The beef industry also pushed for a gigantic sale of pink slime for school lunches through USDA lobby plants in the administration, immediately after the company went bankrupt, to prevent any lawsuits from sick children. The beef industry is simply heinous on every level.

Thank you Nabeki for the list. Some names shock and sadden me, although a friend, then a US Senator, once told me that ALL members of congress were “nothing but prostitutes” for money and favors that would enhance their own careers. I supported Obama last time, assuming he would offer an improvement over the Bush-Cheney destruction of the environment; but now I will return campaign letters and e mails, explaining my reason. To me the wolf has its own huge significance, but I intend to tell “outsiders” that the wolf has also become symbolic of all that was once pure and natural in our country.
This begs the question of who else might show some sense; I don’t see any of the right stuff among the present front runners. And as long as Cheney’s influence is being felt (in the form of unregulated fracking) I am losing confidence in the salvation of our natural world, for us as well as our wolves. It will not be easy for us to put pressure on the politicians and their backers, but I believe that with your leadership we can progress.

You are right! Be very careful who you vote for and go after the 81.
We can’t poison them, shoot them, or trap them as they are doing to the wolves, but we can surely keep them from getting re-elected.
I am relatively sure that Max Baucus comes up for re-election next year, so we need to find out who is opposing him and where that person stands on the wolf issue. Max started out as a politician that was devoted to Montana and he wanted to protect its uniqueness and diversity. Like most of the politicians in Washington, he has been influenced by the lobbyists and special interest groups and he is blind to the needless slaughter that is going on in the Rocky Mountain States and how devastating it is to our ecosystem.
Remember, the real purpose for eliminating wolves and other wildlife in Montana and Idaho is to get control of our public lands and open them to oil exploration and land development.
It’s all about GREED and MONEY!! If we don’t stand up and fight to protect what we have, it will soon be gone.

I really appreciate everyone’s comments and support for the wolves. I have to say that I feel as sad and devistated by this massacre as the many folks who wrote in to share their grief. I want to thank this website and everyone who contributed to it to gather the information about the minions that made this massacre possible. Actually reading the list of these heartless individuals (I’m trying to be polite here but it’s really difficult) made my blood boil! I have decided not to vote for ANYONE who in any way supported slaughtering the wolves. If that means not voting then so be it.

After reading the list of who voted and how, I’m shocked to see that the two CA senators (I grew up there) voted for de-listing the wolf after coming across as being reasonably progressive on most other issues… but I was also amazed to see that one of my senators here in my current state, FL, voted against de-listing the wolf even though there are a handful of issues I have some issues with him on. I know I’ve e-mailed him a few times about wolf protections and only got the form reply but it’s good to see where he seems to stand at this point.
I guess it’s time for me to do some self-educating to try and increase our odds of a better outcome. As far as I can tell, it’s just one big puppet show out there gone bad… very bad.

I was against having the wolves reintroduced, not because I do not like wolves but because I read the history and I feared for their safety and their lives. Unfortunately, I feel that I was right. The killing goes on, and the hunters are not always satisfied with death–they seem to enjoy making the animals suffer. Just read the history–wolves blinded and turned loose, wolves with their jaws wired shut and turned loose, wolves pulled apart by horses. Humanities ugliness goes on, as usual, not only with wolves, but with every animal that can be hunted or used to turn a profit. Just as sickening in terms of suffering are the videos by Mercy for Animals and Compassion Over Killing of factory farms and slaughter houses, the investigations of Animals’ Angels investigations of animal transport. Yes, this is a site for wolves but the sadistic behavior of human beings towards them is a part of our overall deplorable history of human relationships with all the creatures we share this earth with.
Sometimes I wonder if all of us who are advocates for specific animals pooled our efforts for all if we would have big enough numbers to make more of a difference. So sad and so frustrating.
