It’s Not Over Until It’s Over and It’s Not Over….

The anti-wolfers are having themselves a grand ole time. They are chomping at the bit waiting for wolf hunts. What they don’t know or maybe fail to perceive is the delisting of gray wolves in the Northern Rockies has galvanized the grass-roots wolf advocacy movement.

The irony is for two years we’ve tried to get this story out of the Northern Rockies and were unable to do so. The same tired rhetoric was printed over and over in local newspapers.  The rallying cry of the anti-wolfers “Wolves Need To Be Managed” was a continual drumbeat. Just to remind everyone, manage is their code word for killing. It makes it all neat and tidy sounding. Slaughter doesn’t have the same ring.

The irony is out of this tragedy wolf advocates  have finally found their voice, they won’t be silenced anymore. Not only do wolves have supporters in this country but there are wolf advocates around the world. and they are speaking out.  New names pop up daily on this blog to express outrage over the dirty, rotten, disgusting way wolves were delisted in a budget bill, by Democrats no less.

Wolf advocates are so outraged they are mobilizing to defeat Jon Tester, who along with Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) inserted the wolf slaughter rider into a must pass appropriations bill.

Here is the infamous rider:

“Before the end of the 60-day period beginning on the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary of the Interior shall reissue the final rule published on April 2, 2009 (74 Fed. Reg. 15123 et seq.) without regard to any other provision of statute or regulation that applies to issuance of such rule. Such reissuance (including this section) shall not be subject to judicial review and shall not abrogate or otherwise have any effect on the order and judgment issued by the United States District Court for the District of Wyoming in Case Numbers 09-CV-118J and 09-CV-138J on November 18, 2010.”

Politicians who thought they were so clever slipping the rider into the budget underestimated the support wolves really have in this country. They’ve been listening to their hunting and ranching buddies too long. Hunters are a tiny group, just twelve million. Wildlife Waters outnumber hunters  more than six to one.

Americans love  wolves and want Congress to protect them, not kill them. I guess that was lost on the infamous 81 Senators who voted yes to wolf hunts.

We may not have the answer or answers yet, that will remove wolves from peril but the delisting has sparked a movement that is growing by the day. It’s bigger then Jon Tester or Mike Simpson. It’s bigger then the wolf haters and their lies.

It’s not over until it’s over and it’s not over!!!

Stay Tuned!!

    • Paula, warm greetings to you my sister. You are most correct. We are all connected, man and whale and wolf. I believe that worldwide many are coming to this realization.

As a society/world we have become so desensitized to life that it is only when we are forced to confront our circumstances that we begin to reclaim our tenacious spirit, binding us to one another and uniting us in a common goal.

Well, this situation has presented us with another common goal…animals were once seen as teachers, guides not only companions. Through the wolf’s plight we will come to remember our true priorities.

We still know the difference between right and wrong…although we may have forgotten that we can make a difference.

We will not allow brother wolf’s sacrifice to be in vain…we will be that change…we will make that difference.

    • I like the idea, Justin, and I would also love to see massive protests and demonstrations held here in Hamilton, MT, Helena, MT, and Boise ID, as well as DC.
I would love to go to a protest march and rally in DC if I had one of the fellow like-minds to provide me some transportation of getting there.
But to have one here in Hamilton, MT would be PERFECT!! 🙂

  5. No, it is not over until is over.

To say that I’m outraged by this travesty is an understatement. I have always known that politicians have no scruples whatsoever, but this time they have sunk to an all time low (and opened the Pandora’s box for the entire American wildlife in the process). Trading wolves for political gain really shows that the sky is the limit when it comes to pleasing your campaign donors/lobbyists/”buddies” in time for the upcoming elections.

Having said that, I agree with what your text says: the little men in the Congress might have shot themselves on the foot with their own political shenanigans. I’m pretty sure that most Americans do not support the delisting of the wolves (because they know that serious harm is coming in the wolves’ way) and do not support politicians fiddling with the ESA exclusively for a minority’s sake (because they know that other animal species will be targeted in the same way in the future). It is truly up to the American people to hold those responsible for this accountable.

For that to happen, obviously, information is the key. The recent attention given to the wolf delisting by the media has created the momentum for wolf/ wildlife advocates to speak out in America. It is a valuable chance to educate people about the importance of the wolf as a species and, consequently, bring justice and protection to an animal that has been vilified for far too long in history. This is why I posted the link to the Living with Wolves Foundation report (Wolves at a Crossroads¬: 2011 – The Endangered Species Act in Peril) in the Huffington Post today. I hope somebody out there will take the time to read that report and learn the actual facts about the wolves (instead of believing in some of the distorted rubbish perpetuated by the anti-wolf crowd).

Information is and always will be the key. With that in hand this story is far from over.

    • Wow, incredible fighting words vallondon. I echo their sentiment. Knowledge is power, and those who see this injustice for what it really is…don’t have to pump up lies or sow seeds of irrational fear just to suite their purpose.

Our esteemed elected officials retain stellar positions of pivotal authority coveted by many men, yet are consistently a matrix of mandates, misappropriations and malfeasance that too often navigates calamity, and manipulates the truth. Incompetence, arrogance as well as all the other wafting details of questionable ambiguity, unaccountability and amnesty. They do not fully realize the ripples of consequence they send spiraling outward.

As I said once before, politicians are in a race to the bottom just to show their own self importance. And this will backfire.

    • vallondon….They really thought they could just slip a rider into the budget bill and delist wolves without any push back, they were sorely mistaken. We need to keep the momentum going. Not only is this a fight over wolves but it’s a cultural war.

  6. This war ain’t over ’til the Fat Lady sings…
And Mama Cass hasn’t even started warmin’ up to do a song yet, ’cause she’s still waitin’ for Mama Michelle Phillips to go to Heaven, and it’s a long wait.
And thus, we have lots of time…..
But at the same time, the clock to Doomsday
is still ticking, and so we have a lot of work to do
in our efforts in keeping our wolves from the brink of extinction, even if we have to personally kick some redneck hunters’ butts and throw stones at them!

  7. Just over 48 hours and already 362 signatures. Lets keep that going and I now have some information and resources to get this petition sent to the proper people. I will print and mail this entire petition to the white house, my state reps and to the USFWS. If people are willing to do the same with their state reps I will provide a hard copy of the letter with the signatures for you to print and mail, fax, hand deliver, whatever you see fit. I may even start trying to set up meetings with my reps here in Montana to speak to these people face to face and let them know exactly how I fee.

  9. Terrence,
I would like to let you know how grateful I am for the updating of the “Targets” on the Petition. It has made a difference in people starting to sign, as I knew that it would – particularly with the 3 that you so rightfully chose !
One thing I wanted to ask , would y’all like the link to a Petition we have going to have Salazar removed from office ? Would be more than glad to share it with you. Let me know and I’ll paste the link on here. As with the wolves, we need all the signatures we can get to get Salazar removed from an office he should have never been appointed to in the first place.
Also , could I get a hard copy from you of the Petition so we could start sending to our Senators and Representatives ? I could forward to other Care2 members.
Thanks for all you are doing for the wolves !

  10. I am truly outraged about the sneaky underhanded way that this rider got into a budget bill and that our government betrayed all of us wolf lovers and most of all the betrayal of the wolves, They have no business saying that it is alright to kill any wildlife how shameful of them, I have emailed everyone of them and called my congress from Indiana to protest about this and have not heard a word from any of them, I guess they just think that we will forget about this but have I got news for them I will keep fighting for our wolves as I know the rest of you all will, We are Howling for Justice and will keep howling for as long as it takes to win this battle.

    • Yes Mary….we have to keep fighting no matter what they throw at us. Wolves have the right to live and raise their pups, not hunted down and slaughtered for the ranching and hunting lobbies. Onward….
