    • Thank you everyone, if it wasn’t for you I would never have been able to do it. I have to admit I was a little more nervous this time for some reason but i think it’s because we had to jump around a little. I’m so glad the NASS numbers came out and we can show that wolves are doing absolutely nothing wrong, their puny little livestock depredations compared to the real culprit, respiratory illness which takes over a million cows a year. Heck vultures kill more cows then wolves.

I feel like howling so I will!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaoooooooooooooooo

  10. Nabeki, awesome interview. To the wolf advocates who live in idaho or montana, please attend these meetings on wolves. Ask these fish and game agencies why don’t they count the wolves that are killed each year by wildlife services as part of the wolf hunt and also, grill these people and tell them that it’s wrong to extend wolf hunts into the spring where wolves are denning and giving birth to wolf pups. The problem is these fish and game agencies only seem to listen to hunters, the ones who buy the tags to kill animals. They don’t seem to care about what the non-hunters who love watching wildlife have to say!!!

    • Thank you Jon. Unfortunately very few wolf advocates show up at these meetings because they feel intimidated by all the hostility from the antis. It’s been this way for years, way before wolves were even an issue. I do think it’s changing though, people are so fed up they are willing to put up with the grief if it means showing support for wolves.

  11. What if we hound them by fax and email too, for those who are not in the area? I’ll do it. I also found a very interesting link while researching the ESA tonight. It is from Living With Wolves and it is a very interesting read, haven’t even gone through all of it yet, it’s a virtual smorgasbord of facts. It’s all there, the wolf’s story , with a timeline that begins in 1870,when the first wolf bounties began, though January 2011 when the threat of a delisting rider was mentioned. Including a conversation with Otter.

But what is even more interesting is the list of Honorary Board ( Robert Redford is listed)and Board of Directors. Where were they when all this was going on? Can we not appeal to them, maybe there is something that they can do to help or at least counsel us in a forward direction. They must have some clout, advice,or tricks up their sleeves.

What is also of interest are the events between 1935 to 1968 when “park rangers find it necessary to shoot and export elk and other prey species to combat overpopulation.” Made me think… is there any way we can have wolves exported to any areas in need of the wolf’s expertise in bringing dire balance to their eco system… instead of killing them? This would only be a temporary fix, but it may also be an option to give us more time. Today I also received a petition in an email asking Senators Udall & Bennet to bring back wolves to Colorado. In fact, it was from Wild Earth Guardians.

This may or may not have any merit. Just throwing it all out there, hoping somewhere there is something to be gleaned and maybe put together any possible missing pieces.

    • “Wolves at a Crossroads 2011” is a very well written and comprehensive report. According to Ralph Maughan’s blog at the time, a copy of this report was delivered to each member of the Congress prior their voting on delisting the wolves from the ESA. Unfortunately, as we know, politics prevailed over both science and common sense and the wolves are now paying the price for it.

This is an extract from the report (page 14): “…And while the trends of wildlife viewing are increasing, the percentage of Americans who actively hunt has been steadily decreasing over the years and decades. Current estimates are that 6% of Americans hunt. And it is for that mere 6%, and for the powerful special interests groups that represent them, that America’s wildlife has been managed…”

I find absolutely outrageous that the wildlife in America is treated as if it were a mere commodity or the property of a minority able to do as they please. This is disastrous as these people not only mean harm to these animals, but will also ignore any scientific facts that might be in the way of their agenda/profits, potentially causing a lot of damage to the ecosystems they are interfering with.

Also, in case you haven’t watched it yet, the documentary “Living with wolves” by Jim and Jamie Dutcher is available in YouTube. The link for the first part is below:

  12. Also thought it was a strange twist of fate that “the Park Service has been bringing in sharpshooters to target elk for doing what comes naturally in the absence of wolves.” While Idaho is attempting to use outfitters and their guides in targeting wolves to protect elk. Idaho doesn’t want the wolves anyway, and I am no expert on reintroduction costs compared to the budget Idaho had put aside for wolf “management”, but hey, what is wrong with this picture and what do both situations have in common….jagged reasoning and Park/Wildlife Services.

    • WL….one of the national parks having a problem with elk overbrowsing had the hair-brained idea to bring in neutered wolves with shock collars so they don’t wander. It’s so ridiculous, why won’t they let wolves do their jobs???

  13. Nabeki, I have been researching and came across this link that may help our campaign to spread awareness and help to counter the assault on our wolves.

To bring certain things to your immediate attention: Check out “What’s Happening” section, resources and also their credible list of partners. And since we are noticing a parallel between Alaska and Idaho, there is also a conservation archive with an article from 2008 about a photographer team who fights aerial wolf hunting in Alaska, Dorothy Keeler has contact info in Montana. Maybe they have a few ideas they could suggest to bring awareness to this aerial gunning & wolf “management.”

This link is a very pungent excerpt taken from the book: ” Ammo, Who Runs US Wildlife Policy?”

    • Thank you,Wolf’s Lament, for the info.Nabeki, shock collars on wolves. It doesn’t work on some dogs. Where do they come up with these ideas, out of a craker jack box?It is just as bad as one state thinking that by sterilizing the elk,it would help reduce their numbers. How about their natural predator, the wolf.We won’t be using the tax payer’s money on the reduction of the elk by sterilizaton or any other crazy idea. We have millons of dogs and cats that need to be sterilized and they are talking about elk? Frankly, they really dont’t know or don’t care to know what the effects of the killing of the Alpha pairs does to the structure of the pack, esecially on the young wolves that are learning how to hunt and what to hunt .There are to many unknowns and it is not the time to be making rash descions and not well thought out objectives.

      • Rita….it seems they give very little thought to what their “management” does to wolves or their social structure. It’s a wolf is a wolf is a wolf. That’s about it. Very, very sad.

  14. I hope the interview went well. It is a shame that I could not listen to it live due to the time difference. Will the interview be available on the radio station’s website this time??

Changing the subject a bit… The link below is for an article published today by The Guardian newspaper over here in the UK. It is about Bob Hansen’s Wild Coast Project in Canada studying the interactions between humans and predators (wolves and cougars in this case) and the influence that humans have in the behaviour of animal species.

    • Thank you Vallondon, for sharing. Very important message for all of us in this article. In the aggregate,we are all trying to fill a void, we just aren’t always aware of what it is. Steeped in denial and obscured by illusion, through various forms of distractions and diversions we are “entertained”, yet unfulfilled. Unfortunately television is the dominant umbilical which prompts the attitudes that shape our world, filled with advertisements and empty promises. If we all took that first step by turning off the TV for one entire day every week, and build up from there, we will discover many more beneficial ways to reawaken our true priorities, while regaining our friendship with Nature, where our salvation will always be found.

Thank you for sharing that amazing article. I was especially moved by this paragraph:

“Last month, Bolivia announced that it will enshrine the fundamental rights of nature in law. In Bolivian law all natural entities – plant or animal, river or mountain – will enjoy equal rights to those of humans, including the right to life or to exist, the right not to be polluted and the right not to be genetically altered. Ecuador enacted similar, though less specific, legislation in 2008. And last month, the Cambodian prime minister retracted his previous approval for a new titanium mine, reportedly worth billions of dollars, in favour of environmental values.”

Why can’t we as a nation embrace those values? What a beautiful, wonderful sentiment Bolivia.
