Friends Of Animals Petitions Court To Join Lawsuit Challenging Wolf Delisting Rider…

This is terrific news!! With Friends of Animals joining the lawsuit there will be four highly respected conservation groups going to bat for wolves.  If you noticed The Safari Club,  NRA and Montana Farm Bureau have also asked to intervene in the wolf delisting lawsuit for the other side.

Friends of Animals, a staunch supporter of animal rights, has filed a motion in Montana District Court to join the lawsuit brought by Alliance for the Wild Rockies, Friends of the Clearwater and WildEarth Guardians, that challenges the constitutionality of the wolf delisting rider. The rider was slipped into a must-pass budget bill by Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) . 81 Senators then voted yes to delist wolves in a budget bill. Only three Democrats voted against it: Leahy, Levin and Wyden. Bernie Sanders of VT, an Independent, also voted no. President Obama signed the bill into law, which is no surprise since his administration has now delisted wolves twice and he hasn’t even completed his first term.  We can’t blame the Republicans for everything.

Here’s the press release Friends of Animals posted on their website:

Friends of Animals Challenges Unconstitutional Wolf Delisting Rider

May 27, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 27 May 2011

Contact: Dustin Rhodes
Phone: (202) 906-0210

Darien, Connecticut—Friends of Animals filed a Motion to Intervene in the case Alliance for the Wild Rockies v. Salazar, which challenges the constitutionality of Section 1713 of the Department of Defense and Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011, P.L. 112-10 (also called the “budget rider” or the “wolf rider”). The budget rider directed the USFWS to reinstate the 2007 wolf delisting rule, which removed gray wolves in all areas of the Northern Rocky Mountains Distinct Population Segment (DPS) from protection under the Endangered Species Act. The original complaint was filed by Alliance for the Wild Rockies, Friends of the Clearwater and WildEarth Guardians on May 5, 2011 and the case was recently consolidated with another case, Center for Biological Diversity v. Salzar. The complaints challenge constitutionality of this legislative enactment.

Friends of Animals’ president Priscilla Feral says,

We must do everything in our power to undo the deadly disservice that was done to gray wolves; taking them off of the Endangered Species List was not only unethical and unjust—it was unconstitutional.

The wolf delisting rider, which was included in the 2011 federal budget, was sponsored by Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., and Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, and was passed with a bipartisan vote of 81-19 on April 14, 2011.

I am opposed to all murder of wolves from the air + shooting at it, too, regardless whether it has cubs in the cave, I see this as a new version of a surge of big EGO, which I despise as plague, leave my friend alone. the wolf. Is such a good ecosystem in this world , where the wolf lives, who thrives woods and plains, 1-10 hunting hat wolf deserved, it is hard for the chasing, where people go in subermarked. stop all hunting of wolves, it has not deserved in this nasty ego world, period. greeting Vibeke Hansen, denmark

  4. The more the better – let’s hope the united front will get this sneak maneuver stopped – hopefully forever – it was underhanded and should have never been added as a rider – those people need to learn that they have to abide the law like everyone else.

I think the hate Wolves to the point of obsession – in their idiotic mind they just have to be killed – all of them.

I see a glimmer of hope here – maybe – but I sure wish with all my heart the Wolves will win and get back on the list.

  8. We stand with all of you, and expect to hear something from Judge Molloy Tuesday about intervenor
status and perhaps more. We hired a terrific Montana
lawyer to assist us and have an attorney in Alaska who has filed all our wolf lawsuits there working
with the other attorney, so it’s full steam ahead.
No way can Friends of Animals stand to sit on the sidelines while this crucial legal challenge goes forward.

We heard Idaho’s Gov. Butch Otter is also intervening. He’s a maniac, and the whole lot of them need a setback.

Thanks, everyone, for kind words, good spirit and for cheering us on to defend wolves. Always.

    • Thank you so much Priscilla. Your organization is a staunch defender of animal rights and I would expect nothing less of Friends of Animals then to stand with wolves in this crucial time. Every day there is a new horror story about the upcoming hunts. The latest word is there will be no quota for the Idaho hunt. As it stands now that is only rumor but we are trying to confirm it. I fear for the wolves and grass roots wolf advocates are so relieved to see this legal challenge to the unconstitutional wolf delisting rider.

Thank you again and we will be watching this play out as it’s shaping up to be another battle for wolves lives.

We are not going to desert our wolves and accept what has been so wrongfully done to them. We will not; and our voices are only growing stronger each day. Thank you again Friends for standing with us!

  10. Nabeki, I don’t really watch television anymore, only by default as in this scenario. A few weeks ago I was visiting a friend and she was tuned in to CNN and Jane Valez Mitchell was on. She brings attention to much needed issues and I was very impressed with her voice against the injustice inflicted on animals. My friend and I both looked at one another and said…hey…here’s a chance to speak out for the wolves.

So I have been working on a letter to Jane about the seriousness of the wolf’s situation, and see that Friends of Animals have recently taken the issue of wild horses and burros to her studio, which is yet another terrible crime against nature. Unfortunately, I missed the interview scheduled for last Friday May 27th. Would Friends of Animals also be willing to do the same for our wolves? It would be especially pungent to have this take place during the court hearings….but anytime is a good time to speak out.

That is why I asked you if you were camera shy.

  11. Unfortunately, some humans don’t understand they aren’t a “super-specie”. I can’t stand seeing more bills and propositions about “killing animals because they’re overpopulated”. There are no species as overpopulated as humans. Respect is not in politicians’s vocabulary. I see petitions against cruelty and killing for years and I feel it’s getting worst and worst. I feel so bad seeing wolves being killed just because of some men thinking “They can take decisions for nature and wildlife”. Nature came before us and will certainly be there after us… We’re destroying our best gift, our best chance : a magnificent world where diversity means health and future.

  13. I just returned from viewing wolves in the wild in Montana and Idaho. I never realized how beautiful these animals are and how peaceful;not the predators that wolf-haters try to present at all. Today I thank God for this website/blog and for the people commenting on it. Maybe it exists so that wolves can continue to exist as well in our wildlife. I truly hope that we all can succeed in stopping the corrupt agencies that are gunning down these beautiful creatures in cold blood.

  14. This is great everyone is coming together to protect the beautiful wolf, They are sure to win now. Now all we have to do is make sure Sarah Palin does not become President she loves killing wolves. She would pull newborn wolf pups out of their den and shoot them. And she even was doing aerial attacks on them.

    • Valerie, just a few days ago, the illustrious ex.governor of Alaska made her token stop not too far away from me in my home state, then followed by George W, the next day. I was joking with my mother and said don’t breathe the air, since there is a lingering stench about it. One thing I do give her credit for, actually, it would be her publicist, she knows how to get attention. If Ms. Palin can get attention from her little escapade on wheels, since she also rode a motorcycle for effect, why not have our own little “Bikers For Wolves” with posters or signs on their bikes saying: “Save the American Gray Wolf”….or promote Nabeki’s “Howl Across America.” This would also be a great way to spread the word and so easy. Anyway, I’m not talking about Hell’s Angels, many states have biker clubs, who are also very into special causes. There was just a “ride” for diabetes here. What if we all tried to contact our own and see if we can get them to join us. That would certainly help to boost the crowd in Washington…and across the nation.

      What do you think Nabeki…?

We also don’t want Mr. Romney for president. This little quip from Mr. Don Peay concerning wolf delisting: “In a few hours I have breakfast with Fmr Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. I spent a couple fun days in December hunting elk with him in Western Montana, it will interesting to see what he thinks about this bold move in leadership.”

Fun days… We don’t need any more “fun” or another incestuous relationship in Washington.

  15. The Safari Club is nothing but an elitist hunt club. They dumped $400,000 in Alaska, when the 3rd referendum came up on hunting wolves. The people of Alaska knew what damage that would do to the state. Palin is a maniac and was really behind all that. Safari also gave $100,000 to Montana politics in order to fast forward hunting there.

    • Bobette….so true. The Safari Club wants to intervene in the current lawsuit and I believe they were also involved in the original delisting lawsuit. They seem to have their tentacles everywhere concerning the ESA, trying to weaken it.

    • $100.000, you have got to be kidding, that would be ludicrous if it weren’t a crime. You said Montana politics…anyone in particular or just the entire hapless crew? My boyfriend always refers to the two party system as “buy-partisans” If we could afford to throw money like this at them to protect the wolf, they would turn about mighty quick. It’s amazing the power of affluence…isn’t it?
