Finally the wolves’ story has been told with eloquence and raw truth. Bill Gibson, reporter for Earth Island Journal, pulls no punches. He tells it like it is, exposing the myths and down right lies told about wolves, tracing their sad journey from the 2009 delisting, by the Obama administration, to where they are today in 2011. Stripped of their ESA protections, facing brutal wolf hunts in Idaho and Montana, including baiting, calling, trapping, archery, leg hold traps and snares.
He explains the virulence of the anti-wolf movement and how wolves became the poster child for anti-government feelings.
I want to personally thank Bill Gibson and Earth Island Journal for having the courage of their convictions to tell this tale. I hope it opens the eyes of wildlife advocates across this nation and moves them to stand up for wolves in their dark hour.
There is still time to make a difference for wolves. I’ve always said that if the American people knew the truth, of what was happening in the Northern Rockies, they would be outraged and demand the end of the brutal persecution of wolves. I hope I’m right.

It’s 5am on yet another sleepless night and I am physically and emotionally drained with everything that is going on in my personal life, but seeing this has brought a glimmer of light back to me. I really wish I could afford to subscribe and support this journal but at the moment it is not possible. To know there are people out there that really do care about this issue and are willing to make a stand is something that will keep me going. I just wish I could do more to support this cause right now and I feel I’m getting lost in the negative rhetoric from the anti-crowd.

It was such an exciting day when we brought the Wolf back – and even in the first three days there were problems – the Government changed their minds and two or three of them died in their cages – never even having seen their new World – and now it has gotten to the worst possible way of life for them that it could be. I do not understand this hate for this beautiful animal that acts very human with Family and Children – it is benign and will not attack you and just wants to be left alone. And here we are – worrying crying, signing one petition after another and the Service that is supposed to protect them is killing them. Is that some kind of joke? Was that ever supposed to happen? I am sure we all thought now that they are here, they will have little once and the Ecology will be balanced and we can hear these soulful animals sing.
I have looked in the eyes of a Wolf – and I saw his Soul and he saw mine – and there was nothing but sadness in both of us – he put his head in my lap (this was in a Sanctuary) and all I could hope for is that he would live a good and fairly decent life in the small space allowed them way back then. Now they have more space and more Wolves – and I wish we could take them all in somewhere where they are safe so no Idiot can kill them or their pups.
For the past two years they way we have hounded them and killed them I have had to ask myself – was it a good decision to bring them back? Did we do it because we loved them and wanted them here? Why did we bring them here under the cloud that was building even then –
And now — did we bring them here to be sacrificed because of a couple of States that really should not even be asked because they believe in old Wives’ tales and Legends. They need to find the truth – and the most important thing is to live and let live –
My heart bleeds for these Animals – and I hope the World listens when we tell the truth.

I had noticed the beauty in the eye of the wolf on the picture of Earth Island’s Journal. A soulful sphere reminiscent of an otherworldly place unto itself. It’s remarkable that such a magnificent animal can evoke such a wealth of reflection and empathy. I have always believed that that’s why animals were put here upon the earth, so that humans could come to understand the nascent compassion within our inner depths, while embracing our own humanity. Very possibly it’s what others loathe most when they look into a wolf’s eyes…they see their soul,or lack thereof, and they don’t like what they see.
I have not slept a single night since this entire ordeal began without a restlessness that consumes me. My mind churning, full of what if’s… how to’s…and why’s. It’s all so utterly tragic….so unfair. In honesty your words brought tears to my eyes…thank you for that connection.

I am new to this website and have a question. There is a list of wolf-killers by name on one of the pages. Have these people been contacted and emailed about what they are doing? I found some horribly upsetting photos on another site showing some of the people listed posing with their dead wolves in “boasting” pictures. No creature, let alone wolves, should be treated with such disrespect as these photos show. I have located some of the people in the photos and have been emailing them, all within the law and an attorney’s approval, of course. These people should know they are being seen doing these cruel, cruel acts, don’t you think?

Gretchen….I posted the names after the Montana hunts were over. As much as you’d like to write to anyone on that list, I don’t recommend it. It’s there for purely informational purposes, because it is public record.
As for the wolf hunting sites, I am very aware of them. They seem to revel in those pictures. There always seems to be a sick little smile on their faces as they pose over their victims. There is much worse out there even. That’s why I don’t understand how USFWS worked so hard to delist wolves when they knew the toxic climate wolves face. Wolves should never have been removed from the ESA. They need it’s protection otherwise there is going to be a blood bath and hundreds of wolves will die. This situation is playing out the way it did the first time wolves were exterminated in the West.

An excellent, excellent article Nabeki. Even better than I had dreamed. Thank you again for your bravery and your love of our wolves, and for constantly trying to educate people, so very, very many that are so ill-informed. Is it not ironic how President Obama, by allowing Section 1713 to remain in the budget bill, has only inflamed the right wing hysteria he supposedly is fighting?

Rhonda….yes Bill did a wonderful job and I really hope this will wake people up so they realize what is going on here. This is the boost we needed, if only we can get a major celeb to take up the cause. I think this would be the time to start writing to them again asking for help.
They are going full steam ahead with plans for the wolf hunts. I’ve been hearing there won’t be a quota in Idaho. That’s the scariest thing I’ve heard. I’ve also heard there will be multiple tags. Of course I haven’t been able to verify any of this but I hope to soon.
Obama is the biggest failure. Who knew he would appoint a rancher to the Interior? He’s actually worse the George Bush because he has delisted wolves twice now, as you said and his first term isn’t even over. I will never vote for another Democrat again as long as I live. That display in the Senate was truly the worst I’ve seen in politics.

Nabeki, I will be calling Earth Island Institute’s main office to order several issues of this journal, and if necessary, distribute them to strategic places for optimum access. I also called my local Borders to see of they carry Earth Island Journal,they do not, and so I spoke with customer service and put in a request for them to do so. Like Rhonda had also asked, I am also looking for a PDF to print this article out and send it to several influential people.

Thank you, Nabeki, for your courage and determination to bring justice to the Gray Wolf and thank you to Bill Gibson and the Earth Island Journal for putting the current wolf crisis in the spotlight. We certainly need more articles such as this in the media not only to educate people about the threats against the wolves and their outrageous removal from the ESA by little self-important politicians, but also to highlight the unacceptable intimidation that wolf advocates receive from the anti-wolves-and-everything-that-moves mob.

How many times have we had to read the bland reporting about wolves that only mention if they killed a cow or had tapeworms (which all canines can carry, mainly dogs). It was so refreshing to read the real story and the nexus of how this pogrom against the wolf got started.

Like gravity, truth will not be denied, and I am here to celebrate that truth, not convince obstinence to listen to reason. Oppression and intimidation have had their reign, resulting in the delisting of the gray wolf with such casual disregard, business as usual. Those who loathe the wolf, for whatever reason, view this injustice as a victory, when in truth their bias is actually contributing to the collapse of an entire eco system, all for the sake of instant gratification. I have read comments on blogs commending this act as a “bold move leadership” boasts of taking notes, writing a book , even “a Harvard case study on how to do something most said couldn’t be done.”…such arrogance can not be rivaled. Yet the one comment lingering in the back of my mind since a wolf delisting rider was first initiated said it all, and it was this verbatim: “Environmentalist wanted a range war, now they have it.” There it was , in a nutshell, like dialogue from an old western movie, but eerily different, it was a war, real life with malicious intent, and I knew it was not going to turn out well for the wolf. May Cry Wolf be the impetus for a new era of enlightenment that will overshadow fear mongers and intimidation wranglers who have for too long shackled the wolf in both body and spirit. As for Mr. Bridges and his ilk, when have they ever done anything but “fight dirty“? I am not only ashamed of my human connections to this segment of society, but also of our government who had been complacent in this issue, either abusing their power or coddling powerful lobbies, instead of upholding a much needed integrity Their refusal to do the right thing, for all the right reasons has only emboldened a pervasive stranglehold that already has far too much control. Regardless of whatever Congress has mandated, the Wolf will continue to be endangered as long a there is a persistent reckless concern for his survival.
During a time when our own American media has failed us miserably, and continues to do so,
my sincere heartfelt gratitude to Bill Gibson and Earth Island Journal for speaking out with indomitable spirit and impeccable truth…and Nabeki, you are truly Wolf. Blessings to you all.

Beautifully stated WL, as always. I too hope Bill’s article will alert people that a culture war is going on in the Northern Rockies and wolves have become the poster child for anti-government feelings. We need help fighting Wolf Wars, we’re a rag tag collection of wolf advocates who are out numbered but doing our best to stand up for wolves in a hostile climate. We’d love some help here. Bill and Earth Island Journal have provided an opening for people outside this area to become involved. Wolves don’t belong to just Idaho and Montana, they are a national treasure for all Americans. It’s not fair that a few hunting and ranching groups can get together and pull off a coupe to wipe out a large segment of the wolf population in the Northern Rockies. We could lose the vast majority of our wolves and when they’re gone they’re gone.

I just want you to know that I am a strong advocate for your cause and everyone else’s cause regarding the saving of wolves. But throughout many of these posts, runs the theme that the people out to kill these animals are all conservative or Republican. This is just not so. I am both conservative and Republican and yet, strongly in agreement with your cause. I just don’t want you to lose other supporters to this much needed cause by turning the blame on one particular group or stereotype when this is not the case. There are people who love these animals that are in both groups; conservative and liberal and Republican and Democrat. As we have seen lately, there are also those that hate these beautiful creatures on both sides. We need to stand together for these animals. I just don’t want anyone turned off by groups that will help these wolves because they feel they belong to the wrong “party” or are going to be insulted for beliefs that don’t apply to this cause.

Hi Gretchen — welcome to our little group, I’m glad you’re here. I’m a conservative too, but find that I frequently diverge from other conservatives when it comes to animal issues. It makes me feel like sort of a loner who is caught between two camps, and doesn’t quite feel at home in either. I know of a few other conservatives who care about wolves, and am always pleased to find another.
In my experience, Nabeki has been pretty good when it comes to admitting Democrats’ shortcomings on the wolf issue, and not laying excess blame on Republicans. But it’s true that many wolf advocates associate the anti-wolf mentality with the “right wing.” I don’t know if this is completely unjustified; somehow, wolves have gotten tangled up with issues of states’ rights, local autonomy, gun rights, etc., which are primarily of interest to conservatives. The NRA, an organization deeply associated with conservatives and Republicans, has come out in support of the wolf delisting rider (as well as coyote penning in Indiana, supposedly — ick). Conservatism also tends to be more predominant in rural areas and among the ranching and hunting community, which are the places and groups of people for which wolves cause the most “problems.” And, much as I hate to admit it, I think conservatism may have some cultural baggage which encourages a view of animals primarily as man’s servants and resources, rather than his friends. At the end of the day, people like you and I have a long row to hoe to hopefully start correcting these problems from within.
That said, of course there are exceptions to the stereotypes, even if those stereotypes are justified, and we all need to work together no matter what “side of the aisle” we are from. And one thing that is important for wolf advocates to remember is that, while a lack of concern for animals may sometimes end up “riding along” with conservatism, I wouldn’t call it one of conservatism’s core values. Personally I think it is quite possible to be a bona fide conservative and love wolves.
A few months ago, I became Facebook friends with a different pro-wolf organization (I won’t name names). This org didn’t limit itself to talking about wolves, and eventually made a post in support of legalized abortion for rape/incest victims. I politely disagreed and we got into an argument about it. Once our debate ended, I would have been fine to let it go and keep working with this group to help wolves; but apparently, the guy on the other end went away mad. I was dropped from the friends list and blocked. So now I can’t contact this group via Facebook or see any of their posts. That kind of infighting does NOT help wolves!
Of course, the other side is just as bad when it comes to stereotyping and making assumptions. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen people saying that everyone/almost everyone who advocates for wolves is a liberal city-dweller from California or the East Coast, and therefore completely ignorant about Northern Rockies issues and unqualified to give opinions. (Personally, I think that not having a personal financial and/or recreational interest in the wolf situation might be just as likely to make dwellers in far-flung cities more objective, but try telling them that and you probably won’t get very far.)

There are plenty of people who live in the northern rockies and want wolves. There is only 2 groups of people that don’t want wolves and we know who they are. Hunters and ranchers.

I would venture to say Jon that most Americans support wolves, In fact there was a recent, well respected poll that showed Americans staunchly supported wolves and the ESA. The ranching and hunting lobbies were only able to pull off this stunt, of delisting wolves by rider, because they have a friend in the Interior. I have to say that Obama is a such a terrific disappointment. He signed the budget bill into law, with the wolf rider intact.

Please believe me when I say I do believe there are good people on both sides of the political spectrum, excluding insiders in Washington. I welcome any and all wolf advocates from whatever party or affiliation. After all it was Richard Nixon who signed the ESA into law and the Democrats who just delisted wolves and weakened the ESA. We are all working toward the same goal, to protect wolves and to allow them to play their vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Please have patience with your technically challenged fb friend, Linda Camac, that would be me! I want to spread the article far and wide but can’t even see it! I am having technical difficulties with my computer anyway.
I do know that when the budgets were made on April 9th, in the 11th hour, and wolves were thrown under the bus and the ESA weakened – the national news networks said nothing of this; at least that I heard, YET they talked and examined to the point of sheer nauseum every, other little budget cut – my point here is that I am sure that MOST Americans don’t know the current plight of the wolf. I am disillusioned with politics and the media.
If most Americans don’t know, and won’t find out this will all silently slip into law.
I work in a very high end consignment shop, very part time and every person that has engaged me in conversation, is very surprised to hear that the wolves have been delisted. They all live in the best part of town as far as being financially affluent, and pride themselves for being “up on current events’ and yet, they hadn’t heard about the wolf delisting at all!
Is there a deliberate silent conspiracy with the media?
Secondly, I am attending the Wolf Rally in D.C. scheduled for 8/12, have volunteered to ‘speak’ – if any one wants to contribute key thoughts and ideas (Nabeki), I am listening!
In addition, I hope to hand carry with me a HUGE PETITION to the Whitehouse with all of the undersigned requesting that WOLVES BE PUT BACK ON THE ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST AND REMAIN THERE PERMANENTLY, AS THE STATES CANNOT BE ENTRUSTED WITH ‘WOLF MANAGEMENT’!!
I live in Pennsylvania, and the last free wolf in Pennsylvania disappeared over 200 years ago. The full moon in Pennsylvania has been a lonely, sad reminder that we no longer have this great animal among us. Also when you remove a natural apex predator from any region, there is bound to be IMBALANCE. It is very true in Pennsylvania where, despite, excessive hunting by two-legged hunters – we have an exploding deer population, which kills many people every year via car/deer accidents. So it’s not working for you, Mr. Two-Legged Hunter! It’s not working for us, and it’s certainly not working for the wolves. It’s not nice to try to fool Mother Nature by removing her assigned predator to a whole region.
Thoughts on the petition? Many howls!

Linda, I totally agree about a conspiracy in the media, but they must march to the tune of their corporate paymasters, and so who knows? During the entire desisting ordeal I had been in constant contact with my local newspaper and television stations. In fact, I just sent them the link to Cry Wolf, just to shame them. I expressed my disappointment and told them I was so grateful that someone was willing to do the right thing, since our American media has failed us miserably, and continues to do so. I usually try to find a way to bring the delisting up in conversation, even when I’m at the grocery store, and like you said, they are always surprised.
I can see the headlines now “Linda Carmac Goes To Washington.” Go get em’ Linda…. Washington will never be the same my friend!!! Smiles. We are basically neighbors. I didn’t know if you saw my comment asking if you could get in touch with me, it’s a generic email via my gravatr.

Thank you Justin for posting the link to CASH. I visit the site often, it has eye opening information about sport hunting and it’s cruelty. They also report on the dangers of hunting and the deadly hunting accidents that claim the lives of innocent people every year. It’s estimated almost a hundred people die every year in the US and Canada from hunting accidents yet they blame wolves who have killed nobody in the lower forty eight in over a hundred years. How hypocritical can you get??
