“Dead Wolves Walking” by James William Gibson

I broke down and cried like a baby reading this article. The situation is just so sad, especially when it’s laid out in black and white.

I want to thank Bill Gibson and Earth Island Journal for giving this story legs and keeping it real.

My wish is Howl Across America will move people out from behind their computers to protest the brutal treatment that is awaiting wolves in the Northern Rockies.  BUT if  Judge Molloy finds the wolf delisting rider unconstitutional,  it will put a stop to this horror.  His decision should come quickly, since he is retiring to Senior status in August.

This is playing out like a Greek tragedy. And to think this all happened because a Democrat president appointed a rancher to head the Interior.  What a disgrace!!

Wolf Hunts Scheduled in Idaho & Montana Unless Federal Judge Intervenes

Since April, when Congress removed gray wolves in Idaho and Montana from the protection of the Endangered Species Act by inserting a rider in a federal budget bill, state governments have been racing to prepare for wolf hunts this fall. (Read Gibson’s compelling report,  “Cry Wolf ” on the issue in the Journal’s Summer 2011 edition.)

So far, Idaho’s winning the race. In early July, the state’s fish and game director Virgil Moore announced a full seven-month hunting season — from the end of August to the end of March. Hunters can use any weapon they choose, utilize electronic calls to lure wolves within range, and kill two each.

  1. A correction – IDFG’s proposal is that wolf hunters get FOUR tags for the 7-month hunt (two per calendar year). Trappers get TEN: three for trapping in 2011 & three in 2012 plus the two regular tags they can have in each of those years. IDFG has intentionally been hiding these facts because they don’t want people to mention it in their comments.

    • That is even more horrific. Of course the hunt goes through 2011 and 2012..so they think they’re clever. It wasn’t bad enough that hunters can kill 2 wolves each and trappers five but it’s actually double that? I think I’m going to be sick.

  3. Very good article indeed and thanks to James Gibson and the Earth Island Journal for putting the wolves and Howl Across America in the spotlight.

The comment by Virgil Moore – IDFG ( ”…We will get at them whether the hunting season is open or not…”) says it all. It is shameful that these individuals are paid by the American people to exterminate wildlife on behalf of a minority. His comment is a stark reminder that without the full protection of the law, the wolves will be absolute defenceless against an extermination campaign.

The logic behind the plaintiffs claim in court seems to make sense to me: the politicians have indeed bulldozed their way in the middle of an ongoing litigation in a Federal Court to get what they wanted. Unfortunately, we all have to wait and see how Judge Molloy will interpret that. His decision will not only decide the wolves’ destiny, but it also might influence future cases involving the use of riders to remove vulnerable species from the ESA.

Also, can I ask if there will be a petition set up for Howling Across America please?? I know that we all have signed countless petitions so far, but, in times like these, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to sign another one, would it? The Care2 or the Avaaz sites are always very popular places and the previous public support for the wolves was pretty high. Once again, let’s send the message to the politicians in DC that people have not forgotten the wolves or what was done against them back in April. This time they just might listen as the 2012 election approaches and every vote counts after all…

  4. Virgil Moore, Idaho Dept of Fish & Game, is an example of someone who apparently will do whatever he has to do, to keep his job, his retirement. And if that means Idaho kills 800 wolves in the next year, then so be it. Very disappointing as Moore was once looked to as someone that non-hunters, non-predator haters could talk to. Not any more. Or make that, not any Moore … .

  8. Wolves being killed by any weapon chosen is horrific, I personally like the image of wolves although would not like to get caught close up to a couple. If they are to be killed it should be by federal agents and done as humanely as possible.
