“9th Circuit won’t halt wolf hunting in Idaho, Montana”….

I’m too sad to comment.

===

From the Seattle Times

In a decision filed Thursday, the court denied the request by the Alliance for the Wild Rockies to cancel the hunts while the court considers a challenge to congressional action that stripped wolves of federal protections in Montana and Idaho, and in parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah.

By The Associated Press

HELENA, Mont. — A federal appeals court on Thursday denied a request by environmentalists for an emergency injunction to halt wolf hunts scheduled to start next week in Idaho and Montana.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals denied the request by the Alliance for the Wild Rockies seeking to cancel the hunts while the court considers a challenge to congressional action that stripped wolves of protections in Montana and Idaho, and in parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah.

Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy in Missoula reluctantly upheld a budget rider inserted by Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, and Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., to remove federal protection of wolves.

  2. this is a fair ruling though Idaho’s decision to not use a quota system and all so much trapping is not looking good. Not having quotas is disgusting. The reason for not having quotas is to hide the actual number if wolves that are being killed/”harvested”.

One good thing is that wolf tag sales are very low. Couple that with low success rates and I would think hunters won’t kill more than 250 or so. The wrappers are the ones that are going to do the damage.

The f&G trapper took out an entire pack in the Bear Valley area. Sucks!

    • Sorry wolf moderate but I do not understand how the justices did not see that irreparable harm will be done to wolves, especially in Idaho. Targeting up to 850 wolves out of 1000, a third of whom are puppies, is completely disgusting. You’re right on one point, the trappers will do most of the damage..just the way they did when wolves were exterminated in the West the first time around.

    • Nabeki, such a sweet wolf pup, his expression says it all. How can anyone not want to nurture and protect something so precious?

I’m elated that wolf tag sales are low, and I wish hunters/trappers many fruitless results in their endeavors. If you could please verify Wolf Moderate’s comment, is it true the reason for no quota in Idaho is to hide the actual number of wolves killed? And this would be Idaho’s “magic math,” shoddy and reprehensible accountability? You can’t have a protection threshold without keeping count. It’s like having a speed limit, without a speedometer.

My problem is that I keep trying to assign reason to something which reason has no part in. These people can not be trusted, and I don’t like the history of this state, the way they coddle incompetence and manipulate facts to suit their nefarious purpose. The entire situation is foul no matter how you look at it. IS there any competence anywhere in the state of Idaho or FWS? Who will be required to monitor the situation or be responsible to keep an “accurate” account of wolf populations, FWS? Why am I not content with that?

My heart aches with the futility and senselessness of it all…

nor travel to that repressive state any time soon
either until “Butcher” Otter is thrown out of office
and our wolves put back on the protection of the ESA.
I was gonna buy some more lava rock and marble chips at Ace Hardware here in Hamilton
    for my landscaping project…
But since those products are from Idaho,
    I’m gonna get something else.
And until Idaho respects ALL of our wildlife
    and wildlife advocates alike,
I don’t even want anything more to do with that state!
And as far as I’m concerned,
Gov. “Butcher” Otter and his henchmen

    The super-volcano at Yellowstone
will eventually wake up and blow,
because of man’s hostility towards our

    adopted that stupid “shoot-on-sight” policy,
Yellowstone and Wyoming is off my list of
    places to travel at.
    I don’t know…
If I had a spacecraft, I would leave Earth
and find my a more hospitable planet to live on,
’cause Earth right now, seems to be on the

’cause man has turned away from God

But think, just because you have no consience to kill wolves and have the law of man on your side doesn’t mean you are not goin’ to be responsible to your actions.
    Romans 8 (King James Version)
19For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

20For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

21Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

22For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

23And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

24For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

May god forgive us! we live in a fallen world!

When you call Idaho, you will get a woman in the office who will try to feed you bull about wanting to send wolves to all other states, etc. IT IS A PLOY TO DERAIL YOUR COMMENTS – DO NOT LET THAT HAPPEN! THIS WOMAN IS BUTCHER OTTER’S TALKING HEAD AND SHE WILL HAVE YOU CALLING THE FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICES TO GET WOLVES FOR YOUR STATE! Idaho has not authority to do that, and, it is just not that simple! One pair of wolves is NOT a genetically viable amount for reintroduction! TELL HER TO TAKE YOUR COMMENT AND THAT YOU DO NOT WANT TO DISCUSS THIS WITH HER! BUT, CALL AND KEEP UP THE BOYCOTTS.

TODAY – OTTER OF IDAHO – 1-208-334-2100; MONDAY – SCHWEITZER OF MONTANA – 1-406-444-3111; TUESDAY – MEAD OF WYO – 1-307-777-7434. TELL THEM THE BOYCOTTS WILL CONTINUE AND BE STEPPED UP UNTIL THE KILLING STOPS! THERE IS STILL AN APPEAL PENDING, SO, THAT MAY HELP LATER!

BOYCOTT TOURISM AND COMMERCE – IN IDAHO – POTATOES AND COLDWATER CREEK! TELL THE GOVS!

  9. well, the ‘murderers’ get their way for now. I guess it will be a race for them to kill as many wolves as possible before the war is over. I see that the battle will be going on with the courts ‘considering’ a “challenge to congressional action that stripped wolves of protections in Montana and Idaho, and in parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah”. I so hope one of the eariler comments is correct in that not many wolf tags have been sold. we and the wolves may not have the legal status that should be there but maybe regular people (ie hunters) can be asked to be humane and NOT kill just because it is legal for the moment.

  10. What does one say after a ruling like this. This was our & the wolves last hope. What do we do now???

    Like

    • I’m going to post this on the front of the blog but this is NOT the end. The plaintiffs in this case will refile their motion for an emergency injunction with the justices that will rule on the merits of the case, The justices that handed down this ruling are not the same judges that will decide the case. They dismissed this motion without prejudice. The plaintiffs take this to mean they did not want to deal with this but a new set of judges will be appointed to hear the case and they can ask them for an injunction. We fight on!!

    • Judy….All is not lost. The judges who ruled on this are not the same judges that will hear the merits of the case. Those judges have not been seated yet. Once the clerk assigns a hearing date for oral arguments the plaintiffs can renew their request for an emergency injunction!! Keep the faith, we can’t abandon wolves now.

    • Hi g….
Actually boycotts can work if people are committed to them. They worked in Alaska when they were aerial gunning wolves in the early nineties. I remember it well. Of course they resumed the killing when a new governor took over but it did stop the killing. Apathy is the problem, people have to be very committed for it to work.

  16. This is a crime. When will people realize that the wolves are very important to our ecosystem?????????????

    Like

    • Barbara…they don’t care about the ecosystem or facts. They are self centered, mean spirited and love to kill things. You think you can reason with people like that? Our only hope was through the courts. They figured that out and because our dear President appointed a rancher to the Interior, they were able to pull a fast one and get their way. Almost everyone abandoned wolves in the Senate because they were so worried about getting Tester re-elected, they figured why not sacrifice Montana and Idaho wolves to do it? It is truly one of the biggest betrayals. It would never have happened without Salazar and Obama’s appointment of him. So here we are on the verge of wolf slaughter. We still have hope that the plaintiffs can refile the emergency injunction motion with the merit judges.

  18. I have to agree that boycotting these states does sound appealing but I also doubt its effectiveness. Montana’s top two industries are agriculture and tourism and hurting tourism isn’t really going to affect agriculture, who are the ones causing all the problems in the first place. We really need a way to impact agriculture and I have suggested several times that creating a way to identify predator friendly operations (similar to the dolphin free tuna in the fishing industry) would be a step in the right direction. DOW never did respond however to me when I asked them about it though.

Wolves will be hunted in the Lolo and Selway zones until June 30, 2012, a 10 month season. Clearly, they are aiming for total extermination there. Also, the trapping season is now from November through March.

I don’t understand the reasoning behind it. I mean, I do ….. but geez your right they will kill them all. Why doesn’t Greenpeace have something like “Whale Wars” for the Wolves???? Someone has to do something like that. I mean we just can’t sit back & watch them get slaughtered ~ there must be something we can do. ???? I would be willing to do almost anything for the wolves out west.
I think this calls for tough action.

      • ramses….Idaho and Montana wolves have been abandoned by so many of the groups, they’ve moved on. What really galls me is why were these wolves brought back? To be tortured and killed? They could have stayed in Canada, they didn’t need this. Where is everybody now, all the supporters of wolf recovery?

We have a few groups that are hanging tough and our grass roots movement, but I have to tell you ramses i am not happy with the apathy I see among wolf advocates. People should be in the streets holding peaceful rallies protesting this slaughter. I don’t understand why adovcates can get so worked up about mega-loads, there were 200 people protesting the other day but it’s like pulling teeth to get people to protest the slaughter of wolves?? It boggles the mind.

  30. I was so upset when I read about this. And I was extremely upset when Idaho’s Hunt started a few days ago. I was so upset, in fact, that I couldn’t focus on my Biology test (it was on the day the hunt started) and I failed it as a result (I told my Bio teacher the next day about the situation and how I felt, and she understood – not that I’ll be able to retake the test, but it’s good to know that she understood my feelings). Anyway, I just cannot believe that they are doing this to those innocent wolves! It just breaks my heart!
Although I’m not that good at poetry, I wrote a poem in dedication to wolves – and to the Rocky Mountain Gray Wolves in particular. It’s from a wolf’s POV:

    Why us?
    What have we ever done?
To deserve the fear, the hatred,
    the blaming…the killing?

We are only trying to survive.
    To feed our packs.
    To protect the pups.
    To enjoy each other’s company.
    Is that wrong?

    Why blame and kill us?
    In response to livestock loss
And to less successful elk hunts?
Is it because we are easy to blame?
Is it because we are easier to get rid of
    than bad weather or disease?
Or is it just plain fear and hatred?

    Why fear us?
    Why hate us?
We don’t want to harm you.
    We only want to survive.
We’d avoid you if we could,
but your kind is enroaching onto our habitat.
    It is hard to avoid you;
    but we try.
If we see you, we run away.
And we’re not as likely to attack
as a bear, a couger, or a dog.

Yet you hate us more than any other predator.
    You attempted to exterminate wolves
    with more determination and hatred
    than with any other predator.
    You shot us.
    You poisoned us.
You even tortured us at times.
    Why?

But not all hope is lost.
Your kind has brought us back
    from the brink of extinction.
You’ve restored us to our home
    in the Rocky Mountains.
    Why destroy that hard effort,
    And kill us off again?
    It just doesn’t make sense,
    to bring something back,
    only to destroy it again.

    It is time for peace,
    between wolves and humans.
    Us wolves are ready.
    But are you?
Some humans are, but many are not.
They want to kill us off,
just like they did years ago.
Peace cannot be created if the fear,
    the hatred,
    the blaming,
    and the killing continue.

    Please protect us.
    Don’t kill us off again.
We look forward to the day
    where wolves and humans
    will finally live in harmony.
With no more fear, hatred, blaming…or killing.

I hope you like it! 🙂
