Snaring, Killing Wolves With A Smile…

Warning Graphic Video

No words can describe this video, it was shot in Canada but gives you a glimpse into the stark reality Idaho wolves are facing. The snares are indiscriminate killers. Wolf pups can be snared as easily as adults. Any animal tame or wild is @ risk.

A wolves’ life is very hard, they’re only successful in bringing down prey once every ten attempts.  Trapping and snaring is turning their lives into a living hell.

  Speak out for them!

  1. I know that I can not watch this, its my worst nightmare come true. I dream of the beautiful wolves running wild through the woods. I see them romping, playing,m hunting and interacting with one another. I know that Idaho allows snaring and trapping, I have called the Idaho Fish and Game department many times. I tried leaving comments to their staff who don’t want to hear what happens when an animal is caught in a snare or trap and how they suffer. One woman would not listen or talk about it but told me how much calves suffer when a wolf kills a calf. The logic is not there, the heart is missing, the soul is gone in some people. I have nightmares every night, every morning I wake up thinking about the wolves at risk. I can not sleep over it. What is wrong with this country that we allow traps and snares to be placed to kill and maim to cause unspeakable suffering. What kind of a person puts down one of these contraptions. I will send this to Defenders of Wildlife, Earthjustice, Center for Biological Diversity, Humane Society of America in the hopes that they will post it. If people actually saw what traps and snares do, perhaps they would be so sickened as to vote to outlaw them. This is what needs to happen.

    • Louise…the worst part is the federal government brought wolves back only to be tortured and killed sixteen years later. These wolves are trapped in the wolf states. Where can they go? It’s an absolute tragedy.

  3. Whoever manages this post, I wrote the comment above and I have been working on an action plan to try and get the major wolf proponents to come together in a coordinated effort to provide products that will help wolves, written materials, letters to Congress, petitions, etc……I am also looking to put together a coalition of people who can commit to calling Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming senators and congressmen and the Fish and Wildlife Departments daily to express their outrage. If these departments receive enough negative feedback they generally respond to it, even if it is slowly at first. The only feedback they hear is from ranchers and sportsmen. But I am looking to connect with you to brainstorm. I have tried contacting you with no success in the past. If you read this please do e mail me @ louise@kaneproductions.net, I have worked in washington DC for NOAA under a Knauss fellowship, at a New England state senate office as a policy analyst, I am a non practicing lawyer and have an MA in marine affairs. I also have a long background as a producer of commerials, advertising campaigns and documentaries. Most importantly, I have a strong commitment to wolves and can not live with what is happening in this country. I am looking for others like me to team up with.

This website provides the contact numbers of where and who to call on the Black Friday day posting. I noticed that there were 750,000 hits or more on this site. Whoever is reading the most effective way to stop trapping and hunting is to flood the lines with calls against trapping and hunting and to get media involved.

    • Hi Louise,

One of the biggest problems in the Northern Rockies is politicians catering to ranching and hunting interests. Wolves have no friends in government and the fish and game agencies have created giant game farms in these states. We had a major push and letter writing campaign the entire fall, winter and spring of 2010/2011…calling on Congress to do the right thing and reject the influence of the hunting and ranching lobbies but in the end it fell on deaf ears. The US Senate voted to delist wolves via budget rider, in a misguided effort to help Tester with his re-election, since his opponent, Denny Rehberg is also running on the anti-wolf platform. They’re now trying to “out-wolf” each other, pretty pathetic.

You should hear from me soon.

      • Hi Nabeki,

thank you for responding to me. I am aware of the Tester issue and the rider. It was such an outrage and the worst part about that was that Tester did not have to insert the rider, the issue was not even really on the table at that time. His seat was not up for reelection. I saw that as a defining and terrible moment for Democrats. I spent the two weeks before that vote calling every senator’s office in the country to leave my thoughts on the rider and many times educating the staff about what the rider would do. Many of the staff felt that the rider was just about the issue of whether or not the wolves were recovered. They had no idea that the rider would delist wolves and that then the “management” of wolves would fall to the states that had management plans in place that would take wolves down to bare minimum standards. They had no idea that the rider contained a provision preventing any judicial review of the plans or challenges to them or that the issue had been repeatedly litigated in the courts in favor of the wolves and of keeping them listed. I was horrified that a Democrat would introduce that rider and that people like Kerry (in my state) with a long history of voting pro environment and Barbara Boxer also voted for the spending bill with the rider attached. Its very disturbing to me that under Obama we now have the worst happening to our wildlife and wild lands. One of the worst indicators of what was to come under Obama was his choice of Ken Salazaar into the cabinet as Secretary of Interior. I had such high hopes for the Obama administration and now I think its been the worst we have seen since Reagan, for environmental reform and protection. In any event, I have followed this pretty closely. Some of the ideas that I have are to put together an action plan that might be used by the NGOS that are fighting for wolves. I have lost a great deal of respect for Defenders of Wildlife as they capitulated in the “settlement” that brought wolves back under state control and according to Earth Justice and Center for Biological Diversity (currently in court fighting the rider under a separation of powers constitutional challenge), Defenders of Wildlife refused to go to court. In any event, having worked in Washington in the government (NOAA) and with many NGOs I know how busy and overwhelmed the small staffs can be. I am hoping to get the NGOs to look at forming a task force of sorts devoted solely to wolf issues, to bringing media attention to the issue of wolves. I have to admit knowing that trapping and snaring has started now I would like to see that issue publicized immediatly and above all others… and before any other work is done. The pain and suffering of the animals in those horrific devices is beyond imagination. I will never get over seeing the faces of wolves and other animals caught. The lone wolf howling that is attached to the trap (posted to your site) will make me loose sleep forever. In any event, I know one thing from my time in Washington; there is strenght in numbers and that’s all politicians care about, that and negative media coverage. I want to get media attention about this issue because I don’t think its being presented correctly. Most people don’t understand the behind the scenes and political posturing and they have the attention span of gnats. We are a nation of dancing with the stars watchers and shopping mall goers. if a subject is going to get attention then it needs to be advertised correctly, it needs to personally connect with viewers and provide some sort of subject that will make them act. People need hard cold facts presented in a short time frame and they need to feel that they are losing something that they have not approved or agreed to and that this was done in a sleazy way. That I think will get their attention. I contacted you because your blog is a good way to vent and I am in such misery about this I literally can not sleep at night thinking about what is happening to our amazing wolves and wildlife. I also see that you have a great number of hits on your site and your committment is evident. I am a great believer in partnering on issues to achieve goals. Part of being successful to get attention for this issue will be sheer numbers of people that care about the subject, correct and targeted messages that will get people to act, and outrage. In any event, my idea of a task force would be to have several key volunteers working with a staff member of each of the important NGOS like Natural Resource Defense Council, Earth Justice, Center for Biological Diversity and others. The task force would be solely devoted to ending trapping and snaring through a public awareness campaign…and to work on having wolves protected again for the long term. Key to success will be getting media involved, getting hard hitting PSAs out there in prime time televised spots, and in getting celebrity, artists and musicians involved as well as politicians that may be willing to add a pro wolf agenda to their platforms. It seems that there are a lot of people out there pro wolf but they are poorly organized. After spending hours on the telephone each day calling my senators and others and speaking with the heads of the Montana and Idaho fish and Game divisions and some of their commissioners, I see the problem as huge and that Americans have to see what is happening and that Idaho, Montana and Wyoming have to stop arguing that they have the right to manage a species, that most Americans feel is a national treasure, at its barest minimum. They have to learn that the argument “we have always hunted and trapped and snared” does not mean that its morally right or that its sustainable anymore as a viable management practice that is good for biodiversity. We had slavery for hundreds of years, women were denied voting rights; it was immoral and unjust so is hunting wolves and other predators for trophies and to manage elk and other ungulate populations that are kept in check by predators and benefit from predation by keeping their gene pools strong. The arguments have to change and the dialogue must change. I also believe this issue would benefit from having a good advertising agency help with a concept just as if we were trying to sell coca cola or some other wildly popular product. I am also thinking that wolf lovers need to tie in what is happening with wildlife everywhere and make wolves a part of that equation. People would be freaking out if they heard that some African country was killing off 700 of its 1000 lions. Well Idaho is the size of New England and it’s larger then some African countries. Idaho has 1000 or less wolves living there and they have a plan in place to kill off all but 150. Jesus, how is it that the media is not all over this. Bad advertising, not using the right facts, not keeping it simple, no coordinated effort. Most people don’t understand about the ESA and how it works. They may not understand the science behind predators and a healthy ecosystem, but I bet they can agree that after we spent millions of dollars to recover a species (sort of) that it is stupid, short sighted and cruel to kill as many of them as possible the year that they are taken off the legislation that protected them. They can agree that a state as big as Idaho must be able to support 1000 wolves, they can see that trapping and snaring is a nightmare and once they see an image of death via one of those abominations they won’t forget. Not all Americans are Idahoans or Montanans and not all people from Montana and Idaho are ranchers and sportsmen. I think that part of the solution is good advertsing. A task force could put together a good list of action items and goals and also work on creating a volunteer force with specific tasks to assist the NGOs in their goals. I know that I am busy…. but that this is important enough to me that I would be willing to devote some time every day to work on it and seeing your website with 700,000 hits gave me hope that others might be willing to as well. I hope you can call me or respond to me about some of my ideas. I want the hunting and snaring to stop. I want wolves to be considered the national treasure that they are and to be left alone.

thank you for your work and your consideration of my correspondence.

      • That is quite the letter Louise, it’s great to see advocates so motivated. I like many of your ideas. We’ve been disappointed by the big groups many times but there are several who genuinely care about wolves and are in court to try and save them: IE, AWR, FOC, WEG, WWP, CBD and FOA. The Center has redeemed themselves a little in my eyes because originally they were one of the “ten settling” groups who sold out Montana and Idaho wolves and in the end the ten groups capitulation backfired and only showed them to be weak. Since that time CBD has joined the Appeal brought by AWR.so I have to give them credit for that. The rest of the big groups seems to be accepting of the wolf hunt and we’ve heard very little from any of them. So it’s many major disappointments, one after the other.

I think you have great ideas and I agree the movement needs to be organized. Most readers on this blog would like to do something pro-active besides what is already being done. We have to bring pressure on the politicians that created this mess. As the election moves closer they are going to be sensitive to any bad press and I think we can use that to our advantage. I’ll send you an email to discuss it further.

I wish people would just stop and think before they do these horrific things. That wolf who luckily escaped from the snare would of been in such uncomfort before it was snared again and strangled. And they do not care? That is pretty obvious, I do hope that one day, people like this will come to their senses.

Nabeki, I live in England, so could I have an e-mail to the most important people regarding the snaring and trapping of wolves? I cannot phone from over here, but I can certainly e-mail to the best of my ability.

I have had the honour of spending time in the company of wolves on a few occasions, and had the amazing experience of playing with cubs. How anyone could murder these incredible creatures is beyond my comprehension… We should be learning from them, not slaughtering them (and other creatures who get caught in these evil, indiscriminate traps) and seemingly trying to wipe them out completely. Will mankind never learn that biodiversity in a necessity for a healthy, well-balanced ecosystem?
I have to admit, I couldn’t bring myself to watch the video… I have long petitioned for the global banning of snares and other devices of torture. As for the genitally-challenged pondlife scum (I’m trying to remain polite!)… I look forward to the day Lady Karma leaves it (I refuse to call it ‘him’) trapped and unable to free itself in one of its own snares to die a slow and agonising death!

I could not watch these kind of videos, ’cause I would end up being committed for life.. I am from Finland, we appreciate our beautiful wild life here. We, too, have our imperfections in our government, but we, the people, are more aware of the reality, than US citizens. Your country is so messed up, sorry to say. It ONLY concentrates to being the one super-power of the economic world. And most people really thinks that the government is good and acts like they see is humane and equal. Bullshit!! People like to close their eyes from the evil. They live on this illusion that is created by the leaders, it’s based only on productivity! They don’t care about anything else! Religion is still used as to control people, but luckily, the internet has brought people together and is starting to wake everybody to face the reality. “They” can no more control what information we get! The more there are of us, the more we can do together! I know that everyone who kills only for the pleasure of it, will get theirs eventually. Universe is based on good, not evil. Why all existence would be based on something that makes us suffer? That’s why we know that good will win, always, at SOME point! We may not see the victory yet, but it can be a long journey. Each one of us can do something good and important to reach that goal! We have driven the animals from their territories, we think we can control EVERYTHING! When they try to survive, we kill them in the most inhumane way. When they “steal” one of the cattle, it slows the productivity process, therefore they must all be hunt down to teach them a lesson. Barbaric, cruel.. If wolves tried try to kill my dogs, I would protect them, they are my family, not with guns, but my own hands based on how many there are of them, and if I failed, I would not want to revenge.. I would understand that they do that because they are desperate, hungry and because they have so little space nowadays. I know that wolves, just like any predators, are grateful of everything they get, they appreciate it in ways we could never imagine. We are used to getting everything handed out to us, we don’t have to fight for anything, therefore we don’t appreciate anything and we have lost the ability to put ourselves in someone else’s position. We are isolated the nature from us, so we have forgotten the nature in ourselves. We have become ugly hairless freaks who put on stupid suits on everyday and go do something we think is important for 8 hours, then we come home to our stupid hairless-freak-family, 2.3 children so we can raise a new generation of hairless freaks to make this world more productive. I am so sick of that world..
