The Cynthia Lummis Wolf Rider is out of the spending bill! This is a real victory for wolves and wolf advocates!!
Congress passed a similar rider last Spring which removed ESA protections from wolves in the Northern Rockies, blocking legal challenges. Now the rider is being litigated as unconstitutional in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Because of that rider we have two brutal wolf hunts in Idaho and Montana, with wolves dying daily and an escalation of the brutality, the likes of which most of us have ever witnessed directed at an animal. The Endangered Species Act has been weakened. Maybe Congress didn’t have the stomach for a repeat of that with the 2012 elections looming.
F0r today, wolves in Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are safe. It’s not often we can bring good news, lets savor it and live to fight another day!

Wildlife Services had another 47 million cut from their budget which is a good thing but not enough.
“The bill includes $820 million – $47 million below last year’s level
for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). This funding level will continue
support for programs to enhance control or eradication of plant and animal pest and diseases.”

You got that right, Barbara. And I’m predicting there’s gonna be a lot of whining from those in Wyoming who wanted the state to get on the bandwagon of brutality. To which I say, “Too bad, losers!” Also good to see that the Great Lakes wolves will not be stripped of their protections. At least not by Congress. USFWS may still do it sometime soon, but hopefully it will be science-based.
The people of the Great Lakes region are CLEARLY more tolerant of the wolves’ presence than those in the Northern Rockies are. We’ve got 4,100+ wolves in an area of just over 78,000 square miles here in the Great Lakes states mentioned above. That equals a population density of 53 per 1,000 square miles. That’s 4 5/12 times the population density in the Northern Rockies, which is only 12 per 1,000 square miles.
Obviously, they need a good, hard lesson in tolerance. And my region is the one to teach them that.

Pete, we all need to keep up the work we are all doing to help stop this senseless Wolves and other animals.
I do understand that people need to eat. But not kill a wolf for a trophy or for it’s fur.

Time to go after Idaho…BIG TIME. I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but they are advertising their potatoes on TV all the time now. Keep boycotting them! Send them a message…a strong one that no matter what they do, until they stop the slaughtering of the wolves, they and all their products or anything that would make money for them will come into their existence as soon as there is a cold day in hell. Let them and their families starve. Let them see what pain feels like. True, it won’t be anything like what they’ve done to the wolf, but it will at least give them a little taste of their own medicine.

I read Norm Dick’s summary of the budget bill and it says $0 for listing endangered species. Nabeki, does that really mean that there will be no money spent for this in fiscal 2012? That would be horrifying.
