State biologist dreads Hollywood portrayal of wolves
Attacks on humans, implied in movie’s trailers, extremely rare
Wolves are coming to the big screen today in “The Grey,” a man-versus-beast thriller starring Liam Neeson.
When their plane crashes in Alaska’s frozen wilderness, a bunch of oil-field roughnecks fight for survival. Not only do the men combat cold and hunger, they’re stalked by a wolf pack.
Film previews feature eerie howls and shots of feral eyes glinting in the darkness. When carnage ensues in this R-rated film, the wolves are usually the winners.
But the movie’s portrayal of wolves as man-eaters dismays Gary Wiles.
“My first reaction was, ‘Oh, no!’ ” said Wiles, a wildlife biologist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. “It looks totally like a Hollywood-contrived movie: something to strike at people’s basic fears.”

As if there aren’t enough reasons to dislike this movie, add the sickening fact that Liam Neeson and the cast of “The Grey” actually ate wolf meat while making this “movie”. The thought of them eating the flesh of the ancestor of our beloved dogs, makes me physically ill.

I guess Hollywood doesn’t have anything better to do then demonize wolves. With two wolf hunts mowing down wolves in the Northern Rockies, aerial gunning planned in Idaho’s Lolo zone, wolves in the Great Lakes coming off the endangered species list, facing brutal hunts, Hollywood decided this would be a good time to make a movie about killer wolves.
Wolves are the least dangerous of large predators in North America.
THERE HAS NOT BEEN ONE FATAL WOLF ATTACK ON HUMANS IN THE LOWER FORTY EIGHT IN OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OF RECORD KEEPING.
There have been two controversial human/wolf fatal encounters in North America, in the last century, that’s it. You have a better chance of accidentally being killed by hunters (100 fatal hunting accidents per year in the US and Canada with another 1000 injured) or have your child shot @ a bus stop. It’s not wolves parents should worry about @ bus stops but stray bullets from hunters.

Our beloved dogs, kill another 30 people or more a year and bite approx. 4.7 million people annually. Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs but those are the facts.
Deer/vehicle accidents claim at least 200 lives every year and cause billions of dollars in damages. You know why there are so many deer? The fish and game agencies make sure predators are targeted and their numbers kept low. Then deer populations explode causing hundreds of thousands of auto accidents.
In Canberra, the capital of Australia, they’ve decimated the dingoes, the kangaroo’s only natural predator. Around the city there’s been an explosion of the Roo population. The Roos hop into the city at night, munch on people’s lawns, get hit by cars and chased by dogs. These are “urban kangaroos”, pushed into the city by drought, dwindling habitat and their own over-population. When Roo numbers get too high “wildlife managers” control them by “culling/killing” kangaroos by the thousands. Roo mothers are shot in the head during “the culls” and their little pouched “Joeys” are either decapitated or their skulls are crushed.
Australia isn’t any better at “managing” their wildlife then we are. They eliminate the top predator, the dingo, who could prevent kangaroo overpopulation. Instead, kangaroo numbers go up and the guns come out.
The same happens in America with deer. Natural predators are eliminated, the deer population explodes and you have a recipe for disaster.

POLICE in western Pennsylvania say a woman was killed when part of a deer struck by another vehicle went through her windshield and hit her.
People die from bee stings, are fatally stomped by moose, run over by trains, approx. 90 people are killed by lightning strikes each year, in 2010 14, 748 people were murdered in the US, I could go on and on.
My point? Wolf attacks are VERY RARE. So rare that making a movie about killer wolves is ridiculous. Wolves DO NOT need more bad press, the anti-wolf crowd spends their waking hours spreading myths and lies about wolves. Just because someone came up with this lame-brained idea of a movie, doesn’t mean it had to be made. It will do nothing but hurt wolves, just like the movie Jaws hurt the image of sharks. 70 to 90 million sharks are killed every year around the world.
Please boycott this movie!!
You can picket your local theater where “The Grey” will be playing but personally I think that draws more attention, people love controversy. BUT do contact the theater complex and let them know how you and your friends feel about this movie and that you’ll be staying away.
I call on the producer and director to re-consider what they’re doing. Are they not aware of the nasty campaign being waged against wolves across this country but specifically in the Northern Rockies? Have they not done their homework? Do they care? Wolf haters don’t need help from Hollywood to persecute wolves. What happened to all the environmentalists in the movie industry? Will they be silent and allow this misunderstood, highly intelligent, social animal to be characterized as something they’re not?
At the very least a disclaimer is needed, wolves rarely ever attack people. They are shy and reclusive, dedicated to their families. The exception to wolves exhibiting extreme fear of humans is when wolves been habituated to human presence, as in Yellowstone National Park. where because of their rock star status, they are exposed to people on a regular basis. Visitors are fascinated by these iconic animals and can’t get enough of them. Wolves generate at least 35 million dollars annually to the GYA (Greater Yellowstone Area). Yellowstone wolves do tolerate human presence because they don’t perceive humans as threats inside the park. Outside the park is a different story, since these wolves are so used to people they are easy targets. The most unfortunate incident happened during Montana’s 2009 wolf hunt, when FWP opened the hunt right outside park boundaries. Wolves routinely move in and out of the park because they can’t read signs. Hunters took advantage of this and decimated the studied and famous Cottonwood Pack, killing the alpha male and female and their powerful daughter. When the alpha pair is killed the pack usually disperses.
Shame on the director and producers of this film. They should visit the Northern Rockies, where brutal wolf hunts are in full swing and see for themselves the hatred and scapegoating wolves are subjected to.

I’d like to leave another entertainment ALERT!! Yesterday was really Friday the 13th for me – I had the opportunity to spend the day with my grandson, Will (wolf-lover and 4 yrs old) – we walked into the lobby of the theater and there was a 8 foot x 5 foot poster of THE GREY! An up-coming-attraction poster! Put me in such a sour mood, I almost got out my lipstick and drew a mustache on Liam Neeson! Thought about writing a warning on the poster, but remembered it is best not to call too much attention to the movie – they will attract more movie-goers! Many love controversy!
THEN settling in to watch a Walt Disney animated movie, redone in 3-D, was subjected to watching Disney’s depiction of a pack of vicious, scary, blood-thirsty wolves attacking an old man and his horse in the woods, then attacking Beauty, herself, (Beauty and the Beast), and her horse. Then the Beast fought off the vicious wolves and almost died himself!! GRRRR…… I could hear the gasps of very young children and even a little crying…..this movie definitely frightened the children and left a negative impression on them about wolves. And so it begins…..more fairy tales maligning wolves. “The Grey” promises to give the same negative impression of wolves to adults.
On a small positive note, my grandson, Will, actually said to me, “Nana, wolves aren’t like that!!”

Grrr! I don’t remember that being in Beauty and the Beast, but I vaguely remember the injured part. How horrible. But I’m glad I know now, so I’ll remember to not let my children watch it.

P.S. On my way out the door, I did mention to the ticket taker person that I was distraught and offended by the theater about to show THE GREY. This theater was an AMC – probably futile as AMC AND REGAL THEATERS merged with OPEN ROAD FILMS (the maker of The Grey) in April of 2011. So be assured that EVERY AMC AND REGAL THEATER WILL BE SHOWING THIS FILM….they are all business partners and in cahoots. Sensationalism for $$$$$$$$$ – wolves paying the real price for generations to come, as this movie with then go to Netflicks and video and then late night television…….growls…..

BE DRAMATIC! SHOW THE WORST! That is how they sell newspapers and how the television stations get viewers!
Any adult wild animal, looking docile, or sleeping is not “fun”
to watch, but offer them a police dog, doing what it has been
trained to do, savaging a violent criminal and tyhey will grab it.
“vicious dog kills a harmless man”, “Police threaten civillians
with a ferocious animal” they will find a lot of ways to distort the
truth and when it comes to film making, modern techniques can
make any animal look twice its size, fit fangs and have blood
dripping from its mouth.
The worst part of this, is that the average Mr and Mrs, law abiding
perfect citizens and their kids, would rather watch the un-truthful
fake movies, than a good documentary than know the facts.

Every time I hear about how rare it is that animals kill people, I think about all the animals people kill with no thought about the lives lost or the suffering felt. I appreciate the wolves and deplore the killing, but I also feel bad for the deer that are killed by preditors and cars. Their lives should not be taken lightly either.

Insanity upon insanity. Shame on Liam Neeson. Considering the violence, torture, and persecution that wolves are subjected to, what wolves need right now is a “Wildlife Schindler” not some negative propagandist who perpetuates fear and hatred of these beautiful and important apex predators. Have real wolves been used in the making of this movie or are they computer generated like the bizarre depiction of wolves in the movie, The Day After Tomorrow? Maybe Mr. Neeson should consider a movie about giant, man-eating slugs from the planet Ork for his next project. Leave wolves out of the fantasy- thriller genre. Wolves need all the good and honest press they can get. A disclaimer is the least the creators of this fiction can do. Maybe Leonardo DiCaprio would consider a movie that tells the truth about wolves? Mr. Neeson, your people will be hearing from me.

I’m a wolf lover, of course. But that doesn’t mean I’m narrow-minded, seeing only the best in them. They’re just like every other animal as well; just wanting to survive.

I know right! In the trailer a black wolf stands in front of him, and then bares its teeth. Like you said, obviously they were trying to send the image that the wolf was almost “egging him on” or trying to invoke fear into the protagonist, but in reality, that wolf would have just continued staring, not baring its teeth, and most likely after a minute would get nervous by the protagonist staring, which is threatening to a wolf, and walk away. There are many things wrong with this movie, so much science fiction.

Great, this is just what wolves need: more demonizing (note the sarcasm). I wonder if this movie was inspired by that ONE attack on the Alaska teacher (I really feel bad for the teacher and her family, but I’m sick and tired of the anti-wolf jumping right onto the incident to prove that wolves are evil). But whatever the motivation, I really hope they put that disclaimer before and/or after the movie. Not that I will ever know if they do, of course, cause I’m boycotting it! I’d rather watch Cars 2 for the umpteenth time than see a new movie that protrays wolves are vicious killers!

Thats a fantastic report on this movie and its lack of moral value and set against those other statistics of how we accept death and injury by our own hands, really hits home.
I can only imagine that the film makers did no, or were dismissive of any research information into their subject matter, or more likely they simply do not care for anything other than the great God money.
But has been stated, perhaps no need to shout and scream about it, it will only heighten awareness and draw attention to it, it may appeal to those few people who seek a cheap violent thrill, but perhaps those people would never take up the wolves cause anyway.
Just hope it bombs!

In opposition to that film, here in England the BBC just re ran a program on Yellowstone Park’s history, including the ‘re-wolfing’ program, it was wonderful!
Now wouldn’t a great film for our age be the story, ‘warts and all’, of the wolf, from when Man learned from them, thru’ to their slaughter all over the world, to Seton, Leopold up to the Yellowstone release, ending with Native Americans once again living on their spiritual lands, managing it and an eco-system at least partly returning to its former state.
I believe the wolf’s story is a metaphor for our times and a lesson and a realisation that we can and have to work with Nature, not conquer her or fight against her, only at our peril.

I was furious while I was reading about this disgusting movie! Then when I read that one of my all-time favorite actors was at the bottom of it I was heart sick! I will definitely be contacting Mr. Neeson and anyone else involved in this abomination. I will be also getting everyone I know to boycott this movie as well as letting the theaters know that we are doing it.Just one stupid movie like this can undo the twenty years of work that we have been doing to change the way ignorant people treat wolves.

There will be no wolves left at all well before June because of these policies. I have read the hatred of wolves, especially on the wolf videos with music on You Tube from the ignorant and uneducated hunters who constantly spread the lies we all have heard. I posted several times the real truth and was treated so rudely by some of their other clientele. One in particular. One women thinks that wolves are the only other animal on the planet eating the food and depriving humans of that meat from wild game and that it is not fair that the wolves are doing this. She thinks that the few thousand wolves ear more food than over 7 billion people. Nothing I wrote to her registered. I even went online to try to figure the closest current live wolfs in North America for the stats, but evidently due to the dumbing down of the masses, billions is a smaller number than thousands. The fact that wolves maybe catch 2-3% of every 100 animals they go after for food and that they eat the animals that humans would not,did not deter that womans closed mindedness. Truly sad.
I will still keep telling the truth to the public with the most current info from my state DNR and the new employee there who has taken over Donna’s place.Some people are at least receptive to the truth, so I will keep working away at it.
I do fear that this time, they will slaughter so many wolves that we will not be able to bring them back again. And just who is keeping track of current kills and as it looks like the limit will be reached in a matter of weeks and not months, who is going to stop the hunters . They will kill anything that resembles a wolf as hunting season is still open, logic does not enter into the mind of many hunters and will they target peoples Malamutes and Huskies next, as they are practically wolves anyway, well some hunters will say that even if yours is leashed and collared in your fenced in yard..
Also just heard today from my friends insurance company that they are going to crack down on Malamutes and Huskies in the near future. The madness keeps spreading as it doesn’t look like other large dogs are included in this list.

I fear some of what you say is true but wolf advocates are many and we could be a powerful force in the wildlife reformation movement if we would only unite. I was very disappointed to read DOW believes wolves in the Great Lakes Region are recovered. Don’t they understand once the guns start firing those numbers will go down? Wolves weren’t on the ESA only because of numbers but mainly for persecution of their species. It’s a shame they don’t see that. How can anyone be deaf to the hateful, hateful rhetoric directed at wolves? We only have to look to Idaho as what we don’t want to happen to wolves.

Hi Sandra…yes it’s very sad about Minnesota. They had a wolf management plan in place up until the summer that said if wolves were ever delisted in your state that there would be a five year waiting period on a wolf hunt, with lots of comment periods. But Minnesota changed that this summer, driven I’m sure by the rabid anti wolf crowd. Now Minnesota has planned their 2012 of 400 wolves. The can be killed by trap, bullet or arrow.

I can’t believe what I saw on a french website. This film is also coming to France. I’ll totally have to alert all the people I know to boycott this… Garbage. I know that’s a big word, but that’s it. Show violence, blood, very hard pictures. We saw what happened to sharks when films about sharks attacks came… I’m fed up to see that image put on wolves. Blood-thirsty… They have to go to a slaughter house and we’ll see which mammal is the worst about “meat consumption” and “bloody scenes”. Oh, I forgot. “Humans are evolved creatures”. Yeah… Obviously…

Violetta…Thank you for speaking out in France, I imagine this movie will be released all over the world. The wolves in Europe, Russia, Canada and Alaska don’t need this kind of publicity, they are killing them there as well. Canada and Russia are not kind to their wolves at all. Terrible persecution.

I saw an ad for this on tv and almost sent you an e-mail right away, but somehow I got sidtracked. This is just one more in a litany of crap directed @Wolves – from time we are little and listen to Red riding hood! & Peter & The Wolf, etc. etc. we “know” who the bad guys are and they have 4legs not 2! I started keeping a list of the times daily I heard the Wjolf used in a negative context from news programs, to casual conversations to movies, etc. – no wonder no one cares if they are slaughtered. Djo you remember the political ad using Wolves in sheep’s clothing? Right now I am hoping that poor “lone Wolf” going thru California makes it to somewhere w/ other Wolves before one of the livestock nut cases kills him.

I volunteer & work for the Wildlife Waystation and have the honor & privilege of working closely with wolves & wolf hybrids, amongst other animals. People need to educate themselves about these amazing animals and realize that where the ecosystem is nearly perfect is where they will find wolves. Everything on this earth serves a purpose, great or small, who made man Lord over all else??? We’ve made a huge mess of this planet, it’s time we woke up and listened to the animals for a change. Man changes the environment to suit HIS needs. Animals adapt and evolve for the environment! Now you try & tell me who’s right!?

So well said Alyson. Some humans are truly blind. We only have to look at the imbalances in our ecosystems to see what happens when apex predators are removed. That’s why we have so many people dying in deer/auto accidents every year, because their natural predators have been decimated.

Even local wolf sanctuaries could use the help. Also I would HOPE they add the disclaimer this movie is based on fictional events. Extinction is forever and when we create undue Fear of ANY creature like Jaws did for sharks it most certainly will cause hatred.

Reaction to Corey Rossi’s Resignation over Black Bear Hunting Violations

Snaring bears and aggressive predator control: causes that Corey Rossi fought for as head of the Alaska Division of Wildlife Conservation – and also causes being taken up this week at the Alaska Board of Game meeting in Anchorage.
But on Friday, the first day of meetings, Rossi was conspicuously absent. Even so, he was much the topic of conversation in the hallways outside the meeting.
His resignation came the day before, when the news broke that Alaska State Troopers have charged Rossi, 51, with hunting violations connected to black bear hunts he guided in 2008.
Those in the room, who came to protest proposals that would allow hunters to snare more bears, found irony in Rossi’s predicament.
“It’s a huge embarrassment for Fish and Game to have their director be basically a poacher of wildlife,” said Wade Willis, director of the Science Now Project, an advocacy group for Board of Game issues.
Willis says Rossi was feared by some Fish and Game biologists.
“He was there to force predator control and intensive management to the fullest extent,” said Willis. “If they stood up for science, he would take away their funding and remove their ability to progress in their career.”
Rossi had problems from the start, When he was appointed to the position in 2010, 40 retired biologists signed a letter complaining about his qualifications – mainly because he didn’t have a college degree in science.
Vic Van Ballenberghe a retired wolf and moose biologist, says he hopes the state will conduct a nationwide search to find his replacement.
“A Division of Wildlife Conservation director is one of the most important positions in state government,” says Van Ballenberghe, because the director has control of many Alaskan’s supply of wild food.
“We need a person, first of all, with a college degree in wildlife management and with quite a few years in an agency as an administrator,” said Van Ballenberghe, “a person who has a strong conservation ethic and a proper sense of how wildlife ought to be managed. And that’s not an easy thing to come by, but there are well qualified people in this country, who could fill that role.”
Alaska Fish and Game Commissioner Cora Campbell says she hasn’t had time yet to come up with a process to fill Rossi’s position, but she’s not so sure that someone from outside of Alaska could easily grasp the issues here.
Campbell also said she couldn’t comment on the alleged hunting violations against Rossi.
“These are charges and a process is going forward,” said Campbell, who also pointed out that the game violations, all misdemeanor counts, relate to bear kills that occurred before Rossi became Wildlife Conservation director.
Campbell thanked him for his service.
“He was a staunch defender of state management rights. That was something we very much appreciated,” said Campbell. “He was a believer in abundance-based management, and he did a lot to incorporate that into the management of the department.”
Campbell says Dale Rabe, who worked under Rossi, will serve as interim director and will carry out the same policies.
Greg Roczika, a former Board of Game member, says he’ll miss Rossi, because he put humans first.
“The one thing we know, when the wolf and the predators start to increase, it’s time to prepare for starvation,” said Rocizka, who was appointed by Governor Tony Knowles and later turned against him over the issue of predator control.
Rocizka says if Rossi had been on the job years ago, there might be more moose on the dinner table today.
Knowles says science doesn’t back that up and believes Rossi’s policies have hurt the state’s reputation for sound management.
The former governor was at the Board of Game meeting to protest plans to expand bear snaring and other practices he says are not only bad policy, but immoral.
“There was a great concern that the background of the person who filled that position wasn’t scientific,” said Knowles, “that he wouldn’t have policies that made science and ethical behavior important.”
“Alaskans are passionate about their fish and wildlife resources. And in their passion, everyone’s got a different opinion about what’s the right policy,” said Knowles.
And regardless of who winds up with the job, that debate won’t go away.

Astrid..”abundance based management” means kill most of the predators (like the wolf and brown bears) so there will be more moose, caribou and elk for the hunters to kill. It’s pretty much what we’re doing in Montana and Idaho and of course Alaska.

You guys really have no idea what this movie is about. I admit the marketing campaign is a bit deceiving (but there’s really no other way to get asses into seats for a flick like this) but the wolves are not the villains. At no point are you made to hate them. There is no exploitation for the sake of it. If anything the wolves are portrayed more accurately than the majority of films that feature them. Watch the film and educate yourselves before making outlandish claims.

John, I’ve watched the trailers, the snarling, vicious wolves, the way they are portrayed. By the way, they look CG, I guess to make them bigger and more menacing. I live in wolf country and don’t need to be educated about them, I know them well and I know wolves don’t act this way around humans. If anyone is lucky enough to see a wild wolf out side a national park it’s thrill and a pleasure not a terrifying experience. Most of the time they are just fleeting glimpses on a hillside. The best place to see wild wolves is in Yellowstone, where they are somewhat habituated from all the visitors. They’ll come close to or cross the road. That’s one of the things that made the Druids so famous because they shared their lives with people in the park. We don’t need negative, growling, snarling vicious wolves with 366 dead in the Montana/Idaho hunts. Pleeeeze.

There have been a few, Alpha and Omega was a pro-wolf movie for children. These people won’t make a pro-wolf one probably because this movie was very deliberate. The characters are oil drillers after all. It’s probably made to specifically support the anti-wildlife anti-environment crowd.

Regarding John’s comment: the point is that real wolves don’t act this way. Too many people are still only aware of the mythological wolf, the slavering, bloodthirsty man-eater. Of course, this movie will only heighten wolf hatred and maybe the fanatics in Idaho and Montana, and even Wyoming, will use this to justify their barely veiled plans for wolf extermination in those states. Nabeki, do you think it is a good idea for me to tell people in my community to boycott this movie or will it make them go see it because I brought it up?

I am absolutely boycotting this movie and doing my best to spread the word. Thank you for providing the movie contact info. They will hear from me as will the theaters. I am also writing to the talk shows that have Liam on to promote the silly movie. I did write to the National Parks Conservation Association about this movie and also to comment on their efforts to fight the Alaska Board of Games wolf management plan—aka shoot and kill any way any how— and they wrote back with very encouraging words that public sentiment is in their favor no matter what Hollywood puts out. I wrote to Sierra Club to stop promoting travel to Montana and Alaska and have also put a wolf howl ring tone on my business cell phone. I spread the word about saving wolves all the time now. Everyone must take action too. Just writing on this blog and lamenting the fate of wolves and the inhumanity of man does NOTHING. Get off the computer chair and do something about it.

376 wolves killed in any possible way… the magnitude of this tragedy is overwhelming. Can anybody actually picture 376 dead wolves? Their bodies would probably take a whole field. Packs disrupted, innocent lives cut short while searching for food for their cubs, or playing together, or just resting after a tiring hunt. Animals who never harmed anybody, who just minded their daily lives… To me, it seems like this is the end: a triumphant return of the wolf to the land it belongs to, only to be brutally murdered and pushed back into oblivion, much too soon and much too fast.
I totlally agree with Mary. Praying and lamenting and rambling about the wolf’s soul and spirit are not going to help. Can we please stop talking about this stupid movie which does not even matter in the big picture and move on to something more productive?

Astrid I agree the tragedy is overwhelming. Everyday I look at the heartbreaking numbers as they continue to grow. But the wolves aren’t just numbers, they’re wolf families that are being torn apart, puppies orphaned or killed. It’s an outrage they are getting literally zero tv coverage. Does it have to be 1000 wolves before someone notices? A few of the big orgs aren’t helping by declaring the wolf recovered. That is confusing everyone, we’re not all on the same page. I’m not sure how anyone can consider a population of wolves recovered when as soon as their protections are removed the guns start blazing.
As for “The Grey”…the reason I’ve spent so much time talking about it is because it’s going to do a lot of damage to wolves. The movie is about a pack of “vicious, rogue wolves who stalk people”. You and I both know that wolves are shy animals, frightened of people and this is not their behavior. But others who are not involved with wolves or who know little about them may take this to heart, be scared by it, may decide the hunts are a good thing, who knows what the fallout will be. Now we learn Neeson and the cast actually ate wolf meat, The animals they fed on were trapped, making it more egregious. The whole thing has turned into a circus side show. But it’s not a harmless movie by any means.

I’m from Missoula, MT and am totally ashamed of the disgust going on toward wolves! I lived n Hamilton for quite some time. Basically, I think of these narrow minded people as idiot redneck, gun toting idiots. Ignorance may have at one time been bliss, but n todays society their is NO excuse! All Montanans r not like these ignoramuses, which make MT look very bad. But ppl should know for all the MT rednecks there r also environmentalists fighting for the rights of wolves. I contacted Defenders of Wildlife about The Grey and was told that they are not launching a boycott against it, but are trying to persuade producers to put Defenders’ wolf fact sheets on their website and a link to them somewhere in the credits. I will put a comment in my local paper urging a boycott and explaining the truth about wolves. There is no guarantee it will be printed, though.

I work as a wolf handler at a wolf education facility in the UK. We were approached by the CGI company that animated the wolves to see if they could come and study the movement of our wolves for the film. When we asked about the film and how the wolves would be portrayed they suddenly got very coy and said they would find somewhere else to do their research. I think that says it all about how the wolves are shown in the finished film!

I got a message in reply to mine (which isn’t showing here) which said – “have you ever tried to handle wild wolves? or yearlings captured from the wild?” I’m presuming it’s asked in good faith so the answer is, of course not, that would be foolhardy. Wild wolves can only be handled when sedated (for radio collaring, etc) as they have a healthy natural fear of people. If you cornered one and it couldn’t escape it would probably bite you as a last resort – it would do everything to get away from you first. As for captured yearlings, they shouldn’t be being taken out of the wild as there is no way you can socialise an adult wild wolf to people. Our wolves come from long lines of captive animals and are hand-raised from 10 days old so they accept people. Even captive wolves that aren’t hand-raised are wary of people – we have one as a companion for one of our socialised females and we don’t make any attempts to handle him as it would be too stressful for him and therefore dangerous to us. I’m not saying wolves aren’t dangerous – they are an apex predator after all – but you don’t see bears being demonised in the same way and they kill or injure more people than wolves do!

The Sierra Club just sent me their e-newsletter with a link to an actual radio interview with Joe Carnahan (screenwriter/director) and Frank Grillo (actor) for “The Grey”. They discussed with the Sierra Club interviewer that they were not demonizing the wolf but using it as a metaphor for “a force of nature”. What kind of double speak is this?
The more I listened, the bigger the knot in my stomach got. I think I’m going to be sick……….anyway I am not too big a fan of the Sierra Club at this time.

This is why we need new, young film producers with positive perspectives on these beautiful creatures! I would give anything to make a children’s movie that shines a positive light on wolves. In movies wolves are depicted as monsters, villains, savage serial killers and demons even though a true media representation of wolves should be loving parents, caring families, bravery, loyalty and heroes. I hope that one day at least one of my novels featuring wolves in this spotlight will hit the big screens, it would make my life worthwhile living.

I rescue wolves & wolf -dogs bred by foolish people that think it is a “cool thing” to do so.The abuse and neglect that I see is horrific. If these animals are dumped @ the Pounds in all cities around the US, they are the first to be killed=deemed EXOTIC.
I KNOW how amazing these animals are. I go to schools and lecture all over Albuquerque w/ these animals in hopes of EDUCATING the world, one school at a time, of how brilliant they truly are.
This movie is undermining all of the pains-taking, life- work I have been doing.
As usual, it is GREED & SENSATIONALISM that is propelling Hollywood to continue pumping out more crap.
All for the $$$$.

I think it’s total hogwash that Joe Carnahan claims not to be demonizing wolves. Roger Ebert said after seeing The Grey: “When I learned about Sarah Palin hunting wolves from a helicopter, my sensibilities were tested, but after this film, I was ready to call in more helicopters”. The USA Today review said “the wolves come off as more brutal than bears, sharks, and anacondas combined”.

The truth is ;
Wolves are way better than humans, they’re honest and pure creatures, and they stay away from people, and second of all, better make a movie about humans destroying wolves lives since 1800s.

Just watched this with my husband on DVD and am so upset I can’t sleep. Shame on Liam, especially. What is the current update on efforts to contact his publicist and the movie producers, etc.? What has Defenders of Wildlife (and/or other wildlife organizations) done? Anyone know?
How sad to see this sort of propaganda. Very damaging. This film will be out for years doing more damage to the wolf’s reputation. We need a movie from the other perspective that shows the wolf haters up for who they are. It needs to be a brilliant movie with brilliant actors.
I really wonder if Liam honestly had a clue about the situation with wolves and if not—-again—-SHAME ON HIM.

I know, this movie is a huge moral attack to the innocent wolves. Did you know that the props in thw movie used actual wolf corpses? They also ATE wolf stew..I AM NOT KIDDING, THEY ATE WOLF..this is a total declaration of war to wolves, what will children who saw the movie will think of wolves? I love wolves and I tooo that movie off the TV in my house, everyone complained, but I explained why and agreed..Even people who are not devoted to wolves could notice that the movie was stupid and a lie in all of it’s aspects.

I am very annoyed about how wolves are portrayed in “They Gray” and other forms of media.
