Thank you so much for supporting Howling for Justice and helping it reach over a million hits. You are the best!! I started the blog to give wolves a voice, to speak for them and tell their story.
HFJ began mere months after the shocking delisting of the gray wolf by the Obama administration through the current day. Please feel free to dig into the archives and relive our proudest moments and yes our lowest lows. This odyssey is in it’s infancy. We will not rest until wolves are safe, no matter how long it takes.
We’ve traveled many miles together on our journey and I hope we travel many more. I will always be here for you and the wolves, they are my passion. I promise to continue to speak the truth, it may not always be pretty but you can count on me to give it to you straight, with plenty of opinion.
Here’s to our wolf family. I know it’s been a very bumpy ride but together we are growing a grass-roots wolf movement that will change the way wolves and other predators are treated in the future. Take comfort in that.
I have a surprise for you that I’m determined to finish this weekend. It’s a new feature on the blog and I think you’ll enjoy it. I won’t say more, I don’t want to ruin it for you.

Thank you Allan, the blog is meant to be a reference for wolf advocates, so much of what has happened has already been forgotten but it’s all right here, albeit buried deep in the archives and sometimes hard to find. My project for this year is to improve the organization of older posts so that people will have an easier time finding it.

So glad to have you here Helen, we are growing a grass roots wolf movement that only gets stronger every day. I know at times it seems very bleak but the people who are “managing” our wildlife have been in power for a very long time and have tremendous support from the hunting and ranching lobbies. They are certainly not going to change unless they see the tide is changing and they’ll have to change with it or be left behind. Gone are the days of silence concerning animal abuse, people are speaking out more and more. We can change this one step at a time.

Howls Janet, thank you so much for supporting this blog but more importantly, wolves. I really try to keep you up to date on what is happening in the wolf world, unfortunately this past year has been so full of sadness due to the brutal wolf hunts. At least the Montana hunt is over for the next six months, the Ninth Circuit should be rendering their decision soon on the constitutionality of the wolf delisting rider, if they rule in our favor wolves in the Northern Rockies will once again be protected under the ESA. Let’s hope it comes soon, especially since wolves are still dying in Idaho.
It’s because of all the wonderful supporters of this blog that I’m able to carry on to seek justice for wolves. Thank you again.

Clarence Darrow was brother in law of J. (John) Howard Moore, American zoologist, born in Minnesota, a man who was in his own way an animal rights activist, and author of Universal Kinship, one of the most beautiful books ever written on the relationship of the species to the universe. Moore died by his own hand because it is offered, he was terminally ill. One thing is certain he could no longer tolerate the American wild west. Darrow wrote his eulogy. He left a note asking his wife’s forgiveness. For people who want to build a movement there is a whole library of works by men and women who have been doing just that one book, one lawsuit, one intervention at a time, by opposing vivisection, hunting laws, cruel animal husbandry, (as though all animal husbandry wasn’t/isn’t cruel… like the whales.. the cows, sheep, goats, hens, are slaves… their lives belong to themselves) There is a series called the Kinship Library, a collection that maps the 19th and 20th century rise of animal rights advocacy. Moore’s book is part of that series. I found one very famous book

I did find a google site with related books , Moore’s among them. I tried to read The New Ethic. He was really angry when he wrote that one and I couldn’t go on. That was years ago. Better World Philosophy is another available at google, and I’ll be looking for it. The list is a curious assortment. I had a Kinship Library list of more than 100 publications. I was writing something here from a busy desk when I was interrupted as often happens. I don’t know now if I tried to post.
The story is in one sense disheartening. And this page is devoted to celebration and hope. Clarence Darrow was the brother in law of J. Howard Moore American zoologist, author and a self made ethical vegetarian, in that he can hardly have met more than a few others in frontier America. There may have been Quakers. Was Darrow I wonder? Moore’s closest friend was a man he knew only in letters, Henry Salt, hub of the Victorian vegetarian, therefore animal rights movement in Britain. Moore authored Universal Kinship a beautiful deeply moving and informative book describing the relationship of the species, to one another and to the universe. He was adamantly opposed to sports hunting. Moore took his own life. He was perhaps terminally ill but he was beyond question deeply depressed by his America, a land of interminable cattle drives and animal slaughter. He did feel isolated. He left a note asking his wife’s forgiveness. Darrow delivered his eulogy. Universal Kinship is one in a series of books called the Kinship Library a modern compilation of books on related topics.The eulogy was appended to the edition I read. I had little luck finding the Kinship Library list of titles online. As a series, it documents the rise of animal rights advocacy in Europe and America, the individuals, their biographies, their actions. I had/have a list and or address somewhere and I will post it when I find it. The days of isolation over.

God bless!!!! I know that some of the petitions I sent to the governor’s and the White House had signatures for around the WORLD. Poeple care. Thank God! Thank you for all your hard work straight from your heart. I am sure that there are many more people out there who love the wolf, but don’t know what to do. Wish we could reach all of them. Again, God bless you Nab, and thank you for all the alerts. When it comes to the wolf, I just love having a big mouth. Like you, I shall never stop fighting for them. Never. I feel like they are the only family I have. So, let’s keep fighting, never letting our guard down. The enemies of the wolf are still lurking out there behind trees, under rocks, in governmental positions. (Hrmph!…all the same.)

Thank you Izzy, you are so right, the wolf has friends around the world. I can think of so many groups that are fighting for them. The movement is growing and I know it will continue to grow. It is our mission to spread the word far and wide. We are wolf advocates and we are mighty. We can change the world one step at a time if only we persist and never give up. We are not fighting just for the wolf but for all animals who are persecuted and voiceless. I am not ashamed to say I am an animal rights activist, it is a badge of honor. Thank you for joining me and millions of others around the globe who are standing up and saying NO to the cruelty, NO to barbarism, NO to trophy hunting and all the terrible ways animals are exploited and killed. We have only 20,000 African lions left in the wild, I never thought I would see the lions so decimated in my lifetime. So we fight harder for our beloved wolves. I think of all the battles that have been fought for human rights and have been won. Now we fight for the animals and one day we can say we did a good thing.

Dear Alice I understand your sorrow. I can’t count the times tears have fallen onto my keyboard, relaying terrible news, time and again. It breaks my heart but remember the adage, what doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger. We’ve been through tough, tough times but we’ve also become a wolf family and like the wolves we are dedicated to our family and won’t give up, even under the most adverse conditions. As long as wolves are suffering and dying we have to continue to speak out for them. We are their voice.

I think the movie industry owe the wolfs for there sales in all the movies of Twilight etc. movies!! Lets hear from the actors in these movies and have the back-up and support and get the word out too the young people that watch these movies Harry P. etc. The wolf is a our first dog and has given us our beautiful dogs and breeds of this day. I have two dogs and they are my angels and wilflife is so under attack, the bears, sharks the list goes on!!!! Peace Sheila

Sheila, I love the term “first dog” and so true. There would be no dogs without the wolf. When I hear of the unspeakable things they are doing to the wolves I think of my own dogs, as you said your dogs are your angels. We can’t imagine them suffering yet these heartless people are torturing and killing the dog’s closest relative, who literally gave birth to the dog. Wolves are suffering and dying because of the black hearts of cruel people.

I had an idea today, an inspiration as it were – What about moving towards Federal legislation titled, “Standards for the Treatment of Animals in the United States” that involves practices pertaining to both domestic, livestock, and wild animals; and build solid enforcement standards into the same law. It’s a goal (not a dream) so, let’s figure it out, let’s make it happen!
Keep sharing till we reach 100 million world wide. It can be done!

Donna I have thought so many times, wolf advocates must starting driving the agenda and not just wolf advocates but wildlife watchers and animal rights advocates as well. The Federal Legislation you proposed is a terrific idea because animals are so persecuted and have almost no protection. Just recently PETA sued Sea World. The lawsuit was thrown out but if animals ever gain standing in the courts that will open the floodgates to stronger protections for them.

PETA’s lawsuit against SeaWorld on behalf of five whales has been thrown out of court. In October, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) sued SeaWorld for holding whales as slaves in their marine parks. PETA has been upset about whales performing in shows at SeaWorld for years, but this is the first lawsuit where whales were actually named as plaintiffs, “asking” to be granted the same constitutional rights as people.
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller in San Diego has dismissed the case this week, saying that “slavery and involuntary servitude are uniquely human activities, as those terms have been historically and contemporaneously applied, there is simply no basis to construe the Thirteenth Amendment as applying to non-humans.”
Jeffrey Kerr, attorney for PETA, released a statement, saying, “This historic first case for the orcas’ right to be free under the 13th Amendment is one more step taken toward the inevitable day when all animals will be free from enslavement for human amusement. Today’s decision does not change the fact that the orcas who once lived naturally wild and free, are today kept as slaves by SeaWorld. PETA will regroup and determine how to continue to work for the legal protection they deserve.”
According to SeaWorld, the lawsuit was baseless and wasted the court’s time and money. They have long denied the mistreatment of their animals and have been known for their efforts to promote conservation and preserve the environment.

Recent news carried a story about dolphins, who of their own volition safeguarded human swimmers from death by sharks.. ‘the life guard story’ retold in Pacelle’s book The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them. The family Delphinidae is the largest in the Cetacean order. There must be literally hundreds of stories involving cetaceans and compassionate intervention, on the behalf of other creatures and of men. Where were the lawyers?

Every time I think of the Federal gov, or Congress, or Secy of interior, in charge of treatment of animals I see it doesn’t work. I was thinking of an organization but not affiliated with Federal legislation, but a great group of people who can really be stewards & care takers for animals. For Ex. the wild horse round ups. There is a tremendous amount of inhumane treatment & abuse going on, so in my opinion I’d leave the Federal legislation out, due to what their record is at this time. If any one wants to write to Ken Salazar for allowing wolves to be killed or horses being rounded up & put in tiny pens over crowded & lamed by helicopters chasing them for over an hour, feedback@ios.doi.gov, or Director@blm.gov for Bob Abbey. Bluemoon’s last stand is a perfect ex of what is happening by our secy of interior. Also wildhorseeducation.

The Power of One… is one person’s willingness to help another, one person’s commitment to love the world, one person’s passion to set in motion a ripple of such magnitude that it creates a sea change.
Imagine if a small woman in India thought that caring for the poor and dying was too much trouble we might never have been inspired by a nun named Theresa.
Or, if 12-year old Craig Kielburger had ignored the newspaper report of a murdered Pakistani child labourer his own age, and instead continued his search for his favourite comic strip, thousands of children might still be enslaved.
Robert Kennedy said, “Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
Until your arms outstretched become like wings you will never know what it means to soar to the height of your potential or understand the immense power of your embrace.
Until you look into the eyes of a stranger and see your reflection you will never know the sweet taste of compassion.
And until you experience failure you will never dare laugh at its impotence or realize how much you’re admired for your courage. Is it any wonder why we fall in love with the bravest person in the room, the one who stumbles, then gets up and tries again? It’s because that’s how we want to be!
As Joseph Campbell said, “If you take one step toward the Gods they will take ten steps toward you.”
In the end, the sages, mystics, and elders that I’ve had the privilege to live among in the most remote parts of the world understood that the power in you is connected to the whole. And that as Your light shines, the world is illuminated.
This is the Power of ONE…ONE Person, ONE Planet, ONE People.

This is great. I see that what you’ve posted here is copyright. I’m putting together a campaign brochure, images, text, links. It started out as a letter to Yellowstone Wolf Project donners/stakeholders. National Geographic was a donor. As were Kodak and Nikon. I’ve been collecting addresses of anti sports hunting/trapping groups. My thought is to reach as many people as possible through organizations. People hosting sites or working for organizations are dedicated. People on the ground need to be confronted with the need and empowered.That’s what Nabeki does for people and for the wolves. I’d like to include this statement because ultimately electronic copy of Who Speaks For Wolf should reach as many people as possible. Your statement would work in the close. When it’s ready I’ll be sending a pdf draft to NG for endorsement, as well to HSUS, Born Free Canada/U.S.A., all the U.S. Defender Groups, when endorsed to Pia Berrend, to Janez Potoċnik EU Commissioner for Environment in Europe, environment ministers in Canada and the U.S., film makers. Thank you ‘coriolis’, what you are doing sounds wonderful. You will find Elizabeth Lindsey’s website and Facebook site inspiring. It seems to me we have a common goal and bond; to illuminate the world in the light of wisdom, so perhaps contacting Elizabeth would help strengthen the ‘invisible red thread’ that binds us.
Here’s a small section from a wonderful book, ‘The Philosopher and the Wolf’ by Mark Rowlands about the light of wisdom.
‘The wolf is, of course, the traditional, if unfairly selected, representative of the dark side of humanity. This is in many ways ironic – not least etymologically. The Greek word for wolf is ‘lukos’, which is so close to the word for light, ‘leukos’, that the two were often associated…….for whatever reason Apollo was regarded as both the god of the sun and the god of wolves…..it is the connection between the wolf and the light that is important. Think of the wolf as the clearing in the forest. In the bowels of the forest, it may be too dark to see the trees. The clearing is the place that allows what was hidden to be uncovered. The wolf…..is the clearing in the human soul. The wolf uncovers what is hidden in the stories we tell about ourselves – what those stories show but do not say.
We stand in the shadow of the wolf. Something can cast a shadow in two ways: by occluding light or by being the source of light that other things occlude. We talk of the shadows cast by a man and those cast by a fire. By the shadow of the wolf, I mean not the shadow cast by the wolf itself, but the shadows we cast from the light of the wolf. And staring back at us from these shadows is precisely what we don’t want to know about ourselves.”

Congratulations Nabeki! This is a wonderful blog and an excellent resource for those of us who really want to take action to save the wolves. Some online groups I’ve been in only want to post pretty pictures of wolves and talk about how much they love them instead of actually taking action to save them. This has frustrated me to no end! So thank you for providing facts. tools and resources for those of us who want to actually fight in the “trenches” to save our wolves! Keep up the good work!

I would like to ask for your assistance. There is a survey going around on Facebook created by Anti- Lobo Watch:The Truth About Wolves. And I have been trying to get fellow wolf lovers to participate in the survey so that I can add it to my growing collection of data to show that the majority of Americans do not want their wolves killed but only a few people are voting. The wolf haters are ahead by 100 (135-pro-wolf, 236-anti-wolf). I even posted it in the “Wolves” group with over 2700 members and only 4 or 5 voted. It’s infuriating. Can HFJ help get this survey out on FB? If so, let me now and we can figure out how to get it to you. Thanks for all you do on behalf of our wolves!

Donna…there is a really great survey that was done nationally, showing the majority of Americans supported wolves. I’ll have to find it and give you the link. If you use a survey generated by the anti wolfers they’ll just call out the troops and try to outdo you…hardly worth it. I try to have as little to do with them as possible, they suck all of the oxygen out of the room and then we have none left to concentrate on wolves. My two cents.

Nabeki, Thank you for keeping us informed and working so hard to educate us about the plight of these magnificent animals.I live in the deep south and because there are no wolves in Louisiana very few people even know about what is happening with the wolves in the west.I try everyday to tell people that I know( that do animal rescue and love animals) about what is happening to the wolves. I also refer them to your web site so they can become involved and we can become stronger in our numbers to help the wolves. I appreciate all you do and I thank you for working so hard. Its also refreshing to know there are people like myself out there. I belong to a national rescue group and everyday I pass on your posting to the group for there viewing.I say “Stay strong and we will win the fight”. we must all join hands and howl loudly to make our voices heard for the wolves.

Nabeki, thank you so much for informing us on the wolf situation even when the news is very depressing. I have fought this fight for 40 years now. A friend of mine had a suggestion for a way to get the wolves national publicity. She said Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News seems compassionate about animals and maybe he might help. I don’t watch Brian Williams, but what do you think? Do you know anything about him?

Judy…that sounds like a great idea. The problem with getting in touch with any of these people is they have so many handlers you can’ get past them to get to the celebrity. We have been trying for years to find a spokesperson…but its “crickets”. I’m shocked and stunned by the lack of response from celebs that supposed to care about the environment. Where are they??? If anyone has any national media contacts, please use them.
