Idaho Senate Bill 1305, “Live Bait Wolf Kill Bill”….Descent Into Depravity

The Face Of “Live Bait”??????

Here’s the run down on the “Live Bait, Wolf Kill Bill” that was discussed yesterday by the Idaho SENATE RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE. Seriously this is so upsetting to me I can hardly stand to comment on it. It’s  a witch hunt rivaling the Salem Witch hunt.

There has been no vote on this disgusting bill BUT the committee meets again,TODAY,  Wednesday, February 22, 2012 and their could be a vote. We don’t have much time!!

Group outraged at Idaho SB 1305-Using “Live-Bait” to kill Grey Wolves

BOISE–Friends of the Clearwater traveled to the state capitol yesterday and attended the Senate Resources and Environment Committee hearing for Senate Bill 1305. More wolves will die if sheep grower and Idaho State Senator Jeff Siddoway’s bill is approved. According to Siddoway, as quoted in the Idaho Statesman, “You can basically go after them [wolves] by any means possible. And when I say get ’em, I mean kill ’em.” Over 280 wolves have been shot, trapped or snared in Idaho since the state’s wolf hunt commenced in August 2011.

The bill would allow ranchers to use ultralight aircraft for tracking and killing wolves, as well as the use of “live-bait” to lure in wolves. Although Siddoway claimed that it was not his intent, the broad language in the bill does not require a livestock owner with a kill-permit to protect the “live-bait”, nor does it outline what the “live-bait” could be. “Some might use dogs as bait,” Siddoway exclaimed.

Wolves are a rare and imperiled species in the lower 48, regardless of federal delisting by Congress and President Obama in a 2011 budget rider. “Despite anti-wolf rhetoric and deliberate distortion of the facts, wolves and other top predators strengthen elk and deer herds and allow damaged riparian systems to recover,” Education & Outreach Director Brett Haverstick explained. “Protections are already in place for livestock owners experiencing depredation problems. No one wants to talk about the fact that less than 1% of livestock depredation in the Northern Rockies is due to wolves though. Nor the fact that domestic sheep herds are wiping out wild bighorn sheep. This bill is also cruel and barbaric.”

According to the Environmental Working Group, the Siddoway Sheep Company received over $900,000.00 in wool and sheep meat subsidies between 1995-2010. Siddoway is an Idaho landowner who grazes his livestock on public lands and holds public grazing permits. He is a past president of the Idaho Woolgrowers, a former Idaho Fish and Game Commissioner, and a current state senator. “Siddoway is no friend to wildlife or public lands,” concluded Haverstick.

Just want to remind everyone how we got to this awful place.  Senate Democrats and President Obama removed wolves ESA protections in the Northern Rockies last year via budget rider, turning them over to people like Jeff Siddoway. In other words offering wolves up as sacrificial lambs (pun intended) to their enemies.  Mark Bekoff , professor emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at University of Colorado-Boulder, said it best:

“We killed wolves, we reintroduced wolves, and now they’ve been removed from the Endangered Species Act,” Marc Bekoff, professor emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at University of Colorado-Boulder, said. “So there’s a real ethical dilemma here. You kill animals and you bring them back and then you kill them again and so it’s a waste of time, a lot of person power and money.”

Proposed Idaho legislation could let ranchers use dogs as live bait to kill wolves

Meanwhile, Idaho sheep ranchers made lots of cash raising sheep in 2010. In fact 2010 was a banner year and the income from raising sheep was the largest since 1984.  I guess wolves haven’t killed all the sheep in Idaho.  There  are 235,000 sheep in Idaho and the main predator of sheep is the coyote, responsible for 60% of  sheep loss, followed by the domestic dog at 13.35%.  Wolves control coyote numbers. so fewer wolves mean more coyotes.  Of course, common sense and facts don’t have anything to do with the dog and pony show playing out in the Idaho Senate.

Coyotes were responsible for 60.5% of all deaths, with the next largest being domestic dogs at 13.3%.[7] Other North American predators of sheep included cougars (5.7%), bobcats (4.9%)eagles (2.8%)bears (3.8%), and foxes (1.9%).[7] Wolves, ravens, vultures, and other animals together made up the remaining 7.1% of deaths.[7]”

Idaho sheep, lamb growers report healthy revenue

Posted: Monday, October 17, 2011 12:00 am

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho sheep and lamb growers made more money in 2010 than in any year since 1984, the Idaho Department of Agriculture says.

The agency reports that receipts totaled $22.7 million last year, a 38 percent increase from 2009. Officials tell the Idaho Business Review  that short supplies are driving up prices.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service says the number of sheep and lambs in the state rose 6 percent in 2010 to 235,000, and the American Sheep Industry Association is encouraging sheep ranchers to increase flocks by two ewes per 100 by April 2014.

“We need to fill the traditional market channel to keep American lamb in the largest grocery store chains and in the restaurant chains,” said Clint Krebs, the sheep association’s vice president. “Additionally, we need our wool companies to fill the pipeline for U.S. military use of our wool. Combining the growing ethnic market with the need to keep traditional companies operating means we need to produce more.”

Barry Duelke is a veterinarian in Buhl in south-central Idaho who also has 2,000 sheep. He serves on the board of the Idaho Wool Growers Association.

He said the industry faces challenges with federal range policies, environmental groups concerned about sheep on public land, and an increase in predators.

“We have got an environment community that wants to kill the range industry in this state,” he said.

He also said feed for sheep has become more expensive, and that it’s difficult to find sheepherders who can handle the tough conditions of the job.

“Domestic sheep herders have not been available for a very long time,” Duelke said. “That very definitely has something to do with the attrition rate in the industry.”

CONTACT COMMITTEE MEMBERS

The committee meets Today, Wednesday 22, 2012. Please try to call as many committee members as you can,  I would call the Democrats first, Michelle  Stennett and Elliot Werk. They will  be receptive to your comments. Be polite but let them know what you think of this bill. Also call IDFG, they don’t sound too keen on this bill.

I suggest writing letters to the editor. Spread the word. This cannot stand!!!! We can’t allow animals to be used as live bait, it’s animal cruelty. The bait animals will be in stark terror IF they’re not killed!! And wolves, what fresh hell are they going to cook up for them next? Does Idaho realize what this is doing to the reputation of the state?

Now many people are seeing this information & his photo, & are encouraged to write congress about it & hopefully it will not pass. Take time to do this people so that this craziness will stop.

    • You are so right Danielle…Obama did this. As soon as he took office in 2009 he had Salazar delist wolves and we’ve been fighting this madness ever since, it has descended into our worst nightmare. Obama is clueless about the culture war raging in the Northern Rockies..it was going on before wolves were reintroduced and it will continue if they destroy the wolf. It’s not about wolves, these people hate because they are hateful and vengeful people. You understand it perfectly. Obama paid back all his buddies in the oil and gas industry, who donated to his campaign, by appointing Salazar.

      • Salazar didn’t even need Obama’s permission to do this, or to circumvent the permitting process for oil drilling. Check out “Follow the Money.”

And do you think any of the other candidates presently out there will help us, or any other aspect of the environmental movement? I don’t see that happening.

We have to find and support an independent (“third party”) candidate. What do any of you know about Mark McKinnon and “No Labels?”

      • I don’t know much about him Dana but I agree we need a new party, preferably green but look how the green party devolved and faded away. We need a new third party but the entrenched Washington elite will fight against it.

    • I don’t understand how is Salazar “Bush’s boy”. Salazar criticized Bush repeatedly over the years. Here are just 2 examples out of many:
      http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=6813602&page=1
      http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1209/30453.html

I also do not buy into the argument that poor Obama does not know what is going on and was not aware of what he unleashed last April. He is not clueless, he is a savvy politician who would do anything for votes and power. He is just like all the others ones, whether they are Republicans of Democrats. It is high time we did away with this childish stereotype who views Democrats as perfect and Republicans as the devil on earth. The budget rider was yet another example that proved that there is hardly any difference left between the two parties. Personally, I am neither Republican nor Democrat, I voted for Ralph Nader in 2008.

      • Astrid..I absolutely blame Obama for appointing Salazar and Obama knew exactly what he was doing delisting wolves. He was probably paying back campaign donations from Western oil and ranching interests. The buck stops on his desk. I’m not a Republican or Democrat, because like you I think there is very little difference now. The Dems wanted Tester re-elected and went along with his wolf delisting rider. Tester wanted to boost his anti wolf credentials to “out wolf” his Senate opponent, Denny Rehberg who’s running against him. That’s what it was all about.

      • Salazar worked for Bush and held to his policies- he is on the side of the Corporate ranchers- not the environmentalists- as for Obama- I doubt he really knows the details- the basics yes- and for that I don’t like his policies- but Salazar is a clearly bought and sold boy- so he disagreed a few times with Bush – big deal- while I would like a liberal too – a real progressive a vote for a third party at this unorganized stage is exactly what the RW wants- divide the Dems- I’d rather keep lobbying to raise awareness and demand better treatment for animals and the environment

        Like

    • I agree but its not acceptable – as for a third party – I’d love it- but it’s not organized and will only help the right get in as Nader did – those votes if for Gore might have changed the world

    • Sadly Damielle, this is all Obama’s doing. Not sure why he delisted wolves as one if his first official acts but he did. Maybe it was to pay back campaign donations from big oil and big ranching. I know one thing, none of this would be happening if not for that singular act, when he delisted gray wolves in the Spring of 2009, mere months into his first term.

    “RE: SB1305
This is probably the worst plan ever conceived. Using family pets, human companions as bait to catch a wolf? That is the most flawed plan ever hatched. There are so many other predators out there that will enjoy a ‘snack.’ Bears, coyotes, mountain lions, etc. There are a heck of a lot more of them then the wolves that have been reduced to near extinction. The wolf is not aggressive. There are predators out there that are. You chain a little dog for bait and it will become a snack for one of the other predators…that’s a guarantee.
“Coyotes were responsible for 60.5% of all deaths, with the next largest being domestic dogs at 13.3%.[7] Other North American predators of sheep included cougars (5.7%), bobcats (4.9%), eagles (2.8%), bears (3.8%), and foxes (1.9%).[7] Wolves, ravens, vultures, and other animals together made up the remaining 7.1% of deaths.[7]”
Please, stop this war on wolves. Let them live in peace. God put them here for a reason. I believe that God’s plan is better than the guns, barbaric traps, poisons, helicopters, snowmobiles, etc.”

I used some of the facts in the link just to let this committee know that they aren’t pulling the wool over anyone’s eyes.

But make no mistake, it’s the grass roots movement that has the real power. We just have to learn to wield it before they kill every last wolf AGAIN.

But sheep also die from non predation as in disease, weather, I’m always amazed how these ranchers act like they love their livestock when most of them are sent to slaughter. I have been researching the backgrounds of some of the loudest “anti-wolf” critics, and have found that most of them are not true ranchers, most are con-artists posing as ranchers and collecting LOTS of US Government “Farming” subsidies, in the millions. Most of these people I researched thus far, did not grow up rural OR ranching, but come from major metro areas and have married into ranching families, or simply took up the hobby for financial gain through free money, called Farm Subsidies. They are cons and cowards, and appear to be out to kill both the wolves and the REAL rural people and ranchers, whose lands they would like to control. Do research on the names, Then research their family members and the EWG Farm Subsidy database. Those hollering the loudest against wolves are often politically active and have LOTS of money. REAL rural people are NEITHER, for the most part. I think this entire issue is much more complex than the idiots running around “Crying Wolf”. They are just falling for the massive propaganda the Corporate so called “Ranchers” are drilling into them- for what benefit? THINK.

I do not believe it helps one bit to make this or other issues pertaining to protection of wildlife and/or environmental conservation a Democrat-v-Republican or Left-v-Right issue….The truth is,the scapegoating of wolves began long before Dems or Repubs existed at all in places far, far away from Norther America. In fact, love of animals is one of the very few unifying things I know. I have friends who are impossibly conservative who would die for their toy puddles and other friends who would kill anyone who ever harmed their little hairy Lapsa-somethings-or-others. I send them all the petitions and they all sign. If you think about it, we really can’t afford to divide ourselves at all. And we need something broader than partisan political support. We need enforceable standards for the treatment of animals – maybe the Federal Animal Welfare Act can be applied to challenge what states do….I don’t know but I do believe that the “red” and the “blue” can stand together in the “white” zone. Peace tonight, especially to the wolves in Idaho

    • Donna I agree but Obama’s betrayal was so mind boggling that it’s hard to ignore. It all stared back in the Spring of 2009…everything people worked so hard to achieve has been destroyed because of that one decision. The Republicans are not any better to be sure but who ever expected that from a liberal President? It felt like a punch in the stomach.

    RE: SB1305

This is probably the worst plan ever conceived. Using family pets, human companions as bait to catch a wolf? That is the most flawed plan ever hatched. There are so many other predators out there that will enjoy a ‘snack.’ Bears, coyotes, mountain lions, etc. There are a heck of a lot more of them than the wolves that have been reduced to near extinction.
I believe that God’s plan is better than the guns, barbaric traps, poisons, helicopters, snowmobiles, etc.

    • Excellent Iszaria and Werk is one of just two Senators who voted against this outrageous bill. But the Republicans ignored all the negative comments..people melted the phone lines over there at Idaho’s state capital but still the vote was 7-2…right down party lines.

  23. As someone who has respect for our wildlife and its impact on our eco systems…I am appalled at USA & Canada for slaughtering wolves with no valid reason!! Its not as though these wolves are guilty of any offense’s…so why let them and their broods be hunted and slaughtered??? Why would you encourage killing of an animal who is so very vital to nature and its cycle?? I think Obama was a BAD choice for a leader and I hope he realizes the negative impact this will have on any state or Province!! You all disgust me…..I hope karma comes back on you!!
