Such horrible news. This disgusting bill was voted out of committee today by 7-2. Both Democrats voted no. Now it goes to the full Idaho Senate for a vote. It will have a first, second and third reading…then a vote. If it makes it out of the Senate it goes to the Idaho House. You know Otter will sign it if it clears both houses. This is the worst possible news. I feel so bad, I gave you good news about Oregon’s bad bill 4158 and now this.
We need to gear up for a major push to stop this horrible bill!! We can start by contacting members of the Idaho Senate.

Here’s the run down on the “Live Bait, Wolf Kill Bill” that was discussed yesterday by the Idaho SENATE RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE. Seriously this is so upsetting to me I can hardly stand to comment on it. It’s a witch hunt rivaling the Salem Witch hunt.

Group outraged at Idaho SB 1305-Using “Live-Bait” to kill Grey Wolves
BOISE–Friends of the Clearwater traveled to the state capitol yesterday and attended the Senate Resources and Environment Committee hearing for Senate Bill 1305. More wolves will die if sheep grower and Idaho State Senator Jeff Siddoway’s bill is approved. According to Siddoway, as quoted in the Idaho Statesman, “You can basically go after them [wolves] by any means possible. And when I say get ’em, I mean kill ’em.” Over 280 wolves have been shot, trapped or snared in Idaho since the state’s wolf hunt commenced in August 2011.
The bill would allow ranchers to use ultralight aircraft for tracking and killing wolves, as well as the use of “live-bait” to lure in wolves. Although Siddoway claimed that it was not his intent, the broad language in the bill does not require a livestock owner with a kill-permit to protect the “live-bait”, nor does it outline what the “live-bait” could be. “Some might use dogs as bait,” Siddoway exclaimed.
Wolves are a rare and imperiled species in the lower 48, regardless of federal delisting by Congress and President Obama in a 2011 budget rider. “Despite anti-wolf rhetoric and deliberate distortion of the facts, wolves and other top predators strengthen elk and deer herds and allow damaged riparian systems to recover,” Education & Outreach Director Brett Haverstick explained. “Protections are already in place for livestock owners experiencing depredation problems. No one wants to talk about the fact that less than 1% of livestock depredation in the Northern Rockies is due to wolves though. Nor the fact that domestic sheep herds are wiping out wild bighorn sheep. This bill is also cruel and barbaric.”
According to the Environmental Working Group, the Siddoway Sheep Company received over $900,000.00 in wool and sheep meat subsidies between 1995-2010. Siddoway is an Idaho landowner who grazes his livestock on public lands and holds public grazing permits. He is a past president of the Idaho Woolgrowers, a former Idaho Fish and Game Commissioner, and a current state senator. “Siddoway is no friend to wildlife or public lands,” concluded Haverstick.

Just want to remind everyone how we got to this awful place. Senate Democrats and President Obama removed wolves ESA protections in the Northern Rockies last year via budget rider, turning them over to people like Jeff Siddoway. In other words offering wolves up as sacrificial lambs (pun intended) to their enemies. Mark Bekoff , professor emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at University of Colorado-Boulder, said it best:
“We killed wolves, we reintroduced wolves, and now they’ve been removed from the Endangered Species Act,” Marc Bekoff, professor emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at University of Colorado-Boulder, said. “So there’s a real ethical dilemma here. You kill animals and you bring them back and then you kill them again and so it’s a waste of time, a lot of person power and money.”

Meanwhile, Idaho sheep ranchers made lots of cash raising sheep in 2010. In fact 2010 was a banner year and the income from raising sheep was the largest since 1984. I guess wolves haven’t killed all the sheep in Idaho. There are 235,000 sheep in Idaho and the main predator of sheep is the coyote, responsible for 60% of sheep loss, followed by the domestic dog at 13.35%. Wolves control coyote numbers. so fewer wolves mean more coyotes. Of course, common sense and facts don’t have anything to do with the dog and pony show playing out in the Idaho Senate.
“Coyotes were responsible for 60.5% of all deaths, with the next largest being domestic dogs at 13.3%.[7] Other North American predators of sheep included cougars (5.7%), bobcats (4.9%), eagles (2.8%), bears (3.8%), and foxes (1.9%).[7] Wolves, ravens, vultures, and other animals together made up the remaining 7.1% of deaths.[7]”

Idaho sheep, lamb growers report healthy revenue

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho sheep and lamb growers made more money in 2010 than in any year since 1984, the Idaho Department of Agriculture says.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service says the number of sheep and lambs in the state rose 6 percent in 2010 to 235,000, and the American Sheep Industry Association is encouraging sheep ranchers to increase flocks by two ewes per 100 by April 2014.
“We need to fill the traditional market channel to keep American lamb in the largest grocery store chains and in the restaurant chains,” said Clint Krebs, the sheep association’s vice president. “Additionally, we need our wool companies to fill the pipeline for U.S. military use of our wool. Combining the growing ethnic market with the need to keep traditional companies operating means we need to produce more.”
Barry Duelke is a veterinarian in Buhl in south-central Idaho who also has 2,000 sheep. He serves on the board of the Idaho Wool Growers Association.
He said the industry faces challenges with federal range policies, environmental groups concerned about sheep on public land, and an increase in predators.
“We have got an environment community that wants to kill the range industry in this state,” he said.
He also said feed for sheep has become more expensive, and that it’s difficult to find sheepherders who can handle the tough conditions of the job.
“Domestic sheep herders have not been available for a very long time,” Duelke said. “That very definitely has something to do with the attrition rate in the industry.”

I suggest writing letters to the editor. Spread the word. This cannot stand!!!! We can’t allow animals to be used as live bait, it’s animal cruelty. The bait animals will be in stark terror IF they’re not killed!! And wolves, what fresh hell are they going to cook up for them next? Does Idaho realize what this is doing to the reputation of the state?

i find the mindset of the politicians and ranchers so overwhelmingly sickening that i Could simply quit trying to make my voice heard:BUT !!!THAT IS JUST WHAT THEY WANT.. so i will continue to support and speak out for th e wolves with renewed energy .this is what i can do as one individual..strength in knowledge as well as our numbers..the unity of our voices can bring about change..it may take longer than any of us want..but i am willing to keep going as long as it takes.positive thoughts and actions.,together..awareness of and concern for the plight of the wolf is spreading.it will be a hard battle.i am grateful for others who feel as i do.. so..call the numbers, listed sign petitions..thank you nabeki.

I already do, as well as any tourism. I also boycott the same for Wyoming and Montana. This means alot of extra checking out the companies listed on anything bought, but well worth it. They can’t hear anything that doesn’t deal with money, so that’s where you have to hit them. Cattleman’s Association, Hewitt Packard (I ran across them in one of the posts sent to me, apparently they deal in computer parts etc. ), potatoes, and anything else that comes from these states. They have nothing I want badly enough to help finance the slaughter of wolves. In Idaho’s final draft on wolf management they also plan to exterminate the weasel, coyote, sparrow and jack rabbit as pests. I’m sure the list has been added to since I last checked.

Please, write Obama asking him to put the wolf back on the Endangered Species list, permanently. A couple of the committee members made good points today why SB1305 should not be passed, at least not now. One said that it could cause the wolf to be listed again on the Endangered Species list. Anne…I’m going to list Salazar, Obama and the Idaho Senate for contacts to write to. There is also a Care2 Petition in the works but I believe a lawsuit will be the only thing that will stop this. We also have a few other ideas but they are not firm yet. The entire situation is out of control.

When the Sakineh event unfolded I signed an international petition. I fwd’d to head of CUPE at my workplace. He sent it nationwide. It was a personal decision on his part. Me too for that matter. I didn’t want that woman stoned to death. You have 1 mill hits here. How many unions represent the people who write to HFJ? How do you think the people of America will react to this Live Bait Bill? My guess is outrage. Will they need time to think before signing a petition if at the same time they read about Live Bait they look at PETA’S campaign photo? Suddenly cognizance. That’s what happens when wildlife management is passed down to state control. I don’t know if you like this idea but I offer it for your consideration.

Agribusiness has nothing at all to do with any kind of natural respect or reverence for life that is a part of wilderness ethic as precticed by First Nations.

I will personally boycott everything having to do with Idaho if this bill passes. No vacations, no products, NOTHING to support a state that passes a bill which makes me ashamed to be human. Furthermore, I will tell everyone I know about the sub-human atrocities involved in this bill, and recommend that they also share that information far and wide, as I will. Pass the bill and no one will come to Idaho again. There are so many other beautiful places to go, why choose to be surrounded by cruelty and ignorance?
Think long and hard, legislators, before casting a vote. The repercussions are significant.

Defenders Of Wildlife has shown ranchers how to put up flanderies. Which are fencing wire with red flags on them to blow and scare the wolves away.
They also pay for more hay for the cattle and extra range riders to ride the ranges.
It is funny not ha ha, but the Double Circle Ranch in Arizona has never had to kill a wolf. They said that the wolves and cattle live in harmony. They have range riders which ride the ranges to keep watch. As of yet they have not had to kill a wolf. They believe the wolves have a right to live.

Barbara….good for the Double Circle Ranch!! I don’t believe ranchers should receive one penny for any wolf kills. It just puts them in the victim handout category. Coyotes are the main predator of cattle but all predators are only responsible for one percent of losses. They lose more cows in one day to disease and other non predation causes then they do to wolves all year. I’m so sick of hearing about cows and elk i could scream. The poor cows end up in the slaughterhouses and the elk are hunted every year. We should be talking about how many elk the hunters kill. There are one hundred fatal hunting accidents annually in the US and Canada and another 1000 wounded. A hunter shot a little kid in the leg in Oregon. It was an an accident but hunting is dangerous not just to hunters and animals but to innocent bystanders. And yet all they can talk about is wolves, wolves, wolves.

Sports hunting is animal abuse. Obama is really all over the board. Yes to delisting. He keeps Guantánamo but signed 2010 a bill to ban crush. And it strikes me that anti crush laws may be an access to change. Hunter’s post videos of deer bowed in the spine. They chat online about watching them die and relive the animal’s agony. What is that if not crush? How does baiting differ from crush?
I’d like to take this idea to a lawyer and so I shall. I’ll send a query to lawyers working with defender groups.

coriolis….I think there will be a lawsuit if this bill passes. I believe it violates the agreement with USFWS..the bill is so loosely written..anyone can say they are a rancher with one cow and start baiting wolves. This bill could be what pushes everything over the edge.

Idaho Officials are nothing but wolf kill crazy. When I was in Idaho in 2007, they had newspaper clippings up about wolves being killed.
I had a wolf at the time. The people told me to keep her away from them, if wanted her to live. I told them they do not understand the nature of the wolves. They said that the wolves are killing their cattle and bringing down the elk and deer population.
I told them that is a bunch of lies from the ranchers and sports hunters.
They told me to keep her away from them or she will be dead.
(Which I lost because of the man I was with. But she is in a better home now. She has a loving family now. She also has an abandon golf course to run in and play in.)

These people are crazed with hatred but they are a small majority, there are many good people in Idaho who’s voices are being drowned out by these loudmouths. That has to change.

I once talked to a rancher, he told me “everything with fur is a threat to my lifestock”, ever since I eat less meat

I haven’t eaten meat in thirteen years and just gave up chicken and sea food, except salmon, which i eat onre a month. It feeld good not to eat meat. You just have to eat lots of beans and whey protein to stay healthy!!

You need to make a statement these legislative people will hear – financial impact! BOYCOTT ANY PRODUCT FROM IDAHO (and MONTANA) until the insanity stops. MONEY TALKS. If you spend ANY MONEY IN IDAHO at this time you are really saying they don’t seserve any sanctions. They need to know it’s NOT OK!

The People of Idaho and the Idaho Legislature needs to hear a message that can be clearly understood! Financial Impact . BOYCOTT ANY PRODUCT/SERVICE FROM IDAHO UNTIL THE INSANITY OF SENATE BILL IS STOPPED. If anyone spends any money in Idaho or on a product/service from Idaho at this time they are supporting the Idaho Senate Bill 1305. IDAHO NEEDS TO KNOW IT’S NOT OK !!

I was wacthing a movie/documentary show on netflix about wolves near Yellowstone and what happens to them when they get out. They should non-lethal methods taught be the Fish and Game department. (BTW this is when the wolves were protected) So i am thinking if you could deal with this then, Why cant you do that now? I am hoping these people will stop this. now they are taking there anger out on other animals by chaining them up and waiting for something to come along and snatch it. Theoreticlly that will drag the wolves there expecting food every time only making the problem worse. So they make no since. Are the ranchers going to stay awake all night and wait and wait and wait for something to come along? Can anyone explain this to me? I dought it even if it was from the person who created the idea?

Instead of chaining live animals up, here’s an idea. Why don’t we chain up unarmed wolf hunters and let the wolves have at them. Of course the wolves would not be interested, as they have much better taste than to chew on something so disgusting and dripping with ignorance.

I would write Obama a letter but as you see when he came into the White House he said he was going to get his kids a shelter dog /rescue ,one of the breeds he was looking for was a Portuguese Water Dog ,Guess who breeds Portuguese Water Dog ??? Didn’t know Ted Kennedy’s dogs were rescue!!! My guess he could care as much about the wolves in Idaho as he does the dogs and puppy’s in rescues or shelters …

Don’t forget to mention that predators in general contribute to a very small percentage of all livestock deaths! Not mentioning this important fact makes it seem that coyotes are responsible for most livestock deaths and are vicious killers, when in reality this couldn’t be further from the truth!
Coyotes are not only like wolves biologically, but also socially. Both species have been demonized and persecuted over the centuries, and both have been viewed as a severe threat to livestock, game, and human safety. There are anti-coyote people just like there are anti-wolf people. The anti-coyote people have slogans such as “save a deer, kill a coyote,” and tend to have the “kill them all” attitude, just like the anti-wolf people do. Although it is true that coyotes kill livestock, they do not kill them nearly as often as people believe. Not mentioning that predators in general contribute to a very small percentage of livestock deaths with those statistics will give the anti-coyote people the perfect opportunity to demonize the coyote.
Although they are being slaughtered mercilessly, wolves are lucky in that they are classified as “Big Game,” which affords them some protection. But coyotes are offered little to no protection. They are either classified as “predators” or vermin to be shot on sight, or as (small) game/furbearers, but often with year-long seasons and no bag limits. Although they are not endangered and never were threatened with extinction, coyotes still need to be protected from hunters and trappers. Thousands of these “prairie wolves” are killed each year!
I understand that you are just trying to show that wolves are responsible for very few livestock deaths, but it is just as important to also mention that predators in general are responsible for very little livestock deaths. Not only will this help the coyote, but it will also help their bigger cousins, the wolf!
And I really hope this bill does not pass! Combined with the federal government’s aerial gunning and the state’s hunting and trapping seasons, it will spell the end of Idaho’s wolves!

The rider was placed on the budget bill by Democratic senator Jon Tester and Republican Mike Simpson, both from Montana. Montana’s other senator, Max Baucus, voted for it. But the rider was placed by a Democrat and a Republican, so it is not accurate to say the Democrats did it.
I would also point out that if President Obama had vetoed the bill–which was the bill for the entire federal budget–the entire federal government would have ground to a halt. Even I would not have vetoed it if I were president.

Actually Ruby that’s not true. A Republican (Simpson ID) inserted a wolf/rider into the House bill but it was removed when the bill hit the Senate. Then it was placed back in the Senate bill by Jon Tester with the blessings of Harry Reid. There were three riders in the Senate version at the end. A rider to defund planned parenthood, a rider to defund Obama care and the wolf rider. Harry Reid pulled the Obamacare Rider and the Planned Parenthood rider out of the bill and allowed the Senators to vote up or down on both of them and the riders were defeated but because the Dems were such cowards, they didn’t want to vote up or down on the wolf rider and be on the record as having dismantled the ESA and delisted wolves, so Reid kept it hidden in the budget bill with Obama’s full knowledge. If Obama cared about the wolves or the ESA he would have used his influence to get that rider removed, or any of the Democrats could have had the wolf rider removed but they didn’t. The reason? They didn’t want it removed. This rider was a bone thrown to Jon Tester to help secure his re-election. The Dems cared more about keeping control of the Senate then the wolves. So they threw Montana and Idaho wolves under the bus and voted for the budget bill with the rider attached. That’s what happened. The President knew, Harry Reid knew and ALL the Dems knew. It had nothing to do with a government shut down. They’ve played that brinksmanship charade over and over again.
