After a grueling night of watching Wisconsin pass their horrendous wolf hunting bill, now this, it’s almost too much to stand. The wolves are suffering and dying because of Obama’s decision back in the Spring of 2009 to delist them and we’re never been able to overcome that. Just once the wolves were free, in August of 2010, when Judge Molloy relisted them but we had so little time to celebrate before the haters figured out how to get around the courts and politically delist wolves. I hope this decision is appealed. This is a very, very dark day for wolves and wolf advocates.

The ruling from a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Congress had the right to intervene when it stripped protections from wolves last spring.
Lawmakers stepped in after court rulings kept wolves on the endangered list for years after they reached recovery goals. Wildlife advocates claimed in their lawsuit that Congress violated the separation of powers by interfering with the courts.
But in an opinion authored by Judge Mary Schroeder, the court said Congress was within its rights, and that lawmakers had appropriately amended the Endangered Species Act to deal with Northern Rockies wolves.
That amendment marked the first time Congress has forcibly removed a species’ endangered status. It was tacked onto a federal budget bill by Idaho Republican Rep. Mike Simpson and Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester.
“This case has made it clear that those who persist in trying to manage wildlife through the courts, in spite of all scientific evidence that this species has recovered, no longer have a defensible position,” Simpson said Wednesday.
Michael Robinson with the Center for Biological Diversity, one of the groups that sued to restore protections, said a Supreme Court appeal was possible but no decision had been made.
“We’re very disappointed and very saddened,” Robinson said. “Hundreds of wolves have been hunted and trapped and snared, and they are essential to their ecosystem.”

parts of Montana, ranchers and local officials frustrated with continuing attacks on livestock have proposed bounties for hunters that kill wolves.
This is from the New York Times article. I feel this is untrue and prejudicial. Lets write in and tell them this is inaccurate. Its the least we can do for the bloodbath that is coming..

Ignorance wins out again over fact about these poor hunted predators.
Ranchers can be reimbursed for cattle lost to wolves by specific organizations trying to save this majestic animal.
There is no reason for this slaughter. Man should hang his head in same those that support this conviction will not stop until there is no wolf left. Speak out for those that can not speak for themselves.

i know it is not a practical line of defence rght now, but as long as animals would not be considered worthy of moral consideration as individuals, because they have what we call when it comes to us – soul – as long as they speak about “management” and “control” they will allways be able to twist things to their interests. biologists should make a huge change in their notions in this respect. killing animals has to stop being a routine, regular way of solving ecological problems (problems that men creat but animals allways pay the bill).

When animals are used for food the indians said a prayer for their soul and thanked them for giving their life to feed their children. I think the Great Sioux Nation should take back their land.Indigenous people have an important role to play. Their way was better. The anthropocentric world view that drives the use and abuse of animals wild or kept is embedded in western culture arising as it does from a major precept held in common by the monotheistic religions of the west, man’s dominion over the animals as well as over women. There were and are groups within each of these belief systems whose world view is more tempered by compassion, Quakers, the Russian Duhkobors, Sufis, the Muslim Druze, beyond that many individuals throughout history, it seems more now than ever. There are inter faith animal rights societies. We now have a politicized femininist world view challenged by legal opposition to women’s rights and socalled subrevolutionary acts of terrorism by crazy people who drive their cars into abortion clinics. You just can’t give up. No one who cares should feel defeat only determination and love for the wolves.

There’s nothing morally right in our laws. What is the point of law, when it protects only the greedy and blood-thirsty? The pointlessness is all the more aggregious when the greedy & blood-thirsty are protected, by treating the majority as non-existent. Sadly, the government shows no sign of improvement, and it probably will take an act of God.

I’m sorry, but that type of response, Bert, isn’t going to help our cause. Praying to god to remove man? What about the good people, the one’s who are innocent, the one’s who care? We are animals too, and that’s important to remember. Praying will not help the wolf. The only thing that will help is for the legal system to protect it, and in this case, it has failed. The wolf is again the looser.

Denise, I did not mean to upset anyone..I believe that the world would be a better place without man in it..With that said, I guess I’ve reach a point of total disgust about the world we now live in. I pray for the wolves that perhaps they can survive the onslaught that is about to hit them. It makes me angry and sad to see these magnificent animals treated as if they have no worth or right to life. As long as they are demonized this cycle of death perpetrated on them will continue. Man has a great need for bloodshed,and he will go anywhere he can get it.In the end like someone else here said the animals always loose.

John, I had a sinking feeling when I listened to the Pasadena hearing on tape. The justice that wrote the decision, it seemed to me at least that she was very hard on our lawyers and seemed to be asking the majority of the questions. For most of the hearing it was all about precedent, you wouldn’t even know they were discussing wolves. It was disheartening to listen to and I thought then and there that we had little hope of winning with that panel. I didn’t want to say so because it could have gone the other way but my gut told me different. I don’t think they gave the goings on in the Northern Rockies any weight at all …it was all about precedent, which the Ninth Circuit set and which Judge Molloy hoped they would consider reversing. He was wrong on that count.

“Saving a Beautiful Icon, the Wolf”. Hopefully I will draw in a lot of members. I will post the horrible decision made by the Court of Appeals, not only on my site, but on others.
I found that petitions to Salazar and the governors of the states that are for the slaughtering do not seem to do much good. I had signatures from all over America, and the world…even Yemen. I think the government officials probably shredded them as they most likely do anything they don’t want to be found out.
I do thank you for all the hard work that you put forth, but now we all have to ban together, and go to the Supreme court.
Please tell me what I can do. I’m physically impaired on oxygen with COPD, but nothing wrong with my fingers and my brain. Should we write individually to the Supreme Court? How do you make up a formal request? An ‘Urgent’ formal request. If I can get the right address, I could post it and either have every one sign a letter, or better yet, write their own, and send it to whomever we need to contact.
Can’t sit back until the last effort has been made….and if that fails…..we’ll start over again, and again.

I cannot believe that the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found this unconstitutional delisting to be legal! Time to take this case to the Supreme Court!
Scientists, and ONLY scientists, should be determining if a species has recovered or not; politicians should NEVER make that decision! And even then, scientists should make their decisions based only on what the science says, and never on what politicians (and other non-scientists) want! Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case, and decisions that should be based only on science (such as wolf delisting) are also being based on politics. GET POLITICS OUT OF SCIENCE AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT!!!
Although the USFWS considers the Northern Rocky Mountain Gray Wolf to be recovered (based on the fact that the population size has exceeded the recovery goal), some independent scientists do not consider this wolf population to be recovered: http://www.cfr.washington.edu/classes.esrm.458/bergstrometal.pdf
Personally, I believe that the wolf should be restored to all suitable habitat in all major regions of its former range: the Northern Rocky Mountains, the Southern Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains, the Southwest, the Pacific Northwest, the Great Lakes (which has successfully been done), the Northeast, and the South/Southeast. In fact, when I become a biologist, I plan on trying to make nation-wide (and world-wide) wolf recovery a reality!
Now, with that said, I am not against the delisting of recovered wolf populations (and the “downlisting” of wolf populations that have recovered enough to not be endangered, but not enough to be fully recovered). After all, the purpose of the Endangered Species Act is to protect species, subspecies, and populations that are endangered (and threatened), and once they have recovered, it is only proper to delist them (or to downlist their status to threatened, if they have recovered enough to not be endangered but not enough to be fully recovered), as by then they would not be endangered (or threatened) anymore. However, I am against the delisting of wolf populations that are not recovered, regardless of if the population has reached and/or exceeds recovery goals or not. And, as a future scientist, I am also against the delisting of any species by non-scientists (and politicians in particular)!

A few things have to be added to what I’ve stated above. Firstly, the Great Basin and the Midwest (if there is enough suitable habitat) need to be added to the list of wolf recovery regions. Secondly, I feel that the Great Plains region should be divided into two separate regions: the Northern Great Plains, and the Southern Great Plains. Thirdly, I might divide the South/Southeast into a few separate recovery regions (how that will be done I’m still deciding on). Fourthly, when I said that wolf recovery has been successful in the Great Lakes, I was only referring to the (North) Western Great Lakes (Upper Peninsula of Michigan, [northern] Wisconsin, and [northern] Minnesota); recovery still needs to occur in the rest of the region. And lastly, I should mention that in a few of the regions, wolf recovery will involve more than one species (for example, the Great Lakes region recovery involves Canis lupus and Canis lycaon). When that is the case, each species should be given its own recovery plan.

And I highly disagree: I will continue to pray for the wolves, because I believe it will help. I really do hope that the “wolf managers” of these states will stand up to the special interests as they did in Idaho when the situation got so ridiculously out of hand, and that they will include in the hunting numbers those wolves that are poached and those killed from alleged livestock predation. I can hardly wait until November.
I’m seeing the phrase “as they [the individual state] sees fit” with regard to managing wolf populations, and it doesn’t elaborate on how or if any scientific evaluation enters into the equation at all. It will be interesting to see if the states can manage their wilflife (I tend to doubt it as they can’t seem to manage anything well on their own) and if they will walk both sides of the street and ask the Federal government for money and assistance, all the while decrying the big, bad restrictive government interfering! I had to smile also when I read that WI is saying that wolves are killing dogs and mostly hunting dogs, when they don’t have to hunt with dogs. How else are the wolves killing the dogs?

All an appeal does is review the decision a lower court for a mistake in law regarding the delisting. This decision today in no way redeems the wolf hunts, initiated immediately after the delisting. I prefer Judge Malloy’s assessment myself:
“As Molloy put it, “the way in which Congress acted in trying to achieve a debatable policy change by attaching a rider … is a tearing away, an undermining and a disrespect for the fundamental idea of the rule of law.”
And further:
“Molloy repeatedly wrote that he felt tied down by untested law, but that he had to follow the court’s tradition of respect for congressional action. However, he warned that future moves would get greater scrutiny.
“It is not the role of the judiciary to write the law,” Molloy wrote. “In my view, the Ninth Circuit’s deference to Congress threatens the Separation of Powers; nonspecific magic words should not sweep aside constitutional concerns.”
So, Congress did something unethical, just skirting legality, which they are so adept at. 😦

The 9th circuit court of appeals just upheld congress’s right to intervene with the delisting of wolves based on politics and not science, as it was intended. None of the states have demonstrated an ability to “manage” wolves since being delisted IN ERROR! Wisconsin has now passed a horrendous bill that caters to special blood thirsty interests…not to what the majority of folks want…WE THE PEOPLE WANT WOLVES PROTECTED …WE DON’T WANT THEM KILLED! DON’T WAIT UNTIL THERE ARE LESS THAN 100 WOLVES LEFT ALIVE IN MONTANA OR IDAHO BEFORE YOU RELIST THEM…PREGNANT MOMS AND PUPS ARE BEING KILLED TOO FOR NO GOOD REASON…DO AN EXECUTIVE WRIT TO PUT EM BACK ON THE ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST WHERE THEY BELONG NOW! Thoughts on Wisconsin Anti-Wolf Campaign
That 411 allows for reimbursement of dogs killed hounding wolves is irrational. ( Same reward for bears ) There must be some lobbyists who will benefit, as it’s neither rational or fiscally prudent to reward individuals to kill their own dogs, unless they don’t want them in the first place.
Judge Mary Schroeder must also be involved with lobbyists. We find a lot of judges ‘going corporate’ these days, as Citizens United has opened a pandora’s box of government corruption. I received only one ‘real’ response ( not a auto-reply) from the Wisconsin representatives and thanks for that one. It was from a senator who opposed the bill.
I wish I could attend the 21st event.

Strange that Idahoans will allow JR Simplot mining company to poison the SE portion of the state with selenium, but fight for killing wolves with a vengence. Mutant fish, sheep and cattle kills have been documented by IDFG and a local Coalition. Now Simplot wants to increase mining that would poison the Yellowstone River drainage… but Idaho can’t wait to kill wolves.

Having raised two wolf pups to adulthood I can honestly say that their personalities and behavior are not innately bad as cattle and sheep ranchers would have the uneducated public believe!! Had it not been for serious pressures from the public, along with the Sec. of the Interior who himself is a 5th generation rancher, Pres. Obama may not have been so quick to delist the wolves. This same cabinet Secretary would also have buffalo, wild mustangs and burros, just to name a few taken off of the protected list.

The wolves were made part of the budget by the Republican tea bag Congress. This has never been done before. They threatened to shut down the government if the wolves were not delisted. I received an e-mail from my Democrat Congressman and Senator in Colorado that they did not like having to do this, but they had no choice. The American people need to realize the Congress has tremendous power and they need to vote for legislators that care about humans and animals. This is not the Republican 1%. More Democrats and Independents care about the wildlife than Republicans. Republicans don’t even care about people, only their corporate friends like the ranchers and hunters. Congress is up for vote this year, so lets get them out of there and save lives. I wish there were Native Americans running for Congress. I would vote for them.

That panel of 3 judges have no idea what brutality and savagery grey wolves have endured, and now will continue to endure, at the hands of state ‘mismanagement’. I wish that they could be in the woods as a witness to the stalking, luring, shooting with arrows and bullets, the trapping, the poisoning, the wanton torture of these innocent animals. The judges who doomed the wolves today are safe in their antiseptic worlds, and will go home to a nice warm dinner. They won’t hear the cries of the dying or the longing howls for missing pack members or the whimpers of starving pups. For the wolves and for us, there is no peace tonight…or any night.

5 Supreme Court Justices were chosen by George Bush. They have done tremendous harm to this country. They voted to make corporations people, and this opened the door for corporations, even international corporations to donate large sums of money to get their candidates elected, such as the Koch Brothers with Scot Walker. 1% Supreme Court is pathetic. Just think, if Wis. had not voted in these legislators the wolves wouldn’t have to die. I’m ashamed of Wis. voters who put these people in office. Now, so many people and the wolves have to suffer. In addition, have respect for the Native American people Wis. This was their land, not yours, and these are their wolves, not yours. Thank you Ojibwe for fighting for the wolves. Don’t give up.

Hunting for pleasure is sadism and involves the certain knowledge of the victim’s fear, suffering and death. There would be no ‘pleasure’ but that the animal was sentient. Sports hunters post their kills, UTUBE and relive and share with other psychotic individuals the death throws of their victims. Sports hunting also involves hormone addiction, epinephrine. A different rush, a different hormone. You can read the thrill talk online posted by hunters. There are equal signs between crush and sports hunting. The wildlife management angle at preserving the right to torture and kill while drinking and littering the countryside with porn mags is psychotic behaviour made clean. Never forget the profit motive. A hunter pays his government for the ‘right’ to enjoy his aberrant pleasures. The number of successfully prosecuted cases of child sexual abuse in family is dramatically higher among sports hunters when compared to any otherwise equivalent demographic. After long and arduous thought I have concluded that President Obama knew what the consequences would be if he delisted the wolves. By pitting the “gun happy” governmental officials in each state against the conservationists, he has created a diversion so that the American citizens will not notice that he is taking away our Medicare, Social Security and other rights to support his programs. He is very devious and was not born in this country, so technically, he should not be allowed to be President.
As a member of the Islam faith, he believes that the “afterlife” is more important than being alive. That is how he can justify the torture and killing of our wolves. He is sending them to a better place.
I am afraid that the slaughter of our wolves is only symptomatic of a much bigger problem that we have in our country where these animals that are essential to our ecosystem are being destroyed for the political and economic gain of special interest groups.
If we could create legislation that NO HUNTING be allowed (for any reason) on designated State and Federal Lands and set up a program to enforce it, then wolves would have a safe place to go and they would not be forced again into extinction.

We have heard it from too many extremist tea party people to buy it. You have no proof, and you will not win any converts this way.

Whoa! I write letters to editors, sign petitions, and have sent letters to every freaking state rep and sen in idaho, wisconsin, montana, wyoming and their governors and even the tourism bureau folks and ken salazar and I have written Pres Obama pretty much daily asking for wolves to be relisted…and I will continue to do it…I just have a real problem with your inserting lies in this blog…Pres Obama is legally president…Hawaii is part of the USA…and he is a Christian…we do have separation of church and state….so even if he were a Muslim, so freaking what? He just happens to be a Christian..and he is not trying to take away Social Security, Medicare, etc….he is trying to help us keep them…it is the freaking tea party that has kept the republican brand alive that has taken over their party and has spun the dialogue about what’s really going on and is in the pocket of the oil and coal companies and against the environment and animals and workers….I am not happy that the extinction rider was left in by the Senate and by the President….and I will continue to use my words to fight for my beliefs…for the wolves and the polar bears and the seals and the whales and the dolphins…I have written scathing but eloquent letters to the Canadian government, the Japanese government…you get the idea…it’s bad enough what is going on – the war on wildlife..the war on wolves..we need to all unite to help them….we don’t need to divide ourselves with untruths….

As a 5th generation cattle rancher Ken Salazar has been targeting Mexican wolves from his neck of the woods and gray wolves to the North where many wealthy ranchers allow their cattle and sheep to graze on public lands as if those lands were privately owned. In the case of a “proven” wolf depredation the rancher is fully reimbursed the approximate market value of the animal lost by the U.S. government…..but obviously this isn’t enough to appease their blood thirsty appetites. therefore all wolves must die for roaming o’er public lands and doing the things that wolves do as part of their natural survival. It’s like Civil War General Scott saying of the Native Americans, “The only good Indian is a dead Indian”. So Sec. Ken Salazar makes it a point to say of all wolves, being the true and fine cattle ranching man that he is.
Something I don’t understand, which I’m certain I’m expected to, is why he has targeted buffalo who don’t carry or transmit brucellosis disease nor destroy the grass lands by pulling the grass out of the ground by the roots as cattle do, or the enmity he has toward wild mustangs, burros and grizzly bears. I suspect Sec. Salazar is the type of man who would either put his own mother-in-law out for eating to much, if he didn’t shoot and have her mounted for his trophy wall that is!!!

We need to come up with our own newspaper I know its expensive but if we could get donations we could write the truth and get it in print and out there for the public to learn the truth instead of listing to these horror story lies about wolves.

President Obama was born in Hawaii and is a Christian, not a Muslim. I can’t believe intelligent people who read this blog would say this crap. Recently, there was a call here to not say partisan things and you can’t get any more partisan than this right wing conspiracy stuff. President Obama is a good man who made a mistake with Salazar and seems to have no desire to take on controversial wildlife issues, but a Republican takeover of the federal government would be a nightmare for wildlife and the environment that gives me chills to contemplate.

Yes, there are many other good things the administration and Dept. of the Interior are doing, but the wolf delisting stands out because it was so glaringly underhandedley done. We’re waiting for them to correct this mistake.
But I agree the alternative would be bleak – with Rick Santorum and others advocating the pillaging and plundering of the Earth because it says so in the Christian bible, and cutting regulations. A true nightmare.

Sadly Larry, I think that is the only thing that will get people to take notice enought to stop this – when the inevitable hunting accident or tragedy will occur. We don’t seem to be able to have any foresight or want to see into the future at all – just want it all right now.

One more thing I question:
I’m not comfortable with wolf numbers allowed to dip to below 100 before the Federal Government steps in either. If 300 was the target recovery number, why allow the sustainable population to be cut by half that? It seems dangerously low for genetic diversity and does it take into account animals that would perish by natural causes and poaching?

Y’all the bottom line is – it is about Ranchers and their friggin cows and sheep !! Beef and mutton. Leather and wool .
They think they have thright to rule this country because of their cows and sheep . And where are the BOYCOTTS for Beef & Mutton , leather 7 wool ?!
They make their demands and line the pockets of the so-called politicians . And then the Government issues orders for the wolves , horses and burros to be removed and destroyed – to give their cows and sheep more room to graze – ON PUBLIC LAND !!
So what is the answer ? How do we stop this from happening ? Come up with that answer and then we have a game plan and a solution to STOP THE INSANITY !!

Oh, and I forgot another very important animal – the American Buffalo in Yellowstone National Park . The last of the orignal wild herds – Our heritage ! And what does this have to do with wolves ? All these animals have a common factor – wolves, mustangs, burros, and buffalo . The graze and roam the lands – PUBLI LANDS – that the Ranchers have basically been sole use of ! So they kill they wolves – that the ranchers claim kill their cattle – and the ranchers get reimbursed for that cow that died. And it has been proven – they do not all die because of wolves – you know that . Well , they claim the sa,e for the buffaloes – mix breeding , tuberculosis , etc – but they catch and vaccinate these buffalo . But many are captured and slaughtered. These Buffalo BELONG to the American people on Publi Land – Yellowstone .The same goes for the mustangs and the burros – they are treated as brutally as the wolves and buffalo . Many are shipped to Canada for slaughter . Only now our Government has passed laws tp establish slaughterhouses for Horses in the USA !!
It all boils down to 2 things cattle & sheep , & money !And the power of these ranchers to use their influence over Politicians for VOTES !! That is the Bottom Line !
How do I know all this ? Because I fight for the buffalo, mustangs and burros – like I do Our beloved Wolves ! And all of thm are under the same 2 people that our wolves are – Obama and Salazar- the Secretary of the Interior & the Director of the BLM ( Beaurea of Land Management ). We desperately need for the 2 of them to be out of the WhiteHouse in the upcoming election ! Salazar is a Cattle racher – therfore a very huge conflict of interest in his position over BLM – and his reason for his intense hatred of wolves !! He was appointed by Obama to his position .

This is a WI state rep’s “creative” justification for wolf hunting:
Rep. Christine Sinicki, D-Milwaukee, offered an amendment requiring hunters who kill wolves to eat them. She said the amendment would help aid in job creation for the state.
“What this amendment does is basically say, if you kill it you got to eat it,” Sinicki said. “That means that we’re going to have to have people who process the meat. There’s some jobs there. [They’re] going to have to have chefs that prepare that meat, too.””
Our country has gone crazy.

Ida….this is the craziest thing I’ve every heard. No thank you, I do not want to eat canines and neither does anyone else. This is her trying to justify the unjustifiable by pretending that people are actually going eat wolves. And what makes it even more outrageous is all the complaining about wolves carrying tapeworms, even though most canines carry worms. Montana even has a provision that you can leave a wolf right where you killed it if you don’t want to handle it for all the fraidy cats that are so worried about “catching something”. The entire situation has moved to the realm of insanity!!!
