I love Adele’s music and so do millions of people around the world. I was sitting here writing a piece on wolves with her voice blasting in the background, so I thought why not put if up on the blog to remind everyone we’re all human and not just wolf advocates. We have personal lives, loves and heartache, just like everyone else. And yes we sometimes try to relax and take our minds off the unrelenting horror that is Wolf Wars.
I’ve been contemplating the Wisconsin wolf hunt and Ninth Circuit loss for several days. To have them both come down at the same time was surreal and definitely a huge blow to wolves and wolf advocates. But it’s not the end, not even close. We have lots of work to do though. I’ll be blogging about it this weekend, giving you my perspective but in the meantime I listen to Adele and try to remember what it was like to be normal and not wake up every single day with a heavy heart, knowing that one more terrible thing has happened to wolves somewhere in this country and that it’s going to take a hell of a lot of work to build a strong grass roots wolf movement from the ground up.

Oh I so relate! Since my awakening… Since seeing the truth of what our species does to those of others – Every night holds terrors and every morning an urgency to fix it all. To correct what happened when I was not “on watch”. But of course, none of us is responsible for it all – Nor can any of us make it all right… Still, there is no normal – Ever again.
My heart breaks for the wolves and their dog brothers, and cat sisters and cousins who are cows, dolphins, birds, mice and monkeys… All of them – All who are my family too. I’m so very sorry for what we’ve done – And what we continue to do with our savage “humane” superiority.
Hope lies in awareness – And that’s why we keep fighting. Thanks for all you do to make it so.

Provoiked…I wanted to speak touch on the pain of being a wolf advocate, the heartbreak, the sleepless nights because i know that each and everyone of you is suffering as well. How could you not, we have to tolerate the ugly pictures of dead wolves, the hundreds and hundreds of wolves who’ve been ruthlessly killed for bloodsport, the endless defeats in and out of court, knowing that wolves are unprotected. The helpless feeling of wanting to do more. I am with you.
This is a difficult journey but I’m committed to it for as long as it takes to see wolves safe. But it’s alright to admit how hard this journey is and will continue to be.

thank you for these positive thoughts and words.my painting exhibit of wolves opened last night in an art gallery . i was both touched ,as well as heartened, by how many people can be moved by the visual arts.if i ( and many others)can help raise awareness of what is happening to all our wild creatures through creativity and the ARTs ,then i think we might get to the heart of more humans. i hope my work will be part of this surge of positive thought and action ,especially for the wolves. thanks to all who connected with my work..

I can’t get the wolves off my mind. It is heartbreaking, but it is better to have a broken heart than no heart, better to be connected to nature than not, and better to have a conscience than those who don’t care!

Ellen..I couldn’t agree more, even though this is a very difficult journey it’s better to feel then to be heartless. Going through life lacking empathy, thinking torture, cruelty and hatred are the norm. You couldn’t have said it better!

Provoked, Its as if I wrote every word myself. I am having the same feelings too. I could not sleep last night. I kept having visions of wolves being chased though the woods at night being hunted for the thrill of it. I am now haunted by there loss and I have a broken heart. I woke up this morning thinking, what can I do today to stop the madness.

Bert…I wanted to share just a little piece of myself to let you know and every one who is in this fight that we all are experiencing the same emotions. How could we not after living through years of heartbreak? I feel your pain, believe me, wolves are always in my mind even when they’re not. For my sanity I try to wall off thoughts of wolf torture and death, it would drive us all crazy if that dominated our every waking moment but even so we can’t get away from it. This is how we’re able to move forward, knowing we cannot stop, not ever, until wolves have some semblance of peace once more.
It’s so heartening to know we’re not traveling this road alone.

Ah, I miss the good old days where the wolves were safe and the Wolf Wars was not having an influence on my everyday life, where the only thing I worried about was getting good grades (aka A’s) in my classes, but even then I never worried 24/7 and was able to relax often…but alas, I think those days are over and will never be again, ever since Congress forced the delisting of the Northern Rocky Mountain Gray Wolf last year.

CarlaVelosoWolf…It seems like a million years ago since Wolf Wars began. Some days feel like an eternity. What a unprecedented betrayal by Congress. I wonder if they lose any sleep over the suffering they’ve caused and are still causing. They need to be reminded how we believed in them to do the right thing and instead they turned their backs on the ESA and wolves for a Senate seat.

How about the trust that animals place in people?
I have a pet theory, no doubt ludicrous to many and probably wrong but nevertheless, that Richard Nixon was a threat to industry, ranchers, sports hunters and all who deal in the suffering of animals and the destruction of wilderness for cash; that Watergate was a put up job to get him out of office fast.
God knows what he might have done to protect water rights, old growth trees, the fish and the mammals in the seas, what conflict over oil rights might have ensued, on and on.

There’s the betrayal of people by people. Then there’s the betrayal of animals by people. Many people stop eating meat on account of the cruelty that farm animals endure, the meaness and betrayal they suffer. Tolstoy thought there could be no political change until people took The First Step. He wrote an article by that title. By that he meant divorcing oneself from the cruelty and exploitation of ranching beef. You can find it online.

I am also devastated that there are people in America, who can be so cruel. I watched a video.
I watched as the plane landed and then taxied after a wolf running at full stretch through the snow.
Then this demon leans out of the window and shoots the wolf. It was so casually done that it was ugly.
Why? What for? There is no challenge in killing from the protection of a plane, with a high powered rifle.
What was this demonic passenger doing? What did he hope to achieve? From what I could see, they left the dead wolf there and just took off!
I don’t understand what they are doing it for! Surely they cannot be that ignorant or superstitious that they believe the myths, legends and nonsense? Mankind has advance so far with technology, but some have fallen behind in kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling.

And Silent Spring, what a masterpiece, what a wake up call, yet all these years later the environmental movement is being overrun by the very same forces that Rachel Carson was warning the world about!
In my mind the world is divided into three types of people, those who have zero respect for wildlife and the natural world and use it for their own pleasure and gain, those who love and respect nature’s wonderful bounty and all it gives us and third, the apathetic who are almost as bad as the first.

If anyone is in any doubt about the universal principle that says for every bad deed done in the world, someone somewhere is doing a good one, then take a look at what this guy here in England has been doing for 30 years. i know that there are many such places all over the world, asking for little, but giving much.
I sponsored a wolf just before Christmas and was kindly invited over to this sanctuary two weeks ago and as you can see, its a wonderful home for wolves. I ended up spending 3 days there! I hope to return many times, and there are many supporters who visit, and volunteers who give their services for free. We should salute such people and perhaps you guys in the States can contact all these sanctuaries and include them in the ‘campaign’. They have much to offer I am sure.
I am currently trying to write an 800 word essay for submission to the BBC Wildlife magazine about my visit (with the sanctuary’s permission) and although this particular place seeks no publicity other than what it perceives is sufficient, its so important that we and the public know about them. Thank you.

I think that the deepest tragedy facing the gray and Mexican wolves is that in the beginnings of time Creator gave man full dominion over all of the animals and the earth, along with the birds of the air and the fishes in the many waters. Since that time mankind, particularly more in these United states as compared with other countries, has done everything conceivable to destroy all of it……primarily due to greed and the want of money!!! This war on wolves, buffalo, mustangs and wild burros is driven by sheep herders and cattle ranchers who truly believe that their animals alone have some God given right to graze and transverse public lands as if those lands were privately owned. And, just like the Koch brothers, Donald Trumps, Mitt Romney types of folk…………people with BIG money should always have everything their way because of their possession of large amounts of money.
As for me I agree strongly with Chief Dan George who said, to paraphrase,”Creator put the animals here for our enjoyment and the uplifting of our spirits. When all of the animals have died man too will follow in their steps and die from lonliness of spirit!”. Try running that by a blood sucking hunter to think about. I suppose when all of the animals are gone the hunters will simply have to commence killing off other people!!!

Wolfeagle,Such powerful strong words. If you have a moment research ( Google) Red Wolf. The Red Wolf was once roaming and living free all across the gulf states from Florida to Texas and were hunted to near extinction. In 1980 Wildlife in Fisheries rounded up 20 of the only surviving Red Wolves left in the world and moved them into captivity and started a breeding program. Currently, Red Wolves are living at Pocosin Lake National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. It is now home to the only wild population of endangered Red Wolves that only number around one hundred. There are 20 other locations across the country trying to bring the red wolf numbers back up but those animals are living in captivity. Its sad to think that because of hunting and loss of habitat these wolves almost went extinct. I believe if the trend continues with the Gray Wolves in the Rockies this will be there fate.
At one time some of the Red Wolves were released into forest in the smoky mountains region but because there was a lack of food for the wolves they had to be moved to insure there survival.
If man would end his need for greed perhaps these animals would have a chance to live as they were meant to and have there place on this earth.
I enjoyed reading your post and I can feel your passion. Never loose that spirit and fight that you have for the Wolves. Bert C.
