Action Alert From Friends of the Clearwater: Speak For Wolves in Boise on March 21

Update #2: March 22, 2012

There was a good showing of wolf advocates at the Idaho Commissioners meeting in Boise yesterday. Wolf supporters were represented well, with just a few anti-wolfers. People spoke of the importance of wolves to the ecosystem, the lack of representation of Idaho citizens who support and care about wolves and other wildlife. I’m very proud of each and every person who cared enough to take the time to speak out for wolves. In the end their testimony seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

The commissioners don’t appear to care what wolf advocates think. It looks like they’re going to increase the limits on how many wolves can be taken per hunter, expand trapping  and generally make like as miserable as possible for Idaho wolves, who are now caught in perpetual hell.

Like:

Increase bag limit to five each for hunting and trapping in the Panhandle, Palouse-Hells Canyon, Dworshak, Lolo, Selway and Middle Fork wolf zones.

Extend season on private land in Panhandle zone.

Add trapping season in Units 19A and 25.

Increase harvest limit in Southern Mountain zone from 25 to 40.

Increase season length in Beaverhead and Island Park zones to close on January 31.

Update: March 22, 2012

I will update you later today on the Boise event but everything went well and there was a good turnout of wolf advocates!!

End the Wolf Slaughter-Speak in Boise on March 21

MARCH 19, 2012

MOSCOW, ID — Over five hundred Northern Rocky Gray Wolves have been slaughtered since Idaho and Montana declared war on wolves last fall. The hunting season for wolves in Montana closed in mid-February with 166 wolves killed. But the trapping and hunting of wolves continues in Idaho, with 362 killed so far, and certain hunting zones open until late June. Such killing zones encourage the killing of cubs in their dens. The state of Idaho has also killed wolves via aerial gunning, and was close to passing a bill that would have permitted ranchers to use “live-bait” to lure in wolves and kill them.

Science demonstrates wolves are keystone predators, and play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem health and resiliency. Since wolves returned to Yellowstone National Park over fifteen years ago, researchers have documented an increase in biodiversity, with riparian areas being restored, aspen stands regenerating, and habitat for birds, fish, and amphibians benefiting.

“The ranching industry of the West has no use for wolves or biodiversity. And a predator-free landscape is just what some outfitters in this state want,” said Ann Sydow, organizer for the Northern Idaho Wolf Alliance. “Influential outfitters want the state management agencies to do whatever it takes to artificially boost elk populations so their clients can kill them for trophies.”

Biologists note that killing apex predators does not induce elk recovery. Rather, large-scale killing of predators usually has detrimental effects on the entire system. While wolves generally take the old, sick, and weak, trophy hunters can kill elk important for breeding.

The American people have invested hundreds of millions of tax dollars in species recovery since the US Fish & Wildlife Service reintroduced Grey Wolves in the Northern Rockies in 1995. Members of the public will speak at the Idaho Fish & Game Commissioner’s meeting in Boise on March 21st 600 South Walnut, at 7pm.

“I am an American taxpayer and Idaho resident who is fed up with this deliberate extermination of an icon of wilderness–and an animal sacred to many indigenous peoples,” said Dr. Catherine Feher-Elston, an environmental historian, author, and wildlife rehabilitator. “The states of Montana and Idaho are destroying America’s investment and subverting the will of the people.”
A lawsuit challenging the Congressional budget-rider that delisted wolves from federal endangered species protection last year has yet to regain federal protections for the iconic species.

“The federal government needs to step in and relist the Gray Wolf. It is abundantly clear that states like Idaho cannot manage wolves responsibly, “said Brett Haverstick, Education & Outreach Director for Friends of the Clearwater, a plaintiff on the lawsuit. “Killing half the wolf population is not managing.”

Region-wide pro wolf rally in Boise, Wednesday March 21st. This is an important opportunity for us to speak out against the brutal slaughter of gray wolves. The public rally will occur at 5pm outside of the Idaho Fish & Game headquarters, which is located at 600 South Walnut. If you cannot attend the rally, the Fish & Game Commissioner’s are accepting public comments starting at 7pm in the “Trophy Room” of the building.

I will come to Boise for the meeting with
Fish & Game if you (or someone) will give me exact driving directions to the Fish & Game Headquarters. (Fly free)….on Southwest (hubby a retired Captain). I’ll be flying in from Albuquerque, NM that morning (first flight). Can rent a car or maybe someone could pick me up at airport (4:35 pm flt arrives. ) Can get myself back to the Airport next morning by taxi.

Looking into how I can get to Wisconsin…SWA doesn’t fly there…
        will look at the map.

Keep up the excellent work….I couldn’t get into the signing in
previously on the website…but wrote letters to all the State
Senators, etc. & called their offices.

Google Wisconsin Legislature and you will find them. Look for Kleefish. He is an assemblyman and his wife is Lt. Gov. He’s the fool that is talking about a sandhill crane hunt. • Thanks Wizard….the wolves need all the support we can give them. Idaho has killed 362 wolves in the hunt and it won’t be over until June 2012 in the Selway and Lolo. I’ve never witnessed anything so brutal, it’s a feeding frenzy. To think Congress, USFWS and Obama unleashed this on the wolves knowing full well the consequences.

It’s a wolf holocaust and yet where is the media? I’m stunned by their silence. They should be ashamed and everyone that had a hand in this should hang their heads in shame.

Lets face it; a predator-free landscape and fat, complacent elk make life easier for their members. But the rest of us Idahoans including some hunters and ranchers, don’t want our wild lands managed either as a game farm or a cattle ranch.
Take the words “wolf” and “elk ” out of the equation and what you have is Idaho Fish & Game coming close to killing off our last few hundred of an animal fresh off the Endangered Species List, in order to artificially drive up already high numbers of an another animal, for the benefit of some special interest groups. Between the barbaric wolf hunting methods and groups centered around hating wolves, Idaho has earned a reputation for animal cruelty. People from all over are boycotting our goods, and God help our tourist industry.

I wish everyone who is able to be in Boise well and I hope your voices are heard…I do not believe the Feds will ever resume care over wolves or other animals….The trend is to move away from this issue and let the states struggle with it….What is possible, however, is that the Federal government adopt and impose a set of standards of practice upon all states, essentially expecting a certain standard across the USA. Those standards would include ways of managing natural resources (i.e., preservation of the resource – NOT – special interests of hunters and cattlemen) as well as standards of treatment of wild animals (i.e., fair practice and science based hunts – NOT- extreme measures and cruelty)…Maybe a state or two will adopt such an attitude and draft standards and other states could follow…In any case, killing wolves is a major source of income for states like Idaho and this is what’s really happening there. I intend to find a way to gather a group to work on that as soon as I am not quite so personally bogged down…Again, good luck in Boise!

I’m still somewhat stunned that one of the legislators I emailed sent me pictures of ‘wolf kills’ that are already all over the ‘net. does she think her pretty little packets of store bought meat grew in the container??? NO predator kill is pretty and that includes man’s meat packing plants. one of my state legislators wrote back to me when this whole ‘state management’ fiasco hit. he said that it is now in the hands of the state(s) to do their own management. I need to write again and see if he still thinks slaughter is good management!

I’m always amazed at this line of thought also – it seems politicians and the anti-wolf crowd try to bank on what it is they think we don’t know, or play to people’s fears – but they only succeed in insulting our intelligence.

I heard back from a few but all except her were totally against live bait usage. and, as sadly amusing as it may be – I did see a post about a year ago where someone SERIOUSLY said that people should stop killing animals for meat and just go to their local grocery store and by the already packaged meat – that way no animals were killed. There is something else I would like to bring to your attention. According to the Defenders of Wildlife, the federal government planes are ready to gun down 75 wolves in the Lolo Valley (out of about 100). Yes, the same federal government whom we are asking to relist the wolves, and in the same planes proudly decorated with “paw print” decals, one for very wolf shot down. I thought that we were past this, that the 14 wolves gunned down earlier this year in the same area assuaged Idaho’s thirst for blood and murder at least for this season.
The Defenders are saying (in the letter I have just received today) that they are working with their “allies, including hundreds of wildlife supporters in Idaho”. Did they approach any of view out there? Are they a presence either in Idaho or in Montana?

  21. Have any of you guys ever heard of Wolf Biologist Gorden C. Haber? While doing research for my essay on wolf hunting, I came across one of his articles, and I want to share it will all of you. It’s called “Biological, Conservation, and Ethical Implications of Exploiting and Controlling Wolves,” and it basically describes why wolves should not be hunted and should only be controlled under certain circumstances. Someone should present this as scientific justification for ending the wolf slaughter at the rally tomorrow.

    • Yes Carla…Gordon Haber was a force of nature, a dedicated wolf biologist who’s research on wolves is invaluable. He was dedicated to the wolves of Denali. Sadly he was killed in a small plane crash in 2009, just as the first wolf hunts had begun in Montana and Idaho. He is sorely missed. Friends of Animals was a major supporter of his. His death was a huge loss for wolves and wildlife advocates.

  31. Just returned from Boise, Idaho Fish & Game meeting last night
Before the meeting started,we were outside on a very busy street…
Sandra & Sandra (2 of us from different states) held a very large sign
up…and we waved at everyone who drove by! The majority of
drivers refused to look at us….but a guesstiment is about 1/4 of the
cars, honked & waved back. Now what that told us was …that
all of Boise is NOT FOR SHOOTING THE WOLVES. (REMEMBER
    THIS)

We signed in to speak, Dr. Catherine Feher-Elston spoke about
traits and life styles of wolves & the history of persecution and
how the Native Americans revere wolves..

There were three of us plus the Clear Water people…and a packed
crowd! To shorten this mini report, the majority of the people there
were for the wolves, stop the killing (local citizens). The room was vary crowded…and it was large room…somewhere around 60 to
75 people plus the Fish & Game, one Senator, and local officials.
I would like to say also, that Fish & Game treated us well ;let everyone speak for three minutes.

However, it was obvious and several local speakers stated that
the Fish & Game did not have a viable plan; that they had no
idea (they admitted this) how many wolves they had in Idaho,
could be that the 500 wolves now dead could be MOST OF THEM,
or that there could be 500 more!

This was the most impressive info to me….that they really had no
idea how many wolves there are in Idaho. Wyoming knows how
many they have, and so does Montana. I have no idea if
the State of Michigan has any idea at all. SOMEONE NEEDS TO
TAKE ON THAT JOB (VOLUNTEER, HELP OUT!). WE NEED TO
KNOW (A STRONG ESTIMENT) of how many wolves are in
    Michigan.

I spoke, but my comments were totally differerent than anyone elses.
I spoke about the subsidies that every farmer & every rancher in this
country get on either a monthly or annual basis. (I’ll find out…think
it is annual). Subsidies are and have been given out for years &
years (can find that out also)…goes back before WWII for sure.
This money is paid in the event the weather doesn’t cooperate…
leaving crops unusable or cotton or beans, or grain, etc. insuffient
for the nation. This also covers wolves killing cattle, sheep, etc.

My idea is that they are “double dipping.” Even if the wolves are
killing the cattle, sheep, etc., that is what the subsidies are for.
(remember this) They are not supposed to be getting all that money
$90,000 per year for a small farm or tiny ranch) as much as a
$1,000,000 if it is a very large ranch or farm.
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These farmers/ranchers should not be getting both …money and
dead wolves. Subsidies are for the climate and hail, weevals AND
WOLVES OR DOGS OR CATS, OR SNAKES….GOES ON….
    DESTROYING THE CROPS/CATTLE.

    Since I am a retired Marketing/Management Professor,& know something
(not all) about ranching, I am going to develop a PLAN….and it will
be BOLD. THOSE WHO LOVE WOLVES MUST PLAN TO BE
BOLD ALSO…OR THIS ISN’T GOING TO WORK.

WE WILL ATTACK….IN A POLITICAL WAY.

TUNE IN FOR THE NEXT INFO…PLAN…AND I AM OPEN
TO IDEAS (I really don’t know everything, but how many of you
remember when Roe v Wade was fought by my friend Sara
Wedington in the Supreme Court…and won for women the’
right to CHOOSE how large a woman’s family would be?
After that was won, Idaho’s courts had to permit women’t rights
or be in contempt by the Supreme Court in DC. WOMEN all
over America quit buying pototoes (1988 ?)..lasted six months
& Idaho women today have the right to choose.

TO BE CONTINUED. TUNE IN. (sorry if there are misspelling…
tired from the quick trip & back to Idaho.

    • Great to hear from you Sandra, thank you so much for the update. We were all anxious to hear first hand how it went. It sounds like you got a very good turnout. I know about the subsidies that ranchers and farmers get. Some get them not to grow crops or raise cattle on their land. They basically get money to do nothing. It’s ridiculous. It’s how the government manipulates the prices for them, so I guess that’s why they call them subsidies. The same with the Wildlife Service goons, they are paid with taxpayer money to rid the land of predators and other animals for agriculture, another subsidy. We are paying the government to kill our wildlife.

As for subsidies they receive for wolf depredations, they should never get that money. Wolves kill so few livestock it doesn’t even register. Ranchers lose thousands of livestock to non predation and they aren’t paid for that. It’s a good ole boy’s system. How many businesses in America are propped up the way ranching and farming are?

Thank you again for taking the time to speak out for wolves. Looking forward to part two of your comment. Get some well deserved rest.

wouldn’t have to besold on the website….just an address to
order them….I don’t need to make any profit & would be willing
to create them, pay for them…we can all participate in the
getting the word out….send notice to all wildlife organizations.

I am willing to start by doing this with a donation of $1,000
to pay for the stickers, the $1.00 coming into the postoffice
box would pay for more. Give them two…to pass on to a friend.

  32. No takers? Maybe my offer is not clear…I am willing to donate
the $1,000 for bumper /bumper (how is that spelled?) stickers.
If we need to order more, the $1.00 for two will build for further
needs like a banner to carry, etc.

    • i have no problems putting bumper stickers on my car for a good cause. I personally don’t believe ‘ban beef, save wolves’ is a good idea. nothing against vegetarian/vegans but that is too close to their stance that everyone should be veg/fruit eaters only.

    • Sandra….I will email you about your proposals and generous offer. Also Howling for Justice can now be reached privately on Wolf Warriors (FB). http://facebook.com/wolfwarriors. The new timeline format allows for private mail and I think that would be a better format to discuss specifics.

      • Tell you what, I am already vegan…have been for years…I would love to display whatever bumper sticker idea you come up with…it is very challenging not to want to do to them what they do to wolves….can you imagine hunters and the commission in traps…being ignored? I DO BELIEVE THEY WILL REAP WHAT THEY SOW…just praying it will be real soon. Count me in for whatever letters need to be written to whomever…I am writing the VP and the President daily (sometimes twice)..have written both my Senators and Rep too…really like the attitude Sandra has (and her first hand experience from Roe vs Wade)…Right on!

  33. Then, I am open to other wording but it needs to fit the cause.

Let’s play with some wording. Save the Wolves ……doesn’t really
tell what is going on. from what?…..and because this is happing in Idaho, many people don’t even know where this state is…much less
what is going on. If one isn’t tuned in to Idaho….or the
northwest….or wildlife…they may not know what is going on.
I am open to any suggestions. ANYTHING….WE CAN WORK
    FROM THERE.

  34. The banner needs to refer to the cause somehow.

Ranchers killing wildlife; Ranchers killing Gray Wolves

Something…banners are to let others know & that the person
with one on their car supports the wolves or that they
do not support the killing of them. Different verbage.
Help me out. Nothing is too extreme…and it has to fit in
fairly big lettering on the banner or no one could read it….
Banners are 11″ long, and 3″ wide. Big lettering so it
    can be read.

  35. I wish I could have gone to Boise – I WANT TO POINT OUT AN ERROR IN THE BODY OF THE TEXT ABOVE; WOLVES BABIES ARE PUPS NOT CUBS.

    • I saw it Maggie, some people do call them that but I chose to leave it because I did not write it. But we have much bigger problems then whether someone calls a wolf pup a pup or a cub.

  36. Since I travel with a wolf, I don’t get near certain states these days.

However, the comment above about “What is your bottom line issue?” on Obama’s site is appropriate:

Those who chose to fear and hate any species that they cannot control without killing, will never, repeat, NEVER change.

Since voter turnout rarely exceeds 60% of eligible voters anywhere in the US, You ALL and everyone who expresses offense at this genocide, ecocide, murder of a highly intelligent social species that far, far antedates humans on this, its continent, YOU must vote out every legislator and elected administrator who voted for those “management” bills.
You would do well to deny any who act behind gun or trap or poison, any professional position in governing your state.

This was my bottom line years ago, and I will vote against Obama and his rancher Interior Secretary – and long have told them that I will speak and act to deny them continued power.

Compromise because you fear, repeat, FEAR that his opponents will be elected, is inappropriate if you trade lives for presumption that any wolves will in the future be saved by this man or any who have used their power to allow this killing.

I have been right up close to animals having their throats crushed in predators’ jaws on more than a couple occasions, and I have to side with the natures of each animal.
This is not an issue in which humans can be adequate judges. We are merely fearful, vengeful chimp relatives immigrated from Africa, victims of our own fears.
The wolf is a carnivore, and whether or not his native land has a balanced ecosystem at present is clearly not a problem that this, our species can “manage.” .

    • Michael, I use to have a wolf/ tundra and mexican gray mixed. I defended her to narrow minded people. She is no longer with me, because of circumstances beyond my control.
Idaho, Montana think wolves are dangerous. BAH. they are very loving animals.
Wolves take better care of their packs than some people take care of their own families.

  38. GRRR sounds like the commissioner was not impressed with our presentation…..what now>>?
Attending the meeting the next day (the day after the testimony), the commissioners discussed what they had heard. According to reports from the public who listened, Commissioners had no sympathy for any of the testimony presented and felt the public is clueless. They thought that science was on their side. Pleas for not reducing wolf population down to 150 were ignorant (chairman McDermott: “The public is full of misinformation. They need to understand a need for balance between wolves and ungulates”). Gary Powers said “Idaho is not Yellowstone. We don’t have a problem with over-browsed aspen”. Powers apparently felt that benefits of wolves were limited to vegetation in Yellowstone Park, not Idaho.

Commissioner Randy Budge said the public is polarized and he hoped that the public involvement meeting coming up could get “both sides” together to “get to know each other.” By getting to know the other side, he said, people would be better able to come to consensus on controversial issues. However, he followed by saying that “the commission could never get anything done if the public looked like that group last night.”

It was obvious that those who testified were more diverse than the white, middle-aged hunters who sat on the Fish and Game Commission.

There was no sympathy for the large number who passionately opposed trapping. It was not discussed, and McDermott even remarked that trapping was their most effective tool to control wolves. One of the commissioners did say that trapping was only a two-month season so it should not be a hardship on the public.

The Commission released its new wolf rules for the 2012-13 season.

    Gray Wolf

o Increase bag limit to five each for hunting and trapping in the Panhandle, Palouse-Hells Canyon, Dworshak, Lolo, Selway and Middle Fork wolf zones.

o Extend the season on private land in Panhandle zone.

o Add a trapping season in Units 19A and 25.

o Increase harvest limit in Southern Mountain zone from 25 to 40.

o Increase season length in Beaverhead and Island Park zones to close on January 31.

    • I know Lynne, it’s very sad, I just posted on it. But we don’t need to be sad we need to get mad. I don’t know about you but I’m very tired of writing about dead wolves and I’m sure everyone is sick of reading about the misery and suffering the wolf haters are causing. We need action and organization. I’m still writing a post that I’ve been writing for a week on my vision for the future.
