OUTRAGE! Lennox Killed!

AP: Lennox

A dog was euthanized killed in Ireland because he LOOKED like a Pitt Bull!! I’m broken-hearted for poor Lennox and his owners. He was killed for nothing, he  never bit anyone or did anything wrong.  There was even a Facebook campaign to save him,  with over 112, 000 Likes but in the end nothing could save Lennox from the Irish Court System.  RIP Lennox, sweet Lennox!

Outrage over Lennox: Dog put to sleep for looking like a pit bull in Northern Ireland

Despite a global outcry from animal rights activists, a dog was put to sleep in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Wednesday because city officials said he looked like a pit bull.

The 7-year-old pug-nosed dog, Lennox, was at the center of a two-year legal battle between his owners and the Belfast City Council. The city’s dog wardens seized Lennox in 2010, claiming he was a dangerous “pit bull-type dog,” according to The Associated Press. Pit bulls are illegal in the United Kingdom.

Lennox’s owners argued he was not only not dangerous—he was not even a pit bull. In court, Lennox’s owner Caroline Barnes said the dog had never bitten anyone, but that she would muzzle him around strangers.

The case sparked outrage among animal rights groups, inspiring a “Save Lennox” campaign and an online petition that collected more than 200,000 signatures. Some people—including celebrity dog trainer Victoria Stilwell—offered to adopt the dog in the United States, where pit bulls are legal.

But last month, a senior appeals court in Northern Ireland upheld a lower court ruling that called for Lennox to be put down.

In a statement, the City Council said an expert “described the dog as one of the most unpredictable and dangerous dogs he had come across,” and that it had no choice but to euthanize him.

City Council members said they have received death threats, part of what they called “a sustained campaign of abuse.”

  1. This has been an outrageous and horrific tragedy! The poor owner! She tried everything, and so many people were behind her efforts, to no avail! Talk about stubborn ignorance on the part of the so-called city council in Belfast! They had no proof and no right to do what they did to his poor animal and his family – NONE – but they did it anyway!!!!!!! It’s just heartbreaking and they are MURDERERS!!!!!!

  4. “A campaign of abuse”? Those city officials are the ones carrying out a campaign of abuse. Probably Unionists to boot! What kind of world are we creating? Euthanasia relieves their conscience?

    • I really pray there was not a political component to all of this – how petty can they be. They need to give all that up.

  6. What a tragedy – poor Lennox, I have signed many petitions for him and put his story on my Facebook page. He never hurt a flea, but because he looked like a pit bull he was put to death. Very very sad day for all his family and his advocates around the world.

  7. How troubling is it that a global community of like-minded people could not save one little dog because a governing body simply had to assert it’s power? It’s troubling on so many levels, not the least of which is ignoring the wishes of the governed. Of course, here in North America, we should be used to this by now.
My own political disappointment aside, for Lennox and his family… there are no words adequate enough except perhaps that this one lone dog touched so many people across the face of this Earth – a noble legacy most humans can’t aspire to.

    • The wishes of the governed don’t count for much anymore and won’t as long as money is bankrolling elections. We need a lot of people to get together and vote people out of office or not vote them in based on their previous records (such as their stand on wolf hunting or support of puppy mills). Maybe that would send a message that money couldn’t overcome.

  8. More mean-spirited idiots like the wolf killers. Can’t depend on the IRA anymore:) The Belfast City Council and the hunters are all great examples of why more birth control and less Viagra should be available.

I signed as many petitions for Lennox as I came across. Unfortunately, they did as much good as all the letters and calls to legislators for the wolves. Let’s all keep trying anyway. They would like us all to give up and shut up.

  9. Lisa, I love your comment and every word is true. Even with so many stepping forward to help Lennox they still felt the need to kill him. They had the power to do it and they were determined to kill the dog no mater who offered to help save his life. A true refection of how a little power given to a few can have far reaching consequences and how the voice of others have no meaning. Shame on Ireland for killing this innocent animal. Bert C,. 12. I feel Lennox died while incarcerated in inhumane conditions of a broken heart and neglect before today. If you see some of the photographs there are patches of missing hair and he looked so old and sad .We tried so hard to save Lennox, Oreo and Lucy before him. Injustices such as these will keep occurring while the law states that nonhuman animals are property-whether it is a dog or our beloved wolves, or cows, etc. As it stands,a human murderer gets more justice than an innocent being.
Not even 150 years ago my ancestors were considered property, as slaves they were listed as “livestock.” We can begin to make a change no matter how infinitesimal we feel it is by supporting the Guardian Campaign.

We could not save Lennox but we are now launching a campaign to boycott Irish products:

  14. As someone else informed me today Northern Ireland is not ‘Ireland’ but a part of the UK. That is why some tried to appeal to the Queen for a Stay of Mercy, for all the good that did Lennox and his family. This is a shameful day for Belfast and Northern Ireland, the City Council should all be fired on the spot then sued till they are out on the street. What happened is unfair and very sad. So many people tried to help and now at least if you can say there is one window opened it is that people are realizing how devastating it is to single out one breed and assume that all dogs from that breed are killers. So ironic because as some close to the family have said Lennox was not a pit bull after all, according to DNA testing.

  16. I am so saddened by this – especially since there were humane alternatives. This poor dog never did anything, and what’s almost worse is that I don’t think he was treated well while in “custody” either. It makes me sick to my stomach, and heart, that people can be so cruel. 😦

  18. Sick! Just sick over this! How can they be so incompetant and cruel to that family including a childs plea to have her dog back which was bought for her for therapeutic reasons? Just discusting to say the least. After 2 years they could not test this dog for themselves to see their Vet was correct all along? Bunch of Belfast village idiots. So sorry to the family. RIP Lennox, a angel taken too soon. You know sit with the Lord and one day they will see you again. Sorry little guy for the hell you lived and was put through by evil human being with no hearts and denied the right to see your family for the last time to ensure you they loved you very very much and their hands were tired due to cruel ignorant people who housed animals for euthanasia.

  21. We cant sink to their level, no matter how much anger we have we have to think rationally to try and find the most responsible course of action. We cant do something that might make the any of the worlds government’s try and do something rash. The more we corner then and force them to do what we, the people, want for them to do the more that they’ll be forced into actually doing it. We have the power, not them. This country is ruled by the people in God’s name and, sadly, we don’t rule it that way. Lennox is just one example of that. May you rest in peace Lennox and may the people who have done this to you be punished and haunted for this atrocity.
