Pro-wolf groups stir up ranks to protest killing of Wedge Pack

 Sept. 26, 2012 12:03 p.m.

Spokesman – Review

ENDANGERED SPECIES — Pro-wolf groups aren’t all standing by as Washington Fish and Wildlife staffers try to eliminate the cattle-preying Wedge Pack in northern Stevens County. Here’s a form letter being promoted by the Center for Biological Diversity:

Dear John,

The killing will be carried out on the public’s dime using marksmen on the ground. If that doesn’t work, these wolves will be shot from helicopters.Only seven wolf packs live in Washington state — but the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has ordered the entire Wedge pack killed in response to cattle depredations. That includes at least eight wolves.

Washington’s wolf management plan clearly states that, to avoid cattle losses, non-lethal measures must be taken first to protect livestock. In this case only minimal actions were taken to avoid wolf-livestock conflicts. The state should not reward irresponsible ranchers by killing wolves that are only acting as wolves do.

Please call Gov. Christine Gregoire now at (360) 902-4111 and tell her you do not support killing the Wedge pack when ranchers have not done their part to protect cattle.

Then let us know you got through to the governor’s office by clicking here. A sample call has been provided below:

“Hello, my name is ________________ and I live in ________________, Washington. I’m calling to ask Governor Gregoire to stop the killing of the Wedge pack by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. I’d also like to state my opposition to state-run wolf killing, particularly in cases where ranchers have not done everything they can to avoid losing livestock. Can you please tell me the governor’s position on this issue?

[Wait for explanation]

“Thanks, that’s good to know. I still don’t believe the circumstances justify killing the Wedge pack. These animals are endangered, and killing them should always be viewed as a great loss. The kill order should be permanently revoked.”

[Offer the staffer your address or zip code, and thank them for their time.]

    • vidapreciosa,

I wish I could explain this situation to you in one sentence but unfortunately it would take a book of a thousand pages. The short version is state game agencies can pretty much do whatever they want. Montana and Idaho both have wolf hunts going on as I type this. The US Senate passed a wolf delisting rider with a must pass budget bill in the Spring of 2011 giving Montana and Idaho the right to hold wolf hunts without judicial review. It was challenged in the court of appeals and we lost. It sounds easy to say stop all the wolf hunting but once Obama opened the door by delisting grays wolves TWICE in the Northern Rockies, he moved on to delisting them in the Great Lakes as well. I agree that the wolf movement has not done half of what is could do. There should be protests with thousands of people in the streets but all we can seem to muster is small crowds, the largest demonstration so far was approx. eighty people. But make no mistake we are working our tails off to change this dynamic but we are up against millions of dollars from the wolf haters. There are the myriad of Cattleman’s Assocs, the hunting groups, the Safari Club, the NRA, etc. We are David and they are Goliath but we are working very hard to see wolves are relisted.

Dear One we only need a couple of months to end this horrible nightmare. I learnt from sources related to WordPress.com that Obama is under lethal pressure as the cabal still have some power left. He and his family were nearly murdered. He has been forced to implement all the revolting laws against humans and animals. I assumed your group were a few hundreds at least. Anyway if it is their karma then nobody can save the wolves but some will be left alive for sure. I know you are doing your very best Nabeki and I bow to you in empathy and respect. Anyone who respectsI all life is commendable. I will pray to the ET’s to save the wolves if possible. I am also aware that death is only a passage way into another level of consciousness. The body is lifeless but the soul lives forever and we shall meet all the killed wolves in the 4th dimension where, we the planet earth and all its creations are heading! Namaste dear friend

No way No how – I would tell them if they ever run across my path – well look over their shoulders I might be right behind them –
This is inexcusable – I lived in Washington State – it is beautiful – but I guess if you are not born there you might as well stay home – I never fitted in – and I guess a few Wolves won’t either – all 6 or 7 are such a big danger – better go out and kill BEFORE they do any damage – brave wonderful People – How do they sleep at night???

    • I am afraid I would choke trying not to sound full of hate and anger – we have been nice we have been polite and we sit and let it go and take it all – more and more are killed and one day they will be gone – all of them – it’s time to take stronger measures – I don’t think anyone hears us – no petition has helped – and I guess they hate the Wolves as much as I hate them – People without a Soul –

KIlling innocent aniamls – I want to propose they hunt each other up there to diminish the overpopulation because 6 or 7 Wolves would not even be notices but the eruption of people is like a huge bomb fell and all these people came out. I mean they sent the USS Nimitz up there with over 5000 people and then the wives and all the Kiddies came – and it sure was hard to find a place to live –

People without Souls should not be allowed to live.

  3. As I’ve said before, the wolf needs to be put back on the Endangered Species list, the list where Obama illegally removed him from for blood money….and if I know one person that votes Obama back into office for a second term……I’ll feed you to the GD fish! The wolf IS as in IS endangered and anyone who harms him in any way should find themselves at the short end of the stick of the law. But problem number one: The law is breaking the law by letting this blood bath go on. They are no better than the slobs that are slaughtering God’s dog.

      • Dear Vida;
        “Independent Record

With wolves expected to be delisted within 60 days, after President Barack Obama on Friday signed the budget bill passed this week by Congress, those involved in the highly charged debate about the future of wolves are examining the fallout.

Both sides in a 2-year-old lawsuit over whether wolves should be removed from the list of endangered species in Montana and Idaho said the rider in the budget bill effectively ends their litigation. The rider specifically excludes the congressional delisting action from judicial review, which scuttled delisting in 2009 and 2010.

“Any litigation, I think, would be null and void,” said Suzanne Stone, the Northern Rockies representative for the Defenders of Wildlife. “Where do we go from here? That’s a good question. The state has been asking for the right to manage the wolf population for a long time, so we’ll be watching what they do and offer them aid.”

Under the legislation, the Department of Interior will reissue its wolf delisting rule first published in April 2009, which took wolves off the endangered species list in Montana, Idaho and portions of Washington, Oregon and Utah, but kept them on it in Wyoming. The federal government isn’t expected to take public comment on the matter, returning wolf management over to the two states with federally approved plans.

As part of the plan, Montana must maintain a minimum of 150 wolves and 15 breeding pairs. Currently, at least 560 wolves roam Montana in 108 packs. At least 1,650 wolves live in the region.

Idaho’s plan, adopted in 2008, would ensure that wolf populations are maintained at 2005 levels of 518 wolves or more during the five-year post delisting period. At last count, Idaho was home to 705 wolves.

Joe Maurier, director of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, said they are preparing a hunting season proposal for the FWP Commission to consider. Montana held its first regulated hunting season in 2009, harvesting 72 wolves between Sept. 15 and Nov. 16. A quota of 186 wolves was proposed for the 2010 hunt, but that was shut down by a federal court order.

State officials said they expect the 2011 season to be similar to the proposed 2010 harvest levels, which would reduce the wolf population by about 13 percent. Wolf hunting licenses currently are set at $19 for residents and $350 for nonresidents.

“Wildlife management is about seeking a balance, in this case a balance between wolves, other wildlife, livestock producers and other

interests,” Maurier said. “Montana played a pivotal role in the recovery of the Rocky Mountain gray wolf and the expectation is that Montana will play an important role in its future. FWP is prepared and ready to meet that challenge.

“We are committed to the responsible conservation and management of the wolf to ensure that the population remains vital and recovered in Montana.”

With delisting, Montana wolves will be classified under state law as a “species in need of management” and will be treated like other managed wildlife. Similar to lions and black bears, a wolf seen actively biting, wounding, chasing, harassing or attacking livestock or domestic dogs can be killed. Such incidents must be reported to FWP within 72 hours.

Livestock producers also can haze or harass a wolf that’s too close to livestock or domestic animals on public or private lands; that also must be reported within 72 hours.

Both Montana and Idaho must monitor the wolf population and submit population status reports to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service annually for the next five years. The federal agency also will monitor how the two states carry out their management plans, regulations and state laws.

Environmental groups also will be monitoring the states’ activities. The Greater Yellowstone Coalition noted Friday that a new chapter of wolf management has begun, and they pledged to work with state wildlife agencies and others to ensure that wolves are managed like other wildlife, “based on sound science and public involvement.”

“Americans care deeply about Greater Yellowstone’s wildlife, including wolves. If the states don’t get it right, we will blow the whistle,” the group said in a press release. “While we are disappointed in the way delisting has been achieved, the goal of the ESA is to restore native wildlife from the brink of extinction. We have achieved this success with wolves in Greater Yellowstone. Now, our challenge is to ensure we do not go backward.””

Unfortunately, the ‘Management Plan” has been left up to a bunch of blood thirsty, money hungry idiots. This bill should NEVER have been signed…..with the rider conveniently attached to the back delisiting the wolf.

Some cases are so outrageous that no matter how much one wishes to remain single minded, without even wishing it one falls for the duality involved. I noticed you didn’t cover Washington Wedge Pack. Why the total elimination of the pack and how can animal protection associations do nothing about it? What about the predation alleged was it confirmed or not? Either way they got paid for the cows so why the discrimination?
Obviously USA has been really screwed completely by the Illuminati cabal more than I imagined. I truly empathize with you the good people and I sincerely am happy I don’t live there. We really must encourage all of the big animal welfare/rights groups to join together. A few have been highly criticized of late because they “don’t run a shelter”…or they “have too much money – why aren’t they helping the animals”. I’ve always thought those criticisms were short-sighted because it is these groups that can and do involve themselves in a wide variety of litigation. This is where they excel.
This wolf kill is a travesty….to kiss the rear ends of a few ranchers. Keep in mind, however, there are a few that belong to an organization called predator friendly ranching. You can google them.

      • vidapreciosa, the only “proof” I’ve heard of so far is showing the calves/cows/livestock allegedly killed by wolves to the Fish and Wildlife agencies. They determine if the kill was made by a wolf or other animals. There are telltale injuries supposedly. There are times they cannot tell which animal did the killing or injury. It is not unusual for farmers/ranchers to cry “wolf” when the wildlife agency finds it is not so.
Ranchers should be made to be responsible for the safety of their animals. They pay a tiny amount to use federal/public lands for grazing their livestock, often near National forests. If it’s decided their animal(s) was killed by a wolf, they are given “depredation compensation” for the animals’ full value by the government. The rancher in Washington who called for the deaths of the Wedge Pack wolves REFUSED his compensation, only wanting the wolves all gone. So the agencies are catering to these people. This is part of the reason why many people are furious over this.
Since everyone has a cell/phone camera these days, I offer the suggestion that any rancher or farmer who claims wolf depredation should be held responsible for taking a photo of the wolf in the act. It would only take a second. It should be demanded of them or they should…quite frankly….just shut the hell up.

  6. Just the thought of killing a wolf makes me ill. But to shoot like it’s a game of fun, just makes my blood boil. How can anyone just kill a creature/ Specially a wolf. They help cull deer, elk, other animals. But to go up and shoot them from a helicopter, how disgusting.
I think we should do the same to humans. Since we seem to have the mentality of KILL. That’s all most people want to do to animals that cause no harm. Like the Ranches in Texas….lions, tigers, zebra, you name it….all for the “SPORT” of killing something that they will never use, other than the trophy!
I belive in hunting to eat. THAT is as far as it goes.
Why not irridicate all animals, and then what would us “HUMANS” do?
We are killing our planet, and no one seems to care for the fact. Saying that Global Warming is a bunch of crap…..really???? Who made these people GODS????? I sure as hell didn’t…………

I cannot even fathom how I still have any tears left. Since I was offered a month ago a beautiful female calico cat my mental agony has subsided. The cat belonged to my son’s boss’s daughter who had the cat for a year but the father decided to buy 2 puppies that are going to grow as big as almost a donkey’s size and the cat was being very hostile to the puppies so to avoid a tragedy they gave me the cat and that was a blessing sent to me by the Universal Energy Creator Power. Whenever I burst into tears she comes running to me, miowing and miowing as if telling me to relax and let go. Then she sits by me and stays with me and I stop crying and pat her and play with her and my mental misery goes away.
If you don’t have a pet I suggest you get one. Their vibrations of unconditional love have powerful healing properties. 8. I have become so disillusioned with trappers/snares in general and the wolf kills in particular. It seems like no matter how much the public wants traps/snares made illegal and wolves to be left alone. Our voices are ignored. to me, traps/snares are horrific devices best left to history yet, the money provided by the tags speaks more emphatically to our ‘oh so wise’ government officials. I have absolutely no problem with hunters who kill, eat and use the WHOLE animal. I do mean those hunters who use stealth, studying their prey movements, and respectfully give thanks once their target is ‘harvested’. but, killing predators of any kind – just because they do what is natural! – is not TRADITION but it is cruelty. yes, we (most of us anyway) like our beef, lamb, leather etc brought about by livestock ranchers. There has got be some kind of balance! get the cattle off PUBLIC lands! Make non-lethal methods of predation control a legal mandate! ranchers seem to get the most out of this skewed world we live in. they get paid for proven predator kills. stop the double dipping – stop the killing.
