The Humane Society of the United States and The Fund for Animals have announced they intend to sue the USFWS over the delisting of gray wolves in the Great Lakes region, with the goal of seeing Endangered Species Protections restored for the beleaguered animals. This was very welcome news as the Wisconsin wolf hunt opened Monday.
Wolves in the Northern Rockies and now the Great Lakes Region have been handed over to brutal state management. They are suffering the tortures of the damned as they are trapped, shot, hunted with bow, snared and in Wyoming treated like vermin in over 80% of the state, where they can be killed by any means, 365 days of the year. Wisconsin wants to chase them to their deaths with up to six dogs per hunter. A legal challenge stopped that horror for now but a hearing is scheduled in December to re-visit the issue.
Wolves cannot survive this holocaust. The feds, along with ranching interests, teamed up to wipe them out in the 1900’s. If the killing isn’t stopped we will lose them once again. Wolves must be re-listed, not only in the Great Lakes but the Northern Rockies as well!!

The Humane Society of the United States Files Notice of Suit to Restore Federal Protection for Great Lakes Wolves
On the day of the first public wolf hunting and trapping season in the Great Lakes region in more than 40 years, The Humane Society of the United States and The Fund for Animals served notice that they will file suit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to restore federal protections for Great Lakes wolves under the Endangered Species Act. The groups are also asking the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota to postpone wolf hunting and trapping until the case can be decided on the merits.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s most recent decision to delist wolves became effective earlier this year, after multiple previous attempts to delist wolves were struck down by the courts over the course of the last decade.
“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service put faith in the state wildlife agencies to responsibly manage wolf populations, but their overzealous and extreme plans to allow for trophy hunting and recreational trapping immediately after de-listing demonstrate that such confidence was unwarranted,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO for The HSUS. “Between Minnesota’s broken promise to wait five years before hunting wolves, and Wisconsin’s reckless plan to trap and shoot hundreds of wolves in the first year, it is painfully clear that federal protection must be reasserted. The states have allowed the most extreme voices to grab hold of wolf management, and the result could be devastating for this species.”

The HSUS to Sue to Reverse De-Listing of Wolves in Great Lakes

Yesterday, on the same day that The HSUS and The Fund for Animals announced their intention to sue the federal government to reverse its decision to prematurely remove wolves from the list of protected species, trophy hunters killed at least four wolves on the opening day of the first wolf season in Wisconsin in decades. Minnesota’s hunting and trapping season is set to launch on Nov. 3. Wisconsin awarded 1,160 permits through a lottery, and Minnesota awarded 6,000 permits. Both states issued more hunting permits than there are wolves within their boundaries
If there was any doubt about the intentions of the hunters involved, an Associated Press story written by Steve Karnowski and Todd Richmond made them plain. The reporters talked to hunters about why they bought wolf hunting permits.

Lawsuit takes aim to stop wolf hunt in Wisconsin
Groups want protection back
On the opening day of the Wisconsin wolf hunting and trapping season, the Humane Society of the United States and The Fund for Animals served notice they will file a lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to restore federal protections for Great Lakes wolves under the Endangered Species Act.
The groups also ask officials in Wisconsin and Minnesota, where a wolf season is scheduled to begin in November, to postpone wolf hunting and trapping until the case can be decided. The Wisconsin DNR said Monday it would not halt the season.
“We will continue to implement the season that is directed by Wisconsin law,” said Kurt Thiede, administrator of the DNR’s Land Division.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service delisted wolves in the western Great Lakes region in January and returned management of the species to the states. The Wisconsin legislature in April authorized the state’s first regulated wolf hunting and trapping season.
“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service put faith in the state wildlife agencies to responsibly manage wolf populations, but their overzealous and extreme plans to allow for trophy hunting and recreational trapping immediately after delisting demonstrate that such confidence was unwarranted,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive officer for the HSUS, in a statement released Monday.

I think it’s a great thing that the HSUS is getting involved. It is a huge organization that reaches a lot of people. I was on a conference call one night, and I believe Wayne Pacelle said there were 30,000 of us on that call. During the question session, someone raised the problem of wolf hunting, and so there is interest out there. It would be helpful to get people outside of Idaho, Montana, etc., interested and acting on behalf of the wolves. That way the numbers of complaints and calls will go up.

There’s interest and action in Minnesota. We have one of the largest wolf populations, and are maybe also split in opinion to one of the largest degrees. There’s a plan to maintain a good-sized population, but there are differences of opinion on how to do that. The need to control problem wolves is largely accepted, but the recreational hunting and trapping seasons are controversial.

I hope that the lawsuit to relist the Great Lakes wolf is a success!
Personally, I don’t believe that wolves should be delisted until they inhabit a significant portion of their former range in the Lower 48 States again. Only then will the species be recovered. Only restoring them to the Northern Rockies and Western Great Lakes, but not anywhere else, is not what I would consider to be fully recovered!
Plus, there is so much debate over Great Lakes wolf taxonomy that delisting is premature at this time. Are the Great Lakes wolves Canis lupus, Canis lycaon, or a hybrid of both? Is the Eastern Timber Wolf even a separate species (Canis lycaon), or is it just a subspecies of the gray wolf (Canis lupus lycaon)? What is the conservation status of Canis (lupus) lycaon as a species (or subspecies)? Why delist a species if these questions cannot be answered without confusion?

Carla, from what I read the Eastern Timber Wolf is a separate species and was not delisted. Instead our brilliant DNR lumped all the wolves together then delisted. Wisconsin has two extinct species of wolves.

I think that the issue is still being debated by scientists, but I have also read that some biologists consider the Eastern Timber Wolf (Canis lycaon) to be a separate species that is more closely related to the Red Wolf (Canis rufus) and the Coyote (Canis latrans) than it is to the Gray Wolf (Canis lupus). Due to the genetic evidence, this is my current position in regard to these wolves. However, the USFWS does not currently recognize it as a species, and instead considers it to be a subspecies of the Gray Wolf (Canis lupus lycaon). Thus, when the USFWS delisted the Great Lakes wolf, they delisted all wolves that live in the region, regardless of whether it is a Gray Wolf, a Timber Wolf, or a hybrid of both. So yes, the Timber Wolf was delisted in the Great Lakes.
It is a real shame that the DNR just lumps Canis lycaon with Canis lupus as one species, as the genetic data indicates otherwise. Does anyone else find it weird that Minnesota and Wisconsin (the two states that hunt wolves) only recognize one wolf species – Canis lupus – while Michigan (which does not hunt wolves – yet) recognizes both Canis lupus and Canis lycaon as separate species?

You are right Carla…the Eastern Timber Wolf is not delisted. They are protected….but they failed to mention that they’ve been extinct in the east since 1908. Yup…that Endangered Species is doing a lot of good here. Mind you…I still want it enforced here….just in case.
There was a hybrid that surfaced after many years of evolution. I haven’t heard much about them in the last 10 years, but they are larger than a coyotee, about the size of a small wolf. (Differ in size.) They were spotted in upstate NY several years ago. Haven’t heard anything since.

The USFWS considers the Eastern Timber Wolf to be a subspecies of the Gray Wolf. So when they delisted the Great Lakes wolf, they delisted all wolves classified as being part of the Gray Wolf species, including the Timber Wolf, that live in the Great Lakes region. Eastern Timber Wolves are still protected throughout the rest of their US range, however.
This hybrid sounds interesting…I wonder whether it was a coywolf (coyote/wolf hybrid) or a Gray/Eastern Timber Wolf hybrid (I like to call these hybrids “Western Timber Wolves”).
That would be cool if it was the “Western Timber Wolf” that was spotted in NY; perhaps this indicates that it’s the start of the wolf’s return to the Northeast…
Regardless of what they are I would like to hear more about these hybrids as well.

About time – I sent an e-mail to HSUS earlier today when I heard the news suggesting if they do not already monitor your site – they should! I suggested they send out the very graphic pictures to their members and see if that doesn’t get some results. Who (other than those sadistic hunters) can look @ one of these beautiful animals caught in a leg-trap or snare or thrown in back of truck OR particularly disgusting lying on the ground – dead – w/ the fat, white hunter holding his head up and grinning w/ gun slung over the body. What I wouldn’t give to get a hunting tag for these guys! In particular the use of those medival cross-bows (that look like they could take out a tank) are outrageous.GO TO IT HSUS

Good for you Cathryn, I’m of French Canadian heritage and will persue my tribal ancestry this winter. The Ojibwe in Wisconsin consider wolves their brothers and I don’t know why they can’t sue the state. Something is holding them back. I read the Ojibwe News. 4 wolves were killed Monday. I agree with you Pat, HSUS needs to mail it’s members a very painfully sad picture.

We are a killing culture, I am saddened of the news of the most recent murders, I know Canada has its own statutes, I know that the tribes have so much power, now that they have all the casinos, they should start all funds for the protection of our wolves. Our wolf spirits need us, more now then ever. I am making several calls today, to senators, Governors and my representitive, here in California.. Its our only hope to find wildlife advocates in the Government and attorneys, who a thirsty to take on this mogul giants, just so their livestock can be fattened up and slaughtered! I sign as much as I can, but what I do is call all the information on this site, and call your representitive and especially the humane society of the United States, and start writing letters, there are fewer wolves in the wilderness than other animals. Really.. Worrying about wipe the wolves out of America including Alaska.. When the dislist come back and more states wants wolf hunt after one state then next… Next … NEXT… Really scary! Few wolves than rest of the deers, sheep, elks and cattle… They have no clue any things with killing them. That’s the crime! LET HOPE THEY GET WORK WITH THEM TO STOP WOLF HUNT!

Yes, it seems that hunters/ranchers are rationalizing regarding killing wolves, trying to convince themselves that the wolves are being discriminatory in their choice of food and specifically targeting cattle. I wish they all were compelled to take appropriate precautions agains any type of depredation toward their livestock. What other business can blow off security and then expect others to pay for their (alleged) damaged goods? Frustrating. I wish the HSUS would have filed the lawsuit sooner, but perhaps their timing will focus even more attention on the wolf kill now that it has begun.

Turning “management” of wolves over to any state at this time does not work. We have witnessed that no state wildlife agency is ready to do anything except persecute and slaughter wolves. Wolves and other natural predators do not need to be managed by people. Nature does an excellent job of regulating natural predator populations. People – welfare ranchers who force the public to fund their awful animal husbandry, crminial sport killers, mentally disturbed trappers and other animal abusers – are the ones that need to be managed. Wolves will need to be federally protected for a long time, perhaps forever. The US needs a national predator protection act that outlaws the hunting of all natural predators, as they are all vital for every ecosystem they inhabit. Wolves, grizzlies, cougars, coyotes, wolverines, lynx, etc need permanent protection, not “management.”

It’s still so shocking to me that in our present day this wolf slaughter is still going on, against the wishes of most people should the truth be known. In poll after poll, comment period after comment period, the majority oppose wolf slaughter as primitive and barbaric, even those who support general hunting, and yet state and federal wildlife “agencies” continue to ignore the will of the people and cater to the wishes of a small minority.
You bet we should sue, it is the only remedy to protect these animals, as well as continuing to howl loudly to our so-called legislators.

Gina, the only advantage to looking at these disgusting sites is to SEE IF THEY ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT ANY PARTICULAR LEGISLATION, POLITICIANS…OR…ANY SPECIFIC THREATS TO THEIR “SPORT”. THAT is the information we truly need, and, lol, they actually make it easier for us to fight.
