Officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service say the Fox Mountain pack — including the two pups — was spotted feeding on an elk carcass late last week.

But this episode is far from over. The pup’s mother was wrongly removed from the wild and placed in captivity.
“One of only 60 wild species of her kind, the Fox Mountain Mexican wolf, wanted for allegedly killing several cows in New Mexico has been trapped and removed from the wild by Federal wildlife managers. WildEarth Guardians requested public records in conjunction with her removal, and received 682 blacked out pages, of the 870 pages received. We maintain this is public information and the federal government must account for the capture and incarceration of the Fox Mountain Loba. We will appeal Wildlife Services’ redacted response and are calling for a Congressional investigation into the agency’s behavior.”
Meanwhile the Fox Mountain alpha female remains separated from her family.

I hope for the same things. But so sad that it will be too late for the hundreds of wolves who have already suffered and died. Not only are many people selfish, but they are incredibly arrogant in their belief of being suprior to all other creatures. Too bad this belief is supported by hundreds of years of religious and cultural ideology.

The howl of the wolf is one of the most beautiful sounds on earth. My heart sings every time I hear them! I have signed every petition I could find to help stop the massacre of these amazing animals and I lift them up in prayer daily. I do not understand this need some humans have to ruthlessly torture and kill another being but I pray for compassion to find its way into their hearts. My heart is breaking for these magnificent wolves!

Just read The Wolf, the Woman the Wilderness by Teresa Tsummu Martino. What a wonderful, sad, happy, full of wildness book. It will help us all to learn how beautiful, true and loving the wolf is. It will also help you get in touch with your wildness. It is a comforting feeling and a very real feeling at the same time. This woman is a fantastic wildlife rehabilitator and takes you inside of the wolf, inside of her wolf. You are all wolf people and should be proud. Like Nabeki says,

No christmas presents this year. Only horrific dreams and interminable mourning. I guess this is what the native peoples of this land felt like a hundred years ago. You bet if they didn’t have wildlife to slaughter, they would be slaughtering the innocent and the weak of their own kind. There is something very wrong in homosapiens brain. Thank you,, Nabeki. Some of us are not like that. They could have taught us soooooo much, both the natives and the wolves!

WHAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND IS WHY THE HELL WOULD SOMEONE TAKE A MOTHER WOLF FROM HER PUPS JUST TO PUT HER IN CAPTIVITY – IT DOESN’T MAKE ANYMORE SENSE THAN IT DOES TO KILL HUNDREDS OF WOLVES JUST BECAUSE THE GREEDY RANCHERS AND STUPID PEOPLE CAN’T CONTROL THEIR CATTLE AND DON’T WANT TO CHANGE SOME OF THE WAYS THEY KEEP THERE CATTLE OR SHEEP OR WHAT EVER THEY HAVE. THE LORD ABOVE IS MOST LIKELY IN SUCH PAIN RIGHT NOW KNOWING THAT HUMANS ARE DESTROYING EVERYTHING WE STAND FOR. NOT JUST WITH WOLVES BUT WITH OTHER ANIMALS AND THE ENVIRONMENT AS WELL.

My heart smiles as I listen to this pup howling to his/her packmates and they, in kind, return the howls. Then I think of the 2 Fox Mountain pups – howling into silence as they seek the re-assurance that their pack members are nearby, and my heart weeps. May they, at least, find some small comfort in each other’s company.

When I read this article I so wished I make all this suffering against wolf-people go away, among others. Such dark and treacherous times in the US require deep strength. Where is our Neo? We must each believe we can do it. (together!)
Trade agreements and animal preservation

These bode certain destruction and suffering for wildhorses (MX and CA slaughterhouses), fur-bearing animals (esp wolves, harp seals, anything with fur via the American Fur Exchange and EU fur trade), energy (open door for tar sands,gas and oil fracking/pipelines/open pit mining), the oceans(dolphins, whales, every creature). As if that is not enough of a free grab for globalists: TPP has a clause that allows the global corporation to sue the US for damages, if US ‘laws’ get in the way of the visiting global exploiter making profits by any means. Now you know why those heads of state are all smiling in their nice suits.

Online petitions/rallies (international!) are needed. I continue to believe part of the bait and switch of the de-listing was to remove any endangered species for the energy companies to start their destruction.
The president has repeatedly stated he is opening up all US federal lands.
In closing, miracles please protect those pups. It is too hurtful to write about.

10 wolves from Yellowstone National Park have been shot and killed just outside the park boundaries in the last month. Seven were radio collared and 2 had GPS collars. These were iconic, popular wolves that were in park research studies which had been going on since the reintroduction in 1995. Please call the governors of Montana and Wyoming to have all hunting units bordering Yellowstone immediately closed. Remind them that visitors to Yellowstone spend $35 million annually to watch wild wolves.

Judy, This is such an outrage. I know they are luring the wolves out of the park with distress calls, howling, etc. These people are bottom feeders, no empathy, no care, just blood lust. What kind of person kills an animal for fun?
And where are all the Yellowstone wolf advocates? Where is the outcry? Where is Yellowstone National Park on this? During the first Montana wolf hunt, in 2009, the famed Yellowstone Cottonwood Pack alpha female, alpha male and their daughter were wiped out by hunters. Montana stopped the hunt over it. Now? Crickets? The entire situation has descended into depravity. We have to find other ways to reach people over this slaughter.

Nabeki, I got an emergency alert from Defenders of Wildlife about this last week. They have a petition to the governors. I got more details from an email from National Wolfwatchers. Yellowstone wolf biologist Doug Smith said the killed wolves were ones that never left the park and it seemed to him that collared wolves were deliberately targeted.

What does everyone think of the possibility of WA State Gov. Gregoire replacing Ken Salazar? More of the same anti-wolf agenda? She did not intercede on behalf of the Wedge Pack, in favor of the ranchers. Why can’t the Interior Dept. ever have anybody decent? It is very frustrating. There’s more to the Interior than just the West and their interests.

Good to hear that the Mexican Wolf pups rejoined their pack; now hopefully they will stay with their pack (and the pack is not dispersed), especially during this critical time when they are learning how to hunt. I’ll admit, I’m glad that the USFWS took the alpha female into captivity instead of killing her (remember, that’s what they originally planned on doing to her). However, at the same time, I really wish that they allowed her to stay in the wild, and resorted to other non-lethal methods of dealing with depredation. I hope that she is one day reunited with her pack, but if she isn’t, then at least the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center will take good care of her. Tis a huge shame those pups have to grow up without their mother, though.

Sonoran-Loba…yes it was better that she wasn’t killed but she should never have been targeted in the first place. These wolves are surrounded by cattle in the Blue Ranch Wolf Recovery Area…which is 3/4 crowded with cattle. Most ranchers practice the “Columbus Method” of cattle ranching, let them loose in the Spring and discover them in the fall. Cattle carcasses are not removed and left to rot, so wolves will feed on these cows and may be blamed for killing them or become habituated to eating a cow. WidlEarth Guardians is trying to buy up the public grazing leases in the wolf recovery area and get these friggin cows out of the Mexican gray wolves home. The USFWS has failed miserably to recover these animals, they’ve been poached, killed by USFWS, and hounded since their reintroduction. The entire program is a mess and needs a complete rehaul.

Like I said, I also would of preferred that she wasn’t captured and that this depredation issue was resolved by other (non-lethal) means.
Those ranchers seriously need to protect their livestock better. Ranchers in other nations do; I guess ours have just gotten so lazy and reliant on the government for predator control that they’ve forgotten how to deal with depredation themselves. I believe that compensation should only be given to ranchers that have attempted to use non-lethal methods of preventing depredation; that should provide an incentive to invest on and try these non-lethal methods. Plus, if all ranchers are compensated then they probably will never change their ways and the killing will continue.
Yes, the Mexican Wolf Recovery Plan definitely needs an updating, as the current plan is not working! There should be more wolf reintroductions, both within the current recovery area and in other regions, such as Big Bend National Park in Texas and the Grand Canyon. In addition to that, these critically endangered wolves should not be classified as “experimental, nonessential;” they should be classified as “endangered” or at least “experimental, essential,” and they should be listed separately from the rest of the Canis lupus species.
Also, we should stop calling these wolves “Mexican Gray Wolves,” and instead should just call them “Mexican Wolves.” Yes, they are members of the species Canis lupus, but they are the most genetically distinguished subspecies of Canis lupus in North America. I feel that using the term “gray wolf” makes it so that these wolves are just considered a southwestern population of the same gray wolves that inhabits the Rocky Mountains, the Great Lakes, Canada, Alaska, and, historically, the US west of the Mississippi River, when this is not the case. Since Canis lupus nubilus and Canis lupus occidentalis (the 2 subspecies usually associated with the name “gray wolf”), are not endangered range-wide (locally is a completely different story here), associating Canis lupus baileyi with them might give someone the impression that only the population and not the subspecies is endangered, when that is also not the case. I believe that using the name “Mexican Wolf” without the term “gray wolf” in it better indicates this wolf’s uniqueness and that it truly is endangered globally. That’s just my personal opinion, of course, but I just had to through that out there.
