Fantasies of killing become increasingly bizarre

Lynne Stone, longtime wolf advocate and executive director of Northern Idaho’s Boulder White Cloud Council in Ketchum, couldn’t help but laugh. For the last two years she has routinely petitioned the Idaho Dept of Fish and Game for every single “ Big Game Mortality Report” filed on wolves killed by hunters —several hundred of them since the animals lost Endangered Species Act protect. Hunters and trappers are required to send in the report along with the skull and pelt for examination. In mid-January Stone ran across a November 2012 report that stated, “DNA came back as a domestic dog,” a light-skinned one.

“Buy a wolf tag, shoot a dog, claim it was a wolf, get bragging rights and a dog-skin rug,” she chuckled “Life is wonderful in 3rd world Idaho. Is anyone missing a light-colored mutt? Maybe it’s time folks put orange vests and hats on their dogs.”

Gallows humor is all wolf supporters have left. In February 2011, Congress removed gray wolves in the northern Rockies from protection by the Endangered Species Act, the first time a species has ever been delisted for political reasons. Before that, the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s reintroduction of wolves to the northern Rockies in the mid-1990s appeared to be one of the greatest conservation successes in decades. Wolves had been killed off in the West in the late nineteenth and early centuries. But while tourists from all over the country came to Yellowstone in hopes of seeing “Cinderella” or “Limpy” — many of the wolves became named — in the Rockies a reactionary political movement developed against the animals.

  3. I don’t get something this goes on every year to me not much progress to end it. How many more wolves are there can’t be many. So why don’t these slaughtering trapping idiots go out and kill all of them and get it done instead of putting everyone through this trauma for the ones that do care. Then they have one big trophy and they can shove it. Everyone looks for donations to go to court which is not working all it does is buy time. The government does not care. If I had the money would an end to it all

    • I agree with your feelings but killing off all the wolves would just give another name to ever growing extinction list. Plus nature would go through hell trying to fix the damage done by eliminating one of its predators.

  4. I sent info. to Sam Champion, GMA to do a piece on the slaughter of the wolves. WE NEED MEDIA ATTENTION OR IT WILL CONTINUE.

Although Bill Gobson’s article is about the war on wolves in the Rockies, the mindset being described could easily be Northern Wisconsin.

  6. The continued slaughter of wolves in the western states must be stopped. It is completely out of hand and will not stop unless hunters are put on notice they will be prosecuted for animal cruelty. It needs to be done 2 months ago.

    • I agree. We have been doing all we can but it isn’t making a great enough effect on the hunters or the government. Something definitely has to be done.

  10. Take a look at this wolf hunting page on facebook. In the group statement they express their hatred for wolves and their plans to make them extinct. This page also tells wolf lovers to commit suicide. Yet these are the people our government puts on a pedestal over us.

I have been kind of busy lately & I have not been able to see how beautifully this page has been developing. It is about time the wolf numbers have been dropping. They are nothing but a parasite on the world & should be weeded out as such. I’f you’d hate to live in a world without wolves, I suggest taking yourself out.

“I hope you find karma to be profound in your life; may you limp along with a trap on each foot; a snare around your throat and your bowels trailing behind you… or better yet, may a large pack of wolves hunt you down and have sport with your body yipping with glee as you suffer until your lousy soul is released to hell.”

      Ha!

At the start of the wolf hunting season we held hands and said a prayer for the wolves that they would be smart and swift against the men who what to kill them only for there pets. Tonight I told him the fight might only bw won by educating his generation. He hugged the book written by Jim brandenburg. Most of my hopes now with a six year old and a prayer.

WHERE I ask, does the need to kill innocent animals come from?
Dare I ask WHY they need to kill?

    • Mark…Please no death threats…it doesn’t help the wolves. I had to edit your comment. I know you’re frustrated, we all are but that is one of the rules of this blog.

What will help the wolves is if people start organizing against this slaughter. We must work to see wolves relisted!! That is their only hope.

  23. There is another way and that is to eliminate the privilege of being able to hunt. The time for hunting of any sort is over. There is no longer the need. Subsistence is one thing but for trophies no more.
