URGENT: Stop The Coyote Killing Contest – Which Also Threatens OR7…

CA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife & F&G Commission: Stop Coyote Killing Contest

UPDATE: January 6, 2013 @ 6pm

The California Fish and Game C0mmission refused to take any action to stop the Coyote Killing Contest that starts Saturday in Modec County.  Animal rights activists spoke out against the sadistic “contest” today in front of the game commission.

The commission gave testimony that OR7 is too far away from the “hunt” and implied he is not in any immediate danger.

Is the California Fish and Game Commission or California Department of Fish and Wildlife aware wolves can travel 25 to 50 miles per day, one wolf is on record traveling 100 miles while being pursued by hunters. The “contest” is several days away, making it very easy for OR7 to travel in that direction. OR7 has also been known to travel and play with coyotes.  Having a bunch of yahoo’s with guns and hounds out in an area, not too far away from OR7,  IS A CONCERN!!! AND aside from that coyotes are very important to the ecosystem.  A reference was made recently concerning the outbreak of Hantavirus in Yosemite National Park. Well who eats rodents, specifically mice, that can carry the deadly  Hantavirus? COYOTES!!

Predators are here for a reason. Mesopredators, like the coyote, help control disease by keeping the rodent population in check. Apex predators, like the wolf, keep ungulate herds healthy and exert a top down effect on ecosystems. Killing coyotes or any animals  for fun is WRONG!  It’s medieval and must be outlawed!

The only good thing to come out of the hearing was Commission president  Mike Sutton “asked staff to clarify the board’s authority to regulate the contests.”…..Tracie Cone, AP

Once again, when we ask officials  to stop the brutal hunting and torturing of animals, in this case killing as many coyotes as possible in three days to win a silver buckle, advocates get the proverbial finger!

Petitioning Director Charlton H. Bonham

CA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife & F&G Commission: Stop Coyote Killing Contest

Project Coyote Logo

Petition By Project Coyote

Please join Project Coyote and partners in calling on the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CADFW) and the California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) to stop a coyote hunting contest planned for early February in Modoc County, California, and to conduct a top-to-bottom evaluation of the state’s approach to managing predators in California.

Specific details about the contest hunt:

What: “Coyote Drive 2013” Coyote Contest Hunt sponsored by the Pit River Rod and Gun Club along with Adin Supply Company
Where: Adin Supply Company, Adin, CA
When: Feb. 8-10, 2013
More info.: http://www.adinsupply.com/coyote%20drive.htm

Killing coyotes or any wild animal as part of a ‘contest’ ‘tournament’ or ‘drive’ is ethically indefensible, ecologically reckless, and contravenes new legislation (AB 2402) that Governor Jerry Brown recently signed into law requiring the Fish & Game Commission to use “ecosystem based management” and the best available science in the stewardship of California’s wildlife.

The contest hunt planned for Adin, CA also poses a significant threat to the recovery of gray wolves in California. This region is where OR-7 (aka “Journey” – the only federally protected gray wolf known to be in California) has been known to range and contest hunts like the one proposed are a threat to his safety and the safety of any other un-collared wolves who may roam the area.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please send the letter below to California Department of Fish and Wildlife Director Charlton H. Bonham and to the members of the California Fish and Game Commission and share this petition far and wide!

Another state following the slaughtering ways of Obama. I don’t blame people for leaving that state. I hope that the animals get the heck out of there too. All these governmental agencies of Fish and Game think that they are gods. They are nothing more than paper pushing morons in most cases, and the ones at the top are the bigger morons who sign these papers that make them feel ‘god-like’. “I have authority. I’m a big shot”. Well, they may have authority, (whether they should or not is another issue) but slaughtering animals….is so wrong. And God help them if they as much as look at OR-7. OR-7 has become the hope of America. OR-7 is very loved by millions.
Killing innocent animals is like somebody comes into your home Bonham and starts slaughtering your family…kids and all. What goes around…comes around. You think your state is in trouble now. Hope you enjoy the boycott!

    • It looks like this is one of the latest ways to get money–have a contest to kill animals. The hunters are getting bolder in their quest for more victims. A community in New York state is having a squirrel killing contest. People can bring their kids and have a fun day killing the little fellows, whom many of them deem “furry-tailed rats.” What a great way to get the kids desensitized to harming animals and make hunters of them in the future! There is an in-your-face attitude about all of this to people who object to the contests and the killing. We need more of us to fight back!

  14. These coyote killing contests are just the most sickening, disgusting, horrid, vile things ever! I HATE them with a passion! Those poor coyotes! They have done nothing to justify this, and do not deserve this cruel treatment and killing whatsoever! Just the thought of people wanting to kill coyotes for fun is repulsive and offensive to my brain!

I fear for Wolf OR-7/Journey’s safety very much. I just hope that he can avoid the hunters and not get tricked by one those predator calls.

WHY do these people continue to do this – they should issue permits to hunt each other that would be more fair and help eliminate these jerks! Once again the writer for the SF Chronicle got an article on major page Sunday paper about this issue.

  18. Dear Nabeki, and Wolf Warriors far and wide,

I think you had it right when you said that all of this predator killing is a way to seek revenge on animal rights activists and ecological conservationists. Something else I’ve been considering is that not many people are truly realizing that this torture of animals is just one step away from mass killing of humans…actually one of the first things that serial killers do in their “careers” as a way of desensitizing their consciences. What does this say about our country…”land of the free and home of the brave”? (More like sociopaths, if you ask me!)

I just finished watching the video posted on the Montana State Legislature website, where the Senate Fish and Game Committee was holding its hearing on HB 73 yesterday. If you can stomach it, this is quite a display of insanity and indecency, masquerading as concerned citizens. Especially pay attention to how very calmly and rationally the bill’s proponent brags of how this bill is the best way to ensure that the wolves will not be relisted; the list of “proponents” of the bill that smugly file up the microphone; and Senator Fred Thomas, in the last few minutes, who is livid because the bill doesn’t include provisions for snaring these “vicious animals….because if you get them in a snare, that is truly the end of it!” Note also how arrogant the Committee Chairman is when asking “opponents” to come to the microphone…”Don’t all hurry up here at one time.”

I thank each and every one of the brave, goodhearted, and well informed souls who had the courage to be there and to speak up for the wolves, knowing full well the overwhelming opposition. It takes a special kind of valor to fight the battle, even when you pretty much know you are going to lose. But we have to keep fighting!!!!

If you go to this link, there is a link below the screen for “HB 73 – Revise Wolf Hunting Laws – Kelly Flynn” that takes you to the beginning of this testimony at 02:04:38 (a little more than half an hour of testimony).

Overall, it was a great way for me to see the face of the enemy…and he is pretty darn ugly! Such a sham!

    • Thanks for posting Francine. The bill is up for a second reading tomorrow and then if it passes a third reading it will become law unless Bullock vetoes it. It’s very telling to watch these hateful people who have absolutely ruined the state of Montana with their viciousness. It’s not a place people would want to visit anymore if they knew the kind of people who are running the state. I have no idea what Governor Bullock will do. Apparently they are being flooded with calls. Keep calling everyone, especially Montanans.
