ACTION ALERT: From Center for Biological Diversity – Tell Congress To Protect Wolves in the Lower 48!

Wolf recovery across the United States is in jeopardy

In the past two years, federal protections for wolves have been removed in the northern Rocky Mountains and western Great Lakes, leaving management decisions to individual states. States in these regions have approved aggressive hunting and trapping seasons designed to drastically reduce recently recovered populations. In 2012 alone, more than 1,200 wolves were killed in these two regions under the state plans. State management programs are as gruesome as they are ineffectual.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife now wants to remove protections for wolves in remaining lower 48 states — including the Pacific Northwest, California, the southern Rocky Mountains and Northeast – even though wolves are just beginning to recover in these areas.

Right now members of Congress are willing to take action to defend wolves in the greater United States. U.S. Representatives Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.) are circulating a letter to the Service opposing the hasty removal of wolf protections. U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) has already signed on as a lead co-signatory.

Please call your member of Congress today at (202) 224-3121. Tell him or her to oppose the removal of Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in the lower 48 states and to sign onto Reps. DeFazio, Markey and Grijalva’s letter to the Fish and Wildlife Service. Then use the form below to send a letter to your Representative today.

  1. And don’t just contact your US Rep yourself, ask all your friends and family to do the same. Can the wolves count on you to do this, now? The best way to keep wolves safe is to keep them on the Endangered Species List, permanently. And to Re-List all wolves in those horrible states where heartless morons are now persecuting and slaughtering them.

  4. Done. But I have to ask – does our government do anything else but write legislation to persecute wolves? Very little else gets done.

  5. I will contact all in my state which is fortunately California BUT even here the sick livestock tea party nut cases are all fired up – they didn’t like that people did not want a wholesale slaughter of Coyotes – just for the fun of it AND a belt buckle! The Modoc Sheriff ! even wrote their “newspaper” the hunters should stand their ground and do what they want and if anyone tries to interfer call the sheriff dept. for help! that is the mentality of these assholes! The SF Chronicle had story today about the poor Dept. of Fish & Wildlife (just changed from game and that has all the killers up in arms! – which I don’t understand – the word Wildlife has been included for years in the dept. names of the most notorious of killer agencies – USFWS for example) the killers are worried their “heritage of slaughter” will be infringed upon – DUH! The poor DFW is in the middle between groups that time is past for killing for the sake of a belt buckle & hanging it on the wall – no one eats Coyote or do they? But, since the DFW just killed two THIRTEEN POUND Mt. Lion cubs that were starving and hiding out under a porch I don’t hold out much hope.

  6. No, Nabeki. We have to keep writing and protesting here in Montana. We have to keep writing and calling and posting and writing letters to the editors. We absolutely have to keep the plight of the wolves on the forefront and we have to try and find ways to call upon reason. We cannot give up. The hunting season in Montana is almost open but there are more bills that will possibly pass and we have to resist and protest. In addition, we have to propose alternative wildlife management options. This is not over by a long shot and by the way, the bison are the next victims here in Montana.

    • Oh I agree Susi, I’m not saying we should give up but pointing out the nexus of the wolves’ plight. I’ll never give up until the wolves are relisted. They’ll never be safe as long as the states are controlling them.

  8. ” ‘Yes, in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time,’ he said.
‘Not the girls, but oftentimes guests of mine go up there. And I have a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that trace back in this
    country for generations,’ he continued.
‘And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake.’ ”
This is a quote from the obama that was published in a British newspaper ( The Daily Mail ) that I read online. It was included in an article referring to his attempt to appease the gun lobby as to his intentions on gun control, you can read it here, ( http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2272417/Obama-gets-gun-White-House-releases-photo-President-skeet-shooting-attempt-silence-gun-lobby-critics.html ). It seems to me he’s saying he’s also got a ” profound respect ” for the morons with brains smaller than an amoeba ( sorry if that sounds like I’m insulting amoebas ) that think it’s big and clever and oh such a macho thing to do, to cruelly trap and then shoot an innocent wolf while filming themselves laughing about it before posting it on youtube for all their fellow scrapings from the bottom of the gene pool to salivate over. Although I’m not an American, I’ve tried to do my bit to help wolves not just in the US, but in Europe as well, I’m English but live in the Spanish Canary Islands. I’ve written to some of the representatives addresses I’ve got from this site as well as others, sent emails and signed petitions from this site as well as in Europe, I’m still waiting for a reply from obama but I’m not going to hold my breath!
While I’m waiting for a reply, I’m going to try to contact Robert Goldman about his petition ” Protect Americas Wolves ” on Signon.org to see if he would consider approaching another petition site called AVAAZ.org. At the moment they have nearly 19,500,00 members worldwide, some of their petitions have raised 1-2,000,000+ signatures in a matter of DAYS for various urgent issues, so I am hopeful that Mr Goldman can use his eloquence to persuade AVAAZ to get behind a petition for wolves that with their worldwide reach could have a much bigger impact than one with a goal of 15,000 signatures. They also have a facility to start your own petition, from little acorns etc.

Keep up the good work Nabeki, you’re doing a great and worthwile thing.

    • Hi there Alf, Thank you for your great post. You can reach me through my Protect America’s Wolves! petition by going to the petition and then clicking next to my name where it says Contact. I love AVAAZ and would be happy to connect with you and do exactly that. By the way, the ‘goal’ of each SignOn petition automatically grows once a petition reaches that goal. I am not stopping the petition but am happy to do another one here and another one there etc. Whatever it takes to “Protect America’s Wolves!” and wolves EVERYWHERE.

At change.org “please stop killing us” re the wolves
In US .. I am planning on taking it down before Salazar leaves so I would love
To send him at least a 1, 000 signatures. … They have killed over a 1,000 wolves ..
Each signature should represents the precious life of a wolf …
We must continue to hound these officials who prefer the status quo .. All our voices together can make a lot of power !
The wolves need us now .. Send them love in all ways. … We know our system is corrupt and broken so we need to keep howling to fix it! Keep signing, calling, protesting and boycotting till our precious wolf and all wild beings get their full protection under the law!

  15. I’m so glad I’ve found this site………so many of you caring about wolves, wildlife. Yes we gotta keep signing petitions and do what we can to try to stop these awful killings.of wolves……….and that goes for the coyote too. People just seem to hate wolves and coyotes…….but to allow dogs to kill the wolves, even when the wolf is trapped, and to allow dogs to go in dens, and attack pregnant wolves and pups, it’s so low. i hope together we can have some influence to StOP this. I wish they would ban trapping too.
    Good Luck.

  16. Despair Does Not Help

I know that some people that love wolves sometime feel despondent when we see a serious problem while the majority of people seem to be only casually concerned about it. That is just part of our fate. I like the myth about Cassandra, who had visions of the destruction of her city, Troy. Supposedly Apollo cursed her always to know the truth and never to be believed. That’s often us, isn’t it? But please try not to be despondent for long. A wise spiritual teacher of mine pointed out that it’s no use being upset about a problem as you work on it. It only makes you less effective. We as a species have a lot of growing up to do, but we’re still here. As a person that loves wolves you have an enormous amount to contribute in your own particular way. Take action in the way that is best for you, but without despair!

  17. I’m going to write a letter to the USFWS requesting that they don’t take the gray wolf off of the endangered species list! Does anyone know when the USFWS is expected to delist the gray wolves nationwide? I want to know how much time I will have to write this letter.
