Wolf Wars Part 1000…

Wolf_Wars_Infographic_Center_for_Biological_Diversity.jpg

October 7, 2013

This banner,  from Center For Biological Diversity, pretty much says it all…although I think the Northern Rockies estimate is too high, Nobody really knows how many wolves reside in Idaho, Montana or Wyoming.  Jay Mallonee, Montana wolf biologist, believes Montana FWP’s data on wolf numbers is seriously flawed.  AND the chart doesn’t take into account the number of wolves who died in Montana and Idaho in 2009/2010. Over 500 wolves perished in the wolf hunt, Wildlife Services killings, 10j, poaching and general mortality…which would raise the total of dead wolves to over 2000, not including the ongoing wolf hunts taking place now, Wildlife Services slaughter and continued poaching of these beleaguered animals.

The Obama administration has been the worst thing  for wolves since their first  extermination in the lower 48. He and his cronies have undone the hard-won progress made to  bring wolves back from the brink!

  1. I don’t understand what’s happening to our natural world, or why it has become SO easy to dismiss wild life as ‘unimportant’.
You know I advocate for wild horses and burros, but I grieve for my wolves as well. I’m in California; keeping an eye on Journey gives me hope, especially in a state where wolves were completely destroyed long before humans had the chance to save them.
I see the near-complete lack of science or restraint in reporting of wolf numbers or their kills; the fabrication of their ‘rampant’ tendencies and the sneaky, underhanded tactics employed to de-list them, and the psychotic asshats such killing brings out of the underbrush.
Wild horses and burros have it rough as it regards the government ‘managing’ them in the loosest terms possible. But wolves (and let’s face it, pretty much all apex predators) seriously take it in the shorts. There seems to be absolutely NO line anti’s won’t cross in either blatant misrepresentation of wolf life or the sickening rabidity of wolf killers.
If any organization has an ice cube’s chance of making a salient, legal argument for saving wolves, the Center for Biological Diversity has the chops. I don’t know how they do it, but their knowledge of wild life and the law, their ability to win cases in federal courts makes them one of the top three organizations in this country who can.
I hope they can; any step forward to save wild life is a grace. But saving predators? Can save them all.

  6. I heard some encouraging news from my friend in New Mexico. Even though the wolf delisting and Mexican wolf public hearing in Albuquerque was cancelled because of the government shutdown, 300 people showed up and held a wolf rally instead. There are still people out there who will fight for wolves.

  7. In my opinion the only people left to protect or help the rest of the wolf population is the American people. The government does not care at all. The bigger issues have taken over now in DC so the hope that our government will rescue or care is forever gone. The same issues are against the Wild Horses also. The whole entire Southwestern USA is being taken over by big corp and the Oil and Gas industry. The sad part is this has been planned in my opinion for yrs. The people who write letters and protest are not being heard as I am sure the letters are being tossed in the trash. Its a sad time in our country, I would never have thought our country would be in this condition with no moral values for the Wildlife of North America.

    • Hold Obama responsible .. He caved into Tester in Montana and started the whole thing .. Traded wolves lives for Montana political capital .. A sham! And look now govt shutdown by the tea partiers he thought he compromised with back in 2011.. Nasty folks intent on destroying the diversity of all beings .. They have their exclusive hunt club and now want the entire nation to embrace their gun toting NRA perspective. I’ve had enough!
Let’s take our country back from these radical folks. .. We love our wildlife ! Keep up the pressure ! Do not back down or say we can’t do it! We can! They did ! So it’s our turn now!
      Howl louder!

  8. These wolf wars, so aptly named, are true and horrific. We must put an end to this hysterical madness and centuries of superstition and misinformation by ranchers that fuel this blind hatred for our brother creatures the wolf. We can, with reason and science, win this one…but time is running out…. The wolves alive today know, intuitively, that it is the positive work of man that has brought them back to the lower 48. If we fail them, they may not be able to come back as remarkably as they did the first time we saved them from total extinction.

  11. The other thing is the Western states do not speak for the entire country. There are other areas in this country where wolves could still be introduced. (And no, nobody expects wolves to come back to their entire former range, USFW). But this little bit of range is pathetic, plus they are being hunted again! We still are so primitive when it comes to certain things. The West is rapidly losing it’s charm as a tourist destination and is going to turn into an overdeveloped mess. Do they even have any old-growth forest left? There are so many other areas such as the Great Lakes, if they don’t follow suit, that people could visit.

Too many animals are killed for human needs – it reminds me of an HP Lovecraft novel – 7 billion pairs of eyes in one big protoplasmic blob eating everything in sight. Terrifying!

  16. Nabeki,
Thanks for keeping us informed about the continued wolf slaughter.
Do you have recent totals (by state) of the wolf losses?
Is wolf season over in Montana?
I think that the trapping season goes until February.
The wolf death count is down in Montana, in spite of the cheap ($50) Out-of-State Tags, because we have so few wolves left in our state.
It really disgusts me that Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is promoting a bill to allow ranchers and property owners to kill wolves on their land year round. It will result in a “blood bath” where property owners will shoot anything that they see and they will be using electronic calls and bait to lure animals to their property.
It shows a total disrespect for the wildlife that makes Montana such a unique and beautiful place to live.

  17. Once again wolves are in the crosshairs. This time Montana’s wildlife commission wants to change its rules to open the floodgates on more cruel and unnecessary gray wolf killings.

The new rules will allow landowners or their “agents” to kill a wolf on their property without license or permit. All that’s required is that the landowner think the wolf is a “potential threat” to human safety, livestock or domestic dogs. But “potential threat” is not defined — and so the lives of Montana’s wolves can now be ended on the whim of anyone with a spare trap or a loaded gun.

The rules will also allow year-round traps for “problem wolves,” which could lead to the deaths of other, blameless wolves and indeed other species.

These new rules are deeply disturbing. They aim to reduce Montana’s recovering wolf population to just a few struggling wolves.

Please write Governor Steve Bullock and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks now. Tell them to stop expanding opportunities to kill wolves.
