More Stupidity From The Fringe…..

Effects of elk overgrazing in Yellowstone

“The top photo……from a paper by Ripple and his colleague Robert Beschta, was taken in 1991; the photo below is from 2002 and illustrates the recovery of streamside cottonwoods after just seven years of wolf presence.”…Todd Palmer and Rod Pringle

Wolves are being slaughtered left and right but that’s not enough for the wolf haters. They still  find it necessary to visit this blog and spew their anti wolf dogma. The main talking points are centered around the sub species of wolf reintroduced in 95/96.  The story goes that Occidentalis is the big, bad Canadian wolf who replaced the sweet, loving Irremotus. That of course is BS. Yes, Occidentalis was the sub species reintroduced to Yellowstone and Central Idaho..but the myth that they are super wolves is absolutely ridiculous. Wolves are wolves, apex predators who are vital to healthy Eco-systems.

Unlike human hunters, who kill the strongest and genetically sound animals, wolves select out the weak, sick, old and yes sometimes the young, which  helps control ungulate populations. Wolves don’t hide behind AR-15′s, they go toe to toe with their prey, that’s fair chase. Human hunters use heavy firepower, traps, snares and every sneaky trick in the book to torture, abuse, maim and kill animals.  Trophy hunters have nothing to be proud of. NOTHING! They wouldn’t be such big, brave “hunters” if they were limited to using their bare hands. Fair chase my a@%.

Canus lupis Irremotus are very similar to Canis Lupus Occidentalis, who are a bit heavier but still both sub species are wolves. They live in packs, hunt cooperatively and put family above all else.

“Canis Lupus Irremotus…..This subspecies generally weighs 70–135 pounds (32–61 kg) and stands at 26–32 inches, making it one of the largest subspecies of the gray wolf in existence. It is a lighter colored animal than its southern brethren, the Southern Rocky Mountains wolf, with a coat that includes far more white and less black. In general, the subspecies favors lighter colors, with black mixing in among them”…..Wiki

Occidentalis has always lived on both sides of the Northern Rockies US/Canadian border, since wolves know no boundaries. Anyone who believes otherwise is living in a fantasy world.  The idea that Occidentalis is foreign to American soil is absurd. They’ve been crossing back and forth across that “border” for tens of thousands of years.

The burning question I have for the professors of wolfology is if Irremotus was loved so much, why the hell did their wolf hating forefathers try to wipe them out?  Of course  attempting to reason with the unreasonable is an exercise in futility, so I don’t expect a cogent response to that question.

The other favorite talking point of wolf haters is the Yellowstone elk herd. Wolves are accused of decimating the elk in Yellowstone, when in fact it was the feds who were killing Yellowstone elk for decades, in the wolf’s absence, due to the damage elk were wreaking in the park.

“Once the wolves were gone the elk began to take over. Over the next few years conditions of Yellowstone National Park declined drastically. A team of scientists visiting Yellowstone in 1929 and 1933 reported, “The range was in deplorable conditions when we first saw it, and its deterioration has been progressing steadily since then.” By this time many biologists were worried about eroding land and plants dying off. The elk were multiplying inside the park and deciduous, woody species such as aspen and cottonwood suffered from overgrazing. The park service started trapping and moving the elk and, when that was not effective, killing them. This killing continued for more than 30 years. This method helped the land quality from worsening, but didn’t improve the conditions. At times, people would mention bringing wolves back to Yellowstone to help control the elk population. The Yellowstone managers were not eager to bring back wolves, especially after having so successfully ridding the park of them, so they continued killing elk. In the late 1960s, local hunters began to complain to their congressmen that there were too few elk, and the congressmen threatened to stop funding Yellowstone. Killing elk was given up as a response, and then the population of the elk increased exponentially. With the rapid increase in the number of elk, the condition of the land again went quickly downhill. The destruction of the landscape affected many other animals. With the wolves gone, the population of coyotes increased dramatically, which led to an extreme decrease in the number of pronghorn antelope. However, the increase in the elk population caused the most profound change in the ecosystem of Yellowstone after the wolves were gone.”.…..Wiki

Elk numbers had swelled to over twenty thousand while wolves were away…a very bad thing for Yellowstone. As Aldo Leopold so eloquently states in Thinking Like A Mountain:

“I have lived to see state after state extirpate its wolves. I have watched the face of many a newly wolfless mountain, and seen the south-facing slopes wrinkle with a maze of new deer trails. I have seen every edible bush and seedling browsed, first to anaemic desuetude, and then to death. I have seen every edible tree defoliated to the height of a saddlehorn. Such a mountain looks as if someone had given God a new pruning shears, and forbidden Him all other exercise. In the end the starved bones of the hoped-for deer herd, dead of its own too-much, bleach with the bones of the dead sage, or molder under the high-lined junipers.

“I now suspect that just as a deer herd lives in mortal fear of its wolves, so does a mountain live in mortal fear of its deer. And perhaps with better cause, for while a buck pulled down by wolves can be replaced in two or three years, a range pulled down by too many deer may fail of replacement in as many decades. So also with cows. The cowman who cleans his range of wolves does not realize that he is taking over the wolf’s job of trimming the herd to fit the range. He has not learned to think like a mountain. Hence we have dust-bowls, and rivers washing the future into the sea.”

Do your homework wolf haters and stop parroting talking points drilled into your heads by the hunting and ranching cabal.

Dispelling a myth, eh? The original wolves in Yellowstone were C. l. irremotus…. the wolves introduced were C. l. occidentalis. Guess where they came from?

Dear Jan,
I have lived in the West all my life. I am dedicated to conservation and habitat improvement for all native wildlife. The Canadian Grey Wolf is not native to Idaho, Montana or Wyoming. The Rocky Mountain Wolves that were documented living here in the 1980′s and early 1990′s were scavengers and did not efficiently hunt in packs. The native wolves were solitary, except during mating season, had large territories and made very little impact on prey species within their range.

The efforts to control the exploding population if this invasive species of wolves are warranted by the respective States because they need to protect native wildlife, livestock, tourism, habitat, and a number of other issues which are more important than accommodating a Federal Government’s program to establish a feral nightmare.
It is not about killing wolves. It is about protecting our ecosystems.
Respectfully,
O.

This is the biggest hunk of shit that I have ever read. You tree hugging fucks need to get a real job! “Protecting the Wolves” from the big bad ranchers and hunters. Please!

The “reimbursements” for cattle killed in New Mexico, are still yet to be seen. Countless cattle killed on ranches and not a penny in site. Furthermore, when the average cost to introduce one of these wolves is upwards of $1 million dollars, and our tax dollars go to this bullshit rather than the present deficit that our failed president has bestowed upon our country…

Thought you might like to read a response from one of the sickest part of the population. How much time do any of you spend on wildlife conservation? How many hrs per year do any of you spend on habitat renewal? I am willing to bet not as much time as your average hunter. I enjoy every second I spend in the wilderness I personally see hundreds of animals in a year. I also see the impact on the animals from over population. I see the side of nature most of you want to pretend doesn’t exist. The starving animals and the displaced wolves, coyotes, fox and others. You say its wrong to kill a coyote. Say that when you find one in your backyard about to rip your child apart. Ask a rancher how they feel about wolves. You won’t hear many say they like them.

Now onto “trophy hunting”. Trophy hunting and caged hunts are as different as night and day. Any respectable hunter would never take part in a caged hunt. Most people that do are rich wall street types that have no morals in the first place. A true Trophy hunter is not a butcher. They are men and women just like you. However they posses what some call the alpha gene. Most of these ” butchers” and “serial killers” see more animals than all of you combined. Maybe the kill one or two. They kill them because they are the oldest and largest of the type. A damn hard thing to do. Instead of blaming hunters maybe you should focus you misguided anger towards the developers. The ones who keep pushing the city further into the habitat of these animals. Believe it or not I love animals just as much if not more than most of you. I however am not afraid to get my hands bloody fixing the mess created by the non hunter. You might hand out meals at a soup kitchen. But hunters are the ones who put the meat on the plate.

I live and hunt in Wyoming. Now hear me out, I do not hate wolves and do not want them to go extinct, but wolves have killed over 50% of our elk herds near Yellowstone and have completely decimated our moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, and deer herds. I agree that shooting a wolf right when it exits the park is kind of unethical, and that Wyoming needs wolves in its ecosystem. The thing is, these wolf populations have to be kept in check, and hunting is a good way to do that.

These hateful views are represented by the hunting and ranching monopoly,  who in turn control policy makers in Washington, on both sides of the aisle. Their disinformation campaign has spread like a virus across this country and is contributing to the mass slaughter of wolves now taking place!

      • There is great info on this page just wish someone would dispute some of the anti-wolf fact-aganda that they keep putting out, as though they own testosterone, and actually hunting is associated with smaller penis size, serial killing, and pedophilia (seriously , there are a lot of studies that show that, it has to do with compensating). They are the ones who keep acting as though they love wildlife by choosing which species they want to kill today so they have more of another species to kill tomorrow. They keep thinking and pretending they have some kind of righteous indignation as people who are truly from the land when it is obvious from their rhetoric they are of the same mentality that slaughtered Native Americans and I’m pretty sure still despise Natives.

RESPONSE to John: “Thought you might like to read a response from one of the sickest part of the population. How much time do any of you spend on wildlife conservation? How many hrs per year do any of you spend on habitat renewal? I am willing to bet not as much time as your average hunter.” THE AVERAGE HUNTER BUYS A HUNTING TAG FOR SMALL CHANGE AND MAKES MONEY FROM THE PELT. BIG HUNTING ORGANIZATIONS FUND WILDLIFE RESERVES FOR THE PURPOSE OF HUNTING NOT ANIMAL PROTECTION. THEY DO A LOT OF GOOD FOR THE LAND, TRUE. THEY ARE DESTROYING THE ECOSYSTEM BY DISRUPTING THE NATURAL ORDER OF THE ANIMAL KINGDOM, WHICH EVENTUALLY EFFECTS THE PLANTS TOO. I’D ASK YOU TO GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE BUT YOU WOULD PROBABLY EAT HIM TOO. ALSO RANCHERS HATE WOLVES BECAUSE THEY (AND THE WILD MUSTANGS) ARE ON LAND THEY WANT TO GRAZE CATTLE. IT’S CALLED A GREATER PROFIT MARGIN. TROPHY HUNTING IS EVERY KILL THAT ISN’T FOR FOOD ONLY. HAVE YOU POSED FOR A GRINNING PIC? YOU’RE A TROPHY HUNTER. DID YOU GET YOUR HANDS BLOODY FIGHTING HAND TO HAND OR DID YOU USE A HIGH POWERED RIFLE OR BOW?

RESPONSE to Nobody: “wolves have killed over 50% of our elk herds near Yellowstone and have completely decimated our moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, and deer herds” THAT’S NOT FROM THE USDA OR NASS, THOSE NUMBERS ARE FROM WOLF-HATERS, REAL STATS ARE AT: http://www.westernwolves.org/index.php/wolf-conflict-facts

RESPONSE to matt: “This is the biggest hunk of shit that I have ever read. You tree hugging fucks need to get a real job!” IN YOUR LANGUAGE – AAAAAAAHHHHH!!!! OR IN ENGLISH, MOST ANIMAL SUPPORTERS HAVE A REAL JOB, A LOT ARE BIOLOGISTS AND OTHER WILDLIFE EXPERTS WHO WORK IN THE FIELD. ALSO, MOST PEOPLE IN THE HUNTING STATES. NOT INNER CITY FOLK, BUT MOST NORMAL HUMANS RESPECT ANIMALS AND WILL SUPPORT.

RESPONSE TO O: “I am dedicated to conservation and habitat improvement for all native wildlife. The Canadian Grey Wolf is not native to Idaho, Montana or Wyoming. The Rocky Mountain Wolves that were documented living here in the 1980′s and early 1990′s were scavengers and did not efficiently hunt in packs” ALL NATIVE WILDLIFE INCLUDES THE WOLVES. YOU ARE BICKERING OVER THE SUBSPECIES, THE EXTIRPATION OF THE WOLF HAS A DEVASTATING EFFECT ON THE WHOLE CHAIN AND EITHER SPECIES WILL FILL THAT VOID. DO YOU BICKER ABOUT TOO MANY COYOTES WHILE YOU WANT THE WOLVES GONE? SINCE YOU CLEARLY REFUSE TO ACCEPT AN INVASIVE SPECIES ON PRINCIPLE ALONE, ARE YOU NATIVE AMERICAN? BECAUSE NATIVES RESPECT AND CAN COEXIST WITH THE WOLVES.

Haven’t we learned our lessons yet? Didn’t we go through this bs in the 1700’s through early 1900’s when we decided that it would be a good idea to kill off all the wolves? Why can’t ranchers put their heads together and come up with a simple idea of keeping wolves off their lands? Such as roving random lights, and movement detector lights? How about hiring night hands to watch their herds with pellet or bean bag guns?

Maybe things have changed since I was there but I don’t think so. A while back a Maine hunter shot a new mother of twins in her backyard…I think she was wearing rabbit fur gloves and supposedly he mistook her for a deer. It was a huge controversy and I believe the guy got off with very little punishment. The husband of the dead woman moved back to the mid west and the children lost their mother.

But that’s not to condemn an entire state. I think Bob Goldman can answer this better than me.

  6. John says, “Instead of blaming hunters maybe you should focus you misguided anger towards the developers. The ones who keep pushing the city further into the habitat of these animals.” So which is worse: theft, or murder? Driving someone off his land, or killing him? I’m going to go with the latter. I would much rather see a small population of wolves living their full life span on a small habitat, than a large population who are routinely shot when they are just one or two years old. John has the same problem as many trophy hunters: he is mainly concerned about species survival, and seems to think that we feel the same way. He has no concept of the worth of the individual. John, you are not going to get anywhere in a debate with us until you show us that hunting honors the worth of individual animals — but of course you have to use arguments that avoid the real point, because hunting will never respect individuals. Hunting destroys individuals by definition.

“A true Trophy hunter is not a butcher. They are men and women just like you. However they posses what some call the alpha gene.” And what is that? The desire to demonstrate their dominance by crushing others under their heel, I guess. “The alpha gene.” What a cute name for cruelty.

“They kill them because they are the oldest and largest of the type. A damn hard thing to do.” So what? The fact that it’s a challenge does not make it right. And killing the largest and most superior of the animals is a great way to weaken their genetics.

“Believe it or not I love animals just as much if not more than most of you.” So it’s okay if I shoot you? All I have to do is say “I love you” afterward, and that makes everything all right? Words, empty words.

“You might hand out meals at a soup kitchen. But hunters are the ones who put the meat on the plate.” There is no meat on my plate, thank you very much, and I’m doing just fine without it.

I am not a wildlife biologist but with extensive reading over my lifetime the “they are going to kill everything” mindset is just plain wrong. no self respecting predator is going to kill everything – they wouldn’t have anything to eat in a short period of time!!! well, man does kill more than they need but we don’t hear ‘stop the humans’. oh, btw, I hate trophy hunters but have no problem with hunters who eat their kill. wolf anyone??

    • I wouldn’t say never Ellen…yes it’s an uphill battle but what can be done can be undone. Wolves were once hunted to near extinction in the lower 48 and it wasn’t until a Republican (Richard Nixon), signed the ESA that things started to turn around for wolves.

Wolves have been betrayed over and over since their delisting, even some Native American tribes in the Northwest have approved wolf hunts, The Spokanes, The Colvilles and now the Salish. On the other side of the coin the Ojibwe are fighting for wolves.

Our movement has been very unorganized while the other side have the politicians and hunting and ranching organizations to lobby for them. On our side, the mistake was relying on the Big Greens to save wolves when in fact they have a hard time agreeing on which Starbucks to buy let alone how to defend wolves…so that is the material problem. Very little help from many of the Big Orgs, who actually have the cash to make a difference. I place my faith in the grass roots movement, we’re finally coming into our own. I’m beginning to have hope again even though things look bleak..many more Americans are waking up to this tragedy and want to help.

  10. I grew up in a hunting family which actually tried to have a working understanding of wildlife biology as well as healthy ecosystems. The ignorant excuses voiced by most of the “hunters” who have commented here are demeaning to all hunters, and it’s really a shame! You offer justifications for your actions which have no basis in reality. As a RN who has worked in an Emergency Department for 25 years, I find this bordering on delusional. The actions of some of you simply fly in the face of all reason. You demonstrate no knowledge of Wolf Society or even recognition of any organization to it! When you kill the prime pack leader you are dooming that pack to a constant shuffle, and this unrest and stress dooms many more animals in the group. It’s not possible to maintain healthy packs this way. The same is happening inn Elephant Herds, where the matriarchs and bulls are killed for their tusks, and those individuals left behind never do recover the society they had before.
I think the main problem is that you put yourselves above these beings, and in order to maintain the facade you create these myths of threats to livestock, other wildlife populations, even people in their own backyards! Rationalization is a widely used technique to avoid culpability. I encourage you all to step back and look for a new perspective. Examine your hearts and review your actions. I hope you can realize your true place in this wonderfully woven life, and that we are all connected within this world, to every other living being, including all the animals. We are only a part of this world of animals, plants, minerals….not the whole thing, and not better than the rest! We are to be stewards of this planet, not rapists and murderers….no matter what your belief system. If there is a moral core to your beliefs you will have to come to the same conclusion.
In case any of you wonder, I have guns, and I have hunted, and there is elk in my freezer. I also take care of every hunter who comes to my ER with an injury, with compassion and care given to every single patient I see. I hope some of you can find a way to compassion and come from that center rather than this hate filled place you demonstrate with the rhetoric you repeat, and with the actions you take against wildlife and our ecosystems. Your sense of entitlement is nauseating.

  11. I have tried, on several occasions, to have informed discussions with wolf hunters. Discussing actual data on population numbers, the ecosystem benefits when wolves are present in a given environment versus the data on the ecosystem when wolves are absent from the environment, etc., falls on deaf ears. The statistical data from Yellowstone alone makes for a convincing argument FOR wolves in nature. Data on livestock losses due to wolves is ignored by the hunters despite the fact that it proves wolves are a minimal threat. Wolf attacks on humans are even more minimal and actual data shows less than 30 in the 100 year period of the 1900s. Most of those were from rabid animals, not healthy ones. Despite this, the verbal venom flows from the pro wolf hunting camp. If one simply reads the posts by most of these anti wolf people, you will find a study in incomplete sentence structure, poor spelling and grammar which suggests a high scholastic drop out rate… from elementary school. The “reasons” and manufactured data they quote is empty and absent of scientific facts. The bottom line is they want to kill and all of their arguments are nothing more than excuses to kill. I cannot imagine that God is pleased with these people. Furthermore, I do not believe that God will allow brutal killing of HIS wolves to go unpunished. I also believe the lawmakers who allow needless hunting and trapping of “trophy” animals are equally responsible. They too will be called to account for their sins.

Never in anything I read or heard from any wolf biologist or my personal experience of actually hearing wild wolves and being next to them when I volunteered as a park ranger in 1973 at Isle Royale National Park and living with two of them as I traveled around the country lecturing about true wolf behavior coincides with anything these anti wolf people are saying. Wolf society revolves around the pack. Wolves are not primarily scavengers. The first wolves to reappear in the northern Rockies after 60 years of absence reintroduced themselves to Glacier National Park in Montana in the mid ’80s. Where did they come from? Canada! They were called the Magic Pack.

I was raised in a very big city and was taught that hunting was only done by evil people and to stay away from those kinds of people. I understand now as an adult WITH A BA IN PSYCHOLOGY that some folks in rural areas were raised to hunt for food. I NOW BELIEVE THAT ALL FOLKS THAT TROPHY HUNT AND CANNED HUNT – THAT KILL FOR FUN – ARE SADISTIC SATANIC SOCIOPATHS THAT ARE A REAL THREAT TO EVERYONE AS THEY ARE ADDICTED TO KILLING AND SHOULD BE IMPRISONED FOR LIFE WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE! (BECAUSE OF MY RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, I DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE DEATH PENALTY)

  18. The whole ‘subspecies’ argument is ridiculous. First, its a bunch of ‘anti-science’ and scientifically uninformed wolf-haters trying to ‘sound’ scientific when they know nothing about the science.

Second, Genus/species is meaningful. Subspecies really isn’t and at best an indicator simply of geographical adaptations. In general, species become smaller in hotter climates and larger in colder climates so its easier to thermo-regulate with more surface to volume ratio. Bergmann’s rule. “This is a basis for Bergmann’s rule, whereby in a group of closely related animal species, those at higher latitudes are larger than those that live nearer to the equator.”

The idea that before wolves from Canada were reintroduced, there were wolves running around here that were gentle, happy, traveled alone, and never ate anything but mice is the stupidest thing I ever heard. Wolves were exterminated completely; the smartest of the last wolves had toes or a leg missing, were shot up, mangled, etc. I doubt if any of these people could say they ever saw a wolf. Heck, many of these folks wouldn’t know the difference between a wolf and a coyote. All pseudo-science.
