UPDATE: October 21, 2014
The numbers changed today on the DNR 2014 “wolf harvest”. It’s now 92 wolves dead but the numbers have moved around on the chart. Hmmmm. Notice there is one less dead wolf in Zone 1, where trophy hunters went over the legal limit. Yesterday the number of wolves killed in that zone was 37, now it’s 36. So one dead wolf was moved from Zone 1 and added to Zone 3. Also notice that it says “Zones will close when quotas are reached”. So how did they allow so many wolves to die above the legal limit? It’s bad enough there is a hunt at all but hunters in Zone 2 killed FOURTEEN more wolves than they were supposed to. And in Zone 1 they killed 5 wolves, now it’s been changed to 4, over the legal limit. That’s 18 dead wolves who shouldn’t be dead. This is outrageous!!
I hate that I have to look at this chart. I hate that I have to ask about dead wolf numbers. I hate I used the word “harvest”, if only to describe what’s on the chart.
Have wolf advocates been reduced to counting dead wolves? It’s so incredibly maddening.

It’s bad enough 91 wolves have been slaughtered in Wisconsin since October 15 (just five days) but notice Wisconsin trophy hunters are going over legal limits of killing wolves. In Zone 1 by 5 wolves and in Zone 2 by 14 wolves. Is the DNR ignoring what amounts to poaching of wolves by not monitoring the hunt closely and letting hunters kill wolves with impunity?
Please flood their lines and ask why hunters have been allowed to go over the legal hunting limit in Zone 2 by 14 wolves and Zone 1 by 5 wolves. Do they care?

The mistake the DNR made is making it the responsibility of the killers to contact them and report their killings. They don’t have the higher mental capabilities for ethics and morality, and doing the right thing, even knowing right from wrong. Just take advantage. They broke the law, and need to be held accountable for it. If the DNR had any balls and we know their leadership doesn’t, they would stop the hunt right now for hunters breaking the law, and since they can’t manage wolves properly, the Federal government ought to step in and relist wolves. What a disgrace.

Also, I noticed AmmoLand is crying about the Wolf Patrol, calling Rod Coronado a convicted felon, blah, blah, blah. I’m sure there are plenty of convicted felons in the hunters’ ranks – we know there are poachers, and felons aren’t allowed guns usually. I’m sure there is a list of names of all of the convicted felons in the hunter’s ranks – I think the Great Lakes actually published a piece on it somewhere.

A federal judge just ruled, September 23, 2014, that Wyoming wolves have to be re-listed and Wyoming must come up with a conservation plan which is not a wolf killing plan and that hunting is ceased immediately. He stated that Wyoming is too hostile toward wolves to manage them. The same can be said of Montana and Idaho and Wisconsin and elsewhere. These wolf jihad states should be relieved of wolf management indefinitely because they are run by traditional wolf hating elements. Wyoming had wolves classified as varmints and eligible for shoot on sight and allowed only a narrow corridor outside Yellowstone where they could exist and even there hunted in season. In Montana last year (2013) “sportsmen” got 5 wolves for one $19.00 ticket. Since then landowners have been given permission to kill up to 100 “threatening” wolves, which really amounts to an open season year around for landowners and their designated “agents”. This year there are no quotas for any areas except outside Yellowstone and Glacier. Idaho intends to get their wolf numbers down to as little as 150. Who was it, Ed Bangs (?), that pulled that out of their arse for number of wolves as target numbers for delisting, 150, 30 breeding pairs. ID, MT, WY can easily support 700 wolves. Actually, the wolf numbers seem stabilized in in the 600’s in MT and ID, but both states want much more killing. But these states, sportsmen and yokels have latched onto those numbers as a rationale for liberal kill policies. Wolves will manage their own populations relative to wolf pack elbow room and prey. General killing called “management” is asinine. The hunting, trapping season starts in Montana in September and goes to February 2015. Matters for wolves seem to be getting worse each year with the traditional enemies of ranchers, sportsmen, and yokels with their folklore, lies and myths and parochial ignorance, mostly about elk predation and stock predation, wolves as threatening, wanton killing of wolves, wolf size (giant, alien, Canadian wolf), and degree of wolf predation, numbers of wolves. State management of wolves is wolf jihad, not science, a hunter-rancher-wildlife agency led war on wildlife.

Kate…I think Wildlife Watchers should sue under the Public Trust Doctrine. The basic premise is: “The keystone of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation is the principle that wildlife are owned by no one, but are to be held “in trust” for the benefit of all the people by the government.

Fire the Wildlife Agencies (USFWS, Interior, state agencies, USDA Wildlife Services, BLM)
The US government has long been in the wildlife killing business. It offered bounties on predators, poisoned and gassed prairie dogs, allowed the near extinction of bison, prairie dogs, black footed ferret, the wolf (wolf bounties), wolverine, and marginalized the grizzly, lion, and many others. The war on coyotes has been unrelenting. Hunters and ranchers, bedfellows of the wildlife agencies nearly wiped out most wildlife. With the advent of wildlife agency hunting regulations, the hunter has been somewhat contained; and now even count themselves as “conservationists” because they have essentially farmed game sport (recreational killing opportunities) animals and marginalized predators on the erroneous rationale of less predators to share game with the more game (recreational killing opportunities). Instead of an emphasis on wilderness and wildlife ecology, USDA Wildlife Services kills nearly 4 million animals a year and state agencies millions more in recreational killing opportunities and “management”. State wildlife agencies use hunters to “manage” “sporting” game and predators. Ranchers may tolerate big bird and other sport game birds, elk, bison and deer and antelope; but are very hostile to predators. Ranchers and farmers destroy wildlife habitat with the plow and grazing not only on private land but ever more and more on public land facilitated by the US government in leased grazing, leased farming and leases to extraction industries avenues. Encroachers on public land often, in turn, adding insult added to injury, asks the federal government, such as Wildlife Service, to kill animals that are convincing their encroachment. Conservation efforts and new agencies such as ESA and EPA and private conservation agencies have and are battling for balanced ecologies, the predators, and many animals of no concern to sportsmen, ranchers and farmers, and extraction industries and development interests. Agencies, like the USFWS often cave into ranchers hunters, state wildlife agencies, conservative state legislatures, a government tradition of really prioritizing those interests. The arguments that threatens remaining wilderness and wildlife is as old as civilization, making a buck by the traditional enemies of wildlife. What is not appreciated enough is what little is left: In the US roughly 2.6 % in the lower 48 and another 2.5 % in Alaska; and this is under continuing and unremitting pressure from, guess what, the traditional enemies of wilderness and wildlife, still too often facilitated by the wildlife agencies. Private conservation agencies often find themselves in conflict with wildlife agencies who should be on their side and the side of preserving wilderness, balanced wildlife ecology, and the predators who are essential to the balanced wildlife ecology. The wildlife agencies, state and federal, need firing and revamping to emphasize wildlife preservation, wildlife viewing, and a heritage of wilderness and wildlife in what is left of the available habitat. There is something terribly wrong when we see wildlife agencies aligning with ranchers, farmers, “sportsmen”, conservative state legislatures. It is time for major upheavals of them, their agendas, their heads and replacing them with priorities on preserving, recovering, protecting what is left of wilderness and wildlife, not siding with the traditional enemies of wildlife and wilderness (ranching, hunters, conservative state legislatures and populace, extraction industries, and development and such parochial ilk that echoes their sentiments)

Because wolves are social animals and these scumbags lure them out with baby wolf calls or they kill a pack member and leave it there and when the rest of the pack goes looking for them they get rewarded with a bullet. Thats why wolves were so easy to kill off the first time, their social ties with the family. Coyotes don’t have that deep bond except with their mate and thats why they survive no matter what. Its a sad state of affairs that so many people can have such irrational fear, hatred and ignorance of an animal that has co existed with its prey for thousands of yrs and never caused anything to go extinct. Throw man into the picture and everything changes and he blames it on the wolf. F ing bastard ass shits.

Just called the general info number and a women named Dixie answered and she said she did not know about the killing and the over the limit. I held on and she came back with the answer a expert will call me back is not that strange. I told her I was reading about this and either way it was bad press for them, if it was true or not !

Richie, they double speak because it sanitizes the act. It also makes them feel better about themselves. Could they admit that trophy hunting is nothing more than legalized sadism? I think not. They’re just harvesting, you know, like cabbages and corn. Never mind that wolves are the largest member of the wild dog family. Wild dogs/domestic dogs, separated by just 2% of their DNA.

I said I want to speak to a staff person re this slaughter she kept calling it a trophy hunt and I said it’s a slaughter because hunters are not obeying your numbers…she was very accommodating and pleasant

The hunts are disgusting and unnecessary but of course we all know that!! I just had someone else call DNR in Wisconsin and they now have set up a separate line one accesses to register a complaint.
Gov Walker up for election and this is all under his watch …this is egregious mismanagement of WI policy.
We have got to get this out of the hands of the wolf killing states.
I also called Earth justice law section and they said they are looking into the legal ramifications of this mismanagement
We know there is the same mismanagement is in all the wolf killing states, but this is particularly mind numbing because of their own quota system they are not adhering to and the methodology the hunters are allowed to employ including the use of 6 dogs each and machine guns.
This is just not a ‘hunt’ it is a massacre…
I will now call Sec Jewell’s office and ask them what they are going to do about WI DNR mismanagement of their “wolf hunt”

But we won’t give up on them Gudrun, the tide will turn, wolves have legions of supporters. There are more wildlife watchers than there are hunters, we’re just badly organized and depended too much on the Big Greens to get things done. The other factor is most wolves are located in right wing states, like Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. There isn’t anyone in state government to appeal to. So thats where the change has to come. It may not be as fast as we’d hoped but it will come. Hunters are a minority in this country but they have tremendous clout. Many of the agencies that support trophy hunting have been around for a hundred years. It’s going to take time but things will change.

This really enrages me! While Congress fights each other, they don’t care for the animals being killed hunting, shelters, for fur, the sea life! This is wrong! You know it’s wrong, yet no one stands up to stop the killing and cruelty! They are not insignificant! God gave them life and we have no right to take it! Shelters are killing animals unjustly and in cruel ways! Many ACOs have been fired for doing just this! So stop fighting each other and do something to help these poor mistreated animals! They do it for money! I don’t know how but they adjust results and do whatever to avoid imprisonment! Please take this seriously and help them! I don’t know why they kill without a second thought, but it is disgusting to see it go on year after year!

“Harvest” is not only a euphemism for killing but also reflects the view that the agencies have of wildlife as a commodity to be bought. Although they are supposed to manage wildlife for everyone, at least at the state level, it’s consumptive users (hunters and fishermen) that pay their salaries. We need to find a better funding mechanism. It’s also sad that the majority of wildlife managers have taken courses in ecology and understand the important role of predators. But politics ends up driving management.

I agree with everything you stated in your post. We DO need to become better organized, financially and otherwise. We are fighting against the NRA, various hunting groups, and worst of all, our government! Our only tool at this point seems to be venting on social media. There needs to be a “mother ship” that truly stands for the protection of wolves that will lead this charge. I am sadly afraid that the killers view pro wolf forces as little more than cry babies. We need someone with clout to get this machine up and running.

I called Dept of Interior and was told to make a remark re Wolves I needed to call Fish and Wildlife. I did that and was only allowed to talk to a recording. Pitiful.
I have a BIG problem with Dept of Interior not minding the “shop”. They are actually the ones that oversee this whole shebang and they tell me call FWS. I get that but I should be allowed to register a comment at the Dept of Interior…..Shameful! If they hadn’t allowed the delisting by Sen Tester none of this would be happening.
Wolves are self regulating, we are not.
I will call the White House today …I have called WI DNR, Gov Scott Walker, Dept of Interior, Fish and Wildlife and soon the White House. As well as Earthjustice law office alerting them to this latest debacle.
There seems to be no public agency paying attention to the plight of our beautiful wolves that are held in Public Trust for all of us not just hunters. In my petition, “please stop killing us “@change.org I note that all wildlife is held in public trust for the people of America under the the public trust doctrine . What does this really mean?
Maybe it is time to find out and go to court. And get this madness stopped by we the PEOPLE !

Over 100 wolves dead in Wisconsin and it’s only been a week! This is beyond ridiculous! This has got to be the quickest wolf kill rate I’ve ever seen in a modern wolf hunt and it is highly disturbing to think about!
And that photo is heart-wrenching to look at! My sympathies go out to that poor trapped wolf (and to all of the other victims of this slaughter)!
