      txfinder…It’s not confirmed, I’m sure they’ll draw out the drama for the next few weeks but how many 3 year old female wolves with dead collars are there roaming around near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon? She was shot near Beaver, Utah which is almost straight up from the Canyon, about 190 plus miles. She was probably making her way back up North. Absolutely heartbreaking! And yet the USFWS want’s to delist wolves across the country when they can’t even protect them from these yahoo’s while still listed. She definitely had a target on her back.

      Not a good way to start out the New Year, I agree.

        Summary:
        Under the Utah Wolf Management Act, wolves must be managed so as to prevent the establishment of a viable pack anywhere in the state where the wolf is not listed as threatened or endangered until the wolf is delisted. If a wolf is discovered in an area where wolves are listed as threatened or endangered, the division must request its immediate removal from the state by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

        I have advocated for Mexican wolf habitat to include the Kaibab, the Henry, Tushant, Uinta and Wasatch in order to establish necessary gene flow.
        I seriously doubt that the Mexican wolf recovery plan will do this, although Carroll et al. mentioned it as necessary in a strong scientific evaluation, which in small part, affected the recovery plan.

        Without Utah, Mexican wolves, especially at the low populations of 300-325, from a single female and seven total wolvers, will trend toward homozygosity, and genetic problems, as well as lessened ability to combat diseases of certain type. The recovery effort, without Utah wolves would fail in 14 generations to 100 years or so..
        They MUST be allowed to link up, and be protected.

        In the coming two years, Congress is going to actively abandon and kill wolves (if only because they will legislate them to the mercy of the thrill-killer hunters in most states).
        Right now, the ruling on Upper Great Lakes wolves stands as a precedent through which the smaller populations being persecuted in the Northern Rockies, can be protected. Some large conservations orgs are preparing!

        It was HSUS, by the way, that got the argument right in MN, which raises hopes, as that org combines the ethics of domestic animal lovers – and their % – with wolf , carnivore, and wildlife and wildland advocates. The science is sound on the necessity for thousands of wolves connected and protected,, to help them survive this human onslaught.

        I was devastated for the loss of what iss almost certainly the Kaibab Babe. DNA test will tell, but long-distance dispersal is quite rare.

        Gun removal is the answer. Fear & hate can only diminish with profound cultural change, and as you know, from present SW Asian history, that can be kept alive for a thousand years.

        Regardless of her identity, this wolf’s death is a major tragedy for wolves and wildlife conservation!

        That said, I really hope and pray that the shot wolf was not Echo. The thought of our Grand Canyon Wolf being killed by a hunter is unbearable!

    This broke my heart, sadly it seems each time a Wolf has entered Utah it has been shot and killed and there is always the same lame crap excuse, I am sorry to say but they have the same meat head mentality as Idaho and Montana, I have found quite of few of them very crude and very poorly educated,still living in the dark ages.

      The Wise Elder….It’s the “coyote excuse”..they use it all the time. Will we ever know the truth about what happened to Echo? She was certainly a thorn in the side of the “let’s delist all the wolves” crowd. There is more to this story, I’m not buying it for a second!!

    Great news, Journey, his mate, and his pups are now considered an official pack, which has been named the Rouge Pack! Also, another wolf has been spotted in southern Oregon, near the California border, and it is not considered to be a member of the Rouge Pack! It seems like the gray wolf is starting to make a recovery in the southern Cascades!

    In other news, Mexican Gray Wolves were given a double-edged sword with the revised species management plan. There were some wonderful and much needed changes, as the Mexican Wolf is now listed as an endangered subspecies (separate from other wolves) and they now have more territory to roam! However, it is now easier to kill a lobo and, if the sources that I’ve read are correct, there is a population cap of 325, which is way too low for viable recovery.
