So Sorry Warriors I’ve Been Gone So Long, Have A Sick Horse….

Dearest Wolf Warriors,

Wanted to let you know I’m still here but lots of bad mojo has been happening in recent weeks with my horse. He got sick with colic about two months ago and almost died. Then two weeks ago he suffered a severe injury to his back leg. Nobody knows how he did it but he has a laceration from his hock to his fetlock. The vet came out right away but his tendon was sprained and the leg swelled up so the edges of the laceration split apart and he was unable to stitch it. Now it has to granulate as an open wound and it is nasty. The dressing must be changed often and it’s super complicated along with the fact it’s a back leg, so there’s always the danger of being kicked. He would never do it on purpose but the leg is sore and his sprained tendon is still healing. So things have been very, very hectic and I haven’t had much time to write blog posts. I’m trying to keep up Wolf Warriors and Howling for Justice on Facebook. If you could support those pages that would be great. I’ll be back and start posting again in a few weeks as soon as he’s healed.

If anyone thinks buying a horse is the expensive part, believe me it’s not. Their vet bills are crazy expensive, so it’s a good thing they’re healthy animals but when it rains it pours.

Thanks so much for understanding. I didn’t want you to think I’d forgotten about the blog because I’ll never abandon the wolves or you. ❤

Nabeki

    • birdpond….So good to hear from a fellow horse owner. It just seems that horse problems come in groups. He hasn’t been sick for 8 years and then twice in a few months. He has a long way to go on wound healing but we’re on our way.

    • Thank you Pete, really appreciate your kind words. Since you have horses you know how difficult it can be to change dressings on back legs. I want to make sure he doesn’t have a nasty scar which could cause the skin to shrink and cause him to limp. So lots going on. I wish the vet had been able to suture it but now it’s healing as an open wound and everything depends on how it granulates.

      Thanks again (:

Here’s some positive news re: wolves for a change: Calif. now has a breeding pair for the first time in 100 years. At the Calif. Dept. of Fish & Wildlife meeting in southern Calif. last night, all of the many speakers (except for just a couple) were pro-wolf. A lot of people want a thriving wolf population in the state and want Calif. to show how we can co-exist with our wildlife (we’re the only state to ban bobcat trapping and wildlife killing contests). No. California not so much but I was encouraged by all the support last night.

    • Tena, thank you for the well wishes for my horse (:

As for California, I was disappointed California came up with a first draft “wolf plan” that may try to delist wolves when their population reaches just 50-75 wolves, which is ridiculous. But I’m encouraged Californians are very involved in wolf recovery in their state and believe this draft will not stand. Californians spoke out on mountain lions, who haven’t been hunted in the state for decades. So I never discount the power of the people.

Great to see all the support for wolves in California!

  16. Hey, look,
While nonbiological things are quite subject to randomness, someone as sociable as a horse is sometimes calling for interaction with those with whom she is bonded. In many animals, in places like zoos, aquariums, and junior high schools, not getting amicable feedback can lead to negative affect – anxiety, and unhappiness , often leading to self-injury.

The most important effects of the bogus “treatments” touted are actually that closer care and empathy.

It is not to suggest that you are failing in anything like that, but, some individuals need more social interaction than do others.
Even that is variable within the individual – if trauma to another has occurred, all in the social group benefit from better lovin’ care being expressed.

    • Mak, just want to let you know that my horses receive plenty of attention, they are loved and cared for in the best way and don’t have deep seeded psychological problems, if that was what you were trying to imply. I really find it an odd response. If I didn’t care about him I wouldn’t be spending the time, energy, let alone expense, to see he gets the best of everything. Further it’s been over eight years since he was either sick or injured. If you have horses you know they are very healthy animals but when things happen they usually happen in clusters.

  19. Horse owner… totally get it! The bitterly cold weather since Xmas has made outdoor/ ranch life miserable here in Coalville, UT. I barely have time to respond to emails much less write a blog. Thankfully, we had a nice day for our Wolf Rally at the capital… about the ONLY nice day! Good luck with your friend, mine is Teddy and he currently has a wrapped hind leg (sigh) though not as serious… I hope, we’ll see.

  20. I am sorry to hear about your beautiful horse. Being in cat rescue my wife and I know how unexpected injuries can dampen your spirit and cause your heart to ache.
Take the time necessary to get your horse back to good health and we wolf warriors will continue our fight. Remember…quitters never win and winners never quit and we will never quit until all the animals are treated with love and compassion.

    • Thank you Joseph, yes we are not quitters and no matter what they through at us we’ll always fight for the wolves. You are an amazing group of people, just like the wolves, you have stamina and heart and love of family. Maybe that’s why we bond with them because the are so much like many of us. Of course not all humans are compassionate toward animals or we wouldn’t be in this fight.

I appreciate the warm wishes send to my horse. He is healing but it’s going to be a long road, at least another six weeks, for this to heal and hoping the scar will be minimal. I’m taking care to change the drsg often and keep some compression on it to keep the swelling down.

      Thanks again!

      • I am so sorry about your four-legged companion. I hope this finds him well on the mend.

With regard to the wolves, it’s unfortunate it takes our fighting/policing others to do the “right thing”. If they were good people, it wouldn’t be necessary. Being a good person means doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

  21. I’ve followed your blog for a very long time without posting a comment (surely more than a year but two? Who knows?), but when I was reading this post I had an awful ping of worry. There was once a time when my dear aunt had a pony who came up with mysterious lacerations and found out it was foul play. No one was ever caught, but there was much evidence to reveal a person had come into the stables and caused the injury. I hope so dearly that such a thing hasn’t happened, and taking care of your horse should be the first priority, but if you think someone could have (intentionally or unintentionally) hurt your horse, please notify law enforcement. I’m not sure about where you live, but here, if someone harms a horse, it’s treated very seriously.

I’m sorry, that part of the message was full of negative energy, so here’s some very positive energy to counter that: Everyone in my family has had equines for most of their lives, and we know too well that health problems just spring up in droves, even if totally unrelated. I’m here for you and I understand your situation all too well. I send to you and your horse lots of love. No matter how dark it gets, remember that love and hope will always be your lanterns.

  25. Hello! I’ve wanted to touch base with you for quite a while and have followed your website and your updates. Sorry to hear your horse has not been doing well. I’ve had huskies for many years and know how caring for animals can break your heart.

I am an author and live in Madison, Wisconsin and will be reading from my new novel, Fly BY Night in the Minneapolis area at Magers and Quinn on Tuesday, March 15th at 7pm. (please see the announcement below)

I’ve been following your website and your work, along with that of the Friends of the Wisconsin Wolf and was wondering if maybe we could meet during this event that my publisher is sponsoring in Minneapolis. Also, I was wondering if you know some other local writers from Minnesota who have books or stories about wolves and the issues at hand that might be interested in sharing the evening and participating at the bookstore and could contact someone at Magers and Quinn for us to turn this evening into a more informative talk about threats to the Endangers Species Act, co-existence with wildlife and the work that you do. I know there is a group Writing about Wolves but I am not sure if they are in Wisconsin or Minnesota. If this is something that you’d like to talk about please give me a call (608) 577 1229 or email me back and we plan a program or forum to can draw on some of your local contacts and writers you might know to spread awareness of this most pressing issue. Thanks. Below is the info on the evening, Take care, Andrea

Tuesday, March 15, 7:00pm – Magers And Quinn Booksellers (map ) Andrea Thalasinos reads from *Fly by Night*

On the same day Greek American marine biologist Amelia Drakos receives word that funding for her beloved Seahorse Laboratory has been cut, she discovers that her deceased father had lived a secret life.

With foreclosure and unemployment looming, as well as the fallout from a brief, confusing love affair, Amelia reluctantly becomes curator for Minnesota’s Mall of America Sea Life Aquarium. At the same time, a string of perplexing e-mails from someone with her late father’s name, Ted Drakos, arrive. Ted claims that he has important information about an inherited property on Lake Superior. And that he is her older brother.

When Amelia and Bryce, a long-time friend, go to check out the property, they discover week-old, orphaned, husky/wolf-hybrid pups under the dilapidated porch. Amelia adopts the pups and takes them back with her to Minneapolis, where they introduce chaos into her already crazy life.

Amelia and Bryce soon find themselves embroiled in the midst of a very angry environmental debate regarding reinstatement of the wolf hunt in Wisconsin. Amelia wonders if she and her newfound brother can overcome the sins of their father and find peace.

In *Fly by Night*, Andrea Thalasinos shows that family secrets can jump-start a new way of looking at the world.

*Andrea Thalasinos*, Ph.D., is a professor of sociology at Madison College. She is the author of *An Echo Through the Snow*, an inspiring novel that combines her longstanding passions for dogs, nature, and native peoples. Andrea lives and writes in Madison, Wisconsin.
