Wedge Pack Slaughter Hangs Like A Pall Over Washington State….

This is a do-over of my previous post in which I got a few facts wrong. The alpha pair is dead, effectively ending the Wedge Pack.  Yes, a few wolves got away, it was estimated there were either 8 or 11 wolves in the pack but killing off the alpha pair will cause those wolves to disband. And what about the pups? Were they killed?

This is a very dark week for Washington state, 6 wolves killed in three days. I have no doubt other wolves will fill the Wedge Pack’s territory and it will be rinse and repeat of this situation if cows are still grazing in the Wedge unprotected.

End grazing leases and kick these ranchers off our public land. That is the only solution to this, not pandering to them and using taxpayer dollars to kill native wolves. Badly done WDFW, badly done!!

Wildlife agents finish job of eliminating wolf pack

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The collar around its neck was supposed to lead biologists to a better understanding of how an alpha male wolf leads its pack.

Instead, that GPS collar is what sharpshooters in a helicopter used to track down and kill the followers of the Wedge Wolf Pack in northeast Washington state. And on Thursday, after leading most, if not all, members of its young pack to their deaths, the alpha male was shot and killed.

Howl Across America

May 26, 2011

I want to take the opportunity to once again thank Louise du Toit for creating this amazing song for Howl Across America.

Howl Across America was launched in July 2011 to protest the brutal  Idaho and Montana wolf hunts. We continue to demand the end of wolf hunts and wolf slaughter.

Wolves in the Northern Rockies were stripped of their ESA protections in a travesty of justice when the US Senate passed a budget bill with a wolf delisting rider attached.  On a dark day, in the Spring of 2011, wolves were delivered to their enemies on a silver platter. President Obama signed the bill into law, making it the second time in just a few short years he had delisted wolves in the Northern Rockies.

We call on the USFWS, Ken Salazar, President Obama and Congress to right this wrong and relist gray wolves before state management silences their howls forever.

Louise has been a stalwart supporter of wolves and this cause. Thank you again dear Louise.

August 12, 2011

“The song for HOWL ACROSS AMERICA was written by Louise du Toit as a contribution to the August 2011 events, organized by NIWA (Northern Idaho Wolf Alliance), Wolf Warriors, Howling For Justice and individual wolf advocates around the world, protesting against the killing of wolves. Music, lyrics, performance and recording by Louise du Toit in Greece, 2011.”

Created by members of NIWA (Northern Idaho Wolf Alliance), Wolf Warriors, and Howling For Justice, HOWL ACROSS AMERICA is calling on all wolf advocates to speak up for the wolves in August 2011. Please join their page at the following link and add your voice of protest against the war on our precious wolves”….Louise Du Toit

HOWL ACROSS AMERICA

I watch the wolves go by
It seems as if they fly
As they run across the never-ending plane

With a spirit fierce and wild
And playful like a child
They embrace the earth in sunshine, snow and rain

And we don’t have the right
To keep them from the light
To hunt them down; to let them die in pain

So speak up loud and clear
Let the whole world hear
That roaming free is how they must remain

HOWL ACROSS AMERICA
To keep the wolves alive
HOWL ACROSS AMERICA
Help them to survive

The earth is full of signs
That we have crossed the lines
But we refuse to listen, see or hear

But endless tears will fall
When we will lose it all
We must stop at once to interfere

HOWL ACROSS AMERICA
To keep the wolves alive
HOWL ACROSS AMERICA
Help them to survive

HOWL ACROSS AMERICA
To keep the wolves alive
HOWL ACROSS AMERICA
Help them to survive

ALERT: Candlelight Vigil, Nampa, Idaho (Monday January 30, 2012) STAND UP FOR WOLVES!!

UPDATE: January 30, 2012

The information I have is several people made it to Namba for the vigil, everyone was from Oregon, so a big shout out to those who traveled to Boise for this event. The details are a little sketchy but apparently an Idaho state biologist engaged the group in conversation.

Not sure if the media was present but I believe pictures were taken. In all it was a positive for wolves. We must continue the pressure on state game agencies to let them know there are wolf advocates who care about the slaughter of wolves in Idaho and Montana.  The death toll now stands @ 410 wolves. I will post more information on the vigil as I receive it. Keep up the good work wolf advocates!

Two devoted wolf advocates held a candlelight vigil, Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, in Nampa, Idaho, to bring attention to the plight of wolves in the Northern Rockies.  The news media covered the event and this incredible picture was picked up by the LA Times.

Their motivation:

“I was deeply disturbed when i heard the wolf was being taken off the endangered species list. And I needed a way to gain sympathy for the wolf. I believe that there are oil, minerals, coal, and timber resources in areas with wolves. For me i see plain and clear they kill the wolf so they can get at the resources which equals money. The only thing these corrupt corporations care about is money.”

Now they’ve organized another candlelight vigil for wolves in Nampa.

“Monday, January 30th at 4:45 pm at 3101 S. Powerline Rd., Nampa, Idaho. There is going to be another candle light vigil for the fallen wolves. If you missed the first one let’s try again.”

From Ann Sydow of NIWA:

At their last vigil, in November, only the organizers showed up !!
But they still got the awesome picture in the LA Times !  They also got local media attention,
Please attend and share with any other wolf supporters you know in the Boise area.  Thanks!

Four hundred wolves have been slaughtered in the Montana/Idaho hunts. We can’t stand silently by while the body count continues to rise without speaking out and bearing witness.  Our mission is to draw national attention to this tragedy and alert the public that America’s wolves are being slaughtered. These wolves are gone forever and will not be coming back.  Please speak out for the fallen 400.

Here are two signs made by Ann S. that were used at NIWA’s  Full Wolf Moon Vigil on January 9, 2012. The Idaho wolf death toll has obviously increased since then.

If you don’t live in the Boise area or are unable to travel there, you can hold your own candlelight vigil.  Tell your friends and hold a vigil together. Call your local media and let them know you’ll be holding a vigil for the slaughtered wolves in Montana and Idaho.

And we are making a difference. Yesterday, Saturday January 27, 2012,  Wolf Warriors and Howl Across America were mentioned on the front page of the New York Times, in an article about the iconic. wolf trailblazer,  OR-7.

“This month, people across the country attended full-moon, candlelight wolf vigils organized by groups with names like Howl Across America and Wolf Warriors.”

Howls To The Wolf Advocates Who Participated In the Vigil Tonight!!

What a beautiful photo, Courtesy Keith n Anna

Thank you everyone who participated in the vigil  for the fallen Montana/Idaho wolves, who continue to be slaughtered in the hunts.

We received wonderful responses from all over the world.  Thank you to Ann Sydow and Nancy Taylor of  NIWA who organized the vigil in Coeur d’ alene. To Arctica and Nini, Wolf Peoples’s eight month old wolf pups, who were so cute on camera. To Beckie and  Trap Free Oregon for organizing the vigil in Ashland Oregon, to Wally, to Tallulah for the vigil in Santa Barbara, to Dr. Raven, to Agnes Delanis in France to Lynne S. , Katie, Brianna,  Keith n Anna for your wonderful picture, Wazaiyata, Norma, Sandra, wolfdog, Holly C., vibeke, Iszaria, Gitte, Erika,  Sheila, Barb, Josie, Zia, Captain Sakonna, N.Parry and all the dedicated wolf advocates who lit a candle for  wolves tonight.

NIWA had great success @ their vigil in downtown Coeur d’ alene.  KREM Channel 2 Spokane, KXLY Channel 4 Spokane, The Coeur d’ alene Press and NPR covered the vigil.  More on this tomorrow and hopefully people will be posting their pictures on Howl Across America so we can compose a montage and post them here on Howling for Justice. If you don’t want your face shown on the picture we’ll white it out.  We’d like people to tell us where your picture was taken but you don’t have to include that information. Also if you have a link to any media that covered your vigil let me know so I can post that as well.

HOWLS TO ALL FOR MAKING THIS A SUCCESS.

WE’LL BE DOING IT AGAIN IN THE NEAR FUTURE BECAUSE THE HUNTS CONTINUE!

For the wolves, For the wild ones,

Nabeki

Howling For Justice Turns One!!

Thank you dear readers!! You’ve made this blog a success with over 200,000 hits in our first year!!

When I started this journey it was a very dark time for wolves. They were hunted in two states and Wildlife Services was continuing to conduct “shadow wolf” hunts for agribusiness.

Wolf advocates were stunned when the Obama administration followed in the footsteps of George Bush and stripped wolves of their ESA protections. The year that followed was the worst wolves have experienced in the Northern Rockies since their reintroduction.

The inspiration for this blog came from the iconic wolf Limpy, who was shot dead outside Daniel, Wyoming on the very day the then Bush administration delisted wolves the first time, in March 08. He died for nothing, a sad end for a stellar wolf. This blog is dedicated to his memory.

Here’s a look back at September 2009, when the hated wolf hunts began in the Northern Rockies!

It’s been an unbelievable year, watching our beloved wolves slaughtered in the hundreds. So many stories went untold. So much death. Remember this?

Hunters Kill Two Wolves In Idaho On Opening Day

=======

Over five hundred wolves died in the Northern Rockies in 2009 and they continue to be targeted by Wildlife Services for agribusiness.

Gray wolves remain under siege from ranching and hunting lobbies. Robbed of their wolf hunts, they are scheming and plotting, trying to find a way to undo Judge Molloy’s decision to relist wolves.

But we are here to stand with wolves, stronger every day, determined to fight on, we will never give up and never give in. May this be a better year for our wolf brethren. Onward Wolf Warriors!

For the wolves, For the wild ones,

Nabeki

Run Wolf Warrior Run

July 18, 2010

Run, wolf warrior, to ends eternal
Through the wreckage of the death of the day
Scent of silence under starlight spinning
A captured beast within a human skin

Are you searching for long lost landscapes
Lit by flowers and crystal cascades?
Where the lamb lies down with the lion
Where the wolf is one with the wild

Run, wolf warrior, through kingdoms’ chaos
Senseless cities and ghost towns towering
Howl, O hunter, though few know you’re crying
Face upturned into that midnight moon

Are you hunting for mystic mountains
Where the air is like liquid laughter?
Where the beasts inherit the earth
Where the last again will be first

Run, wolf warrior, to hide your hunger
The rain will wash away the pains of the day
In your eyes there are cold fires burning
Tongues of flame that can never be tamed

Are you running from Man’s delusion
Majestic madness and your exclusion
To where the lamb lies down with the lion?

Are you running down ancient pathways
Through this dark and deserted land
To where man is once more a child?

Are you running to freedom’s fortress
By the side of wide open seas
Where the wolf is one with the wild?

Run, run, run…

Run, run, run, run, run, run on, run on through the rain…
