ALASKA
Alaska has a deadly predator control program. They passed the “Intensive Management Law in 1994” which gives the Board of Game the power to order the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to kill increased numbers of predators if they determine the moose or caribou populations have a decline.
Wolves and bears can be killed to boost game numbers, which in not based on science but politically driven, just as wolves are killed for agribusiness in the Northern Rockies. Their excuse for the law and “intensive management” is many Alaskans depend on caribou and moose for sustenance. Of course Alaska is not going to run out of ungulates because of wolves and bears. This is a terrible “management tool” that persecutes wolves and bears. It’s similar to the persecution gray wolves suffer in the Northern Rockies, who may be killed for agribusiness by federal agents (Wildlife Services)

im a major wolf enthusiast. im young but have a large interest in our wild canine friends. wolves help our echosystem in keeping the elk population in tact. if they disappear they will greatly effect the order of nature. if everyone would take the time to understand these misunderstood creatures it wouldnt be a problem and we can move on. the future of the wolves depend on efforts of conservationists and everyday people to take a stand and stop the killing of these essential and misunderstood animals.

I am truly blown away by the scope of your site. I just stumbled across this blog & posted it up on my Facebook profile. Here are some of my likeminded thoughts on this wonderful kindred spirit we know as the wolf…
This noble creature is the most enduring living symbol of our endangered wildlife & the very icon of wildness in the American West. The arguments for this rule change are largely political, emotional, & without merit; while the arguments against the rule are scientific, logical, & based on facts, not myths & misconceptions about wolves. Two of the primary reasons wolves were eradicated from their original habitat were these very reasons, ignorance & misinformation. Yet here, these same ideals are being used to support a ruling to further endanger wolves…
Wolf populations have not reached the recovery goals necessary for delisting. The recovery of the Northern Rocky Mountain wolves is one of the greatest success stories of the Endangered Species Act… one supported & paid for by the American people. The return of the wolf has revived both the environment & the economy of the Northern Rockies. Sadly this dramatic success is being reversed just to satisfy a few politically powerful & slaughter shameless scumbags…
I hope that what’s left of America’s conscience will unite against this senseless attack on an endangered species that is a world-renowned symbol of the American West…

Hi Nabeki,
This is obviously a travesty, what is the best way to motivate en
masse? ONE GIANT petition on change.org. WE need to have one
huge signature page, hundreds of thousands signing one petition.
I have resources and friends that are like minded with substantial
resources. How can we effectuate change, boycott those states that
are allowing this gruesome hunt, ? Yes!
Would a huge add in the NY Times accomplish anything?
I know NRDC has a rememdous following, do you/we act in
concert with them?
Really I think that the only way to get the MOST people outraged
is by getting pictures of wolves in leg traps and being shot, on CNN.
I don’t know anyone at a major media outlet, but someone in your
group must. Any person who owns a dog, upon seeing a wolf shot
will recoil in horror in seeing the graphic images. There are 10’s
of millions of people who would react. We need to get the story on
CNN immdeiately for a huge impact.. NOW that the iconic 06′
female has been killed is the perfect time…

We have tried for the last four years to get somebody, anybody on MSM television to cover this story but nobody has been willing to do it except Jane Velez-Mitchell. She’s had several shot spots on her show, she is dedicated animal rights activist. But as for the rest of the networks and the cable..they will not cover this. I think it’s because on the run up to the election they did not want people to know that this all happened under a Democrat president. So they just look the other way.

I am a wolf advocate who will stand tall against anyone who irrationally slaughters wolves. Harassment from cowardly barbaric wolf killers will not faze me in the least as I am well prepared to deal with them on any level “they” care to engage in. Management should be based on SOUND SCIENCE, not politics. Wolves don’t care about politics, they don’t care if they kill a cow, all they care about is of having a meal for themselves and their families. And the government is treating them like objects, not living beings. I completely support scientifically based management, but THIS? THIS is simply RIDICULOUS!!!
I think this is only the beginning of the end for wolve sin the West…

By the way, I was looking around the Greenpeace website and I found an article, of whom I quoted this:
“The imminent resumption of wolf hunting raises the question of whether conservation efforts around the world are there for the sake of the species and the ecosystems in which they live or simply for the sake of future exploitation.”
And exploitation with a still not genetically viable popuation of wolves. This is insane.

I think the answer to Greenpeace’s question Loua is very clear, the wolves are here for future exploitation. They are treated like vermin and killed like them as well. It’s disgusting. But we have to keep speaking out and letting the powers that be know the majority of the American people and people around the world, do not want wolves hunted or slaughtered for agribusiness.

As long as we have certain individuals and “conservation” groups like Defenders who continue to kiss the asses of these cow growers, I don’t think this situation will change.
The people that hate wolves don’t abandon their principles for fear of “losing funding”. They stick together ,,,,when was the last time you heard of anyone from the livestock industry want to “compromise” or write guidelines on “how to coexist with predators”? Their groups are pro-active, holding anti wolf rallies, sponsoring speakers, writing letters to the newspapers etc.
Ever heard of Defenders or any other large mainline conservation group holding a pro-wolf rally? Hell no! ….. don’t want to piss off the ranchers!
Montana recently held a hearing in which the wolf quotas were increased….the Greater Yellowstone Coalition was the only group that showed up to question the decision. On the “kill more wolves side” was the National Wildlife Federation, The Montana Wildlife Federation, the ranchers and outfitters.
Read George Weurthners book..”Welfare Ranching” or Denzel Ferguson’s book…”Sacred Cows at the Public Trough”………..
If you donate to any “conservation group” tell them they won’t get another cent till they speak out LOUDLY for wolves.

Pertinent contacts and address should be posted regarding the Mexican Wolf as well. These wolves are in a critical state. I have been supporting the Mexican Wolf for a long time. They need to enforce poaching of endangered species laws open another recovery area in the Grand Canyon area at the very least.

There is no reason for wolves being murdered..Animals in the wild are there for a reason and humans are killing them all in an alarming rate, along with pets.. Those that murder wolves and other animals go home and pet their dogs or cats and see nothing wrong with that.. I don’t know how they sleep at night.. I was thinking.. Back in history, the Europeans murdered cats and that caused the black death because the cats were not alive to kill the mice, who carried the plague.. It’ is possible that another plague could occur because the wolves are here to help us not to have something like this happen now..

The problem is http://www.saveelk.com. This site demonizes the canis lupus species and is where all of the sentiment against wolves comes from. The “facts” offered are nothing more than outdoor magazine articles, letters, hearsay, unpublished articles, and pictures of carcasses (so-called wolf kills). The pictures are of just carcasses. There is no evidence of wolf tracks and size of tracks using a tape measure. There is not biological evidence of wolf bite marks on the carcasses. For all we know, it could just be a road kill that some carnivorous birds got into!

I agree groups like that are demonzing wolves but IMO have no credibility, after all the creator of saveelk was found guilty of poaching a bull elk. How hypocritical can you get, you accuse wolves of killing elk, which they have to do to live but then go out and poach an elk.

As for those pics, who knows where they get them. Wolves are predators and no predator kills it’s prey nicely. Do African lions tap their prey on the shoulder and say, excuse me but can I kill you? Being a wolf is so hard, only one in ten hunting attempts are successful. Now they’re facing bullets, traps and snares, it’s so horrific I find it hard to think about.

honestly, i feel we ,the supporters of wolves and a healthy eco-system , one in which our predators(excluding humans) are vital, are swimming SO against the tide.but i will not give up.i am an artist ,painter/drawer of wolves ,and will do what i can through my medium to raise people’s awareness.i have a show coming up in atlanta next month ,march,2012 .one of my wolf drawings is in a jackson hole resort hotel,where i hope it can reach people, who might take time to think a little more deeply about their natural world..an audio accompanies this piece with my voice as i try to speak(as best i can) for the wolves and their continuing importance in this world.thank you for your blog..i don’t usually write on them but this one touches me deeply.

We are the most killing species on Earth and the most prolific killers. We slaughter so many animals for food, but foolishly support the industry when they worry about wolves killing a woefully small number of food for themselves and we endorse their torture and their pain and sufferering for the few. We must work to protect this magnificent animal and one of God’s creatures.

Hi All,
As an international person watching this, I did feel powerless to have my voice heard as the feedback forms require an American address.
My solution was to google the address of each of the senators etc. and use their address to voice my concerns, I then told the next senator that this was the last address, he could check to see and of course his address would be used for the next right up to the White House, that way everyone new that someone recieved an e-mail all the way up and could be follwed all the way down.
I politely addressed my concerns and as a potential tourist my dollars could be spent elsewhere, I did say wildlife management is a co-operative process between a number of parties and a balanced humane approach in our modern world is what the majority of thoughtful people and of course healthy eco-systems need.
Australia did its part in killing native animals through ignorance our eagles, dingoes suffered as did our environment with the extinction of a large amount of native animals due to introduced species. The native animals we killed maintained a balance even with introduced foxes and cats, we now look after these animals. We do have a long way to go because of the sporting hunters and the kill, kill mentality, but hopefully we can progress.
Thanks for the list, I will continue to work my way through the list and if any international people are having trouble, do what I have done.

I’ll have the info on Wisconsin and Minnesota up soon. Idaho and Montana start first. I hope the judge grants an injunction today to stop the wolf hunt in Wisconsin while the lawsuit moves forward.
I’m going to be off and on the website the next couple of days but should have everything updated by Wednesday, September 5.

WA state is having a formal briefing on the Wolf Conservation and Management Plan, this Friday, Oct. 2nd, 1:00pm-5pm PDT. The Wedge pack case will be included and Wolf Advocates will be providing input. It is open to the Public. It’s open season on Wolves in Minnesota as of November 3rd. The DNR has approved hunters/trappers to kill up to 400 wolves during the season. I’ve no idea how they’re going to enforce this, as I’m sure there will be plenty of hunters that won’t report their kills, making the numbers more like 800-1000. There are currently about 3,000 wolves in Minnesota, which is a fairly stable, healthy population. Killing wolves is only going to make the packs breed more, especially if the alphas are killed. Allowing hunting of wolves is not the solution. They are sacred animals that deserve to be treated with respect. I agree with the statement in the article that questions how the hunters would fare if they were without their weapons and equipment. Mano a mano with the wolves; that is an encounter I’d like to see.

Of course, the very people who support the killing of these wolves will be the first to complain when the populations of deer, elk, and other wild animals get out of control. They’ll then pass additional laws to allow the hunting of those animals. Nature has its own balance, and man has disrupted this balance to the point there is no going back. We will be the cause of our own demise.

How about listing the actual names and contact information of the ranchers, hunters, trappers and guides who are directly responsible for killing (i.e exterminating) wolves and driving the legislative insanity? I would think this information is available and a matter of public record. Perhaps publicly exposing these cowards for their actions and what they are will have some effect.

If we truly want to stop the wolf slaughter, and we know, the majority of Americans want/support our wolves and do not support the wolf wars, we need to find a film producer, who is willing to film the slaughter and show it on tv and grab national attention!
I’m confident, if the American public could witness the brutality of the wolf wars and their slaughter, we would have a national outrage!
Of course, we would need the locality of specific areas of ongoing wolf slaughter!
Let’s get this before the American conscience, nationally. Let’s bring this tragedy into American homes and let them view the slaughter before it’s too late!

Fighting for wolves and bears in Alaska where the big green environmental groups have opted out …Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, World Wildllife Fund, others. No activity for wolves. Shameful!
Only Greenpeace, and Center for Biologial Diversity (also Cascadia) are active and aggressive in Alaska; we have major killing fields of wolves thanks to the Alaska Board of Game, a miserable rougé agency made up totally of trappers and hunters with no non consumptive members to represent the 80% of Alaskans who do not hunt or trap. Battlegrounds include Prince of Wales Island in the Tongass National Foest where the Alexander Archipeligo Wolf is in steep crisis decline, a subspecies of the grey wolf and rare; also in eastern Alaska where wolves denning in Yukon Charley Fivers National Park Preserve are slaughtered when wandering outside preserve bounds, shot in large numbers from aerial gunners of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game and private pilots, all courtesy of the Board of Game. Also in steep decline, wolves living within Denali National Park wander outside its bounds and are legally killed by a few trappers and hunters. Such has greatly damaged wolf family groups which tend to fall apart when the alpha females and males are trashed outside park bounds. A proposed no kill easement that would be agreed to in a land exchange between US Dept. of Interior NPS and State of Alaska languishes as this new hunt and trap season 2016 is again open, again threatening the million dollar wolves (in this, the nation’s premier national park…formerly named Mt. McKinley Nat. Park, visitors flock to the park from everywhere asking to see wild wolves). The visitor industy brings $550 million past year 2015 to just this part of Alaska to visit the park and see its wildlife. These are shameful blotches on a state that boasts to its wildlife splendor while killing bears and wolves in large numbers.
