I have not updated this page since 2010 because the wolf hunts started again in 2011 and I was busy reporting that but it doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten these wolves but it’s a grueling process, which entails scouring monthly wolf reports for dead wolf packs or individual wolves, who’ve been killed in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.
This slaughter is separate from the wolf hunts. These wolves were wiped out as a subsidy to ranchers and the taxpayer picks up the tab. Pretty slick, ranchers get to graze their cattle dirt cheap, their cattle destroys our public lands, Wildlife Services kills our predators for them and the American people pay for it. The non-consumptive user doesn’t have any say in this at all, they could care less what we think.

This is an incomplete list of wolf packs that have been eliminated by Montana, Idaho and Wyoming since 2000. I am not even close to the number of packs killed but I wanted to start listing them now. Please let me know if you have packs to add. I am working my way backwards from 2008 to 2000. I don’t have the 2009 wolf pack data for the entire tri-state area of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. 103 Idaho wolves were killed by WS in 2009.
I want people to remember these wolf packs, who have been wiped out for the livestock industry.
Wolves are collared and tracked relentlessly like no other animal. As soon as game managers deem them chronic depredating packs the kill orders go out to Wildlife Services and more wolves lose their lives.
It’s always the same headlines, repeated over and over, wolves killed for livestock depredation. The states have a tit for tat type management. one or two cows, one or two wolves.Ninety percent of livestock deaths are caused by weather, reproduction and disease. Predators kill very few livestock and when they do it’s coyotes not wolves who do most of the killing and still it’s a small percentage of losses sustained by the 105 million cattle that graze on public and private lands. Domestic dogs and vultures killed more cattle than wolves in 2005. (NASS) But the states don’t want you to know these facts because it’s doesn’t fit into their narrative of wolf demonization.
Who are these wolves dying for?
Current wolf “management” is outdated, arcane and based on political and cultural ideology. Wolves are being punished for being “wolves”. Are we returning to the scorched earth policies of the last hundred years? You decide, as the number of dead wolves increase with each passing day.

This was a much beloved pack of nine, killed for agribusiness. (ten wolves were killed in all).
The alpha female, Alabaster, was at the end of her pregnancy when she was gunned down along with her six sub-adult pups, all the wolves were collared, it was like picking off fish in a barrel.
Alabaster was renowned for her beauty. The killing of this pack was an enormous tragedy.

Entire Nine-Member White Hawk Wolf Pack
Killed in Central Idaho by Government Gunners
By sometime this weekend (and it may have happened already) the entire White Hawk wolf pack of central Idaho’s Boulder-White Cloud Mountains will be dead. Ten wolves including the pregnant alpha female who is the famous white wolf of the Sawtooth Valley will be gunned down from a government helicopter.
Two were killed last week, three yesterday, and the remaining five by the end of tomorrow. Because they all have radio collars and are easily located from the air their death is certain. The aerial gunning of the wolves is a consequence of one sheep and two calves being killed in the East Fork of the Salmon River upstream of WWP’s Greenfire Preserve.
To put this into an understandable and very American context, the cost to kill the wolves will be around $13,500; the value of the dead livestock is less than $300. (for which the ranchers will be reimbursed).
The only reason wolves are being killed in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming is because of the presence of domestic livestock often where they do not belong either environmentally or economically. WWP is researching legal means to bring pressure to change the current management of wolves in the Northern Rockies which has deteriorated into a well paid cottage industry with one objective: killing wolves.

Except for one mention of a range rider and a few instances of using fladry, pro-active animal husbandry is sorely lacking from this picture. When are the ranchers going to step up and protect their investment instead of running to the federally funded Wildlife Services for “predator control?”. Who say’s they have the taxpayer-funded right to have predators removed? What business doesn’t have risk? Why should the taxpayers fund their “tiny” risks from wolves? Please ask these questions of your Senators and Representatives. Tell them you don’t want your tax dollars funding WS, so they can kill wolves and other wildlife. Don’t let the anti-wolf crowd direct the conversation. Ask these common sense questions about this wasteful, expensive, deadly program of killing wolves for agribusiness.

It really is a good idea to make lists like this which we can look at. It helps us to understand how each one of the stories we hear or read about every week or so adds up to one sad, wasteful and disturbing list.
We need to draw on Wolf’s strength to help us through this period of critiquing that is just starting. Actually we should call it was it is, poorly defending a backward and cruel management plan. May the cold and snowy nights of December bring Wolf much nourishment and therefore strength to out-run, out-wit and out-last this mindless and insensitive hunt that just doesn’t seem to end!

Thanks for your support!! You are so right, we need to show people how many wolves are dying. Not just in the hunts but because of the livestock industry. TWENTY ONE ENTIRE PACKS were kiled in 2008 by Wildlife Services in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, for the livestock insdustry. This tit for tat management has to stop. Wolves kill very few livestock and predators in general kill few livestock. Most cattle die from reproduction, disease and weather.
Sad to say wolves can’t hide from Wildlife Service helicopters because so many of the packs are collared, they just follow wolves GPS signals. I’m against collaring wolves. It only causes their deaths.
I hope they will run fast and hide from the relentless guns. This has to stop!!

I know it’s shocking but actually that is just the tip of the iceburg for 08, I haven’t even listed Idaho or Wyoming for 08 yet. It’s slaughter going on out here, coupled with the hunts, this is a real war on wolves.

I just updated Idaho’s list of wolves killed for 2008. Almost finished and then I’ll have to move on to Wyoming for 2008. Then work my way back to 2000.
This is a grim business and so much senseless death. But I’m determined these wolves will be remembered.

Unfortunately, the news is even more tragic, as I type, because just two days ago another wolf pack was wiped out (11 wolves, including young ones), this time in Orsa Bear Park. This time the reason was that the leaders of the pack were 14-15 years old.
I must say I cannot understand anything of this nonsense. It seams like some kind of a brutal plan. Both parks are already talking about obtaining a new pack.

Katerina, I cannot believe they killed another pack of wolves for being old. What is going on in Sweden? They should celebrate the fact the wolves lived to such a great age. Wolves have such a short life span in the wild…just 3-4 years. If they live to eight it’s ancient. Neither parks should ever get another pack of wolves. It’s the same attitude they have here. “A wolf is a wolf is a wolf”

What world are we creating for our children then?
Why retain an activity that does not hold any practical value in this time? What was done in the settler’s times to the native predators was foolish back then, why should it be any less foolish now?

There is just no way to spin it. Trophy hunting is despicable. There is no reason to kill these animals other then the state made it a legal hunt. What would have been really wonderful is if nobody bought the tags. That would have been quite the statement. But of course I’m dreaming because there will always be people that like to kill animals. Why I can’t tell you. The thing is wolves are so close to dogs in appearance, dna, behavior…it’s sickening to think that doesn’t even matter to them.

They killed PUPS?! Why, did they want to stop reproduction? How can you kill the cute little things, and how can you kill the graceful, loping grown wolf? I do not understand. More DOGS kill people, and they don’t get killed for it, in fact I have heard no story of anyone ever being killed by a wolf in modern times!

Every year tens of millions of sharks die a slow death because of finning. Finning is the inhumane practice of hacking off the shark’s fins and throwing its still living body back into the sea. The sharks either starve to death, are eaten alive by other fish, or drown (if they are not in constant movement their gills cannot extract oxygen from the water). Shark fins are being “harvested” in ever greater numbers to feed the growing demand for shark fin soup, an Asian “delicacy”.
The atrocities are never ending when it comes to “mankind’s” need (and greed) to control other species.

Yes sharks are horribly persecuted too. Humans are terrible stewards of this earth. Something needs to change because species are going extinct in ever higher numbers. I have a question for you,Nabeki,do wolves really need to be controlled?Or does this only happens because hunters say “there aren’t enough elk because of wolves” and ranchers complain about wolves killing their livestock?I don’t really agree with these people,although wolves do kill livestock,coyotes killed 97000 cattle just in 2005,and wolves only killed 4400 that same year.
And ranchers can look at non-lethal ways to keep wolves away from their livestock,like reproducing wolf howls to “say” to other nearby wolves that that area is occupied.
The elk thing,I think,is just a complain of sport hunters saying that wolves are wiping out elk,wich is not true,and of them having a harder time looking for elk to kill-for sport…
Wolves are just doing what they do,maintain healthy populations of ungulates in the ecosystem,killing the illest,oldest or wounded in the herd,and leaving the ones that are much more capable of reproducing.Instead,sport hunters like to get the biggest,strongest bull elks with the biggest pair of antlers,so I don’t agree with them at all.
These brutal hunts be stopped,I already signed a Defenders of Wildlife petition to stop this,so I think I took action to save these beautiful creatures.
Btw,I love this blog,Nabeki,you did an excellent job in it,It is like a refuge to pro-wolf people,keep on the good work ^_^

I don’t believe wolves need to be controlled. They should take off the radio collars and stop tracking them like they are terrorists. Wolves are apex predators and have been coexisting with their prey for thousands of years.. They are doing what predators do. As you stated they kill very few livestock compared to feral dogs, coyotes even vultures and over ninety percent of cattle losses are due to weather, reproduction and disease.
Wolves are political footballs used to further people’s agendas. It really has very little to do with wolves themselves. It’s a way for certain people to vent their anger on an innocent animal that is only trying to survive.
So glad you enjoy the website, it was my intention to make this a refuge for wolf advocates so they can speak freely without being harrassed. Thanks for the kinds words.

I would tell to the people that opened these wolf hunts “Hey, if you hate wolves so much as to open a wolf hunt, then don’t be a coward. Go to a den, kill the pups and their family and see for yourself.”

Well I think the wolf is just like any other animal they need to eat just like any other animal eg Grizzly Bear or humans they are carnivores and eat farm animals as well so why punish the wolf for eating meat {farm animals} my god get the big bad wolf he ate my sheep. Well in that case you might want to get most of North America because they ate meat today too. Never mind killing them how about enjoying the planet with all the great creatures we have instead of all the death from the fear mongers.

Wolves do what they have to do to survive but they are so much more then that. They have a love for life, they are happy animals, are sociial creatures who love their families. To think people can shoot them with high powered rifles is so sick. I can’t imagine the screaming and howling they must do before they die at the hands of these wolf killers. As mentioned allready it is truely a relief for once reading something as positive as this blog and the reactions here, as opposed to all the insanity we are forced to witness everyday.
The ever ongoing destruction of nature and persecution of its creatures is something that caused me grief since childhood, and particularly wolves have a special place in my heart.
Being european, I was shocked last year when I heard about the swedish wolfhunt and went to find out more about it. I’m not sure if you posted anything of this(I coudlnt find at least) but here goes:
As usual their “arguments” were flawed and contradictive; some sources reporting the gene pool was bottlenecked and the “deficient” and sick wolves had to be removed, and possibly new wolves imported from Finland later. Other sources stated wolves had to be culled to make swedes more tolerant towards them.
Both of this was utter bullshit (naturally) since there was no direct scientific evidence the gene pool was weak and instead of researching it first they just decided to start killing them off right away based on these assumptions.. Also as many as 12.000 hunters signed up to kill -27 was it?- wolves! Tell me are those triggerhappy bloodthirsty retards gonna care about taking out the “deficient” wolves?! They are just gonna point their rifles at the first wolf they see, preferably the biggest and most beautiful, for that pelt will look best on their couch!!
For the second argument; if it is to make swedes more tolerant, then why import new wolves later?! Why cant their government teach its citizens some common sense instead! Wolves arent dangerous, the last attack on humans there was more than 200 years ago and they have become shy of humans! And even so, WE went to live in THEIR homes, even if they WOULD be dangerous, we dont have the right to exterminate them. This isn’t the Middle Ages anymore!! Go live in a goddamn city if you’re scared of the outdoors!!
One positive note at least; a lot of swedes spoke out against the hunt too
Wolves had to pay with their lives, again, to soothe intolerant retards who believe in the big bad wolf, to quench the bloodthirst of deranged murderers and to help politicians who think they can win votes over the wolves’ corpses.
The plan was to keep 210(!) wolves, but God knows how many more they slaughtered illegally. On top of that the past winter was extremely harsh and might have killed even a lot more…

I do remember the Swedish wolves, I did several posts on them.
Hunters kill 20 wolves in first Swedish hunt in 45 years
They even killed the wolves at Skane Wildlife Park because they broke out of their enclosure. That was horrific.

Could we provide along side these details the total deaths as a percentage of the estimated population in each area? The percentage in some cases I suspect would be very very troubling. I calculated that those 20 deaths would be around 12% of the Swedish wolf population. Frightening.

Thanks for the info on this site. I am very saddened to read of the deaths of wolves, not just the grey wolves but also the Mexican grey wolves. Personally, my soul animal is the tiger, which is killed sometimes for livestock depredation although mostly for TCM and the like. Yet, we share a love for apex predators that transcends boundaries and continents.
I cannot believe that they use radio-collaring to kill wolves. That is exactly what happened to the tigers in one reserve called Panna; officials collared the cats and then the poachers apparently tracked them and killed them. Sometimes, I think scientists as well as politicians should leave wolves, tigers, and other animals ALONE. Stop collaring, stop trying to track and monitor animals, just get incorruptible guards to keep off poachers and hunters! (Of course, guards can be corrupt too, but I think that the way things are these animals need that kind of help.)
It’s not just the grey and Mexican grey wolves at risk: red wolves are also at risk. Have you seen the recent killings of red wolves in the news? They are even MORE endangered than grey wolves!

Jon…there is a total lack of empathy and entitlement attached to the anti wolf crowd. They see these animals as a threat to them somehow. I guess they feel they have dominion over them. They want to feel like the top dog and they don’t feel that way because the wolves can run rings around them as hunters with no guns other then by tooth and claw. I think it’s an ego trip . The wolves have become the scapegoat of anti-government feeling.s Yet these same people will take money from the feds not to grow crops or raise cows, to suppress prices. So which is it, they like the government and take welfare from them or not?

I keep going bac to this post, to remember all those packs that were slaughtered, all those lives taken by the hands of ignorance and hatred…
I firmly believe that, even if you have a viable and genetically diverse population, one of the most important things to do before de-listing is educating the local people and help them build up a coexistence with the area’s predators. You cannot say a re-introduction was sucessfull until the public is, too, educated about that controversial species, in order to be able to better protect it for all future generations to watch.
Future generations will look back at what we have done with our Earth, and feel ashamed. Ashamed at how slowly many of us developed a love and understanding for Nature, and at how quickly we could destroy it and submit our minds to ignorance.
But my biggest hope is however, that those future generations have already build a co-existence with their wildlife and wildlands, and are able to look back at some of us this way.

In May, I was working in the Bitterroot Valley in Montana and overheard a teenage boy invite 2 other boys to go “wolf hunting” with his family on the weekend. One boy agreed, but the other said,” I’m afraid of getting caught. Some of them are micro-chipped.” The boy doing the inviting said that they go hunting every weekend and kill at least 2 wolves and dump the bodies along the road. He said “don’t worry, nobody cares”.
I was so appalled when I heard that, I decided then and there to take an active role in trying to save the wolves.

For all of you out there who are responsible for the deaths of these innocent wolves; I hope you all rot in hell. How can you kill any of them without any feelings? The pups don’t have any idea that you are there to kill them; they would probably lick your hand or give you a kiss if you were a human; but you’re not. Reading about this just makes me sick and so sad. If I were related to someone who did this; I would completely cut off any contact with them and make sure that others pushed him away also.

This is my first time at this site, but I am SO glad to see it exists. I think the big problem is, you are preaching to the choir, because anyone reading or commenting here, KNOWS the danger these wonderful animals are in. They are aware that unfortunately we share the planet with creatures that get a thrill from abusing, or otherwise hurting an animal that cannot fight back. Humans have EVERY advantage of technology and industry, and absolutely NO conscience, so are willing to stoop below ground level to commit their foul deeds. They don’t see it as murder or even as a kill; they see it as “fun” and battling that mind set is almost impossible. Fight, we MUST, but our laws prohibit the protectors from using the same tactics as these mindless killers use. Its too bad WE can’t use planes, and baited traps, and live bait, and poison, and night vision goggles, gps units, or make raids into family bedrooms. At least it would even things up a bit. I would NOT fear a wild wolf as much as I would a human predator. Please, keep up the good work, keep informing, keep fighting, and keep “loving” our wolves.

The list of murdered wolves had me crying so hard I couldnt type, I am beyond appalled, an disgusted! It it egregious , barbaric and unecessary! These poor wolves are political pawn! I have cared about the wolves for over fifty years. I recused a wolfdog and she became my best friend. In fact she became my service animal until her death last august 16th. She saved my life more then once.How do I feel about murdering wolves? I’ve been so mad I’ve gotten sick. I wish you could look into whats going to happen here in Wisconsin. Gov.walker made new law on wolf harest.It’s just wrong,and he’s a minister’s son.

Come back to the way we used to live. Once we used to live beside the wolves, hunting with them, but now we only kill them for the hell of it and i say damn u ppl who go around and kill wolves for fun. we watch over ur spirits and we can hear ur songs, but we cant save ur lives by ourselves. We once played music beside ur howls and we hunted for food with u and now we no longer can play our music with urs and we can no longer hunt for food beside u and we need to bring back those times and we need ur music once more to fill the night skies and for ur spirits to guid us through our dreams. Last time I checked, the whole purpose of the Endangered Species Act was so that endangered and threatened species, including wolves, can be protected and restored, not killed every time they cause a misconvenience and prematurely delisted to be hunted. But yet again, politicians are interfering with the ESA. Once I’m working in the field as a biologist, I will try to get politics out of the ESA and have it based off of sound science once again.

I just read the incomplete list of wolves with a promise for more info to come. I read with horror the packs wiped out, the young pups, the Alpha females still nursing her pups, still more little pups, so many wolves murdered! It’s unbelievable! Man is lower than any animal! Thank you for this site. I don’t know how you could stand to do it but I know, it is time to tell about the wolves and how they have been murdered. Thank you Joan, it’s very tough doing this day after day but I feel I have to keep going for the wolves. I haven’t updated the Memorial Page because the fish and game agencies barely release any information on individual packs. A wolf’s life seems to mean very little to them and since the hunts have become ever more brutal they barely document pertinent information. I’m not sure I’ll ever continue to update that page, it’s soul killing.
