Fantasies of killing become increasingly bizarre

Lynne Stone, longtime wolf advocate and executive director of Northern Idaho’s Boulder White Cloud Council in Ketchum, couldn’t help but laugh. For the last two years she has routinely petitioned the Idaho Dept of Fish and Game for every single “ Big Game Mortality Report” filed on wolves killed by hunters —several hundred of them since the animals lost Endangered Species Act protect. Hunters and trappers are required to send in the report along with the skull and pelt for examination. In mid-January Stone ran across a November 2012 report that stated, “DNA came back as a domestic dog,” a light-skinned one.

“Buy a wolf tag, shoot a dog, claim it was a wolf, get bragging rights and a dog-skin rug,” she chuckled “Life is wonderful in 3rd world Idaho. Is anyone missing a light-colored mutt? Maybe it’s time folks put orange vests and hats on their dogs.”

Gallows humor is all wolf supporters have left. In February 2011, Congress removed gray wolves in the northern Rockies from protection by the Endangered Species Act, the first time a species has ever been delisted for political reasons. Before that, the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s reintroduction of wolves to the northern Rockies in the mid-1990s appeared to be one of the greatest conservation successes in decades. Wolves had been killed off in the West in the late nineteenth and early centuries. But while tourists from all over the country came to Yellowstone in hopes of seeing “Cinderella” or “Limpy” — many of the wolves became named — in the Rockies a reactionary political movement developed against the animals.

  1. This is awful & needs to be stopped! Humans have screwed up the Natural Balance of Nature!!!

  2. bastard hunters. That is all they will understand.

  3. I don’t get something this goes on every year to me not much progress to end it. How many more wolves are there can’t be many. So why don’t these slaughtering trapping idiots go out and kill all of them and get it done instead of putting everyone through this trauma for the ones that do care. Then they have one big trophy and they can shove it. Everyone looks for donations to go to court which is not working all it does is buy time. The government does not care. If I had the money would an end to it all

    • I agree with your feelings but killing off all the wolves would just give another name to ever growing extinction list. Plus nature would go through hell trying to fix the damage done by eliminating one of its predators.

      • I know saying it out of mere frustration. Go through this every year I am sick of it and a government that doesn’t give a crap other then how good they look in front of the camera

  4. I sent info. to Sam Champion, GMA to do a piece on the slaughter of the wolves. WE NEED MEDIA ATTENTION OR IT WILL CONTINUE.

Life is a parade of on-going accolades that should be acknowledged throughout one’s journey.

  5. Reblogged this on Wisconsin Wildlife Ethic-Vote Our Wildlife and commented:
Although Bill Gobson’s article is about the war on wolves in the Rockies, the mindset being described could easily be Northern Wisconsin.

    • Yes, you are so right rali74.

  6. The continued slaughter of wolves in the western states must be stopped. It is completely out of hand and will not stop unless hunters are put on notice they will be prosecuted for animal cruelty. It needs to be done 2 months ago.

    • I agree. We have been doing all we can but it isn’t making a great enough effect on the hunters or the government. Something definitely has to be done.

  7. Pledge to Protect America’s Wolves! Save the Wolves! Praying for Congressman Raul Grijalva to became for secretary interior !

  8. When will we hear who the next DOI appointee is? It obviously isn’t a top priority. I fear the only critieria will be to appoint a woman. But I have signed the petition for Raul Grijalva.

  9. I remember not too long ago DNR was re introducing wolves back into the areas…. now we are hunting and killing them~ Oh ya thats how the government works. WASTE, KILL, Want… Throw Away!
Everything has a reason and a season, and a purpose, teh one thing we humans are good at is messing it all up!
Save the Wolves and save another part of the Circle of Life.

  10. Take a look at this wolf hunting page on facebook. In the group statement they express their hatred for wolves and their plans to make them extinct. This page also tells wolf lovers to commit suicide. Yet these are the people our government puts on a pedestal over us.

Support Wolf Butchering, Cooking and Recipes
I have been kind of busy lately & I have not been able to see how beautifully this page has been developing. It is about time the wolf numbers have been dropping. They are nothing but a parasite on the world & should be weeded out as such. I’f you’d hate to live in a world without wolves, I suggest taking yourself out.

    • Here’s one of the comments:

“I hope you find karma to be profound in your life; may you limp along with a trap on each foot; a snare around your throat and your bowels trailing behind you… or better yet, may a large pack of wolves hunt you down and have sport with your body yipping with glee as you suffer until your lousy soul is released to hell.”

      • Young lady, whoever you are, I thank you kindly for that comment.

      • (:

  11. People are sick

  12. I gave my Grandson a book this Evening, a book about wolves. At the start of the wolf hunting season we held hands and said a prayer for the wolves that they would be smart and swift against the men who what to kill them only for there pets. Tonight I told him the fight might only bw won by educating his generation. He hugged the book written by Jim brandenburg. Most of my hopes now with a six year old and a prayer.

    • That’s sweet

  13. People need to wake up before we have no more wolves in our most fragile world. I am truly sickened by this.

  14. How dare these scum bags try to take wolves away from all of us,forever.

  15. How can we stop this ,, now?

  17. ” When I look in to the eyes of an animal I do not see an animal. I see a living being. I see a friend. I feel a Soul.” by A D Williams This is how I feel about the Wolves and all Wildlife beings, they have souls they are the same as we.

  18. I asked my 4 yr. old grandaughrer “please don’t grow up to fast” Her answer to me “I have to grow up grandma, to save the wolves from the
    mean mean men”
WHERE I ask, does the need to kill innocent animals come from?
Dare I ask WHY they need to kill?
    my heart hurts.

    • Christy..that is heartwarming and oh so noble of your little granddaughter. The children are the future and what they think and believe about wolves will be the wolves’ fate. Thank you for sharing!

  22. hunter bastards

    • Mark…Please no death threats…it doesn’t help the wolves. I had to edit your comment. I know you’re frustrated, we all are but that is one of the rules of this blog.

What will help the wolves is if people start organizing against this slaughter. We must work to see wolves relisted!! That is their only hope.

For the wolves, For the wild ones,

      • I’s not a death threat. It’s just here’s hoping they die soon. And I will not stop.

      • Mark…I know you didn’t mean it that way. I want the culture of hate to die out, I want people to stop teaching their children to kill and hurt animals…I understand where you’re coming from.

For the wolves, For the wild ones,

  23. There is another way and that is to eliminate the privilege of being able to hunt. The time for hunting of any sort is over. There is no longer the need. Subsistence is one thing but for trophies no more.

    • I wish that we could do something like that.??

      • We need to all come together to push for relisting. It won’t happen if all we do is lament but yet do nothing. Mark has the right idea.

For the wolves, For the wild ones,

    • Mark…Trophy hunting is legalized sadism.

For the wolves, For the wild ones,

  24. I’m guilty of losing my cool also. I am so frustrated, I can’t begin to even explain to you all how angry & frustrated I am.

    • Folks, I send daily e-mail letters to the White House. I speak from my heart and anything else. Let’s all try to do something similar. I also send letters to the dept. of the Interior. Now that the jackwagon Salazar is gone we can lobby for our own choice. Rep. Raul Grijalva. The these places with a multitude of writing. The pen might be mightier than the sword.

    • I know Sandy, we’re all feeling it. And the gloating and rubbing it in our faces is the worst. But these hateful people were always out there, it’s the politicians who are to blame, they gave them carte blanche to kill America’s wolves.

For the wolves, For the wild ones,

  25. this is awful what there doing to the wolfs if they keep going the way there going where not going to have any wolfs left i hate the people who are killing the wolfs with the tags on.
